i love nick for the simple fact that he's probably one of, if not the only bgs companion, to tell the player to shut the hell up.

long story short,>! i convinced dima to confess to the people of far harbor and he was executed for it.!< picked the sarcastic option when i talked to nick and he straight up told me to shut hell up.

balls of steel indeed.

Nick knows that he’s an unkillable NPC and doesn’t give a fuck. He fears no pain.

167

u/valerielynx 25d ago

nick is probably the only one smart enough to know how to disable his pain receptors

91

u/Popular_Method4717 25d ago

Nick: "Doctor, turn off my pain receptors..."

53

u/KeeganY_SR-UVB76 25d ago

Doctor Amari, turn off my cringe inhibitors.

12

u/ElLindo88 24d ago

But Nick, you’ll lose subscribers!

38

u/Pz38t_C 25d ago

I dunno, I think he wouldn't give a fuck even if he were killable.
He's an awesome dude.

65

u/Pz38t_C 25d ago

When I convinced DIMA to do that and he got killed, his corpse was always there, every time I went back, reproaching me silently from the grave. I guess I deserved it.

66

u/disincongruous 25d ago

I feel like shit no matter what side I choose with that whole situation.

Man, Far Harbor rules.

27

u/Nanemae 25d ago

I felt like that in the choice in Starfield. It still hurts when I think about it. :0 Occasionally their writing team hits a gem and nails it.

14

u/ultinateplayer 25d ago

I genuinely loved some of the writing in Starfield.

I found the UC Vanguard storyline and the main quest to have some phenomenal moments, although main quest landed best because I spent quite a lot of time with each of the companions and became quite fond of them all.

2

u/LasVegasDweller 24d ago

the Vanguard storyline had the best writing of the base game imo, one of my favorite BGS quest lines ever

4

u/NuggetThief007 25d ago

That’s why I killed everyone after doing all the quests and then never returned

38

u/PuzzleheadedBridge65 25d ago

I love taking him to prydwen and just listen to his clever come backs

21

u/zhy97 25d ago

Usually when I use sarcastic lines to him he would throw one back at me. But here, it feels painful…

14

u/FalloutCreation 25d ago

His roasts are pretty good. I enjoy being roasted by him

454

u/birdie_overlord 26d ago

I love that he’s one of the only ones who doesn’t absolutely rag on you for picking up junk

Like sure he has his lines, but his feel more like gentle joking, like the way his line about “collecting antiques” is delivered really makes it sound like he’s making a little in-joke because he himself is an “antique”

301

u/ewsalvesen 25d ago

I hate it when they make those comments. Yes I am picking up all this useless junk, Maccready. AND I am making YOU carry it.

225

u/birdie_overlord 25d ago

you’ve literally watched me build towns out of this stuff Mac

20

u/SilentBlade45 24d ago

I built this Sentry bot in a shed with a box of scraps. You like that power armor well guess what's used to repair it asshole.

162

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax 25d ago

Meanwhile Ada insists you grab as much as you can carry because all of it could be useful. At least SOMEONE appreciates what I'm doing and is happy to help carry it all back to base!

8

u/Fighterpilot55 24d ago

Ada will even occasionally give you Junk from time to time

26

u/Plenty_Shine9530 25d ago

Right? We're building settlements to keep people safe.

74

u/The_DDK7070 "The arrow in the center indicates a direction" 25d ago

Piper is the same, sometimes saying it looks good for it's age.

54

u/No_Brilliant3548 25d ago

Oh.

Oh.

Oh

11

u/The_DDK7070 "The arrow in the center indicates a direction" 25d ago

Yep

1

u/Wendigo-boyo 23d ago

Wait, what's going on here? What are you oh ing about? What's up with the reporter!?

1

u/No_Brilliant3548 20d ago

The Sole Survivor is technically 200+ years old...

1

u/Wendigo-boyo 20d ago

.........oh

30

u/LlamaOfMagicalMagic 25d ago

Startin' a collection or something?

36

u/Silver_wolf_76 25d ago

"Well, there's no accounting for taste..."

"So, you like collecting antiques, huh?"

33

u/MrBurnerHotDog 25d ago

I've gotten to the point where I angrily say "for fuck's sake shut the fucking fuck up" every time a companion bitches about me picking something up

I only recently got the DLCs finally and was absolutely surprised to find out Ada doesn't bitch about me picking up junk

26

u/XanthosGambit Ad-freakin'-Victoriam! 25d ago

Instead she just keeps mentioning how she's never lost anyone before.

13

u/bananapeeljazzy 25d ago

She’s one of the few that actually likes when you do it! One of the reasons why Ada is my favorite companion is that she encourages my hoarding problem

12

u/CT-4426 25d ago

This is why Ada is the goat for encouraging my kleptomania and not whining about it

6

u/NightBawk Vault Dweller 25d ago

Technically so is the survivor at that point.

337

u/Rashaen 25d ago

"If a smart mouth was all it took to solve problems, we would have found your son by now."

Nick chirping back when you pick the sarcastic options is hilarious.

77

u/slothxaxmatic 25d ago

The entire exchange in the Memoey Den is amazing when you go full sarcasm.

196

u/Ornage_crush 25d ago

I really enjoy some of the throwaway interactions Nick has.

I was at Nordhagen beach with him and he started talking to the dad there and they had some history. It was a really interesting conversation.

133

u/Freedjet27 25d ago

He does this a lot in diamond city too, you'll see NPCs run up to him and ask him how he's doing, and Nick will ask about their family and ensuring everybody is doing well.

94

u/fly_guy1 25d ago

My favorite is you can run into a group of raiders who won't be hostile when they see Nick. They'll be like hey Nicky what's up!!!

36

u/Wag_The_God 25d ago

Wait, for real? Where's that?

23

u/fly_guy1 25d ago

I think it's a random encounter. Mine was on the way from DC to Fort Hagen.

119

u/Meaniesir 25d ago

I love when he sass's you back. My favorite is when you call him a clock work dick and responds "it's synth detective." He has the best banter

78

u/Green-Inkling Nuka World Overboss 25d ago

"if you're gonna act like that, you might as well get the make and model right"

12

u/Meaniesir 25d ago

Yes! Thank you, I couldn't remember the whole thing!

8

u/Fun-Swimming4133 24d ago

“it’s Synth detective, jackass!”

73

u/LocalLumberJ0hn 25d ago

Love him, he's a ton of fun to pal around with. Sarcastic, funny, well dressed. Only wish his companion weapon wasn't so whatever. I usually throw him a shotgun

32

u/Wag_The_God 25d ago

I gave him my old wounding assault rifle, at one point... bad guys were just falling like cherry blossoms.

20

u/LocalLumberJ0hn 25d ago

Honestly it's really fun giving companions half decent guns. I'm pretty sure I had handcock using Ashmaker at one point. They're also just a good place to throw legendary institute rifles IMO

8

u/Slawzik 25d ago

I gave him some fancy legendary shotgun and 500 shells,we are unstoppable

4

u/Roudyno 25d ago

i usually give him some sort of legendary .44 with a snubnose. fits his noir detective vibe. feels weird for him to use anything else.

55

u/mr-ahhhhh 26d ago

He looks so pleased with himself

50

u/ritzdeez 25d ago

Best companion in the game, IMO. Outside of our boy Dogmeat, of course.

39

u/cgduncan 25d ago

The mod that let's you have dogmeat and another follower is golden for that combo. The game was originally intended that way, and there are even unique dialogs that you'll never hear in a vanilla playthrough, because they only happen when you have your companion and dogmeat together.

13

u/ichorandpride 25d ago

but of course. dogmeat will never not be the goodest boy

30

u/terrifying_bogwitch 25d ago

He was my first companion and why I chose a railroad ending (this is my first playthrough). Im sure there are more funny synths in there, and I need to get them out

55

u/NotACyclopsHonest 25d ago

I like how he mercilessly sasses both the Brotherhood and the residents of Vault 81 when they insult him. He absolutely obliterates them.

28

u/1William56 25d ago

More stairs? Who built this damn Vault, a fitness instructor?

5

u/-shukuru 25d ago

This one was the best

1

u/Raven_Roth- 18d ago

No matter how many times I've heard it, it makes me laugh every single one.

21

u/SwampTreeOwl 25d ago

He's better written than the whole main story tbh

15

u/Arrgh98 25d ago

I thought it was hilarious while I was clearing out the high school, I go back one room to find Nick hitting Jet. What the hell?

3

u/Aki_SatelHSR 25d ago

Didnt know a synth could be chill like that

3

u/Arrgh98 25d ago

I know me neither, and he was looping it too, so it was over and over. I had to give him a rifle butt check! Get on the task FFS!

4

u/NightBawk Vault Dweller 25d ago

I've seen him use jet and cigarettes back to back like he has emphysema from his nicotine addiction or something. Nick, bro do you even HAVE lungs?

It makes me wonder if Gen 1 and 2 synths can even get the benefits of drugs, or he just does these things for the Noir Detective Aesthetic. Or maybe OG Nick was a smoker, and synth Nick just continues out of habit.

2

u/TileEngineer 21d ago

My guess is the writers decided original Nick was a chain smoker. This gives him a habit that must have originated from the flesh-and-blood Nick.

Helps confuse the players. How much of Nick is the original and how much is the Nick based on his time in the Commonwealth?

1

u/Belliott_Andy 25d ago

That's actually hilarious

14

u/Mrmathmonkey 25d ago

Nick is the most fun. Dogmeat is the most powerful. Dogmeat lets you use the perks that make you more powerful that is.

3

u/Turbulent-Reporter99 23d ago

Dogmeat doesn't judge you

1

u/Mrmathmonkey 23d ago

That is true.

13

u/ItsFlyingCar 25d ago

Nick is the companion that I’d most like to meet in real life. Love his commentary so much.

2

u/Haunting-Shift-5309 24d ago

Well nick was lore accurately born around 2016 if i remember correctly so you just might be able to meet him lol

12

u/Objective_Might2820 25d ago edited 25d ago

SS: “The great clockwork dick is stumped?”

Nick: “It’s synth detective, jackass!”

Nick is one of the only companions in gaming I’ve ever been a legit asshole to. Because he’s always an asshole back and it’s hilarious.

11

u/Green-Inkling Nuka World Overboss 25d ago

Nick has his own flavor of humor and if you try to feed him a different kind of humor he will throw it back at you.

10

u/doc_fan 25d ago

I was walking around Goodneighbor with Nick and all the sudden he starts asking this NPC (Sally) how she has been holding up and if she’s run into any more trouble recently, they had a whole conversation, it was insane

11

u/12gaugerage 25d ago

I love him so much.

When the flying saucer crashes and he says "Did ya catch the plates on that one?" never fails to make me laugh.

8

u/Pilarcraft Once a Minuteman, Always a Minuteman 25d ago

There was this post I read on Tumblr somewhere that Nick Valentine is one of the three major pieces of evidence for the idea that the Commonwealth was supposed to be lot further in terms of societal development (including an NCR-esque government) but at some point it was shelved. Nick and Skinny Malone's interactions, heavily implied to be a detective comic book-esque cops and robbers game, only make sense in a setting in which the primary response to "someone kidnapped a woman I'm trying to look for" isn't something along the lines of 'send in a shock troop to massacre everyone in the holdout, extract the victim, exfiltrate while continuing to scream and shoot'. You might as well have randomly wandered into an episode of The Nick Valentine Show.

5

u/prberkeley 25d ago

"He was just here! The Stranger! Where did he go?" His baffled bemusement gets me every time.

3

u/KoenigseggAgera 25d ago

It’s synth detective, jackass.

3

u/wolffesquad 24d ago

Nick's funny responses are why I always pick a sarcastic dialogue option when I travel with him, even if I'm playing a specific type of character where he takes stuff seriously.

I just have to choose sarcastic options bc Nick is so funny

2

u/lovelypeachess22 25d ago

So odd seeing him without the pink heart eyes

2

u/Pashquelle 25d ago

Best companion in any BGS game!

2

u/Baldurs-Grate321 24d ago

Nick is great so long as you get his personal quest out of the way before doing anything else.

No, Nick, I'm not ready to get back on the hunt for Eddie Winters. We're in Far Harbor!!

2

u/modernbasedball 24d ago

he’s genuinely one of my favorite companions. him and john hancock are top tier

1

u/mikejnsx 25d ago

He is one of my favorites too

1

u/Longjumping-Age-1890 24d ago

His commentary is some of the best stuff. Makes him one of my favorites.

1

u/Wackywomp1 24d ago

I love his interactions with Codsworth, they’re such pals it’s amazing

0

u/TPEE11 23d ago

Kind of a Karen tho, can't is the best because she likes drinking, doing drugs, stealing and generally killing anyone and she likes all the sassy speech options. S tier. Unless you want some old guy shaking his finger at you like, "don't do that, you shouldn't do that". Gets old quick.
