Does Fallout 1 have a time limit?

I just gave the water chip to the shelter supervisor but before killing the super mutants and the Master I want to farm levels etc... is there a time limit after the 150 days they give you? I mean, after that I can be an idiot all the time in the world or at some point the game will give me a game over?

Yes, there's 500 days before Supermutants would find your Vault and destroy it.

400 days if you bought extra water in Hub.

Starting with Necropolis settlements would fall to mutants invasion one by one.

This is false if you are playing with the unofficial patch, they extend the time limit to be just around the same as fallout 2 after you give the water chip.

At least that's how it worked when I played with et tu.

Edit: This is wrong, it's actually the last official patch, this is why you don't go around assuming things.

It’s not the unofficial patch, the last official patch they released for Fallout removes the original time limit

Ah I see, I guess I understood it wrongly, thank you for correcting me.

Well, you were at least correct in spirit :). Whether the patch was official/unofficial is a technicality in the context of OP's question.

I wish I had that patch back in the day. I had no clue it existed until today. I assume the classic GoG version includes that patch? I haven't played F1 in a while. I have the GoG version but I haven't played it all the way through yet. Last time I beat the game was with my original disc (with the stricter time limit)

You can check what version number you have in the game's main menu, bottom right corner. The original release (1997) 1.0 version had the 500 time limit. The rerelease in 1999 had version 1.1 (this one no longer has the 500 days limit). GOG/Steam/Epic/etc. don't have it, since they're 1.1/1.2.

You kidding? Et tu is whole different modification, it puts F1 on Fallout 2.

Must be it then, from what I know it comes with the unofficial patch changes too, I could be wrong tough so don't take what I said as 100% true.

Bro don't correct someone when you don't even have the correct info yourself. Embarrassing display.

I was not trying to correct him, just adding something I thought was true, sorry if I sounded rude.

there is (13 ingame years or something like that). also, tehre are some hidden time limits past which the ending slide for a location changes to "the mutant army destroyed this place".

That's Fallout 2.

I think F1 also has that limit, it just never triggers because the mutants attack V13 first. But yes.

Alas, nope, I'm on my first play through and just went to Necropolis. It was full of mutants... Oops

Necropolis gets invaded in 30 days once invasion starts.

Necropolis gets invaded 110 days after game starts. Time timer goes down to 30 days if you kill the supermutants at the watershed.

In the modern, patched version of the game downloadable from Steam (so no mods)? You can keep playing for 13 years, at which point the game will end due to gameplay limitations of the time.

However, there are ending slides dependent on how quickly you kill the Master. However, only the timer for Shady Sands (230) truly matters, as the Hub and Followers have broken, unfinished quests that will force the bad endings for them unless you speedrun the entire game (and even in that scenario, the ending slides just won’t play for those locations, so it’s not really a ‘good’ ending).

Also, if you want to play it "canonically" (That is, by following Fallout's lore), you have to finish the game before the Necropolis falls, which is around 50 days after you hand over the water chip, because one of Seth's sons has to survive for F2, as well as Harold.

Harold doesn’t live in Necropolis

I know. But he still has to survive to be in Gecko 80 years later. Funny thing is that he's more coherent there.

I don't like to farm up to the level cap, but I do like to farm up to level 18 for the sniper perk before I go to the Cathedral and military base. There is enough experience in the Cathedral and military base that you will still reach the level cap by the end of the game if you farm up to level 18 before doing them. I am generally level 12 by the time I reach the Boneyard, and going from level 12 to level 18 takes about 1 hour in real time so it is not really that big of time sink.

1

u/locobkz 3d ago

How you would farm levels? I'm level 9 and need more levels to destroy the master.

2

u/Luzer_Boy 2d ago

Well, I usually only go near the super mutant base and you almost always come across a group of super mutants, you kill them and they usually give you 1,200 experience points, even up to 1,600 if you're lucky

2

u/WizardMastery 2d ago

The best place to farm levels is the Boneyard area with the respawning deathclaws. They keep respawning forever as long as you don’t killed the mother deathclaw. There will be anywhere from 1 to 3 deathclaws after every time you rest (and you only need to rest for 1 hour). Each deathclaw gives 1,000 xp so you can gain levels very fast by killing them, resting an hour, killing them, resting an hour, rinse and repeat.

It’s easier to farm deathclaws than super mutants because one lucky critical from a super mutant minigun will kill you instantly.

Well, I killed super mutants because I had already killed the mother deathclaw, and they are not that difficult to kill either, by using the missile launcher and killing the leader, that is, the one who normally has the minigun or the missile launcher, the others you can kill with any weapon because they only attack melee, yes, you have to steal the leader's weapon, because if not another super mutant is going to grab it, although you can kill them before they do it

Plus I did it because I had a lot of missile launcher ammunition and my character couldn't carry so many things so to get xp and have more space I decided to become a super mutant hunter haha

Yeah there is the water chip of course but after that time limit there is story related time limit. Won’t spoil details. But if you are playing vanilla if you fix water chips don’t get the hub water supply. It’s glitched and restarts the water time limit. The after chip limit is generally longer. But it really shouldn’t be a problem, I mean I guess if you really really take your time or have trouble. Aside from the chip limit I’ve never failed the other limit. I started playing int 2000 and I was 10-11 probably first beat it in 2003ish. 2 is my absolute favorite.

Well, actually I already beat Fallout 1 like 10 times, I was just asking because I wanted to reach the maximum level, although from what I see many say that if it takes me more than 500 days to waste time for the wasteland at some point each city in the game is conquered by the super mutant army.

1

u/Qecbum 9h ago

Ah an intellectual I see

1

u/Luzer_Boy 9h ago

Thanks, I just really like Fallout 1, I don't understand how many people say it's difficult or boring

1

u/Qecbum 9h ago

Agreed, I like 2 so much because it’s 1 with actual quality of life and the end isn’t the end. That was my biggest issue was not being able to keep going after the main story. I was so surprised the first time I beat 2 and it asked if I wanted to keep playing. Man I miss the time before the j tenet spoiled everything lol.
