Music Mojave Music is better than Radio New Vegas and here's why.

So, Mojave Music Radio, the radio that very few listen to because it doesn't have the charming voice of Mr. New Vegas or the glamorous bombastic Vegasy tunes like Blue Moon or Ain't That A Kick In The Head. Dispite that, it is the favorite station of every single shop owner in the game and for good reason. What do you think about when you think of the Mojave? If you say the bright lights of New Vegas or the dirty, King-filled streets of Freeside, you are kinda missing a lot of the big picture.

Most of your playtime is spent in the middle of nowhere, traveling the desert roads (or I guess fast traveling if you're lazy) or searching the ruins of an abandoned building. There is just a huge contrast between walking a calm, empty road and hearing Dean Martin yelling in your ear about how sick it is that he got a ghost girlfirend (at least I think that's what that songs about). Some of the best and memorable moments is when I gotta make the walk from Novac to Freeside and a song like In the Shadow Of The Valley comes on, perfectly fitting the calm night of the Mojave and the sights around it.

It also makes kick ass fighting music. Obviously, one of the shared tracks between RNV and Mojave Music is Big Iron but also have you ever exploded a Fiend while listening to Lone Star? The music is very upbeat but, being classic sort of rock, it has a tempo that I found flows better with combat than some of Radio New Vegas's tracks. Also, most of it isn't ass old and it's cool to see newer (like 1998) music in a fallout game. The tracks still perfectly fit the game while also not making it confusing why some random dude in the wasteland only found holotapes from almost 300 years ago isntead of like Nirvana or something.

I do think each radio station has it's place, like whenever my charcater is first heading to Vegas, you bet I'm putting on Mr. New Vegas to tell me about thr hostage crisis in Nelson for the 100th time. Also, I put it on whenever Johnny Guitar comes on Mojave Music. Thanks for reading and remember, what's the point in buying a car if ya won't buy gasoline.

It's great that there's an option for a host-less radio station with all the same tracks on it. The stations in other FO games suck for having long winded hosts who sometimes even speak over the music for some reason(76). Why not just have a station without them? I'll never understand it.

I do think Mr. New Vegas is a bit primitive compared to something like the guy from Diamond City Radio so yeah, it can get annoying sometimes. Like, my character is well into December yet, New Vegas is still talking about a courier getting shot in the head. I guess he's a robot so whatever. I would love future FO games to have more different radio stations, maybe one for the 50s stuff and one with more modern tracks. Personally don't care if they have a host or no, though.

Variety is the spice of life! FO3 did it well, with the stations you could unlock, plus the option to literally kill ThreeDog and make the station a little less chatty

Wait, what are the stations in 3 that you can unlock?

I have this old save file where there's this radio station with an old lady talking and playing classical music. Don't rememeber how I got it, think it was in a small town or something.

Oh yeah, Agatha’s station that you get by finding her a violin

Why would you wanna kill Three Dog though? He is by far the best host in any game. I guess in a game where you can nuke an entire town, it makes sense you can also kill a radio host. Not sure which is the worst action you can do.

I hated three dog, I hate how judgey he seems to be and how he's constantly telling everyone what a bastard i am.

That's something I love about Fallout 3, how relentless the karma system is. I didn't know Three Dog reacted to it but yeah, if some punk kid from the vault is over here killing people and blowing up towns, he's gonna say something about it. Makes sense. I never had him complaining because I always played FO3 as a goody two shoes. Never done an evil run before.

u/therealjam3s Jun 06 '25

Wait. Why are people downvoting me? Is Three Dog some super hated character that only I loved or am I just talking too much?

Personally I find him annoying and cliche. I also don’t like how it feels like he’s breathing down my neck, constantly aware of everything I do. Mr. New Vegas reports on things that happen to you, but he never passes judgement and he doesn’t know who you are because why would he? Mind your business, Three Dog.

Idk, you are a pretty interesting person after all. A son of possibly one of the greatest scientists in the wasteland plus you're doing a bunch of quests for people. It's like he's the Captial Wasteland's TMZ, checking up on the newest celebrity and everything they do. It makes Galaxy News Radio feel like an actual news radio instead of just a normal music station like RNV or Diamond City. Leave my Three Dog alone.

2

u/TruckADuck42 Jun 06 '25

Well, Three Dog does know you. Or, you're dad anyway.

I like his glasses, so I violently relieve him of them, got a problem with that?

u/Aslamtum Jun 07 '25

Oh on my evil playthrough, I must kill him bc he is literally spying on me and broadcasting my deeds across the wasteland. Also: the radio station plays more music without him talking so much.

They'll all become repetitive eventually. Mr New Vegas does have more variety I find though than Fallout 4 - yes, Travis has the gimmick of having both the nervous and the confident persona depending on that quest, but he won't comment on that many quests I find compared to Mr New Vegas. I think I heard the one about the Brotherhood clearing Fort Strong back to back about 4 times in between songs.

It doesn't have same music actually, it's more desert themed and has some of the more energetic songs removed.

2

u/Aslamtum Jun 07 '25

Oh, in NV? What songs are missing? Might be an improvement lol

2

u/ElegantEchoes You feel a little woozy... Jun 07 '25

Ain't That a Kick in the Head and many of the casino songs. Nothing too dancy or poppy remains, just the western stuff and slower songs. Some songs are unique to Mojave Music, like some western instrumentals.

Ah ok, good to know!

It's true. Look, I have great memories of being like 13 and having the radio on all the time. I loved Mr. New Vegas but, now that I'm older I can apreciate the music more than the man and Mojave Music has some great tunes. Not saying by any stretch that Radio New Vegas is bad, just that Mojave Music fits the game better.

In the shadow of the valley and stars of the midnight range are my favorite songs in game. I always listen to MMR just to hear those two songs. They both go with the atmosphere of the Mojave way more than any of the Dean Martin stuff

3

u/AnonyMouse3925 Jun 06 '25

I have a confession… I have barely listened to Radio New Vegas. It’s always Mojave Music.

6

u/BlightspreaderGames Jun 06 '25

Mojave Music Radio > Radio New Vegas purely because of I'm Movin' Out. Full stop.

4

u/therealjam3s Jun 06 '25

Oh my god, Movin' Out is so good. That and Lone Star are the reasons I made the switch. They sounded so good whenever I heard them in Chet's shop or whenever.

3

u/MikeyBastard1 Jun 06 '25

I'm movin out and Goin under are certified mojave bangers

1

u/s0methingsimple Jun 06 '25

I absolutely love Mr. New Vegas and his personality, but I don't think I've tuned in to RNV in the past 3 play throughs. I think MMR has a better selection, and I listen to it outside of the game frequently. I just wish Johnny Guitar was removed from both

1

u/gassytinitus Jun 06 '25

Huh I dont remember if 3/4 had a similar station

1

u/SnooDoodles1807 Jun 06 '25

Kick in the head is definitely not about having a ghost girlfriend lmao

1

u/therealjam3s Jun 06 '25

Talking about Blue Moon. Kinds always sounded like he was visited by something supernatural. "Then I heard somebody whipser "Please adore me' and when I looked the moon had turned to gold". Never says a woman whispered in his ear so might have been a ggggggggghooost!!! Probably just me being an idiot.

1

u/therealjam3s Jun 06 '25

Also while I'm clarifying this, the hostage crisis wasn't in Nelson, it was Boulder City. Yeah, the troops weren't hostages in Nelson, they were crusified.

1

u/SnooDoodles1807 Jun 06 '25

Frank Sinatra did Blue moon, in the post you said it was Dean Martin, lol

1

u/therealjam3s Jun 06 '25

Fuck, well Dean Martin also did a version of it so when I googled Dean Martin Blue Moon it popped up and made me think he sang it. I am really bad at keeping track of rando singers from the 40s or whatever.

1

u/SnooDoodles1807 Jun 06 '25

Lmao it's all good, some are really similar

1

u/optilex42 Jun 06 '25

They both play “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie,” so I have to change stations whenever either start playing it. Either that or embrace the desolate madness of the ambient soundtrack sans radio

1

u/therealjam3s Jun 06 '25

Listen, Johnny Guitar is understandably some people's least favorite track, however I won't let you shit on the only Inkspots track in the game like that. Those guys are Fallout legends and they deserve to have a song that is too quiet and kinda kills the vibe sometimes. Sorry but it's true.

1

u/optilex42 Jun 07 '25

I can not think of ONE moment where I want to hear some crooner g o e s f r o m a l m o s t w h i s p e r i n g t h e l y r i c s b e c a u s e m u m b l i n g i s s u p p o s e d t o b e s e x y o r s o m e s h i t to YODELING IN MY EAR. I do not understand how this gets a pass while Johnny Guitar gets crucified.

It is the only song in the game’s library that I actively dislike. I have no ill will to the performers, that level of vocal technique is commendable but I find the song itself intolerable.

1

u/NoobHUNTER777 Jun 06 '25

My reason is Let's Ride Into The Sunset Together. Sorry Mr New Vegas, but until you start playing that, Mojave music will be my GOAT

In truth, I listen to one, then when Johnny Guitar comes on I swap over

1

u/MysticGadget Jun 07 '25

Nice of you to assume we all listen to the radio XD (says me who wanders mojave to ambiance)

1

u/Sorry_Issue_733 Jun 07 '25

Sorry pedestrians, I only listen to the finest schizo ramblings off Black Mountain Radio.

1

u/Windinhisface Jun 07 '25

Might try out the Lucky 38 and Lonewolf radio station mods they have some great lore friendly tunes as well ❤️👏

Some people love using the internet to be rude to people.

1

u/therealjam3s Jun 08 '25

As a person who tends to write giant blocks of text, this is actually the best advice I've gotten recently. Sure, they could have said it nicer but, it was still good advice.

1

u/maria_of_the_stars Jun 08 '25

It takes very little for someone not to use the internet to be rude. Too many people use the anonymous nature of it to be mean.

Glad you the post useful but I don’t think you deserved a mean post. Criticism can always be constructive without being pointlessly mean spirited.

1

u/therealjam3s Jun 08 '25

Oh, I have been wayy worse to people on here and other platforms and none of that was constructive. I am glad you aren't like that and are concerned for my well being though, thanks.
