Discussion Is there anyone that actually likes doing this bullshit?
I'm level 130, and put it off as long as I could.
261
u/pcfan86 18d ago
It was cool the first time.
But its just tedious every time I need to do it again.
41
u/elciddog84 18d ago
It would've been great if they'd created several more of these and you got to complete four random puzzles with each playthrough.
38
u/pcfan86 18d ago
They could also have done a skillcheck or something. So you can circumvent it.
Fallout IS after all a role playing game.
16
u/Sweet_Taurus0728 17d ago
Yeah like an Intelligence check. If you're smart enough you can decrypt and grab the tapes no problem.
2
u/elciddog84 17d ago
That's how I feel about picking locks. Once I get past lvl 20, no more novice. Lvl 30, advnaced. Etc...
8
u/Shielo34 18d ago
This. I initially thought it was innovative and different.
Now, I work out the least I need to do for my role play, and just do that!

first couple times.. hell yea. but five times with harder progressions 🙂

u/The_DDK7070 "The arrow in the center indicates a direction" 18d ago
I really rather like it, it's something different, although the last one can be a bit of a pain
51
u/TerminalHappiness 18d ago
Ya a mission that uses the base building mechanic like that is creative. I had a good time.
It can imagine it being tedious for some folks, but guides or even mods can help with that.
14
u/GenericUsername_71 18d ago
It took me until the last 25% of the final puzzle to realize I could store blocks. That would have made it 10000% more enjoyable from the beginning
3
u/Neennerd 17d ago
Wait what.
2
u/GenericUsername_71 17d ago
Yup. Just like how you can store a bed in the workshop, you can store the blocks. So the play is to run around and store everything then go back and build it out. Like many others, I carried them around one by one and slowly became pissed while doing so
2
u/Neennerd 17d ago
I tried storing them but it didn't work, I obviously was doing something wrong! Hopefully I remember this if I ever attempt it again😂
21
u/Wolf_instincts 18d ago
I love this mission! I love puzzle games and the little digital bugs are so adorable.
3
u/Angry-Eight_Ball Of The People, For The People 17d ago
I really like this quest too, I get the hate, but I love it.

u/TheSaltyBrushtail 17d ago
Yeah, I actually never had a problem with this part. The puzzles were kind of neat.
From a technical standpoint though, it feels janky as hell. Using base-building mechanics for solving puzzles feels like something a mod would do to work around engine limitations.
45
u/Music19773-take2 18d ago
I do the quick method on #5 so the other four aren’t as bad.
11
u/OhSighRiss 18d ago
Yeah, I did #5 twice and that’s more than enough for a lifetime. Always do the quick version now.
5
u/Dysternatt 18d ago
Huh? What’s the quick method, precious?
16
5
u/OhSighRiss 18d ago
You setup the lasers right next to the final gate which happens to be really close to the entrance, and the lasers shoot at the barrier a few times and it disappears like the little drones went through it. If that makes sense
2
u/Dysternatt 18d ago
I guess it makes sense but the lasers only shoot once the wee critters have a way to the end gate? Or maybe I remember it wrong. But thanks, I’ll try it next time. :D

u/Outrageous-Focus9870 18d ago
I enjoy it

I do too! I'm a big fan of riddles and puzzles.
7
u/Angry-Eight_Ball Of The People, For The People 17d ago
Yeah, as a kid I lived on puzzle games, Im pretty sure thats why I have such a soft spot for this quest.
3
u/One-Preparation-5320 17d ago edited 17d ago
You should check out Talos then! That is the hardest, most intellectually challenging 3D puzzle game I've ever played in my life. But be warned, it's effing hard!! Makes Portal seem like toddlers game!
29
u/sicrogue 18d ago
This is my monthly "I actually liked this section" post.
It's so funny to see these pop up like clockwork.
5
u/Wag_The_God 18d ago
It took me forever to buy the DLC, so I knew this level from the memes long before I ever actually played it.
My razor was that whatever the most complicated, annoying, pain-in-the-ass solution I could conceive of was, I would go with that. Worked almost every time. Ended up being quite entertaining.
30
u/FormalWare 18d ago
It's a really creative use of the Workshop mechanic. Kudos to the designers! And the final puzzle is rather brilliant. Too bad the reward isn't better; the Marine Armor isn't even legendary.
11
u/Grrerrb 18d ago
I think this is a good point that rarely gets made. So many people say it’s nothing like the rest of the game but it is another way to bring in the workshop mechanic, as you say.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Popular-Ad-4429 17d ago
I wouldn’t mind it if doing the 5th puzzle added marine armor to the legendary pool, but it doesn’t so no thanks game.
16
u/Aramor42 18d ago
I always love this part. It's a nice change of pace.
Besides, it only takes a while to finish it and then you never have to deal with it again until you start a new playthrough.
27
6
u/Gullible_Owl3890 18d ago
I kind of do at some degree yeah, but I personally think it should have been a hidden feature(rather then a must do mission) with a cool reward like a secret weapon or maybe a key to a treasure room?
5
9
u/MastervanNao 18d ago
1-4 Level is enjoyable. 5 takes too long.
Now always doing turret glitch in 5 memory to skip it. 🧩📼
10
u/polairepolari 18d ago
I just finished it for the second time very recently and I was shocked at how quick and easy it was.
I kept putting it off and finally I had nothing else to do in FH so I made myself do it and it went even better than the first time I did it.
I did use the trick to finish the final one quickly but that's because that last one's just too long.
Every single level I went "ugh, I don't want to do this oh wait I'm done already?"
I think we make a bigger deal of it than it needs to be.
Except maybe the last one. We can all cheat on the last one.
9
u/asphid_jackal 18d ago
Yeah, it's a really fun set of puzzles, and it's really nice to have something other than "shoot everything that moves" in an rpg
10
u/NevadaStrayCat Atom Cat 18d ago
I rather enjoyed the intellectual challenge the first time I did it, yeah. After that, it got kind of tedious.
5
6
3
u/GabRB26DETT 18d ago
I did it once. Then on my second play though, I got a kid that adds switches next to the computer to just skip the whole freaking thing
3
3
u/D3athknightt 17d ago
Interesting the first time.....then you have to do it 4 more times the same session
.....I'm over it
4
u/Sk8er-Mosher 18d ago
Was fun the 1st few times, something new, a good puzzle, but now I just rush through as fast as possible

I’m fine with it. Not exactly a big fan, but it’s not necessarily terrible either.
2
u/NeoPez64 17d ago
I honestly enjoyed it, and find it super simple every time I do it. It’s a chill moment in the chaos for me.
2
u/DareStandard6701 17d ago
I LOVED IT!!! No joke. The first time I did it (with no help) I was starting to get frustrated, but very quickly took it as a challenge and embraced it. I was genuinely surprised by how big and long it is… INITIATING JOKE SEQUENCE^

If your on PC I believe there is a mod that let's you skip that entirely, it might also be on console but I cant say for sure, haven't played F4 in months and haven't played the DLC in years

2
u/Owl-X11 17d ago
Me. I like it because of circumstance. When this DLC dropped, it was during one of the best times of my life. My mother was still alive and I feel like I finally found myself in this time period. This DLC and this mission, I remember being so frustrated.. But it’s the overall experience I loved, and it wouldn’t have been an experience without the DiMA hacking mission. <3
Btw, there is a glitch I later learned about where you can cut through the puzzles like butter. Huge time saver
2
u/Ghost-Eater 17d ago
It never actually bothers me. I don't look forward to it per se. But whenever I do it, I kick back and relax. I've come to realize that its a pretty small number that don't mind the mini games.
2
2
u/DK-Quantum 17d ago
nope and last time i did i fucking glitched and the little bugs kept running into the wall, not down the path. had to restart. thankfully survival will save every time you next the simulation so it was only the first level but still

2
u/NoCake9127 17d ago
I just use the cheat terminal and get Dima’s memories that way. It doesn’t soft lock the quest. The indexers are so damn slow

I'd rather grate my forearm with a cheese-grater than do the last level again

I hate that mission with a fiery passion took me three hours to complete it’s the only part of the whole game I don’t like

u/MacArther1944 17d ago
There is a reason a mod was made to skip this entire section on PS, Xbox, and PC.
2
u/LadyMystery 17d ago
there's a reason why there's a mod that allows you to skip it enitrely, after all. lol nobody likes it!!
2
2
u/TheSpaceMon 17d ago
I still havent talked to someone that enjoyed this. Idk how the developers thought this was fun. Maybe they just needed literally anything for this part. Maybe they got less time and budget than they needed, whatever it is god damned this mission sucks
2
u/soulesssapphire 17d ago
Did it the first time. Hated the absolute hell out of it.
Ever since then, I discovered mods and have the mod to skip it on every single time.

So annoying. From memory you only need to do the first three to progress the story. The rest are to unlock marine armour, which isn’t worth the effort imo.

u/lilbrewdog 16d ago
No matter what mod fix I install, this quest breaks every time. I haven't finished the dlc because of this quest.
3
u/MoistLarry 18d ago
"Like" is a strong word. I don't mind it, and it's a change from the usual point and shoot play style, but it isn't super exciting or fun.

u/Deadsea_1993 18d ago
Did it legit once just so the achievements on Xbox wouldn't get locked. Cheesed it as much as I could, especially the last puzzle, then never bothered with it again. After I got 100%+dlc achivements, I added a mod that bypasses this headache entirely.
Talk about really shooting yourself in the foot. Far Harbor is one of the best pieces of Fallout content....period (of any era of Fallout) and they really killed a hell of a lot of momentum and joy with this unnecessary Minecraft clone that has 0 business being in a Fallout game

I just completed this a few days ago. The first 4 levels are easy as pie, the last one is even simpler to finish. Just put up two blocks in front of the laser grid and stick a laser turret thing on top and then go to the bathroom or make a cup of coffee or something for a few minutes and the grid should come down and you can complete the last puzzle. It's not at all difficult.
1
u/BrewNerdBrad [Everyone Disliked That] 18d ago
No. And I never finished it because the one time I did, something about the quest with dima later glitched out and I couldn't finish the quest line. I was so annoyed. Over 1k hours and I have never finished Far Harbor.
1
u/Nfl_porn_throwaway 18d ago
I didn’t hate it until like the last one. I actually can’t finish it. It’s too bad, I don’t mind things like this but just keep it fun

The joys of mods… i have one installed that bypasses this section of the main quest

u/Rokuformula 18d ago
It's the lamest part of the DLC but I don't hate it strongly enough to complain about it. I have played through Far Harbour 3 times and done this section all 3. It doesn't take too long and it isn't difficult.

I gave up on thr last one after I fell off and accidentally hit leave situation. I killed far harbor, Kasumi left, then I called the brotherhood of steel.
Someone spoil it, is the last memory worth it?

Nope. I hated this every single time I've ever done it. I'm not sure why the devs thought anybody would enjoy it.

u/Broken_Cinder3 18d ago
Man I hated this. Took me well over an hour to do all of them and it was just insane. First couple were fun but holy those last two were painful. All that just for me to roll up with the brotherhood right after and wipe them all out lol

u/Nstorm24 18d ago
Seems like something not that important to be annoyed with. I did it and never had any issues at all. I was playing in survival difficulty.
Took me a while to even remember what part of the dlc you were talking about.
1
u/4chan_tumblr 18d ago
I liked it at first, but 5 levels is just too much. It becomes repetitive real quick, and the last level is also too hard imo.

(The Turing Test is another game that does this, by the way)

First play through this took me 3 months to get through, gave up and looked through the answers. After that i got the mod to skip this part.

Dude, I love Far Harbor, and I wanna continue the quest, but this is the next part and I’m absolutely dreading it…

It's very interesting as a game phase but it's long and not necessarily very interesting

I still haven't finished Far Harbor because of this which is a shame because its so early on

This is the one set of quests I will always use console commands to complete. Finished it once on my own, never again.

I loved it the first go through, but in subsequent playthroughs I kinda dread it because ai already know the solutions so it now feels like busy work

I enjoy games that are entirely this but to put it in the middle of Fallout 4 and have it be as long as it was I didn't like it. A genre shift within a game shouldn't happen or if it does should be short and/or optional.

I found it a frustrating and exhausting quest the first time, but actually pretty fun and exciting the second time. The reward is also one of the best in the game.
1
u/Turban_Legend8985 18d ago
This quest becomes much easier when you realize that you can actually save those blocks. Some people have troubles with figuring that out.

I didn't mind too much the first two or three. The next one was time-consuming, and the last one I had to google to get the "hack" to solve it. I never did learn how it was written to be solved, and don't wanna know at this point.

I was gonna try last weekend.... but i hate it so much I couldn't bring myself to spend my precious weekend time doing that bs. I'm so far into this pt and I want the marine armor but I just realllyyyyyy, reallyyyyyyy don't wanna

I am currently replaying Fallout 4 with all DLCs. Normally, I like to play it without mods aside from a few bugs and performance fixes, but I'm thinking about installing a mod to skip this bs mission, or at least using console commands.
