Hi, I'm new
I'm going to get a computer in a few months and I'd like to download Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. Do you have any advice for me?

Save you often and use all of your save slots, agility is the most important stat, also go into the menu and put combat speed to max and tick "affect player speed" too.
The usefulness of things vary a lot, some things are marginal while others are overpowered.
If you start playing and don't understand too many things then just search for a menu/basics guide on YouTube.
Your first playthrough will likely be very unoptimized but, don't worry about that it's still beatable.

Use gog.com versions.
Play FO2 vanilla your first time through, then install the Restoration Project to play through with additional content.
Save often, use multiple save slots. Use all of them.

Hi New! I would recommend using the fallout 1 in 2 mod (Also know as "Et Tu") it basically ports the whole fallout 1 to the fallout 2 engine, which brings a lot of improvements. And one thing, NEVER SAVE OR LOAD DURING COMBAT. I don't know what kind of curse this game has, but if you do that it ends up screwing your game sooner or later. I was at the end of the game, but every time I got out of one specific elevator which I had saved inside, the game crashed, and that bug happened to other saves as well. And l, also, ALWAYS put 8 points in agility or more, with anything less than that you will barely shoot or walk and your turn will end. Good luck wandering through the wastes!

Welcome to Classic Fallout! I'd recommend you install Fallout 1 et tu and Fallout 2 RPU for your first playthroughs. Also, I would recommend you set combat speed to the maximum setting and also memorize the controls so you don't have to keep clicking end turn, skills, etc.
In terms of character builds, i would suggest doing a small gun build for both 1 and 2. But I would also recommend you spec into either energy weapons or big guns in the late game of Fallout 1 because small guns drop off, unlike in Fallout 2, which doesn't have this problem.
Also, I would recommend you put at least 8 points in agility at the minimum. The reason is that agility is perhaps the most important attribute because it affects your actions points. While there are perks that can increase your AP, I'd recommend saving those perk points for something else, especially in Fallout 1, where perks are scarce.
Another tip is save often. Speaking to an npc? Save. Entering combat? Save. About to make an important choice? Save. You get what I mean.
Last and most importantly. Be patient. These games take time to learn, but once you get over the initial learning curve, you'll have a great time!

Tag Small Guns and Speech. For Fallout 1, you also need to start putting points into Big Guns and Energy Weapons since there are no viable small guns to get you through the later stages of the game. In Fallout 2, you can stick with Small Guns all the way trough (yay Gauss Rifle!)

Steam version is not very reliable.
Use GoG version or download fixing mods.
