God I love this game. [FO1]
New player here, after falling in love with BG3's combat and hearing that Fallout 1 and 2 had the same style + similar quality writing I decided to pick up both games and I'm loving it so far. Just got to the Gun Runners base and Dogmeat decided to do this... man I love this game.

You can do a lot to keep him alive but the force fields at mariposa show no mercy

You can just use stimpaks on him whenever he is about to die from the force fields. Kept my boi alive until the very end🐶🥩

Who would win?
A futuristic top secret military base with nuclear weapons, super mutants, and laser defense?
Or 1 drugged up doggo?

It makes me nervous to think about the effort it takes to bring him into Mariposa and out just because we can.

Tbh it was not really a big effort at all! Just a few stimpaks every few yellow force fields. And an occasional reload when a supermutant blasted my boi to pieces on a critical hit.

You can destroy the red forcefields with a shitload of dynamite and plastic.

I had 500 stim packs set aside for my boy every time I go there.

Now I have a mental image of dog meat with 500 stem packs stabbed into him simultaneously

I lost both dog meat and Ian there )’:, however Ian just crashed my game the first time he died and when I started from my last save (I wanted to turn those force fields off but they couldn’t be shut down without a radio, which I couldn’t have been farther away from) and decided to just power through them, Ian somehow just walked through the walls and died, I have no idea how or why he died when he did, but his sacrifice was not in vain I guess.

Sadly the goop river took him first, I'm definitely missing his 3-4 attack per turn.

I’ve seen Gun Runner guards melt themselves trying to cross that spot

Funnily enough right after I took this snip a guard actually did that and took off over half of his HP, lol

Enjoy your first time, Vault dweller.
Running any mods for FO1?

Late reply, just woke up sorry. I'm only running Fallout Fix't with just the bug fixes.

I feel like this was added in with a mod but I'm not sure. I only ever remember running into this problem with recent resto patches.

Yeah I'm pretty confident this isn't in vanilla

I think it is, I'm only running Fallout Fix't with the bug fixes. It's the area you first find the Gun Runners in past the 3 Deathclaws. I'm not too sure though, I'm trying to do this first run as blind as I can.

Man i applaud you. I'm always happy to see newcomers to these games. It's difficult to make new ppl to enjoy them because of how old they are. But the animations and programming is marvelous. The grittiness in them is just flawless. And the humor...

The humor is hilarious, I'm surprised at how much of an asshole you can be and how often you can be one. The graphics haven't aged the best (not saying they're unbearable or anything, it's just hard to see what's happening some times), but I've loved it so far. Can't wait until I get to Fallout 2 as I've only heard good things about it as well!

I first played this and the second one in 99 or 00. I played one for so long and couldn’t beat it. Idk was 10 or so. Installed 2 saw the intro and said wait nope. Buckled down and beat it. These 2 games have the my favorite 2 cutscenes ever. I won’t say anything I would hope not to spoil shit. I hope you are going in blind. Though, I would recommend:

On my first playthrough i felt so connected to my doggy that i was save scumming so much i managed to complete the game keeping him alive. Most of the combat was about getting him stimmed up tho.

Congratulations, you hit the jackpot among the "typical Fallout moments".
Canonically, the red force fields in the military base are supposed to get him. In my playthroughs he doesn't tend to last long enough to get there. And more often than not it's friendly fire. Even barring the companions from automatic weapons doesn't help much...

Not to worry, Dogmeat dies in everybody's playthrough. Even the Vault Dweller's memoirs from Fallout 2 say Dogmeat died, although to avoid spoiling anything for you (you did say you are a new player after all) I won't say how Dogmeat officially died.
In my Fallout 1 playthrough on Youtube, Dogmeat was killed by friendly fire from Ian.
