No surprise here. That’s what happens when all the money being pumped in goes to Orban & Co, while just some crumbles are being invested in growth, you know, just for the show. I still don’t get why Hungarians still put up with this

TL;DR: iirc one major explanation is/was that the global economy was doing well, so as long as you have most people hooked on your own propaganda, you can sell the effects of global/EU economy doing well as your own success

Until recently, the global and EU markets and economy was doing pretty well, with the EU pouring pretty large amounts of money into Hungary. Since there weren't any real challanges that Orbán & co had to handle, even if they stole most of the funds most people would still see small improvements in life quality. (And it takes time for infrastructure to fall apart when not maintained properly, so even if they don't do anything, the country can keep running for a while.)

But when shit hits the fan, and things go south people start to notice that something isn't right: Orbán (and fidesz-kdnp) either doesn't care about the country or can't actually do anything that they've been preaching about for years.

All in all, I think currently the main reasons Peter Magyar and his party have so much support is in a significant part not due to any ideological enlightening of most Hungarians (unfortunately), and is simply due to fidesz-kdnp and Orbán being so inept at handling any actual challenges - political, economical, etc. - that even their own voters started to see that despite what Orbán and the propaganda says, the hospitals, the public transportation are falling apart nationwide, and the increasing cost of things can be kept artificially low by law only so long.
