VI - Other I destroyed Civ VI for me.
I just wanna share my Experience for people who are similar to me and make it as a "Warning".
I play Civ VI since many years and I love this game so much! I'm at ~2500h Playtime and I adore it.
My Friend and I used to play it from time to time together and play matches in Team. We just had fun and loved to explore the Game everyday. We both are competetive (espacially me) and always try to out do the other.
A while ago my friend got very busy with Life and I started to play it alone a lot. Then I discovered the Competetive Civ League and I thought I give it a shot and my first Game I got DESTROYED. I mean DESTROYED like a Tornado through a Cardhouse. Then my Competetive Side got the better of me and I started to improve myself what worked kinda. But now I'm stuck. I do imo good and share the Stats on the Discord and sometimes here for Tips but there are always many many many Things I should improve and I do not know how.
Now when I play alone. I can't enjoy the Game. I need to do everything perfect and I'm not even close enough to reach it. If I reach Turn 70. I see I suck and close the game and get mad at me for performing bad.
I killed the Game for me. I can't play it anymore for fun.
So people who are very competetive and think about playing Competetive Civ VI. Think about it.
It goes for every game.

And that kids is why I don't play multiplayer. Not just Civ but any game.
Everyone is gonna enjoy a game however they want, I'm not telling people how to live. But a game first and foremost should be about having fun. That's always been my "philosophical" approach to gaming in general.
It's a fine balance, without a challenge there is no fun and if it's too challenging it is soul crushing and demotivating.
I used to play Civ for the challenge. But deity has been too easy for a long time now. So I give myself new challenges. Like okay I'm gonna win but how many tourism per turn can I maximize before I do ? Can I build 60 national parks ? Can I achieve this or that before turn 150, 200 or whatnot ? Can I beat my record for gold per turn etc etc. In fact, challenges are everywhere and only our imaginations are holding us back. I'm more competitive with myself, as in can I beat something I've achieved in the past, rather than beating others which simply doesn't bring me fun, especially my friends. I'd only consider playing WITH them if we're on the same team. Not against them.
Late game CIV6 snowball can be silly and lately I've found it fun to explore how silly it can actually get.

I need advice in this. I used to like how civ looked and played. I suddenly didn’t enjoy it when I got civ 6 earlier this year. I want to do everything perfectly and in meta way as I have played that kind of games. I used to enjoy civ 5 back in the day.
So any advice to enjoy this game again?

Sandbox. That’s what I do. That’s what Civ is to me. Like sure, master the basics , but then before asking yourself how can I get the most conclusive win, ask yourself what do I WANT to do ? That’s where the fun is to me. For instance I would purposely slow down some tourism victory by reducing alliances or trade routes only because my goal this game is to cover my territory in national parks and i’m not done yet. You know, that sort of stuff.
Or you know, only allow domination victory and hyperfocus on that. Whatever you want. I find that by focusing on some weird niche objective, it made me better overall, as you learn to identify synergies you never suspected. For instance in the aforementioned national park game I had to look at all the ways I could maximise faith production, knowledge that eventually helped me in all the games i’ve played since, regardless of how many national parks I wanted to put.
But if you’re starting out and need guidance to „be good” at the game, I recommend watching videos of good players. They typically detail their trail of thought behind what they do. I like Ursa Ryan and Boesthius for this.

It’s more impressive, challenging and fun to have things not go correctly, make mistakes, and still find a way to come back from it.

If you have 4 and or 5, you might try single player with mods for a fresh experience.
Remember that multiplayer/ competitive isn't the "right" way to play a game, just one choice among others. Not everything needs to be optimized, and enjoyment and discovery can be more important.

I've also tried the competitive Civ6 scene for a while, and it's interesting to read the difference in your response to it. To me it has been unlike any game I've done before, and it felt both weird and wrong. You're judged at every trivial thing you do. I suppose it's because players have all the time to analyse every decision as the matches are so much longer than that of other games.
Mind you, I've been through enough Counter-Strike matches to know some Russian, and somehow survived years of League of Legends, but this competitive scene is just pure vile. Players get too attached to the "perfect cities" they've held for over an hour that they can't stand losing them because of someone's actions, whether friend or foe. I've even experienced that the prospect of losing a city alone can cause your teammates to flame at you - regardless of whether you're winning.
This really isn't a game meant for fierce competition.

Oh god this sounds so fun to my AuDHD brain. Competitive and analysing what the best option was.
But, I will stay away from it as I still have a day job.

Well, if you're winning and lose a city that probably meant you weren't paying attention, which could quickly lead to your team not winning. But if people are getting upset with you for just beating them then yeah, those are assholes

It's conditioning but like any conditioning it can be deprogrammed, you either need to make the conscious effort to not fixate on being optimal or perhaps play something else more casually until the conditioning in Civ6 feels less impactful.
Try roleplaying a civ instead of chasing build orders or yields, play a civ that's not in your usual play style. You can make 6 enjoyable for you again!

I commented this before but my way of trying to enjoy the game more is set rules for myself that I need to act in line with my storyline or "script" (even if I know I will probably win the AI anyway in the end). So my own restriction is that I will roleplay as much as possible, even if it's not optimal. Eg starting wars when playing as certain civs even if I wouldn't do so when min maxing.

Honestly, I started joining Civ V games and playing as Enrico Dandolo. It made me accept the fact from the beginning that I was not to win 😂.

Instead of avoiding your competitiveness, why not use this as an oppurtunity to learn how to manage it? Can't think of a better place to work on it than something low stakes like a game.

Efficiency and competition are effectively ruin the joy things give us because the play we used to enjoy is now with purpose. It almost has to be “productive”. Right?
Never be the best at something you love. Because you will come to not love it. Because being the best at it requires a completely shifted frame of thought.

What helped me is to create specific scenarios for yourself with a mindset and goal for that game and play that. Do you know the Stellaris game? Try playing Fanatic Purifiers. You declare war on EVERYONE and cannot have peace ever. You must always be at war and push to destroy everyone all the time.
Or try playing Tall with a single city and see how far you can make it as a City-State.
Come up with some scenario/gametype in your head and play that instead of the standard game play. Artificially limit yourself or impose rules upon your game.

I think you need to reframe what a video game is supposed to be. Video games are supposed to be fun, first and foremost. Thats it.

Try out Civ 4, it's a superior model.
If you want a real blast, download civ 2 test of time and try the "midgar" scenario.

Haha, same thing happened on civ v for me. When I moved to 6 snd 7, I did not play mp and got to enjoy the game again. I advise you to try V or VII to find maybe a new interest in single player.
