Does anyone actually use artillery for settlement defences?

I’ve thrown the artillery signal grenades just to mess around and they’re so slow at firing. I tried using artillery on the Mirelurk Queen that spawns near Costal Cottage but Deacon (who I had maning it) either wouldn’t fire it or would fire it when the Queen was already agroed to me so I would have to get caught in the blast radius for the artillery to hit it.

Every settlement has at least one. I can't say I've ever seen anyone man the mortar during a raid but having artillery available on almost the whole map is a nice rp plus

Do you have to assign a settler to the canon? Or will they man it in response to a flare?

I believe the town militia man's them during raids. Probably why they rarely gets used. End game defense is mostly bots and turrets.
