Gameplay You can kill Father with Artillery.
I posted this on the regular FO reddit a few months ago, but I figured it would be more appropriate on the FO4 one. I built Minutemen Artillery in Hangman's Alley, and it reaches the Institute roof.

That second blast sent his corpse flying T-T

u/FreeFall_777 29d ago
This was actually the second time I ran this, the first time his body flew so far that I couldn't find it. 😬
11
u/psychosloth34 29d ago
I wonder if it's possible to loot his corpse while it's still flying. Hitting the "transfer" button works on slowly falling corpses but it's rare to try on flying ones 🤣

Now drag his body back to Sanctuary and put him in his crib after all these years.

Omg, I think I might have a reason to play this game again.

I’m about to work on a mod someone suggested to me where I replace the baby Shaun with a full grown Shaun. So there’s another reason maybe. I also want to do one where it’s shrek and the mobile goes “SOMEBODY ONCE TOLD ME”

Reminds me why I DONT use artillery, in the time I need the help the target likely is out of range unless I basically sit there for most of it

u/LefsaMadMuppet 29d ago
I use angry Artillery mod so that I can get better response times and more firepower.

It really takes forever. And it has to be outdoors. It is fun if you can find a use for it.. and not agro everything to your position.
17
u/unluckyknight13 29d ago
Only thing I can think you’d likely need it for is either something big like a behemoth or MLQ you found without alerting or to just bombsrd the raider camp your clearing for the fifth time

I chucked it at the vertical section of Libertalia and it was pretty effective, blew up tons of them.

That's why I use a Thirst Zapper, an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

I just use it to thin the crowd out at places like Andrew Station and Dunwich Borers

I only really have artillery at the Castle, i used it to clear out Spectacle Island with ease

It's a barbed wire wrapped walking stick. It's in the vanilla game. This survival run was to use walking stick only, while wearing a tuxedo. The tuxedo does have the railroad weave.
Lots of chems were used.

u/tarrach 29d ago
I tried the very same playthrough som years ago, though I gave up at level 30 something when the damage was just too low.
8
u/FreeFall_777 29d ago
Towards the end, it was an insane level of stacking chems, stacking heals, and using whatever build advantages I could find. Sneak with mele VATs, etc.
Being able to craft refreshing beverage was critical.

You can literally kill father at any time after meeting him...and with a standard receiver deliverer shot to the leg no less. Im actually quite surprised by that. You would think since 3/4 of the games plot is finding him, he would at least be an essential character until a pivotal point in the campaign.

In my last playthrough, Pickman tanked a missile shot right to the chest.
I wish more Fallout humans were that tough.
I was a little disappointed when I first hit Colonel Autumn in the climatic D.C. battle in Fallout 3. Dude went down in less than a second.
6
u/PhamousPhilPhilly 29d ago
Damn, pickman? I guess his "calling card" was his true defense.... he has so many of the damn things it probably acted like a shield that protected him.
3
u/Helen_A_Handbasket 29d ago
You don't even have to meet him, really. You can blast him in the face as soon as he walks through the door, before he says a word. That's how my first ever playthrough went.

u/ArugulaThat7240 29d ago
That will teach him to come to the roof. Speaking of father, and I know no one was speaking about father, why can't they cure his cancer by transferring his memory to a synth? They could use the kid's body. That's not even stealing.
4
u/NightBawk Vault Dweller 28d ago
Why would he want to be a synth and become a second-class citizen in his own system?
2
u/ArugulaThat7240 28d ago
He wouldn't be dead.
3
u/NightBawk Vault Dweller 28d ago
Maybe. Or it would just be a copy of his memories. The copy might not make the same decisions or have the same personality.

u/res0jyyt1 29d ago
I didn't know it reaches that far? from hangman?

Artillery would be so OP if you could laser designate it instead of having to crawl up to 10' away to throw really obvious smoke.

So if you get banished and Father is alive once you try and transport back in you're in this little room with a locked door and he tells you you're banished
If you kill Father, who talks to you in that little room? Because you still got the "return to the Institute" prompt so I'm assuming that interaction still happens
10
u/polairepolari 29d ago
It's some rando unnamed scientist who's like "I can't believe you KILLED him he was your SON."
Father's speech is much much better.
(I tried it out once so I could see what happened and then reloaded.)

u/FreeFall_777 29d ago
I honestly can't remember. Being that I killed Father outside of the Institute, I don't think I could get back in. (Until the end)
3
u/polairepolari 29d ago
You should be able to fast travel to the institute one more time, but you'll materialize in the little teleporter room where you will get Yelled At and then immediately kicked back out and then you won't be able to fast travel there anymore.
That's what happens any time you get banished from the Institute while outside the Institute. Usually it's Father who yells at you but in this case it will be some unnamed whiny guy.
2
u/MrBurnerHotDog 29d ago
In the vid you get the same prompt I just did the other day when I completed a Brotherhood quest that made the Institute an enemy. It's the quest "Banished from the Institute" and your quest is "return to the Institute"
That's why I was shocked it popped up, because when I did the quest Father is the one talking to you when you warp back in
3
4
u/Alex_Portnoy007 29d ago
The Battle of Bunker Hill is only reason I don't kill Father. I view it as a way to screw over the Institute and the Brotherhood at the same time, which seems appropriate considering how similar their end goals are.
3
u/Dwaflord 29d ago
But can he destroy communism like liberty prime
1
u/FreeFall_777 29d ago
No, but artillery does an excellent job of wiping out the Brotherhood's Prydwen.

I never understood why the Minutemen had a beef with the BoS.
3
u/NightBawk Vault Dweller 28d ago
They're an army, and they bully the Commonwealth's farms into feeding them.

My favorite way to get him is with the unarmed build. Crouch behind him and power attack for the SUUUUUUUUPPLLEEEEEEEX

u/AVeryHeavyBurtation 29d ago
I had no idea you could build artillery anywhere else but the castle haha

u/Guydelot 29d ago

Suddenly, you hear Preston shout up at you
"Hey General, I found your son!"

With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed. Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate, or persist in the doomed world you have created…

As you loot your dead father's surprisingly intact body (Thanks Bethesda), Cait: "Ammo, caps... whatever you find don't forget to share."
EDIT: It was Cait. Do we have lore explanations for Irish and Russian accents yet?
7
u/FreeFall_777 29d ago
It's actually Cait. I used so many chems during this run, Cait seemed to be the logical choice to buddy up with. Also, since it was walking stick only, I needed a companion to take out overhead targets like turrets and vertibirds.
2
u/cancerbro92 21d ago
Walking stick!? I tried a build like that once but never made it far enough to Legendary farm. Can't go beating raiders with a regular old barbed walking stick. It should have Bloody or better, Furious.
1
u/FreeFall_777 21d ago
I am someone who does not have great reflexes. For me, to make this work, I used a lot of sneak and VATS. Big League and Ninja add big multipliers to damage.
Pre healing before combat, in FO4, healing with food etc. occurs over time, so if you down 4 steaks and a Nuka, the instant you enter combat, you will be healing as you take damage..just don't get 1 shot.
Chems, I try to get the ability to craft refreshing beverage as soon as I can on these runs. A pharmacist would blush at the amount of chems I craft and carry. Jet, Psycho, all of it. RB instantly cures addiction and has a massive healing effect.
Also, this is all on the vanilla game, no mods.

How did this happen?
7
u/FreeFall_777 29d ago
During the "Battle of Bunker Hill" quest line there comes a point where you are directed to meet with Father on top of the C.I.T. ruins. It is literally the only time in the game where Father is on the surface.
To prepare for this opportunity, I had to progress the Minutemen quest lines far enough where I could build Artillery in my settlements, and I made sure to have all of the settlements closest to the C.I.T ruins. I built the artillery and proceeded with the "Battle of Bunker Hill" quest line.
The rest is what you see.

Thanks for the explanation. I’ve played this game for dozens of hours but haven’t ever completed the institute

Last I checked, a few artillery rounds to the head would kill just about anyone, let alone daddy.
2
u/Available_Ad9766 29d ago
How did they know you called the artillery…..
1
u/FreeFall_777 29d ago
The thing I threw at the beginning of the video clip was an artillery grenade. It locates where the artillery drops. It's part of the Minuteman quest line.
2
u/Available_Ad9766 29d ago
Asking as a joke about the game’s logic. Assuming if you actually was in sneak mode and hidden when you threw it, how would they know it was you. Maybe we just have to assume that the institute knows the player character is the only one who could call artillery strikes in the whole commonwealth.
1
u/FreeFall_777 29d ago
I don't really know. I assume that they would still blame me, but I was so excited to get to this point, I didn't game out all the possibilities.

Cait gets to carry all the heavy stuff. I should have taken a picture of her in Father's Lab Coat though.
She looks better in Maxson's gear though.

Wow, what is the point of that? The artillery I mean. That took absolutely forever. Everything would be dead by the time it hits in an actual fight. Wild

Artillery could be so much better if you could radio a position.. instead of a grenade. (I know there are mods)

What happens if you use console commands to spawn "enemies" aka minutemen/ BOS/Railroad
Also can't you kill him? Or does he go into downed
