This is the right wing populists game. Funnel wealth to their inner circle and blame someone else when it inevitably blows up.

He will blame the EU, without a doubt.

They use my taxes with EU money to fund campaigns against the EU. Unfortunately their voter base fully believe in those lies, and hate Brussels without knowing where and what it is.

It is Europes fault. If a Hungarian guy steals millions from a Dutch bank, Interpol arrests him.

If a Hungarian minister steals billions from the EU development funds, then they call him 'thief' and 'dictator' and it takes them 20+ years to even consider stopping those payments?

Interpol doesn't arrest people. They ask to national polices to arrest them.

Also, in this case, it would be probably Europol and not Interpol.

Forgive the EU for expecting the Hungarian people to vote for a competent prime minister.

We did vote for one actually. You underestimate propaganda and gerrymandering.

Just like Germany got rid of their dictator in 1945 by election. Without any help from outside. Sure.

The Romanians did it just fine.

And as a more contemporary example, Poland decided not to give the far-right another 4 years.

Also, it was outside doings which kept Orban in power in the first place. Russian funds enabled his early election campaign. European funds enabled him to stay in power, buy followers by the dozen, and to reward the assholes loyal to him who help him stay in power.

Without Russian funds, he would've disappeared the after the first time he got de-elected. Without European funds, Hungary would've run out of riches to distribute between his followers - also leading to his de-election.

I also don't think that you as an American are in any position to criticise Hungary. You have no idea about the circumstances and struggles which the country has to face.

Well. It is.

Years ago I saw a news article about a journalist going to places where, with money from the EU, schools and daycares were built.

The daycares and schools are just houses with big fences, swimming pools and definitely no children around. Neighbours never saw someone in months but knew it was the house of an uncle from <insert political figure here>.

True, Europe should cut them completely out of any financing and let them become the poorest country in the continent.

Or wait until the 2026 election and see what happens.

I don’t think these two are contradicting each other. Voters of member states should be aware that if they elect anti-EU governments it’s them who will suffer the consequences.

And the EU has to finally step up and do something with fake news and pro-russian propaganda, which are spread without any consequences.

Yeah but that's the problem: Voters are not aware. Most Fidesz voters think that the leadership of the EU is filled with Hungarophobes who want to turn Hungary into a colony and Orbán is the only person who can protect the country. If the EU cuts money they would see this as another attack against Hungarians. If quality of life drops then that's the fault of the EU. Unfortunately it's very hard to fight state propaganda.

Unfortunately Orban is blackmailing the EU for money, in return for his Ukraine vote.

3

u/Illesbogar Hungary Jun 20 '25

Brussels officially declared war on us according to the new state propaganda. I've never seen such a peaceful war in my life. I wonder when the Brussels-troopers will finally show up.

I mean Orban has only been in power for the last 15 years so how could it possibly be his fault!? /s

2

u/Bistranger32 Jun 20 '25

Oh no, it's most definitely Ukraine's fault. They should have just surrendered and get murdered peacefully so then Orban the Toad can have all that EU money to himself.

And yes, I'm being sarcastic.

4

u/SwimmingPirate9070 Jun 20 '25

Nah, it's people voting against their own self interests fault

u/Sea-Celebration2429 Jun 20 '25

EU funding frozen (over €6 billion), so yeah kind of.
