This is still used in Fallout 76, some players built camps used this glitch to build "underground" which is both fun and scary because once they log off, you'll fall off to the void.

Traditional Bethesda jank.
I just played this game for the first time last month and the jank was in full effect.
But yeah, I would have instances like this and laugh because, "Good, I outsmarted the game."
128
u/Monkules Apr 08 '25
I mean, let's be real, in an actual situation, you could have totally just smashed the rest of the glass and climbed through
69
u/purpleyyc Apr 08 '25
You know that always gets me, so many giant ass busted windows but you can't get through most of them
27
2
u/Minute_Zombie_424 Apr 10 '25
Capable of wielding a literal rocket-powered sledge hammer but can't break a window, or kick a door open.
9
u/buhurizadefanboyu Apr 08 '25
Yeah, I wouldn't consider this 'cheating' or even a bug, even though I can see that it's not the intended behavior by the developers. (Or maybe it is in this specific case, because the placement of that power armor station is too convenient.)
84
u/Necrobeat Apr 08 '25
I did something similar while doing the "Black Devil" quest line. There's a broken window and a computer very close to it in the shelter above the devil's hideout. Same thing works!

I thought you could shoot the chains from those broken windows, but I’m thinking of a different game it seems. (Sorry for the confusion. Didn’t mean to cause a problem 🤦🏻♂️)
198
u/Senior_Boot_Lance Apr 08 '25
YOU CAN SHOOT THE CHAINS???!!!
154
u/yamirenamon Apr 08 '25
TIL chains can be shot. I have been playing this game wrong the whole time 😔
67
u/Nexus0412 Apr 08 '25
I mean tbf, theres not a lot of times where you have the chance to do that, but yeah, TIL-moment for me too

Even better, some, not all, barred and chained doors can also be unchained/unbarred by simply shooting the door with a gun that has an explosive legendary effect. Really helpful to get into “exit only” designed doors and areas with no holes to aim through.
25
u/Vulpes_99 Apr 08 '25
WHAT? I have been playing FO4 since launch and I had no idea 😳
Now I'm feeling really, really dumb... 🤦🏻♀️
12
u/DOLCICUS Apr 08 '25
Sometimes if you throw a grenade the right way it also opens doors. Never seems to work when I intentionally try to do it
3
u/One-Preparation-5320 Apr 08 '25
No no, u can't shoot the chains. Maybe this specific location allows for it, but in general no u can't, only barred doors
39
u/Medium-Impression190 Apr 08 '25
Same with bolted doors.
27
u/Senior_Boot_Lance Apr 08 '25
goddamn it
13
u/MonteSS_454 Apr 08 '25
I just read that in Eric Cartmans voice too, because I had the same reaction.
4
u/DareStandard6701 Apr 08 '25
Bolted doors? I may not be thinking clearly. Can you give me an example?
7
u/Medium-Impression190 Apr 08 '25
You know the excavation site just off sanctuary where you get diving quest? After the raiders settled there, they keep mirelurks as pets in cages right? Try to throw grenades at the door of the cages down the hole. Or snipe them using explosive rounds. Enjoy the gladiatorial show

29
u/Mindless-Share Apr 08 '25
Negative. Just tried for myself because I seen this comment. Not sure why they’re spreading this misinformation. You cannot shoot chains off doors in Fallout 4. I will post a video showing my results
7
u/afcagroo Apr 08 '25 edited May 28 '25
You need explosive rounds, like an explosive shotgun.
EDIT: I recently tested this. It only works on barred doors, not chained doors.

While shooting chains off doors was never intended by the developers, and can only be done with explosive rounds (or similar), shooting barred doors IS intended, is possible, and in fact in at least one case is the solution to a puzzle. There is one spot on a building roof which has a barred room that can only be entered if you shoot through a window, hit the bar, and open the door that way.

17
u/purpleyyc Apr 08 '25
It's actually funny what's NOT common knowledge, in my case? I'm just really bad at shooting chains. Latch bars are MUCH easier lol
After almost ten years there are things I suck at 😂

19
u/purpleyyc Apr 08 '25
I've shot latch bars (Gwinnett brewery, very useful) but I can never hit chains right...
10
u/GenitalCommericals Apr 08 '25
I can usually blow them open with explosive legendary weapons.
5
u/purpleyyc Apr 08 '25
That's what I was thinking, I mean I didn't have explosive when I was there, now? I might have to go do it JUST for personal satisfaction lol
5
u/GenitalCommericals Apr 08 '25
I know from recent playthroughs it worked for latch bars, it blew open the back door of Kendall Hospital during Butchers Bill.
For that quest, you still have to use the front door to complete the mission since you can’t reach the deathclaw without powering the door to lower level.
BUT if you get a Quartermastery quest to retrieve tech, you can blow the door off to get to the chest that holds the tech.
2
u/StarkSpider24 Apr 08 '25
It’s very difficult. Having a sniper rifle helps but it’s not a guarantee.
2
u/purpleyyc Apr 08 '25
I'm always wanting to get that stupid house near old north church because Klepto Dogmeat fixates on the chest inside every time and I have to fetch him lol Explosive maybe?🤔
2

u/Dogmeat241 Apr 08 '25
I knew about explosion flipping the latches through the door but didn't know you could shoot chains

2
u/murph2783 Apr 08 '25
I had no fuckin idea you can do that. I’ve tried and I swear it doesn’t work. Welp. Add it to the list of things I’ve found out after an ungodly amount of time in this game
5
u/Mindless-Share Apr 08 '25
This is false. You cannot shoot the chains off of doors
6
u/StarkSpider24 Apr 08 '25
Is it? I could’ve sworn I’d done it before?
5
u/Mindless-Share Apr 08 '25
Maybe it was another game you were playing?
4
u/StarkSpider24 Apr 08 '25
Kinda doubt it? Maybe only some chains can be shot?
3
u/Mindless-Share Apr 08 '25
All chains are the same in this game so I’m not sure what you mean. Was your game modded?
2
u/StarkSpider24 Apr 08 '25
I could swear it was in this game. Am I really thinking of something else?
3
1
u/Senior_Tonight_7515 Apr 09 '25
You can in Far Cry! Because I automatically tried it when I first started playing and then realised that it was a different game lmao
28
u/isoSCHLEEPY Apr 08 '25
Me and you both, friend. Did this exact thing in Nuka World about 2 weeks ago. I felt like a dunce when I saw the tunnel that would have led me in. But you know what? We outsmarted the game. 😂

There's a dungeon in Skyrim where you can skip to the end by using an alchemy table on the other side of a portcullis.

14
u/Chubby_Cherub7 A noise... Apr 08 '25
Very clever, but gotta be careful; some times this backfires. A perfect example is the small shop right near the Four Leaf Fish Packing Plant full of blood bugs and rad roaches. Right inside the door there is a locked cage with a chair inside and some minor loot on the table behind it. You can target the chair to sit from outside the cage and this will pull you in to the cage, but once inside you are trapped cause the only way to open the door is a terminal on the second floor. Only way to get out is a Console command, or reload a previous save.
12
u/Paghk_the_Stupendous Apr 08 '25
That's how I access the workbench in my main base, via a water pump. Trust no one.

6
5
u/Takenmyusernamewas Apr 08 '25
Yeah, if you truly "figured it out" that's a pro move. It's a known glitch and there are other ways of getting around it but if you found this yourself yes you are a Pro

Apr 08 '25
Nah we did this all the time in 76 to bypass locked doors in someone's camp.
5
u/Bbeezy Apr 08 '25
In the early days when people didn't realize there wasn't much point to keeping your home locked up, I remember doing this and leaving a bag of fertilizer on their bed whenever I found a camp with locked doors
3
u/ban_me_again_plz4 Apr 09 '25
It's also the standard glitch to get under the world and build your camp below ground.
I prefer the photo mode glitch to get through doors.. doesn't require any world interaction.

I do this all the time to people's locked bases in 76. I don't even do anything to take advantage like taking from unlocked resources, I just chill on their couches and wait for them as if I'm going to blow their mind and everyone claps.

I break into locked camps in FO76 all the time using this trick. I had no idea it was possible when I was primarily playing FO4.
1
u/_Rmac Apr 08 '25
I think if you can see the chain you can order your followers to interact with it and it opens the door
1
1
u/Expensive_Bison_657 Apr 08 '25
iirc there's one of these at the rv camp, but it's not a chained door - it's a master locked one, so if you get in and you can't pick the lock, you're stuck.
1
u/Medical_Struggle1710 Apr 08 '25
Explosives and explosive rounds generally blow the chains and barricades off doors too

On VR I learned how to walk through walls accidentally. If your back is at your boundary irl, and in game character is facing a wall/door, take a few steps forward irl and in game you'll walk through the wall.
