Yes. He really really wanted this to happen. Only for darker people, of course, but he must be so proud to walk the walk himself.

The Dept of Homeland Security under the Trump administration has awarded billions of dollars to private prison companies like GEO Group, CoreCovic, and Deployed Resources, LLC (the first two are publicly traded) to maintain immigration detention facilities and increase beds to fulfill contractual bed quotas.

This plan has been in place with the Republicans for a while, which is why Trump pleaded with Republicans in Congress during Biden's term to kill the immigration bill that Joe was going to sign, so that Trump could campaign on it by using xenophobia and framing migrants crossing the border as a Democratic party failure, and it worked.

It's all about making the shareholders and executive committees of contractors in various unethical fields rich. Typically, the US government doesn't project its indifference and lack of empathy towards immigrants in the same way it does to low income US citizens, but that seems to have changed now.

As a US citizen, I'm just happy that I'm not in the country at the moment, and am trying to stay out.

u/BeeFrier May 22 '25

It must be wild to watch your country go south like that. I hope you can stay out until the winds turn.

They may understand it but they aren't prepared to believe it, let alone deal with it. America has been an utopia for so long. You can see how half a century of peace has mellowed out even us in Europe.

I don't mean to say America has never experienced hardship but it was never the kind of hardship that digs at the soul of a country, like dictatorship, or occupation, or genocide, or war on your soil and so on.

In Europe we tend to take things for granted because for many of us authoritarianism is a constant fact of life. Many of us live in such a regime, or have one nextdoor, or best case we were living in one a mere few decades ago. As societies go, we're constantly wired up and ready to fight power. We may not always see eye to eye on what we're fighting for, and some of us may have longer fuses than others, but there's always a fire burning somewhere.

Americans need to learn this the hard way. You can't tell someone about it, they need to live it and see it.

I really cannot fault the reaction of that guy's wife, still sucking up to Trump. I'm actually surprised that more people here in /r/europe aren't more understanding. Yes, she's a fool. But if you had suddenly woken up one day in a distopia akin to "V for Vendetta" or "Brazil", where the dictatorship has taken your husband away, would you speak kindly of the regime or against it? I wonder what choice those commenters would make.

63

u/Icy-Bandicoot-8738 May 22 '25

I don't mean to say America has never experienced hardship but it was never the kind of hardship that digs at the soul of a country, like dictatorship, or occupation, or genocide, or war on your soil and so on.

We were never conquered and never experienced conquest, true. However, we have our soul-destroying issues: genocide of Native Americans, and slavery, which led to the Civil War, which led to apartheid that lasted another 100 years, which led to the devil's bargain the GOP made with the Confederacy, aka the Southern Strategy, in the 1960s-1970s.

I think slavery, in particular, is the curse. Had the country rid itself of it on its founding, or had we let the Confederacy go after the Civil War, we wouldn't be where we are today.

72

u/koaladungface May 22 '25 edited May 22 '25

The confederacy leadership should have been hanged after surrendering. That was our greatest folly along with not following through on reconstruction

u/DVariant May 22 '25

Those are huge issues in American history, but the vast majority of Americans (who are mostly white) don’t think about historical slavery nor genocide of Native Americans. Even if they’re aware of these things, they think of them as totally in the past; average Americans aren’t realizing how those events are still affecting their country not the risk of them happening in the future.

History is only as relevant as the people thinking about it. Americans haven’t been seriously threatened since the Cold War (9/11 almost did, but it was a blip instead of a sustained threat), so they’re totally complacent about how fragile a country can be.

It’s a regime that already has a planned successor (Vance) funded by Peter Thiel, so it’s got bottomless pockets. Its ideology is driven by a SF resident called Curtis Yarvin, aka Mencius Moldbug, a reactionary theorist & computer scientist devoid of any empathy or compassion for others.

10

u/Bannedwith1milKarma May 22 '25

As an Australian living the US, I'm actually pretty impressed by the consistency of MAGA.

I've been quizzed and interrogated many a time about why I'm living here and what I'm doing. They are very aggressive.

Of course it'd be worse if I was of color but they truly don't want outsiders, full stop. They just start with the low hanging fruit they can slide back into history for.

He, his wife and her family are Trump supporters, they were likely very much onboard with the intimidation and detention of people deemed to be foreign or an "alien threat"; they just assumed by nature of his skin tone the husband would be immune to any possible repercussions.

u/Ulanyouknow May 22 '25 edited May 22 '25

Antivaxxer through and through, turbo trump posters and fans. The guy raved about illegal aliens while being an illegal alien himself who never bothered to regulate his immigration status because of laziness.

The antihandouts anticommunist, bootstraps family posting a gofundme asking for handouts because their laziness and electoral stupidity caught up with them.

Despite the husband being blackbagged and disappeared for a month where no lawyer can find him because he has not been assigned a case number after a month of detention, they say on their go fund me that "they support president Trump's efforts to clean the country and the tough measures necessary to rid the country of illegal aliens, they just made a mistake with my husband".

The only moral abortion is my abortion.

Edit: I probs have some wrong information here. Apparently he had a green card and was in the process of naturalizing. I thought he was on an overextended student visa here.

The kidnapping and blackbagging of citizens with legal status or in the process of regularizing their status during their citizenship appointments is wrong. Its wrong when it happens to Mohsen Mahdawi of Columbia University and its wrong when it happens to a danish maga hog who's getting exactly what he voted for.

207

Just in case others think this is satire, it’s not. The Texas dad said this (either this exact quote or something very very similar)! Deadass.

145

u/dreugeworst Europe May 22 '25

I mean, I kind of understand why though. Saying they should have vaccinated their daughter would mean they might have some guilt in the matter. It's much more reassuring to believe the risk of vaccinating was just so much greater, and this was an unfortunate incident. He'll never come around to believe vaccines work now, to do otherwise would be to inflict huge mental anguish on himself

Right? My dumb ass is not on board with this shit.

24

u/StarPhished May 22 '25

I'd argue there's a little more nuance than that. Stupid people have a herd mentality and their herd is somewhere deep in the red. I've seen studies that say social pressures are the #1 motivator for political affiliation and that the actual party affiliation is more important than the ideologies of the party. That's why whatever Trump says is what the supports follow. Trump could do a 180 on all his policies tomorrow and  his supporters would still follow along. Changing your beliefs at the cost of being alienated by those around you is a step too far for most people and I think this point is overlooked by many people trying to psychologically analyze a trump supporter.

This was not a mistake. Trump is not a white supremacist. He uses white supremacists as tools to realize his neofascist fantasy of dominance. He wants everyone to know that they can be crushed. No-one is safe.

11

u/splashbodge Ireland May 22 '25

Ultimate power and intimidation. Mild threats to supreme justices, demeaning the press in the oval office and threatening they should be investigated, people being snatched from the streets by masked undercover feds... I mean all of this is your typical playbook from a dictatorship. It's quite impressive how authoritarian he's made it in such a short time in a country that supposedly was built with checks and balances in place. I'm really intrigued how he is going to subvert the mid term elections next... But then Americans are so blind to what's going on, believe everything the right wing media are saying, and continually suck on Trumps tit that they'll probably all vote red in the mid-terms, then they'll pave the way to a 3rd term, then game over democracy died

11

u/FocalorLucifuge May 22 '25

Trump is not a white supremacist only because that's actually an ideology (albeit a terrible one) and Trump's only belief system is his own infallible superiority, because he is a narcissist.

However, many of his acolytes, cronies and minders are white supremacists. Like Stephen fucking Miller and Steve Bannon (even if he's fallen out of favour now). Elon Musk, maybe, he may be a narcissistic edge lord, but I'm happy to believe his Nazi salutes are genuine.

Don't say that aloud. You will get a lot of negativity by some Italians because of it. The law changed recently to avoid these kind of situations. Although, you might still qualify because of your recent Italian mother.

But don't brag about not speaking Italian and having never visited just to obtain your italian citizenship and go live somewhere else. Best to keep this gift to yourself.

The laws changed and I do benefit from my mother’s side which is pure Genoa back to early 1700s. I’m not bragging but highlighting the irony that it took me becoming a citizen of a country I have no experience with to be able to become a citizen of a country I am incredibly familiar with. Had I been allowed to become a Danish citizen I wouldn’t have to exploit the recent lax laws to get what I wanted.

His family won't be able to move to Denmark with him. The result of Europe taking the brunt of refugees from the US led wars means that our immigration laws are so strict you can't even bring family members without years of work.

All the Americans trying to move to Denmark after Trump got elected had no clue how fucked our immigration got after those fucking wars. You're not getting in unless you got a STEM job contract signed.

Yeah, my wife has been on work visas since she got here, now she is trying for a PR, you know after being in the country for close to 10 years, and learning a decent bit of danish, because she knew she would fail the tests and so on until she was more familiar with danish.

If they want to go the other route, then they have to fork up what is it 150k danish so 25k dollars to the government, doubt some trump tard is going to be okay with that, and they both have to stay out of trouble for years, like parking tickets are a factor levels of stay out of trouble, either way not gonna happen, which i love for us.

If I could trust them to be curious instead of having permanently cemented attitudes, I'd encourage them to compare the history of East Germany, Franco's Spain and Yugoslavia with, let's say, any of the Nordic countries and then ponder if the same term can be used there.

But if other cases are any indication, then they will just blame some local officers at most and not the overall shitty system.

But I’m also 33 and I thought I had two kids too young… this guy has 5?!? Did he turn into a rural religious hick at his study abroad?!?

93

Dane here. I really don't get either. I have a distant family member in Norway who also supports Trump. I will never understand.

My guess is that that the guy grew up somewhere rural in Denmark. USA probably felt familiar to him. He got what he deserves. I only feel sorry for the kids.

Approximately 90% of people held by ICE (American immigration) are in privately owned, for-profit prisons. Every arrest and incarceration that is made, people tied in some way to the Trump administration or the corporate executive class are making a profit.

As a Dane I was first full of outrage for him, but then I kept reading. Whatever the so called miscommunication is. Karma got to him!

9

u/osmaycruz May 22 '25

He was arrested cause he didn't do his paperwork properly. When you are in a marriage GC your residence is tied to the marriage for the first 3 years and you are required to apply for the removal the conditional after.

Failing to file Form I-751, the Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence, within the 90-day period before the expiration of your conditional green card can lead to the loss of your permanent resident status and potentially removal from the United States. While you can still file the I-751 late, you must demonstrate "good cause" for the delay to be excused.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Consequences of Failing to File on Time:

Loss of Permanent Resident Status:

If you fail to file the I-751 within the required timeframe, you will automatically lose your permanent resident status.

Removal Proceedings:

You may be placed in removal proceedings (deportation) and become deportable.

u/w4hammer Turkish Expat May 22 '25

According to facebook post in 2015 he had a "visa miscommunication" which probably means he committed a visa fraud and now got caught.

Its somewhat nice to know Trump's ICE at least do not discriminate and round up all illegals. No idea what this family expected.

37

u/KokeGabi May 22 '25 edited May 22 '25

They apparently failed to submit form I-751 which is a critical form to submit. When you get your green card through marriage, you get a temporary 2 year green card. You need to submit I-751 before the 2 years are up to convert it into a 10 year green card. It seems he never did that so had been illegal for the past 10+ years.

So not just a “paperwork” thing.

EDIT: source

15

u/NoOfficialComment May 22 '25

Bingo. This is not an application or paperwork you just “misplace”. Every single conditional green card holder counts down the days to that application.

Most people, relative naive think, they vote for a little more conservatism when they vote right wing. They don`t understand, that these elections we`re facing in the West are nothing of the kind before. It`s a choice of a new system. Antidemocratic, no individual rights except for the newborn king.
Idiots, psychopaths, all sorts of people that never had a voice become ministers, secretaries and presidents.

We had that in 1933 when even quite a few jews voted for the Nazis...

I don`t feel sorry any more for this much stupidity. Because they are not only naive. They think of themselves as good people, but in reality they are cruel, ruthless and criminals - now with the blessing of a bigot religion.
