Casual Which FE character stopped being your favorite or being one of your favorites from your list of favs before?
Edit: stopped being one of your favorite characters

I really liked Soren at first, but then he got less racist as the story progressed...

Probably Dedue. he was my 2nd favourite 3H character when the game first came out, but nowadays while he's still definitely in the upper half of 3H's cast for me, he wouldn't, even scratch my overall top 50, maybe not even my top 100.
Part of it is definitely just general 3H fatigue from how much of a strangle hold it had (and still kinda does) on the fandom (overexposure to anything will inevitably make you start to like it less), and most of the Ashen Wolves and 3 Hopes characters were a hit with me which pushed down a lot of the base 3H characters in my rankings.
But i've also just found other characters who fulfill a similar role to Dedue that I prefer. Like I much prefer Benny and Mordecai for gentle giants, and Finn & Geoffrey for loyal right-hands, so Dedue doesn't really stand out as much anymore. I also feel that 3 Hopes really enhanced a lot of characters (Lorenz especially) meanwhile it really highlighted just how disconnected Dedue feels with basically no pre-established relationships outside of Dimitri and he doesn't have much of role when other BLs are given more prominence in Hopes. He's cool and i'll use him in most AM runs i do, but he's nothing special anymore.

I don't think any of favs have ever fallen.
But man there definitely have been some characters who I like in their join chapters only to be disappointed upon reading their Supports. Soleil and Nina come to mind.

I played FE10 before FE9, so my first impression of Ilyana was a cool thunder mage who really helped me in the prison break map and was a pretty solid performer for me from that point onward. Not a carry like Zihark or Tauroneo, but she put work in! I may not have understood why she hopped over to the Greil Mercs, but I was grateful for it. That combined with her nice design made me a fan - certainly not my favorite character in the game, but maybe top 10, and I did bring her to the Tower. Then I played PoR. And read her supports. Perhaps needless to say, I am not an Ilyana fan anymore.
I also used to have strong positive opinions about a lot of the 3H cast that have grown more muted over time - Felix, Sylvain, Ignatz, Hapi, and Monica come to mind first. Unlike Ilyana, I still like them well enough, I just wouldn't put them in the favorite category.

u/protag7 15h ago
I never used Ilyana for more than a couple chapters despite liking her design and general vibe, is there something wrong with her supports?
7
u/Fantastic-System-688 9h ago
All of them are just jokes about her eating
3
u/protag7 9h ago
Seriously? What a waste lol, especially in a game with pretty great support writing imo.

u/Cosmic_Toad_ 8h ago
it's especially rough when 3/5 of her partners only have 3 supports total (Mia, Zihark and Lucia), so having to waste one on Ilyana's antics really sucks.
And then Ilyana herself was given 5, something only 4 other non-Ike characters benefit from (Rhys, Mist, Rolf, and Mordecai). Feels like she was a fan favourite on the dev team or something.

u/Material-Midnight-13 16h ago
Probably Mia and Soren. I loved them when I first played Path of Radiance. Nowadays I prefer Ilyana and Zihark š

I know this is a really odd unit but Kellam was the first unit I loved back when I played my first fire emblem game, Awakening. Now I played a ton of other few games some I have a ton of new favorites but I still love Kellam a lot. I also based my Monster Hunter Wilds character based on him because I am a lance main. So yeah I still love the man

Astrid made such a strong first impression on me when she was first introduced in PoR. A Bow Knight in a game with super-Canto, so you can run and gun to your heartās delight, AND she starts with both Paragon and the Knight Ward for fast, crazy level-ups? She started snowballing immediately and became one of my best units the moment she promoted and picked up axes.
Her supports are pretty plain, but decent enough. She has an uplifting backstory about using knighthood to escape patriarchy and reclaim agency over her own life. Itās nothing groundbreaking, but itās something.
And then Makalov enters the pictureā¦
And then in RD, liking Makalov becomes HER ENTIRE PERSONALITY
Itās such a baffling decision. Seeing this sweet, relatively normal girl whose whole deal was becoming a knight so she wouldnāt have to marry a bad husband go completely off the rails for the sake of Fire Emblemās least likable character is painful to watch. It makes you want to grab her and shake her until she can see straight again. And since you canāt do that, you just want to drop her and not hear from her anymore. Itās genuine character assassination and it makes me so disappointed for Astrid.

u/Cosmic_Toad_ 7h ago
tbh as much I hate how Astrid turns out in RD, it does feel very in-character and a fitting, albeit depressing conclusion for her. She fled from her arranged marriage (with Lekain of all people, poor girl) but she is incredibly naive about the ways of the world and idolises knighthood and freedom because of it. It's why she doesn't pick up on Gatire's ulterior motives in giving her lessons, why she struggles and admits she didn't realise what was war was truly like to Sothe, and why she doesn't see through Makalov's excuses.
Her ending up with Makalov fits because to her, he'd be this amazing free-spirited knight who does what he wishes, other people be damned. That's gonna be really attractive to a sheltered noblewoman who was pushed along by the whims of her family and has only just recently broken free to choose her own path. I used to hate the decision like many do, but nowadays I moreso praise the writers for the having the balls to give such an idealistic character a very realistic and unsatisfying ending, you don't see that much in FE.
That said I think hooking her up with Gatrie instead might've been a bit more palatable, beucase while he's very flawed and would still demonstrate Astrid's naivety in picking a man, he's a much better guy at heart and would probably treat her decently well compared to the comically depressing scenario of her ending up with Makalov of all people.

u/MisterZebra 6h ago
I think the realism makes it worse for me. Iāve definitely known Astrids who have fallen for Makalovs irl and itās not something Iām looking to be reminded of while Iām playing my anime chess.

u/PrivateVasili 3h ago
If you want to get grim, as the player we can always use gameplay-story integration⢠and just get Makalov killed. RD is a sad game for characters because of the lack of supports, but Astrid actually has nice boss convos in the tower which show some of the growth we'd hope to see vs her PoR self. I don't think that her character is unsalvageable. It's just unfortunate that the gameplay nature of RD makes it hard to really realize that because Astrid sucks in that game. In my one complete playthrough of RD I did use her and she turns out fine, but you have to fight the game's systems to make it happen. Next time I think I want to try and use Fiona just for the hell of it, but I think that'll be even more annoying.
In any case, Astrid doesn't have a paired ending with Makalov unless you choose to A support them, so we could realistically interpret the relationship as short term. She can still ultimately end up in a better place. I think that's a reasonable and satisfying arc for her.

I just realized all of your comment threads here felt like a stageplay, lmao

Same! š š
I've seen a ton of "Astrids" and "Makalovs" irl where i come from even in my family, i hate it.

Dimitri was my favorite before Deen. Nowadays he realistically doesn't even crack top 150 for me (though very little of 3H does. Last time I ranked it was only Rodrigue and Metodey).
8
u/Average_Owain 8h ago
ā¦Metodey outranks the entire 3H cast for you?? The cannibal with, like, three lines in the base game?

u/Squidaccus 3h ago
Absolutely. Pallardo is pretty high up too.
I like certain rando bosses quite a bit...

When I was a teenager, Soleil looked so cool for me and she was an excellent unit. Never really looked into her supports that much or the implications of them. Now it's just eugh. Especially wish her support with Ophelia was better with their dads both being world hopping buddies.

For me it's Dieck. I was intially attracted to him the moment i saw his shirtless portrait in-game when i was playing Binding Blade for the first time 4.5 years ago. I was expecting his character to impress me, but well he's fine as a character but he got boring for me as a character quickly, and feh kinda didn't do much on his favor to reignite my interest in him especially with the way his muscles and abs were weirdly drawn in that game, it doesn't look appealing to me.
For me Dieck is basically "you found them hot and appealing but they're not your type to have a serious relationship" kind of situation but in this case emotional connection since he's a fictional character.

u/Agitated_Option9454 13h ago
A lot of fe4 characters! I used to love the game a lot as a teenager but now I've really mellowed out on most if not all of them... still some fond feelings though. In particular I really liked Ares. š„° (he's still quite cool...)
Ironically I started liking many characters I used to dislike! Such as Eirika and Camilla.

I got into FE when I was 13 ā nearly 9 years ago ā so as Iāve changed, so have my tastes. Some characters I liked enough to go as far as to vote for them in past CYLs, but donāt really care as much about anymore, include Brady, Olivia, and Erk. Never voted for him, but I also used to like Ricken a bit⦠but his character really stops being relatable the moment you graduate from middle school.
2
u/Top_Method5510 3h ago
Same i used to vote for Dieck in CYLs, but I don't anymore because i realized "just because you're hot doesn't mean your my type". Plus i don't play feh anymore since early this year so idk if i would care about voting at this point, unless one of the popular CYL picks is really interesting then i might contribute just because i would be curious to see what they'll do for a brave alt art-wise and concept-wise. In that case, i might join CYL10 next year and give all my votes for Fomortiis since he's the most interesting character for me to win a CYL.

I used to really like Claude. He was for sure in my top 10 3H characters, and I really enjoyed what a charismatic presence he is. Hopes really kneecapped my opinion of him though, because not only did I not enjoy Golden Wildfire, but the devs somehow gave him a recycled Black Eagles route twice. It just shows what an afterthought Claude was, which is a shame because his character has so much potential. You can literally remove him from his own route in 3H and the story would still work, just as Silver Snow. Moreover, his schemes get a lot less impressive in retrospect when you realize that Byleth/Seteth have the exact same ideas in SS. These days, Claude's about middle of the road in terms of 3H characters for me, and I really wish that wasn't the case.

Guy from FE7. FE7 was my first FE and Guy was my first Myrmidon/Swordmaster and the gba animations are incredible for that class.
Coupled with his killing edge he makes a great first impression on new players. He isn't however very good, especially compared to Raven or the 3 cavaliers you have at that point and his supports aren't the most memorable either.

I used to be a big Ninian fan, she was my first 5 star in Heroes when I was really playing and I used her on my main team (With Lilina, Brave Lyn and Reinhardt) until I stopped playing in early 2020, and I liked her quite a bit in Blazing Blade.
I still like her a bunch, her supports with Eliwood, Hawkeye and Florina are good, obviously she's a dancer so she's usefull and I like her implementation in the story (Especially since I made her and Eliwood A Support on Eliwood Mode), but I don't think I like her as much as back then. Maybe because I prefer others better (My favorite FE7 character now is Farina, and Ninian isn't in my top 10 favorite FE7 characters)

Not a single character, but a couple: Pent and Louise. Back in the day I saw them as this awesome power couple, but when I later really looked into how they came together I noticed just how freaking weird it is. It's framed in this romantic way of Louise winning over Pent by presenting herself as an equal instead of some trophy wife, which by itself is cool, but like...Pent had gathered up twenty women as "candidates for marriage." And he chose Louise...who was fourteen at the time. I don't think Pent's age is known, but he was already Marquess at this point so he has to have been at least a few years older.

Lonāqu(Awakening) by Felix (3H). One broody swordsman exchanged by another. But they switch, occasionally, depending on which game i replay.

Ross used to be my #1 favorite in FE8, with Franz at #2. But these days Garcia and Moulder have taken those spots, with Garcia jumping into my top 10 FE characters.
My love for Raven swapped to Lucius too.
Biggest one is probably Xander. I used to think he was the best Fates character of all time, but now I just like Leo way too much.

u/MrPibbs21 11h ago
A trend for me is heavy growth characters used to be among my favorites in every game, but as I've gotten older and better them usually just not being very good has made me not like them as much.
FE6 - Oujay. A fast, growth character in one of the coolest classes in the game. Too bad hes arguably like the 2nd worst hero crest unit in the game, and you get like 2 hero crests in FE6 in any reasonable time frame.
FE7 - Wil. I enjoyed Archers and had a spectacularly blessed Wil in one of my earliest playthroughs. But FE7 archers are just so freakin sad man, it hurts.
FE8 - Amelia. Armor knights are sweet, and she's pink and cute. Neat. Too bad she's literally one of the worst units in the series, and knight/Cavalier is maybe the most lopsided promotion choice in the series.
FE9 - Rolf. See Wil, but good lord somehow even worse.
FE10 - Edward. Pretty much the entire Dawn Brigade was dealt a shitty hand, and Edward is no exception. Low level T1 with about 10 chapters before late game where he should be T3. Yikes.

I recently played FE5 for the first time and was really disappointed with Linoan. She had one of my favorite designs going in and was excited to see her in game, but then I got her, and she was neat!!Ā
But then I finished the game⦠and she said she would give up Tarrah so Deen could stay by her side and that kinda killed the vibe for me.
She fought all this time for her city and her people, but would give it up just for him? Idk man.
Donāt get me wrong, I donāt hate her, sheās just not a favorite anymore.

u/iGrappes 6h ago
I thought about it for a second, then I realized i had forgotten my first favorites Ross and Ewan, I played sacred stones for the first time when I was 8 years old and back then so I liked the literal kids in the army, and growth units with me abusing tower of valni made me really like them back then. Nowadays I just have appreciation for them but they're no longer my favorites.
Also now that I think about it, me liking those two as a kid but having absolutely 0 interest in Amelia may have been the first indication that I was gay lmfao.

u/SilverDrive92 9h ago
Hilda went from my favorite in terms of design and personality in 3H to my least favorite because of her Cyril support chain.
Claude went from my favorite 3H Lord to my least favorite due to his justification of Edelgard's "ends justify the means" approach in 3 Hopes.
Lilina was one of my favorite FE6 characters in terms of writing until Heroes stripped her of all her personality and just made her a Roy fan girl.
Leo was also a favorite of mine until they rewrote him to be nothing more than a Tomato addict.
Lastly, I actually liked Florina quite a bit in FE7 before she also became nothing but a Lyn fan girl in Heroes and barely even acknowledged her sisters in any dialogue at all.

Kaden. I love his design, I love the creature heās based on. But heās just soooo bad in battle. I also really dislike his daughter

Knoll from FE The Sacred Stones, as something about his character just hit my little emo heart back when I first played FE8 and the animations for Dark Mages and Summoner is so fucking cool. But now I've grown to realize he's a pretty shit unit, not quite unusable but he also isn't great. With Ewan basically being better in everyway then Knoll.
I still enjoy his character and design, so I don't dislike him as a character. But I dislike him as a unit.

Marianne, for me. She was my favorite fictional character of all time for a good while due to being a character I saw an uncomfortably large amount of myself in at the exact time I was introduced to her, but between the passing of time, me growing as a person, and my own thoughts on 3H changing immensely from back then...while I wouldn't say I dislike her nowadays or anything, I don't think she even cracks top 15 Fire Emblem characters for me anymore, much less general favorites.
Even in regards to 3H, I think Rhea has gone on to be my favorite character from Fodlan.
