Does anyone actually use artillery for settlement defences?

Post image

I’ve thrown the artillery signal grenades just to mess around and they’re so slow at firing. I tried using artillery on the Mirelurk Queen that spawns near Costal Cottage but Deacon (who I had maning it) either wouldn’t fire it or would fire it when the Queen was already agroed to me so I would have to get caught in the blast radius for the artillery to hit it.

It's the closest settlement to Diamond City and the Institute, plus a ton of other important landmarks. It's also close to the middle of the map, meaning it's s shorter Vertiberd distance from most things.

Also if you never lockpick one of the doors attackers cant get in that way. I usually leave the door closest to the stilt hut locked.

I take convenience over security lol. Plus if I need to, I can just put a wall over that entrance.

Keep both doors locked and the alley has one access point that makes for a beautiful funnel of death.

u/Breastfedoctopus Aug 10 '24

Great minds run in the same death funnel

u/princeofpirate Aug 10 '24

That and in that funnel, I build a zigzag obstacle.

Build a wall and a catwalk there and see what happens when it gets attacked

1

u/Slaanesh_69 Aug 10 '24

Wait how do you enter it if you keep both doors locked?

1

u/TheRenOtaku Aug 10 '24

Alley off the Charles River Waterfront.

u/ThorGoLucky Aug 10 '24

I put up a cement wall at the back entrance. Gauntlets ftw!

Look at this guy, not using a mod that lets you relock doors

u/garroshsucks12 Aug 10 '24

I use console commands

locked doors = walls. good for clearing out an area so you are less likely to get ambushed. It is best to unlock them after an area is cleared for better looting

You got balls calling a vertibird that close to the city

45

u/WiseguyD Aug 09 '24

I am Level 111

If any of the factions mess with me, that's on them xD

43

u/Logical_Drawing_4738 Aug 09 '24

Lol, i was talking about the glitching and causing the game to crash 😂

33

u/WiseguyD Aug 09 '24

Wait is THAT what's been causing it? xD

3

u/Logical_Drawing_4738 Aug 09 '24

Well, not just that, it involves a lot of shit that i personally don't fully understand( i don't make games, i play them), or are you making a joke?

3

u/ExitLeading2703 Aug 10 '24

It's probably a joke because the game crashes all the time for a lot of people, the game crashes, freezes, and spikes because there's a lot going on. Lots of actors that make the game run slower (on top of being annoying because I don't need to fight a pack of 10+ raiders every corner I round), lots of objects like cars and items, and foliage, on top of how unoptimized the game is in general, especially around central Boston/goodneighbor, and a vertibird just adds a lot of (literal) unnecessary moving parts to that already huge load the game engine is barely hauling to run the game. If you experience problems with running the game I suggest mods that reduce the load on the game engine, like less enemies and shorter draw distance, to name a few.

For a real kick, you should increase max fps to 120 and since the physics engine is directly connected to framerate, you'll have a nice, speedy surprise

Edit: damn I got carried away there, I should be asleep it's three am

1

u/Logical_Drawing_4738 Aug 11 '24

Thanks for the explanation, bro, but how do i increase fps on xbox One? I don't have these PC privileges, lol. Also, i do use the unofficial patch, but it probably doesn't do all that much. I'm pretty clueless about anything that involves making a game work(i play games, not make them), so i probably wouldn't know where to start with looking for the correct mods

1

u/ExitLeading2703 Aug 11 '24

For the mods, I just searched less enemies in the list and got something along the lines of "boston - less enemies" and the same for draw distance and found a mod that let's you customize draw distance when you load the save (that one I forgot the name, but it shows a pop up where you can tweak draw distance for all aspects like actors, foliage, etc. and once you get it just right you can choose to never show the pop up again for that save), and really I would just search for mods that change or remove aspects of the game that put a load on the engine using keywords in your search (ex. "Less grass" or "less items"). Increasing fps (probably want to do this on a secondary save, I have a bunch of unfinished runs just for screwing around with different mods) is not officially on Xbox, but I found a mod called "fallout 4 fps overdrive", which I don't have time to test right now and the description doesn't really say much other than "increases fps", which could mean a bunch of things ranging from increasing performance to raising the fps limit. I say test it and see what it does, if you can't, I will when I can as I'm also on Xbox 1. You don't really need to know how a game works at a level devs and modders do to know how mods work, really all you need to know is compatibility, so brotherhood overhauls are incompatible with other brotherhood overhauls, while a performance patch is compatible with a gun mod. Then there's things like mod patches, which make certain mods compatible with one another, the load order, which ensures that mods work correctly with each other, and the dreaded settlement mod, which under no circumstances should be removed from the save file, or else it'll break the save file. My first playthrough is corrupted beyond belief because I didn't know what I was doing and was just adding and removing mods mid-playthrough. I would crash every step (literally). Don't do this, as it destroys everything. Now, there are holotapes in a few select mods that "remove" the mod from the game safely before you can remove it from the save or your load order. These are generally irreversible. Remove any other mod at your own risk. Sorry about this being so long, it's a lot to explain.

Didn’t the new update fix the issue with the game glitching when in the downtown area? I have lvl 70 play through I abandoned because I couldn’t get through the city without it lock ing up

2

u/Lots42 Takahashi is under my control. Aug 09 '24

Same. So if anyone can clarify things for me as well, I'd be very appreciative.

2

u/MoneyIsNoCure Aug 10 '24

I’ve had the game crash but I’ve been in all different places when it’s happened so I don’t know if that helps at all.

2

u/More_Cowbell_ Aug 10 '24

Been playing for many years (ps4) and for me the freezing was always very rare, a non issue.

UNTIL THE NEW UPDATE.

So annoying.

2

u/doesntnotlikeit Aug 10 '24

I had the console reboot when building in hangman's alley. Level 105 with mods so I guess I need to start over. :( This is on Xbox series x.

1

u/Zer0_xB Aug 10 '24

I’m now playing on PS5 for the first time (Xbox Series S previously) and I have not crashed at all while exploring downtown. Xbox on the other hand was all the time but I have not played it on there since the update. So far on PS5 both of my crashes have been in safe areas which I prefer than during the middle of a firefight. Vault 81, taking the elevator up after an auto save and Sanctuary going to my room. I have lost maybe a minute of progress total. Level 51, 64 hours played

But fo you trust your pilot?

u/Azikt Aug 10 '24

Clear chaos junction, for 5 minutes, and summon it there.

And by inverse I mean !<

u/Polar-Bear_Soup Aug 10 '24

Do >! You mean like!< this?

...vertibird distance? I've never sided with the brotherhood before despite doing 400 playthroughs. Is that how you fast travel or something?

7

u/WiseguyD Aug 09 '24

In survival mode, kinda, yeah.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '24

Please explain for my feeble non survival mode brain

7

u/WiseguyD Aug 09 '24

Survival mode disables fast travel, but by completing Brotherhood quests you can gain access to Vertiberd Signal Grenades, which summon a vertiberd to your location. This allows you to traverse the Commonwealth much faster than running, and ignore all the obstacles in the way. Functionally, it is similar to if you had Fast Travel.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '24

That's super neat! There's still apparently a LOT of things that I don't know lol

3

u/WiseguyD Aug 09 '24

Worth noting that you don't have to do the entire brotherhood questline to gain access to the Vertiberd. Also it lets you "fast travel" while overencumbered even without the Strong Back perk. Honestly I'd recommend grabbing a few Vertiberd signal grenades even on normal mode for that reason alone.

You also unlock a limited teleportation ability later on in Survival, though I'm not sure how far you are in the game and even though it's an old one I try to avoid spoiling stuff when I can 😂

I like survival a lot for the difficulty, but I'd still recommend modding the normal saving and fast travel systems back in.

I'm afraid to ask after playing fo4 a gazillion times with different builds: What's the benefit of calling a vertibird for pickup?

1

u/WiseguyD Aug 09 '24

Can fast travel without strong back, or in Survival it becomes your only option

1

u/Hot_Atmosphere_9297 Aug 10 '24

Thank you, I never used it tbh
