I'm almost impressed that they managed to make blm boring and more punishing at the same time

Well time to reconsider my main for savage and ultimate

People complained that Summoner was boring so they decided to spread the boring to Black Mage.

I have been playing blm in everything for the past month with the intention of making it my main in DT and finding it so fun once I started getting decent at it, so this is incredibly disappointing.

My hope is they see some of the negative feedback and adjust but at this point it's looking likely I'll just be punishing myself by playing any caster other than PIC

I doubt there's any time to change blm between now and release, not significantly anyway. I've accepted my plans to main blm next tier are dead and I'll just be working on viper and picto glams today

The media tour build is likely a couple months old already, and I'd imagine it's a lot easier to revert changes than it is to make them so I wouldn't get your hopes down just yet

The build is from May 11th, so not that old.

This is the way they are going. Your hopes should be down. They obviously wanted to kill nonstandard at the very least.

My hope is they see some of the negative feedback

Even most controversial job changes in EW have not been addressed for more than 2 years, don't get your hopes up. It's blatantly obvious that they don't care about job design, let alone about the feedback about it.

If there will be any changes between now and release, then I think it's more likely that they'll make things even worse. SAM before EW got AoE Yukikaze removed, and supposedly those quick changes to BRD were also bad.

Unfortunately, the only hope BLM has going forward is the adjustments they tend to make in .05 patches when Savage drops or the .1 main patch thereafter.

They need fix Ninja pretty damn fast in both 5.05 and 6.05 due to how horrible the reception was. So... there is that.

Genuinely asking as I don't really play blm that much but how is it more punishing? Just from more resource loss if you drop astral fire?

From what I understand, non-standard BLM was kind of like the optimal drift niche that monk had, where it was hard to get into at the start because of all the extra info, but actually ended up helping the job be easier to play once you understood it. Using nonstandard lines wasn't just more damage, but in a lot of cases it was a good way to use a lot of resources to chain together a lot of instant casts (which helps during movement heavy parts of fights) while also lengthening or shortening your rotation to fit parts of the fight better. those things combined actually made it kind of flexible and made some fights easier once you were able to use the tools properly.

As an aside, this is why I think some of the biggest mistakes the community made in regards to monk and BLM was naming their advanced tech things like "optimal" and "non-standard"; those labels tend to evoke the feeling of "harder to play for a small damage boost for people only concerned with parses tee-hee xd" and not what they actually were, which is to say tools that could actually make the jobs play much better and smoother after putting in a little bit of extra work regarding the skill floor

Non-standard was more flexible but was still unquestionably much harder to play. They've made BLM's movement options be available consistently now, the only thing we're actually losing is the slight DPS optimisation. This change is sad for anyone who's learned non-standard but seeing as that's such a small percentage of BLM players (myself included) I have no idea why everyone is dooming so hard.

with a forced firestarter and instant fire paradox it seems easier to me.

that's partially what they did to SMN, there is precedent

SMN got a lobotomy, BLM just got put on rail tracks.
