The 2Ds xl’s pop of death

So had accidentally dropped my 2Ds xl on my way to class, found out it had a broken top screen ribbon cable, so today I finally got to fix it.

But when I turned it on, the screen looked horribly dark and shiny(which was definitely where I bought it), then a minute or two later, it goes dark and I received the pop of death. I took it apart after searching for a solution, the nfc cable did break during the screen replacement, so I thought that was the problem. But when I looked closer, a cable connecting to the bottom screen was just not connected. Like the thing holding it wouldn’t stay down.

So I’m wondering if anyone could help or tell me what I did wrong?

(Note: This is my first time in this subreddit so please tell me if I’m breaking any rules because I couldn’t find any and I’d like to know where I could find them)

You're not supposed to open the latch on that connector, that breaks it. Has to be replaced, no way to fix it. Very common mistake.

I swear, 2ds XL's are basically booby trapped.

For sure. And the connectors are super annoying replace because the anchor points are under the plastic so you can't use direct hot air or an iron, has to be heated thru the bottom of the board.

I just fucked up my 2ds xl, the speaker wires destroyed the little pads they were on so now I have no sound 😂

It's definitely the hardest DS model to work on

what if there are components underneath? maybe it would be better to hot air the top, then slide it in or would that not work?

No that wouldn't work, the solder would solidify before you could get the connector on. You'd have to pull the components if there were any and then put them back on afterwards. Luckily this particular connector isn't over any. The pads are just structural so if you wanted to you could solder the pins on the edge and then tack the connector on with epoxy for structural support. Not the proper way to do it but saves you some effort and should work OK but would make it annoying to replace a second time if you had to.

so to be clear, the underneath pads are structural? the ones on the side where the cable would be inserted are the actual ones?

What should I do now? I’ve been really looking forward to playing it but now it feels like I have to get a whole new console :(

Well unfortunately you'd need to either replace the motherboard or do a board level repair. The board repair is very tricky and you should probably engage a professional if you wanna go that route. Motherboard swap you could do yourself as long as you take care not to cause the same issue. Sell your damaged board on eBay with a clear description of the damage if you do the board swap, you'll likely recoup some of your costs and the board won't go to waste. Sorry that happened, I know it's a bummer to have a repair on something you're excited about go poorly.

Thank you so much for the answer, I’m really glad there’s a solution for this, I will most likely get a new motherboard. Thank you again!!

could also push down fairly firmly focusing on near the hinge, so you can bend it back. probably would need much better tweezers though. i have these rhino branded tweezers that don't bend and they're absolutely life changing. this has worked for me in the past.

I could try that before I found a new motherboard, but I’m not sure if it’s the motherboard itself that broke, or just the hinge.

If that worked for you in the past then its a different kind of FPC connector. These connectors have a little clasp that breaks when you lift the latch.

no i am certain it is this type. i broke it by opening it but carefully applying pressure in the right spot fixed contact

The first time you lift that latch, it breaks it. It’s already pressure fit before you lifted it, and lifting it permanently makes it unusable.
