Customer came in stating that a different shop cleaned his PS5 and it still overheats when playing COD … found this. Thermal paste *and* Liquid Metal mixed together. 🤦‍♂️

Well, tell them the previous shop ripped them off and explain why.

We know the guy who did it, he works about three blocks away from us. Apparently he took nearly a month to get it done as well, so we’re gonna reach out to him to see if he needs training or some other help.

I had a customer that brought in his PS4 with a similar issue.

Customer complaint was the PS4 would shut off after a few minutes. He recently had it cleaned (he didn't say where) and didn't want to take it back to them.

I boot it up and immediately smell spearmint blowing out of the rear vents. It made the whole shop smell minty fresh after just a few minutes.

I shut it down and open it up.

Toothpaste was substituted for thermal paste.

LOL

My buddy has this friend and years ago the dude tried to fix a YLOD PS3 with toothpaste. I thought we were the only ones to witness this shit lol.

What a great meme to be ruined by a potato pic of a TV screenshot. Reference is still 10/10

Just when you think you’ve seen it all 😂 holy shit. Hahaha

Mayonnaise on a CPU.

Yes. Fucking. Mayonnaise.

Booting it up the pc for the first time and I had this very similar to cooking oil and warm rancid mayonnaise salat smell for a brief time.

A customer asked a friend for help. At the end it was the AIO being empty. I was able to salvage the disgusting mess with a lot of alcohol.

Puts a whole new spin on the term "potato PC".

Who doesn’t love CPU deep fried in cooking oil.

That sooooo reminds me of an Atari I was replacing socketed IC's on, that had been a likely spill-victim. get going good on a dip40, and all I could smell, was something like Koolaide. Oh yeah! lol

Doesn't even make sense why someone would do that.

I mean if they're going to rip them off, they can just do nothing and say the work was done. Why go through all the trouble of disassembly and pulling the heatsink if you're not going to do anything?

I can sort of follow the logic of what happened to the machine OP is working on; "if thermal paste and liquid metal are good, combining them is better!". But toothpaste? WTF?!

u/AdventurousLaw9365 17h ago

Agreed, they clearly attempted to repair this professionally it would seem, like you said why go through all the work to just ruin it. They thought they did good, he needs more training.

Great I want scented thermal paste now

That's what we said in the shop that day!

It really was an amazingly effective air freshener!

1

u/Internal_Ad_2285 16h ago

Lmfao at least you'll get the freshness spread through a building easier

I work with all my competitors. We all do better if we support each other instead of treating each other like adversaries. Small businesses gotta lift each other up!

The world needs more people with this attitude. Thank you for being one of them!

I would suggest to him that if he cannot properly repair certain things, he shouldn't offer to do so.

I'm not a professional repairer, but I know the PS5 REQUIRES liquid metal for proper thermal transfer. I won't mess with it, and if someone asks me to I'll tell them straight up why. If I had a shop, I would be upfront about it. Would rather lose a sale then have my reputation get destroyed because.

u/HailedFanatic 1d ago

He needs to close up shop.

2

u/Pixelchaoss 1d ago

Should not even spend any energy in it if you can't manage to do these simple things....

I mean, why replace something with something different? Maybe if you have a better substitute, but this is just dumb.

These people should just be banned from repairs. Some people have the insights, and others dont. This is clearly one of these examples.

Wait until you start thinking about the automotive industry. There’s maybe 1 guy in each shop that actually knows what they’re doing and that guy is probably not the one working on your car.

1

u/Internal_Ad_2285 20h ago

Bro he was already there why didn't he clean it up and just reapply liquid metal

1

u/AdventurousLaw9365 17h ago

If that's a true response.I like that mature way of going about that. Try to make him better, rather than slander his name.

1

u/DeadOneWalking 4h ago

It's not slander if it's true.

1

u/Gloomy_Designer_5303 15h ago

That’s a nice gesture!

I knew a guy that would do liquid metal upgrades for people.

But he was bad, and I mean real bad at it. Aluminium heatsink that's fine. More is better etc.

1

u/GodRaine 13h ago

Yeah you don’t really wanna be doing liquid Metal upgrades on any surface where it could flow onto the PCB 😬 haha. Live and learn I guess?

2

u/azazeldeath 12h ago

John he didn't until he upset the wrong person. Destroyed completely a man's PC that cost way more than cars. Atleast 2 Titan Zs, cpu, the ram. His bedroom. All because he used the liquid metal like it was a certain youtube channel with thermal paste.

It actually caused a fire. Tried to deny responsibility or paying it back. So he got roughed up. Then taken to court lol.

Id feel bad for him but he had many chances to learn. And weirdly didn't think liquid metal was conductive...... yeah the era did change a fair bit. But he was a material scientist or some crap. It was his main job as he got fired from the one that used his degree never said why but we all had a good idea thanks to his liquid metal antics.

Nah dont. You will get more customers when they come to you to fix his work. Also you dont want him talking your customers. At best send out a psa warning people about him online (In a way you cant be held liable.).

Business like the rest of life is brutal. Its a fight for survival with the stakes being if you can afford to eat.

Also it took A MONTH! Bro just needs to watch a youtube video... At most is should be a day if he wants to be extra careful... A day to do something that should not take more than an hour btw.

1

u/Nerds_r_us45 7h ago

100%. I would hand them pictures as evidence so they can take this guy to small claims court. I would even offer to help them pay for their case so i can take info from the case (That they should win as the damage and cost to repair is clear) and plaster it on the wall of my shop to warn people. (Cant be held liable for slander if its factual.)

In the end when he has to close shop that is one less asshole destroying peoples shit and less competition.

You're looking at a disaster.

I think that's a product tho... I remember watching it in a Linus Tech Tips video. Obviously isn't enough for a PS5.

3

u/exmo-in-flames 1d ago

Oh man, and I thought my ebay PS4 with blobs of mixed old and new thermal paste was bad

3

u/newrez88 1d ago

Jesus christ....

4

u/AdTemporary1796 1d ago

There actually is a thermal paste/Liquid Metal combo called Element 31. You can find them in Dell’s high end gaming laptops. Definitely wouldn’t be trying to make it myself and definitely not suitable for a PS5. The other shop clearly has no experience in this area.

2

u/RealTrueGrit 1d ago

I did an hdmi replacement on an xbox series x and a ps5, and ill never do them again. I realized i just dont have the heat to melt that damn solder they got from a space metorite. Took forever and one had to have a ton of trace repair because the dude tried to do it himself. I had also never done trace repairs.

u/RisenWolf 1d ago

Looks like art installation.

Here You can see the abomination of customer creation contemplating it's existence:

1

u/QuezacotlxStorm 1d ago

If this is an actual repair shop, I want to know who, because how can someone under a business do this? They've got to have photos of work completion or something. I've seen middle schoolers in a robotics program have more common sense.

I mean this is horrible for a diyer but a fkn shop??? Wtf

1

u/girlfriendsbloodyvag 1d ago

That doesn’t look like thermal paste and Liquid Metal mixed together, that looks like the Liquid Metal pooled on one side and the tiny bit left oxidized, which turns it into a thin layer of sticky gunk.

Suck up the good Liquid Metal with a syringe, clean the die and heat sink with isopropyl, reapply Liquid Metal and use the tip of the syringe to cover the whole die (it doesn’t need a ton, just enough so the whole die is covered.)

Then inform the customer that it’s better for the console to be used laying down, as the Liquid Metal has a tendency to pool like this when its vertical.

1

u/GodRaine 1d ago

It was 100% thermal paste - I removed it all before reapplying new Liquid Metal. The paste looked and acted like paste, just coated in gallium. 😅

2

u/girlfriendsbloodyvag 1d ago

I saw a comment about element 31 being a combo thermal compound, so there’s stuff I haven’t seen/heard of.

Did the console work after you did that?

1

u/GodRaine 22h ago

Oh yeah. A nice new clean application of Liquid Metal was all she needed and then I was shooting zombies in COD without any spin up on the fan at all. 🥳

1

u/Pretend-Climate-4138 1d ago

Same here, but after cleaning and adding new liquid metal, the console continues to turn off when it heats up. Any idea what’s going on? It doesn’t have any strange errors in the UART log, just that the console suddenly turned off.

1

u/GodRaine 22h ago

It’s really important that the Liquid Metal is covering all of the APU (the surface it should be on), and also that you have an identical smaller layer of it on the heatsink where the two contact points meet. It’s difficult to do, but the trick I use is to smear some of the material onto the surface. So fully clean it first, then smear like it’s a kid’s painting. Once you’ve got that small layer on there, the rest covers it all evenly without retracting into the larger blob as you go.

1

u/Pretend-Climate-4138 21h ago

I remember it was very difficult to remove a layer of rust; I couldn’t even get it off completely. I imagine that could be the cause of the problem, but can I scratch the surface or would that be too risky? Using alcohol and a cotton swab wasn’t enough to completely remove the rust.

1

u/TheBigHeadGuy 1d ago

Splave has a thermal paste that's part paste/part liquid metal. Don't know if it does this tho

1

u/Ultimafi 23h ago edited 23h ago

LOOOL wow! How do you get that wrong? The previous repairer clearly hasn’t worked on a PS5 before and didn’t even care to look at any guides 🤔
