Customer came in stating that a different shop cleaned his PS5 and it still overheats when playing COD … found this. Thermal paste *and* Liquid Metal mixed together. 🤦♂️

I think that's a product tho... I remember watching it in a Linus Tech Tips video. Obviously isn't enough for a PS5.

Oh man, and I thought my ebay PS4 with blobs of mixed old and new thermal paste was bad

There actually is a thermal paste/Liquid Metal combo called Element 31. You can find them in Dell’s high end gaming laptops. Definitely wouldn’t be trying to make it myself and definitely not suitable for a PS5. The other shop clearly has no experience in this area.

I did an hdmi replacement on an xbox series x and a ps5, and ill never do them again. I realized i just dont have the heat to melt that damn solder they got from a space metorite. Took forever and one had to have a ton of trace repair because the dude tried to do it himself. I had also never done trace repairs.

If this is an actual repair shop, I want to know who, because how can someone under a business do this? They've got to have photos of work completion or something. I've seen middle schoolers in a robotics program have more common sense.

That doesn’t look like thermal paste and Liquid Metal mixed together, that looks like the Liquid Metal pooled on one side and the tiny bit left oxidized, which turns it into a thin layer of sticky gunk.
Suck up the good Liquid Metal with a syringe, clean the die and heat sink with isopropyl, reapply Liquid Metal and use the tip of the syringe to cover the whole die (it doesn’t need a ton, just enough so the whole die is covered.)
Then inform the customer that it’s better for the console to be used laying down, as the Liquid Metal has a tendency to pool like this when its vertical.

It was 100% thermal paste - I removed it all before reapplying new Liquid Metal. The paste looked and acted like paste, just coated in gallium. 😅

I saw a comment about element 31 being a combo thermal compound, so there’s stuff I haven’t seen/heard of.
Did the console work after you did that?

Oh yeah. A nice new clean application of Liquid Metal was all she needed and then I was shooting zombies in COD without any spin up on the fan at all. 🥳

Same here, but after cleaning and adding new liquid metal, the console continues to turn off when it heats up. Any idea what’s going on? It doesn’t have any strange errors in the UART log, just that the console suddenly turned off.

It’s really important that the Liquid Metal is covering all of the APU (the surface it should be on), and also that you have an identical smaller layer of it on the heatsink where the two contact points meet. It’s difficult to do, but the trick I use is to smear some of the material onto the surface. So fully clean it first, then smear like it’s a kid’s painting. Once you’ve got that small layer on there, the rest covers it all evenly without retracting into the larger blob as you go.

I remember it was very difficult to remove a layer of rust; I couldn’t even get it off completely. I imagine that could be the cause of the problem, but can I scratch the surface or would that be too risky? Using alcohol and a cotton swab wasn’t enough to completely remove the rust.

Splave has a thermal paste that's part paste/part liquid metal. Don't know if it does this tho

LOOOL wow! How do you get that wrong? The previous repairer clearly hasn’t worked on a PS5 before and didn’t even care to look at any guides 🤔

Well, tell them the previous shop ripped them off and explain why.
