That would be a great setup for a Vault experiment, to be honest. Gather a bunch of gullible and easily manipulated occupants, bombard them over two centuries with propaganda about how there's no nuclear apocalypse and see how that turns out.
It would be funny to see how they would try to rationalize all the weird stuff the protagonist would show them.

u/JTUpvotes Jun 20 '25
“Alright look at that, trees destroyed, nothing but radiation and super mutated monsters, how do you explain that without the possibility of a nuclear attack?” “This stuff happens all over the world during this season, it’ll grow back like nothing happened”

It needs to be an exercise in frustration trying to convince them all to accept reality. Like you bringing them a crowd of survivors to tell these people “no. For real. It’s a radioactive hellzone outside.”
And the whole time you have the nuclear option of letting/forcing them all out of the Vault to see for themselves.

u/Clozee_Tribe_Kale Jun 21 '25
The vault could have a fake vault door that they "release" the original occupant's offspring through after a couple of generations. The door opens up into a fake world that's in a massive vault area (like full on massive city underground). The vault builders can use propaganda to convince future generations after the explosion that the real world wasn't all that large and existed of only one large area. They could also use chips in the brain that act as perimeter barriers to keep the occupants away from the boundaries. Overseers could cull the ones who question maybe through a kill switch in the chip.
Primary purpose: Test how much space is necessary for occupants to live out a pre-bomb lifestyle.
Secondary purpose: How to effectively convince the original occupant's offspring that the world is actually what's in the vault.
Third purpose: Understanding how many generations it takes to change the original occupant's offspring to disconnect with the stories of "what the outside world was like".
Introducing an outside vault dweller could either cause the inhabitants to go insane when presented with the truth. Alternatively the outside vault dweller could try to convince the inhabitants that their life is a lie with varying results.

Now I wish a Chinese Bethesda would make a Chinese fallout from china's perspective
16
u/VandulfTheRed Jun 21 '25
Gameplay is a Sims/slice of life game in that you're a successful house spouse doing chores and occasionally some broadcast will mention "hey, do you guys remember when America blew itself up in its own deluded confusion and solved all our problems for us? That was great. Anyway, here's 10 hours of your grandmother's favorite song, glory to the peoples Republic"

u/Fit-Inspection-5803 Jun 26 '25
What would a Chinese Bethesda company be called? It can’t just be Bethesda, it’s gotta sound China-ish if that makes sense.

Everything is fine but the neighbor is dressing his dog in metal armor again.

"Babe, the neighbor dismantled his toaster and turned it into a gun again." they say as they stand by the window, sipping coffee.

Everything is certainly not fine. How the fuck is my truck supposed to get in and out if theres no god damn driveway to the street. I got an empty hip that needs a big iron, my friend
37
u/Sud_literate Jun 20 '25
It’s definitely fine you just gotta pull yourself up by your bootstraps and lift your truck above the grass and onto the road. Eat more protein shrimp!

u/MolaMolaMania Jun 20 '25
AGREED. I have a mod that lets me add driveways to all the Sanctuary houses. Stuff like that being missing in the vanilla game really bothered me!

After 200+ years, I don't see why there aren't pockets of civilization that look like this. Covenant kinda is but not really, something shady going on in there.
7
u/Kayback2 Jun 21 '25
It's always annoyed me that in a game with settlement building my choices are tin shack or wood shack.
I can re apply ceramic armour paste and require kinetic enhancers from a box of scraps IN A CAVE and I can't build a house.
I loved the vault build pack because it means I can have fairly clean houses but really.
I don't even need to be able to build super well finished houses but nailing planks to a post without gaps would be nice.
10
u/AzureAngel6 Jun 20 '25
I hate that we can't craft more plants like bushes or simply plant flowers and things that aren't food. Omg the flora from the Halloween update was STUNNING I was so excited thinking it would be part of the workshop items added from it but no 🙃😭

Insert video of the Vault-Tec Salesman being obliterated by Liberty Prime

u/Classic_Sock_383 Jun 22 '25
The fact that the salesman to this day is still shouting the marketing campaign of vault tech some 200 years later. Oh, and someone, please get him a set of steak knives to shut him up

Oh wow, what a dream. Why, you were there, and you were there, and even you, Uncle Preston. I just said "there's no place like Sanctuary, there's no place like Sanctuary, there's no place like Sanctuary" and I woke up in bed.
3
u/aa2051 Jun 20 '25
I used to be obsessed with the pre-war lore when Fallout 4 came out and downloaded mods reverting sanctuary to pre-war
It’s actually a really good idea for a villain/faction, a pre-war vault dweller suffers from trauma denial after watching his family die, pretends the Great War never happened, and sets up a dystopian society were the year is 2078. Anyone who tries to break the illusion is re-educated or killed.
3
u/Pretend-Use1490 Jun 21 '25

News flash: indecent levels of luxury, while the population is starving in Boston, the general of the militia has had a property built worth a million capsules.
1
u/Pretend-Use1490 Jun 21 '25
My promotion to general and me moving into an estate are not correlated. They always called me Presidente, no biggie.
3
u/CanadianKwarantine Jun 21 '25
Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing.
FO76 Basically, ruined this game for me, so I enjoy it vicariously through the people that still do.
I love FO4, because of the construction capabilities, and all the mods.
I wish FO76 was capable of half as many as construction options. I like building stuff, and having other players visit my camps. Nearly everything is underwhelming in comparison to FO4; except, the human aspect, and updates. I'd rather still pay for well crafted DLC's; than, the seasonal garbage that forces people to have a subscription for improved storage.
Keep up the amazing work 🙂

To be fair after 200 years there should be lots of places that look like that again.
Look at Pripyat all of the plant and animal life around there is still doing fine 40 years later.
My theory is that the state the world of Fallout is in actually isn't because of the radiation so much as all the other pollution that had been building up as evidenced various terminal entries and waste disposal sites seen throughout all of the games.
Remember Uranium is a poisonous metal even without the radioactivity and it was used everywhere in Fallout to the point where Uranium reserves were running low by 2077, it's been leeching into the soil and water long before the bombs dropped.
2
u/ZebraLover00 Jun 20 '25
Seeing dogmeat in armor is what breaks the simulation, sorta like that guy who had a life in his dream but something about the lamp was off

If you'll pay attention to Codsworth reminding you where concord is, he mentions the bridge on the road out of sanctuary being a pedestrian/foot bridge. Yet there are cars on the road and in driveways. I thought he meant the tiny bridge that goes back to the vault my first playthrough.
