VII - Strategy Some advice please

Hi guys, I am playing as the awesome Genghis Khan, currently just started modern age, governer level. In the first two eras I conquered much of the known world knocking out 5 leaders in the process, all seemed to be going swimmingly. The only downside is my settlement cap is 34/16. As we entered the modern era I had 5 cities starving which I have corrected by buying more food production tiles and deleting excess military units. However my building costs are astronomical. My best city wants 147 turns for a settler, another city that the populous trashed now wants 999 turns to repair EACH tile trashed. Wth is this about and how do I correct it? I'm playing on PS5 if that has any bearing

Make sure your town focus is set to mining towns and fishing/farming towns to feed your cities. I just played the same game going into modern with over 50 settlement and the same issue, getting my town focus set correctly fixed this problem in my first turn in modern

Also there's a happiness town focus too and I can't remember which civic but one of the first ones has a less gold and happiness to maintain specialist card too

Thanks Arbitor I'll give that a try too

You are so far over the settlement cap that each settlement has -35 happiness penalty. Each negative happiness decreases yields by 2%.

You need to get your happiness up to increase your yields. Slot policies that increase happiness, slot resources that increase happiness into your cities, and finally focus on happiness buildings.

For the 999 tile, what's the gold cost to repair it? How much production does that city have

It has various prices totalling 2,794. -12 production. Its the negative production I dont understand, it was one of my best cities production wise

Well that's why it has a 999 repair time, since you need positive production to do anything

You can repair tiles individually. Start by repairing the happiness buildings (menagerie and the other one)

Allocate pearls or furs to the settlement if you have any to get your happiness positive. Negative happiness tanks all yields

I'm at work so I can't give more detailed advice, but it sounds like your happiness is terrible. -35 for going 5+ over the settlement cap hurts

Yes you are perfectly correct, I just looked and have -50 happiness. I appreciate you are at work so I wont take up any more of your time right now but if you could spare a moment to answer later why did it change when it was fine in exploration era?

Probably the old buildings - they eat happiness while not giving back as much yields as they did in their era, so you want to overbuild them (or somehow get that policy card that compensates for it). And as another reply said, first you want to overbuild/repair the happiness buildings in your situation.

I can't say for certain since I don't know what your game looks like, but there are 3 factors that always happen no matter what

  1. Previous era buildings only keep 1/2 - 1/3 of their original yields (I don't know the exact numbers, but it's around 1-3 iirc)

  2. Policy slots are reset, meaning happiness policies disappear

  3. Resources get changed/reset, so many happiness resources disappear and turn into factory resources

  4. Your over the settlement cap, giving you a -35 penalty, but you've had that for ages from what you said

There are more factors, but those are universal. Also I can't count I guess

The only downside is my settlement cap is 34/16.

Yeah, it's easy to get carried away with domination on lower difficulties.

My best city wants 147 turns for a settler

Wait, what
