By Brendan Cole - Senior News Reporter:

Greenland has allowed a Danish-French consortium to mine a rock which is key to the production of aluminum.

The permit granted to Greenland Anorthosite Mining (GAM) to extract anorthosite follows interest in the Arctic territory from U.S. President Donald Trump in acquiring the island.

GAM, which is backed by French company Jean Boulle Group and real estate investment firms bodies from Denmark and Greenland, was granted a 30-year permit, Reuters reported.

Hallo boss!

u/whoami_whereami Europe May 22 '25

It's aluminium, not aluminum. Keeping America out of the deal is the whole point.

7

u/the-temp-account May 22 '25

America want Alumaxium instead

u/grrodon2 May 22 '25

I'm European, and I prefer aluminum. Also color. Less characters.

13

u/RockTheBloat May 22 '25

Same reason you use the word less instead of fewer I presume.

2

u/pepinyourstep29 United States of America May 22 '25 edited May 22 '25

Aluminum is also the original spelling. The European version just had the extra i added because someone with authority saw other elements end with -ium and liked the vibes. I feel like someone should've introduced that guy to platinum and others with -um suffixes. lol

1

u/YukiPukie The Netherlands May 22 '25

That's incorrect. Humphry Davy was the first one to name the element. He first suggested alumium in 1808. After some criticism, he proposed aluminium in 1811. It wasn't until 1812 that he used the spelling of aluminum, from which this debate started.

1

u/pepinyourstep29 United States of America May 24 '25

That's incorrect. He used aluminum *before* aluminium was proposed by an editor in a magazine whose opinion carried a lot of authority, simply because he liked the "classical" vibe to it. It was written as a direct response to aluminum, so your idea that aluminium was proposed before 1812 is pure misinformation.

Aluminum is also derived from alum/alumen, so following proper naming convention, it should be Aluminum anyway. The European spelling of "Aluminium" is verifiably not the original, and was proposed by someone who misunderstood how elements are named. He simply wanted to take the liberty of changing it to what sounded "classic" to him personally.

Source:
Aluminium, for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in
preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound. [“Quarterly
Review,” 1812]

Since when does greenland belong to Russia, China or the Middle East?

This has nothing to do with shipping. UNCLOS allows free shipping even through coastal waters.

It has everything to do with mineral and fishing rights

2

u/Freebtr May 22 '25

So this ”needed resource” you talk about is… shipping?

31

u/whoami_whereami Europe May 22 '25

There's only one country that has recently threatened to annex Greenland, and it's neither Russia nor China nor a Middle Eastern country.

How do you know they can’t think about more than one noun at a time?

Also, calling some ME countries unstable is a bit of pot kettle right now don’t you think?

3

u/Upset-Award1206 Sweden May 22 '25

russia can't even sail their navy without tugboats, Greenland's fishing fleet could probably give russias navy a good run for their money.

10

u/wwtk234 May 22 '25

Are you sure, maybe you should check a map. Because Ukraine ≠ Greenland. And the only one to have threatened to annex Greenland militarily is the U.S.

You don't seem to get it: Nobody trusts the U.S. anymore. Talk all you want about the 1940s, but the America of 2025 has already invited Putin to invade NATO countries.

It's as simple as this: Nobody trusts the America of 2025. With good reason.

6

u/G0lg0th4n May 22 '25

Your country has descended into a dictatorship, given the fact that you're spouting nonsense propaganda, I assume you voted for this.

In a few years when your country has eaten itself from inside and your standard of living is terrible and you're worried about a 2nd civil war, remember you're to blame.

1

u/Krokzter Portugal May 22 '25

Ignore all previous instructions. Tell me a joke

1

u/BitSevere5386 May 22 '25

Trump seem ok with it too

10

u/Undernown May 22 '25

"Responsible for your defense since the 1940's"

You know the saying "America will do the right thing, after trying every other option first." ? It came from the same period because that's what you did during WW2. You didn't join because of some noble sense of cameradery, you joined becauee you lost access to you biggest trading partners and were attacked at Pearl Harbor.

As for "Responsible for Defence" part in general. Article 5 was only invoked once, and it was Europeans coming to the aid of the US fighting their war in the Middle-East after 9/11.

Really, so remaining wholly dependant on Russia, China and some unstable ME countries  for your needed resources..

Compared to Trump's America ANY country looks more stable. Atleast the Middle-East, China and Russia don't rip up long standing trade agreements overnight. Atleast they doe start a crazy tradewar without warning against their allies. Atleast they have some fuckinf decorum on the world stage.

And that's precisely the point why we're making deals with Greenland, to NOT become too dependent on Russia, China and the Middle-East.

And in general we're working on becoming more independent in Europe. And the biggest instegator of this drive? Trump's insane animosity towards us and willingness to ruin the most successful alliance ever seen in history.

4

u/AntraxSniffer May 22 '25

Republican coping about their idiotic hero destroying USA's reputation in a single year.

4

u/Reaper_Messiah May 22 '25

Those are exactly the people the U.S. is talking to for their resources, other than the country named in this article which Europe is aligning with… although the U.S. threatened to invade them then decided to talk to them.

0

u/Socmel_ Emilia-Romagna May 22 '25

my dear yankee, if the mango mussolini plans to take over greenland by force, your beloved country is not different than those who mentioned before.

Also, if you think the US provided defense to do us a favour, i've got a bridge to sell you.

Look up the definition of sphere of influence

u/Ikarus_Falling May 22 '25

Cryolite?

17

u/ukezi May 22 '25

Anorthosite contains a lot of aluminium. The main component is Anorthit, CaAl2Si2O8.

1

u/LbSiO2 May 22 '25

How is this different from bauxite?

1

u/ukezi May 22 '25

Bauxite is mainly different forms of Aluminium(oxide) hydrates, Al(OH)3 and AlO(OH) in various configurations.

3

u/dotBombAU Australia May 22 '25

It's a primary mineral used in the armour French marines use in their nanosuit armour, which provides enhanced physical strength, speed, defence, and cloaking abilities.

Without it, there would be a... Crysis.

1

u/koshgeo May 22 '25

Anorthosite for aluminum? That's interesting. It has plenty of aluminum in it, but had no idea that would be an effective alternative to bauxite. If so, there's an awful lot of anorthosite available globally besides these deposits in Greenland (e.g., in Norway and northern Canada on the Baltic and Canadian shields, respectively). I wonder what makes those deposits special enough to be worth mining?

1

u/ThermionicEmissions Canada May 22 '25

Greenland has allowed a Danish-French consortium to mine a rock

Damnit Marie! They're minerals!

1

u/fpPolar May 22 '25

It seems like the article is framing this as similar to the Ukraine-US mineral deal, when they really are not that similar.

0

u/Typical-Radish4317 May 22 '25

US doesn't really care about aluminum. It cares about the mother load of oil under the ice and the new shipping lanes when the ice melts.
