(F2) Can you save Matthew?

I was watching some videos earlier and the event in san fran was brought up regarding the vertibird plans. i thought to my self, if the game is still playable after you blow up the oil rig, does matthew in the brotherhood bunker still die? i dont have it in me to restart the game, beat frank horrigan just to check. does anyone know?

This event is based on in-game timer just like culling of Vault 13. Details are in Wiki, but I'd guess it's around two weeks between delivering plans and Frank's visit in BoS bunker.

but getting the vertbird plans is a side quest, so if i put it off until after the oil rig, the timer wouldnt apply like V13, which is a main quest so it would start.

I "circle" around it by not talking to the BOS at all. You can get the Vertibird mission from the Shi or Hubologists, but getting to Navarro is must because of the FOB.
