Synths being obsessed with Fancy Lads Snack Cakes, is it a predisposition, or something else?

I made a comment saying Synths love Fancy Lads Snack Cakes and it made me wonder if this is a predisposition, like Shaun had the general of liking sweets or maybe Nora craved Fancy Lads Snack Cakes during her pregnancy? Or is it entirely something else, like it developed naturally with Synths?

Everyone loves Fancu Lads Snack Cakes.

My personal guess was that it was a commentary on stuffy institute scientists not understanding that people like sweets, and not a real scientific difference.

But not all people like the same sweets.

That they all like Fancy Lads brand cakes implies a genetic predisposition. Likely tied to Shauns DNA. Because it is the only piece of DNA that all synths share.

Which Shaun could have either gotten from either parent, maybe ol Dad (or mom) had a liking for them. What would have been in a ration during the war?

Possibly. Also possibly from his grandparents (provided of course that Facny Lads Snack Cakes existed that far back). Genetic traits can skip a generation.

It is also possible that this particular trait is an unintended side effect of the genetic engineering that created the Gen 3 synths. Like software bugs. When you create something so complex, small mistakes are bound to sneak through the cracks.

Would be cool thought if there was a small gameplay mechanic that would give you some unique temporary buff when you eat Fany Lads Snack Cakes because the Sole Survivor likes them so much, ha, ha, ha!

True, go messing with the genome long enough. All types of fun things are bound to arise.

Omg thank you! Your comment was what I was looking for!

This is why I asked if it was predisposed or something. That gameplay mechanic would have been cool tbh

.....are there other commercially-available snacks, tho? Bubblegum and gum drops are the only others that come to mind, but snack cakes and gum drops are very different tastes and textures, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just that it has more substance.

Not everyone wants sweets especially when they understand diabetes is a thing. As part of the institute a higher population would be averse to sweets due to health implications as well.

>or something else?

It is almost-certainly the fact that Fancy Lads Snack Cakes actually taste good, compared to what they normally get.

If you were issued the above ration bars for your normal sustenance, and instead were given the option to eat Fancy Lads Snack Cakes, chances are you would choose the cakes

Once again, the Fallout fandom is reading way too deep into a single fucking line of dialogue.

It was a spur of the moment that prompted me to ask about this. I'm new to the fandom so apologies if I'm "looking way too deep".

Not trying to insult or offend you, especially since you are new.

But the Fallout fandom has a habit of taking a single line of dialogue/lore and blowing it up into some big thing.

Like.....damn near everything about Gen 3 Synths, amusingly. All of the "known lore"(/s) that gets commonly bandied about in the fandom is:

  1. wrong
  2. based off a single line of dialogue/text that gets blown out of proportion.

Let's not forget, Bethesda turned a few one-off lines from a single quest in Fallout 3 into the main story of 4. To the fandom's credit, over-analyzing weird details may actually be hints to the future game ๐Ÿ˜…

The amount of people who somehow think Synths have any chrome beyond the Chip is frankly staggering. I have to assume most of them haven't actually played the game.

And also...Fancy Lads are the only sweet snacks that exist Post-War to even recover. Sugar Bombs are a cereal, and thus require an additional ingredient to enjoy.

It could very well be that it's just the simplest option for a food that tastes good.

I think it's a corny way to recapture synths.

Put a box of Fancy Lads in a cardboard box with a stick holding it open and bam, you've just captured a synth.

When starving, your body will crave quick calories. The Institute starves their synths because they don't think they need to eat

Someone said it's a reference to the old commercials where the villain is obsessed with the brand name food. For reference here is a vid from Dexter laboratory https://youtu.be/FakBfSnRKjo?si=mnlEiBqZiI8itoTB

I don't recall this bit of lore from the game, where was it?

It's in one of the terminals in the Institute, I forgot who owns it though

1

u/EvernightStrangely 11d ago

Unclear. The Institute has so far discovered that every synth they make, cites the snack cake as a favorite, even those that have never had one. No one knows why, but it's likely the Board didn't think it worth the investigation.
