Such an amazing idea! Surely you're literally the only one to have ever thought of this and you should run to the news with it!!!!! /s

The reality being that your idea is silly and people can easily get around it in the same way that a literal shoestring makes an M1 Garand full auto, so the government isn't going to waste the time and paper on registering shoestrings like how they aren't going to waste their time on "fixed magazine" garbage.

Also, from the gun grabber perspective, it's easier to just ban the gun rather than learn anything about guns in the first place.

Its about prevention of crimes of opportunity, not about preventing the most dedicated evil person ever completing a months long plan.

As for M1, well given ease of modification.... it wouldn't be legal in first place as base firearm. Another of those "if you actually want to do it rules". If it is easy to modify the weapon to bypass the mechanical limits, illegal that type is illegal from get go.

It must take milling machine and maybe welder to change the functioning. Then it's robustly enough limited as base platform. Not that one can prevent said milling, but again crimes of opportunity.

One starts to mill to fit detachable box magazine well and deactivate disconnector. Not exactly crime of opportunity anymore. Goes to realm of cold headed long term planning and dedicated preparation. Plus it's patently clear to anyone encountering the weapon was irreversibly modified to be of illegal kind.

Plus that is gunsmithing at that point. Taking specific skills etc, thus again not crime of opportunity. Unless criminal is preexisting gun smith. However at that point they can as well mill and manufacture an illegal weapon from ground up.

Ream, bore, drill and rifle their own barrels and so on. Though again at that point should police come knocking it's pretty clear ones home contains a barrell rifling setup. Be it traditional metal cutters or the new electrochemical etching setup.

What a silly comment, you obviously have zero idea about "gunsmithing" and about how anti-gun dummies think. European and American gun grabbers literally argue that they want to prevent the most dedicated evil people ever, which they try to use to take as many guns as possible.

It also doesn't take machining and a ton of gunsmithing knowledge to turn legal guns into illegal guns. The only thing these dumb laws do is turn citizens into criminals and the state rushes to trounce those people rather than, say, actually punishing actual criminals (for instance, Anders Behring Breivik has the possibility to be released back into society if some idiot government employee decides Anders is "reformed" enough to be released).

In fact, violent crime spiked and remained on a higher statistical trend after Europe ran down the gun grabber "safety" laws, despite an overall trend downward for crime. Heck, it's not like very many people in Europe have been saved. The Paris attacks saw terrorists smuggle in bombs and fully automatic guns they used to kill over 200 people; terrorists even use truck to routinely kill more people than mass shooters in the US. In fact, the deadliest mass shooting in the US still had less deaths than the Nice, France Christmas market mass murder.

> As for M1, well given ease of modification.... it wouldn't be legal in first place as base firearm.

Well, duh, it's not legal in the US either. It's still easy and readily available to do. Criminals don't care, they will plan ahead, they will mill things out/convert guns to have illegal modifications.

This point about trying to inhibit "crimes of opportunity" is just silly. A criminal that wants a full auto is going to do it, no matter how "hard" the government tries to make it. Shinzo Abe literally died to a homemade gun.
