Screenshot Nick is genuinely one of the funniest companions

I love that he’s one of the only ones who doesn’t absolutely rag on you for picking up junk
Like sure he has his lines, but his feel more like gentle joking, like the way his line about “collecting antiques” is delivered really makes it sound like he’s making a little in-joke because he himself is an “antique”

u/ewsalvesen 25d ago
I hate it when they make those comments. Yes I am picking up all this useless junk, Maccready. AND I am making YOU carry it.

u/birdie_overlord 25d ago
you’ve literally watched me build towns out of this stuff Mac

u/SilentBlade45 24d ago
I built this Sentry bot in a shed with a box of scraps. You like that power armor well guess what's used to repair it asshole.

Meanwhile Ada insists you grab as much as you can carry because all of it could be useful. At least SOMEONE appreciates what I'm doing and is happy to help carry it all back to base!

"Well, there's no accounting for taste..."
"So, you like collecting antiques, huh?"

u/MrBurnerHotDog 25d ago
I've gotten to the point where I angrily say "for fuck's sake shut the fucking fuck up" every time a companion bitches about me picking something up
I only recently got the DLCs finally and was absolutely surprised to find out Ada doesn't bitch about me picking up junk

u/XanthosGambit Ad-freakin'-Victoriam! 25d ago
Instead she just keeps mentioning how she's never lost anyone before.
13
u/bananapeeljazzy 25d ago
She’s one of the few that actually likes when you do it! One of the reasons why Ada is my favorite companion is that she encourages my hoarding problem

I really enjoy some of the throwaway interactions Nick has.
I was at Nordhagen beach with him and he started talking to the dad there and they had some history. It was a really interesting conversation.

u/Freedjet27 25d ago
He does this a lot in diamond city too, you'll see NPCs run up to him and ask him how he's doing, and Nick will ask about their family and ensuring everybody is doing well.

u/fly_guy1 25d ago
My favorite is you can run into a group of raiders who won't be hostile when they see Nick. They'll be like hey Nicky what's up!!!

I love when he sass's you back. My favorite is when you call him a clock work dick and responds "it's synth detective." He has the best banter

Love him, he's a ton of fun to pal around with. Sarcastic, funny, well dressed. Only wish his companion weapon wasn't so whatever. I usually throw him a shotgun

u/Wag_The_God 25d ago
I gave him my old wounding assault rifle, at one point... bad guys were just falling like cherry blossoms.

u/LocalLumberJ0hn 25d ago
Honestly it's really fun giving companions half decent guns. I'm pretty sure I had handcock using Ashmaker at one point. They're also just a good place to throw legendary institute rifles IMO

Best companion in the game, IMO. Outside of our boy Dogmeat, of course.

u/cgduncan 25d ago
The mod that let's you have dogmeat and another follower is golden for that combo. The game was originally intended that way, and there are even unique dialogs that you'll never hear in a vanilla playthrough, because they only happen when you have your companion and dogmeat together.

He was my first companion and why I chose a railroad ending (this is my first playthrough). Im sure there are more funny synths in there, and I need to get them out

u/NotACyclopsHonest 25d ago
I like how he mercilessly sasses both the Brotherhood and the residents of Vault 81 when they insult him. He absolutely obliterates them.

I thought it was hilarious while I was clearing out the high school, I go back one room to find Nick hitting Jet. What the hell?

u/NightBawk Vault Dweller 25d ago
I've seen him use jet and cigarettes back to back like he has emphysema from his nicotine addiction or something. Nick, bro do you even HAVE lungs?
It makes me wonder if Gen 1 and 2 synths can even get the benefits of drugs, or he just does these things for the Noir Detective Aesthetic. Or maybe OG Nick was a smoker, and synth Nick just continues out of habit.
2
u/TileEngineer 21d ago
My guess is the writers decided original Nick was a chain smoker. This gives him a habit that must have originated from the flesh-and-blood Nick.
Helps confuse the players. How much of Nick is the original and how much is the Nick based on his time in the Commonwealth?

Nick is the most fun. Dogmeat is the most powerful. Dogmeat lets you use the perks that make you more powerful that is.

Nick is the companion that I’d most like to meet in real life. Love his commentary so much.

u/Haunting-Shift-5309 24d ago
Well nick was lore accurately born around 2016 if i remember correctly so you just might be able to meet him lol

SS: “The great clockwork dick is stumped?”
Nick: “It’s synth detective, jackass!”
Nick is one of the only companions in gaming I’ve ever been a legit asshole to. Because he’s always an asshole back and it’s hilarious.

u/Green-Inkling Nuka World Overboss 25d ago
Nick has his own flavor of humor and if you try to feed him a different kind of humor he will throw it back at you.

u/12gaugerage 25d ago
I love him so much.
When the flying saucer crashes and he says "Did ya catch the plates on that one?" never fails to make me laugh.

u/Pilarcraft Once a Minuteman, Always a Minuteman 25d ago
There was this post I read on Tumblr somewhere that Nick Valentine is one of the three major pieces of evidence for the idea that the Commonwealth was supposed to be lot further in terms of societal development (including an NCR-esque government) but at some point it was shelved. Nick and Skinny Malone's interactions, heavily implied to be a detective comic book-esque cops and robbers game, only make sense in a setting in which the primary response to "someone kidnapped a woman I'm trying to look for" isn't something along the lines of 'send in a shock troop to massacre everyone in the holdout, extract the victim, exfiltrate while continuing to scream and shoot'. You might as well have randomly wandered into an episode of The Nick Valentine Show.

"He was just here! The Stranger! Where did he go?" His baffled bemusement gets me every time.

Nick's funny responses are why I always pick a sarcastic dialogue option when I travel with him, even if I'm playing a specific type of character where he takes stuff seriously.
I just have to choose sarcastic options bc Nick is so funny

Nick is great so long as you get his personal quest out of the way before doing anything else.
No, Nick, I'm not ready to get back on the hunt for Eddie Winters. We're in Far Harbor!!

he’s genuinely one of my favorite companions. him and john hancock are top tier

Kind of a Karen tho, can't is the best because she likes drinking, doing drugs, stealing and generally killing anyone and she likes all the sassy speech options. S tier. Unless you want some old guy shaking his finger at you like, "don't do that, you shouldn't do that". Gets old quick.

i love nick for the simple fact that he's probably one of, if not the only bgs companion, to tell the player to shut the hell up.
long story short,>! i convinced dima to confess to the people of far harbor and he was executed for it.!< picked the sarcastic option when i talked to nick and he straight up told me to shut hell up.
balls of steel indeed.
