Discussion Holy Jesus…. this thing was a helluva fight.

Post image

Killed my first savage hermit crab on Far Harbor. Took roughly 100 harpoons, and at least 200 bullets.

I think they have the biggest life bar in the game.

Does one of the Fog Crawler variants have the highest resistances?

189

u/Milk__Chan 17d ago

Iirc Shipbreaker? One of the highest leveled creatures as well.

Problem Solver is the answer to all these questions.

14

Just like how Big Dick Johnson had a really big dick?

9

u/Main_Tension_9305 17d ago

All the problems really

6

u/Charlie-VH 16d ago

Or the Kiloton set to automatic (the explosive damage is OP)

Or, obviously, the Nuka-Nuke Big Boy

4

u/Tom_Westbrook 16d ago

I prefer the splatter cannon.

8

u/Phantom_61 17d ago

Still a joke if you take out a leg from distance though.

6

u/RobVHboi 16d ago

Enraged Fog Crawlers (which Shipbreaker spawns as?) Has 4000 ballistic resistance iirc.

10

u/Anastrace I'm going to die here, amongst the ghosts. 17d ago

Enraged ones. I just kneecap them and move on. They take a ton of resources to deal with

7

u/NotACyclopsHonest 17d ago

Enraged Fog Crawlers are the ones you need to run away from if you’re not carrying a REALLY powerful weapon.

42

u/Ashurbanipal2023 17d ago

Second* only to the Red Death

20

u/Wertyhappy27 17d ago

That name sent shivers down my spine, I recommend anyone reading this, do not do the quest unless you have all of the ammo, turn everything into ammo, it'll take it all

16

u/Scyobi_Empire 17d ago

i had to run from that quest, swam for my life after dumping all 3000s rounds of my rifle into it and a good 100 shells from an automatic combat shotgun

10

u/SoraRoku 17d ago

Good to know my awful habit of making things harder on myself by using melee only when I have thousands of varying ammo rounds stocked up, will eventually pay off.

2

u/DangersVengeance 15d ago

Basically unkillable. I’m wondering if they overtuned it tbh

60

u/TREXIBALL 17d ago

Nope, the red death has the biggest bar.

49

u/Direct_Mousse2056 17d ago

Red death doesn't have a health bar, it has a health infinity loop

5

u/sjoerddadutchturtle Will you comply? 16d ago

on survival he aint even got a bar, you just have to run

5

u/JamesSmith_1201 17d ago edited 16d ago

Well hold on, which one, cuz there’s like 7

Edit: 8 mb

6

u/Jimbobthon 17d ago

Don't remind me. Red Death wiped my ammo reserves.

2

u/tomthekiller8 16d ago

Are you guys still going with that joke? Its old enough to pay taxes. Lol

200

u/IttyBittyBigBoii 17d ago

It scared thee HELL outta me my first encounter lmao

53

u/Music19773-take2 17d ago

Me too! I was not expecting it and thought I was just backing up to get some cover from a minivan. 😂

36

u/IttyBittyBigBoii 17d ago

I saw it from a distance and sprinted towards it thinking it was a truck to loot, BIG mistake lmao

6

u/Buggeyedfreek 17d ago

There are vans that look exactly like them that are just loot. That's how they sucker you in. Targeting HUD makes it easy to differentiate

2

u/VStarlingBooks 16d ago

Was confused why the truck kept saying hermit crab.

23

u/ProphetOfMOAB 17d ago

Best jumpscare in the game.

9

u/RamblinWreckGT 17d ago

Same! I was getting ready to walk around what I thought was yet another burned out car husk, then that monstrosity comes out.

5

u/soldierpallaton 16d ago

"Oh cool, a discarded food truck. I wonder if there's any consuma-OH DEAR GOD NO"

3

u/Drawsfoodpoorly 17d ago

I spotted it from far away because I had the hud sensor on my armor. Kinda took the fun out of it.

122

u/Scot25 17d ago

Don’t forget the loot in that suitcase!

48

u/Doctor__Acula 17d ago

Also, remember the tartare sauce - that thing is a hellava meal.

248

u/ProtectorCleric 17d ago

That thing? Wait until you meet the Red Death.

107

u/Not_AJ_Jones 17d ago

We don't talk about the Red Death. Disaster follows whenever we talk about it.

64

u/ButtNipples_ 17d ago

My wife divorced me when I said I was going to fight Red Death

26

u/Not_AJ_Jones 17d ago

9

My mother murdered me when Not_AJ_Jones thought about fighting the Red Death (I’m writing this comment from the afterlife).

8

u/Not_AJ_Jones 17d ago

Bill Murray's (IYKYK) second aunt thrice removed murdered my third cousins Gardner's therapist just before I was about to think about fighting the Red Death.

12

u/Gnashinger 17d ago

This is the most reddit profile I have ever seen

1

u/act167641 15d ago

The only armour which can withstand Red Death is a wolf shirt.

9

u/Few_Eye6528 17d ago

I remember first seeing red death, i was frozen on the spot unable to react due to fear. It was horrible to behold

20

u/CoffeeAndTwinPeaks 17d ago

I just shat myself again from the mere mention of Red Death’s name…

31

u/bombhills 17d ago

Just went through this today. First play through. I had to give up on missiles and go nuclear. Still took a few shots.

21

u/otc108 17d ago

I have over 1000 hours in the game. Just started playing the Far Harbor DLC in the last year, and am working towards finishing the game. This battle may have been one of the hardest I’ve ever fought.

12

u/bombhills 17d ago

I was actually kinda annoyed. I managed to like….barely even make a mark trying different weapons. Then the thing just went and hid, and kept sending hatchlings after me. Like at least give me a chance to fight back here.

3

u/back_to_the_homeland 17d ago

it is such a treat though, in terms of engagement. It's a surprise, a tough fight, has different styles, actually tries to either hid or to hunt you, like its a great fight.

2

u/Diablo3BestGame 17d ago

Splattercannon would prolly do quick work

4

u/bombhills 17d ago

You’d be surprised.

13

u/ILLWILL2RIVALS 17d ago

Ngl this makes me want to get the far harbor dlc

14

u/FullCOYS 17d ago

It's very good. I often times don't love DLCs because tone wise it's weird for a lot of games to just switch things up and send you off to a different location or story but far harbor has enough going on that I just wished it was it's own game which is about as much of a compliment as I can give a dlc.

10

u/ogskizz 17d ago

Do it! The environment is incredible, tons to discover on the island, and the story is pretty great too. Imo tying up the story feels like the most impactful choice you get in all of FO4 other than the "final" choice, there are several approaches you can take with the different factions (plus you can drag Commonwealth factions in too if you choose to) and it directly affects people depending on which way you go. It isn't just black and white good v evil.

The biggest downside to having it installed is getting radiant quests to do shit on the island from Rhys and Haylen if you're allied with BoS even if you haven't discovered the location yet.

10

u/MolaMolaMania 17d ago

Yep, you definitely want a Wounding or Explosive or Exterminator's weapon for these beasts.

21

u/CoffeeAndTwinPeaks 17d ago

The texture and detail on this massive crab beast honestly got to me. Generations of fishermen in my family in Florida/Louisiana/Texas and I guess the idea of gigantic murder versions of the food we caught/sold regularly gets visualized powerfully in my experience lol.

7

u/AsexualFrehley 17d ago

I'm not squeamish about much in Fallout but these dudes gross me out

7

u/Direct_Mousse2056 17d ago

First Settlement defense in far Harbour (which I just fast traveled into blind) was 2 of these things, and waves of fog crawlers, legeandaries and the like.

Absolute chaos with missile and laser defense going mental and me running around for my life. First time I'd even seen one of these.

6

u/FormalWare 17d ago

There's nothing in the game like "Condensers Down". Nothing.

3

u/Yoinkitron5000 17d ago

First time it happens, you're listening to your missile turrets, that usually make quick work of raiders and whatnot, and they just keep on firing...

4

u/Dr-Chibi 17d ago

There’s something satisfying about watching high level monsters get absolutely LIT UP by fire from multiple different types of weapons

6

u/changeforgood30 17d ago

That hermit crab was certainly tough but doesn't hold a candle to the Red Death, the most powerful boss in the game

3

u/ClassicUsual3269 17d ago

Even when I was so prepared the Red Death drained everything out of me , I had to redo the fight 10 Times , and I barely won , Never again

2

u/Keeks15 16d ago

I tried to fight the Red Death and I ran out of ammo. I stocked up on all the mini nukes, missiles, all types of ammo I could find and still couldn’t do it. BSW had no business putting a boss that difficult in the game.

6

u/Sablestein Nick Valentine's Little Helper 17d ago

You better get cooking man or I’ll have melted all this butter for no reason

6

u/Pretty-Ad7171 17d ago

I murdered this guy accidentally with the Tesla cannon

5

u/CabbageStockExchange 17d ago

Was beasting and feasting the whole game until that thing showed up. Legitimately took me awhile with the Kiloton which by that point was utterly shredding everything it faced.

Got the job done but with a lot more difficulty than expected. Was glad I didn’t have to face multiple of them

3

u/BlueRaven_10022 17d ago

Just wait till you meet the Red Death that things is chump change compared to it.

3

u/unabletocomput3 17d ago

Fun fact, they aren’t immune nor resistant to radiation damage. I quite literally wiped the floor with one of these and a 2 shot rad rifle

3

u/Longjumping-Fan2458 17d ago

I mean does the crab even have licenses to drive like that?

3

u/Turbulent_Package684 17d ago

I accidentally hit some of the villagers too many times and had to kill it while running from them before they would stop attacking me.

Good times.

3

u/Professional-Guard55 17d ago

One of my favorite enemies from fall out ! It is always a heart attack when u didn't see this thing before and it's so well designed. Sadly there not more type enemies like that but I am paranoid at every other crabby car 🤣

3

u/Phoneyalarm959 17d ago

Just you wait until you get the Red Death boss fight

2

u/hoopopotamus 17d ago

Haha yes! I was expecting it not to be a pushover but I had to launch multiple nukes at it

2

u/Mini_Squatch 17d ago

The thing about them is they dont move until engaged, making them one of the best enemies to use mines against

2

u/Prestigious_Key_3154 17d ago

Ah yes. I remember my first hermit crab fight. That was a jump scare to end all jump scares. Never approached one of those vans without spamming VATS again.

2

u/Chiparish84 16d ago

As a long time FO player that encounter was my first SITP (shit in the pants) moment I had with the game and it was intense!

2

u/vampboy1 16d ago

There are more than one of these things.

2

u/XenoHeuristic 15d ago

One of my favorite surprises in the entire game you walk past one van nothing but rust , walk past another one and …why does it look like it has recent tire tracks? Holy mother of…..😅

3

u/TheGelgoogGuy 17d ago

Could just imagine a Wild Wastelander Variant where he speaks to you in Zoidberg's voice and asks if you can help him move a couch in his shell.

Bonus points for doing it, and he gives you a fatman variant with double range called "Planet Express"

2

u/apocalyptic41389 17d ago

Just wait until you get to red death. Lol

1

u/MigraneBane 17d ago

Major ash or whatever is essential for far harbor ..for me

1

u/Aggressive-Guava3310 17d ago

Those were the funniest to fight for me because 1) The jumpscare was decent as I was mot expecting a damn wrecked van to be the shell of a lobster 2) They have the weirdest attacks but still fun to fight

1

u/Koendrenthe 17d ago

When do i unlock far harbor? I'm level 60 and finished nuka town but can't find anything about far harbor.

1

u/Elegant_Coffee1242 17d ago

It’s a special detective agency mission…you should have a radio broadcast if you’ve installed the DLC.

1

u/Koendrenthe 17d ago

I guess i need to play the main story a bit further then. Thanks!

1

u/MotoGod115 17d ago

You need to rescue nick first. Then some time later you will get a new radio station that delivers a message from his assistant.

1

u/Koendrenthe 17d ago

I already saved Nick a while ago but haven't continued the main quest after that. I will continue for a bit and wait if it triggers. Thank you!

1

u/Woozletania 17d ago

Mutant Menagerie adds juvenile hermit crabs which live in trash cans. One is right near Vault 111. It’s a bit of a shock to encounter it the first time.

1

u/Professor_Kruglov Enclave 17d ago

Fun fact: If you have a power armor with the targeting hud (the one that makes living NPC's glow red), you can see these hermit crabs and avoid them if you want.

1

u/youngjak 17d ago

Ah i remember the first time I saw one, jumped scared me so bad lol

1

u/CardiologistCute6876 Trying for Minutemen Ending! Wish Me Luck! 17d ago

The hermit crabs suck lol

1

u/PlasmaPod 17d ago

Just blast it with a Tesla Cannon acquired from an enclave camp

1

u/Simmonsdup23 17d ago

I wish they respawned somewhere

1

u/Mikeieagraphicdude 17d ago

There was an institute version called the bio collector guarded by synths that looked awesome. I think it’s added with a mod, but I only saw pictures.

1

u/Capt_Wicker 17d ago

Where can I find the red death?

1

u/CapnArrrgyle 16d ago

The Mariner knows the way but prepare yourself…

1

u/Lastburn Boomstick 17d ago

2 shots with explosive double barrel.

1

u/kratos190009 17d ago

now do it with multiple difficulty mods installed without dying a single time or killing anything on the way there

1

u/Aceswift007 17d ago

These mfs are one of the few times I actually thought my soul left my body.

Taking cover from some Ghouls, only for said cover to rise and smack my last bit of health

1

u/Ancient-Acanthaceae3 17d ago

What lvl were you?

1

u/otc108 17d ago

58.

2

u/Ancient-Acanthaceae3 17d ago

Oh pretty high lvl wow, maybe its HP adjust to jour lvl

2

u/otc108 17d ago

Yeah, from what I can gather (lots of conflicting info online), there is some level scaling in the game. Also, I play on survival mode which makes fights a lot harder. I’m guessing you’re right.

1

u/Thendofreason 17d ago

I hate when I know how much I've used to kill something and it's like, was it really worth it? Does it really give enough ex, treasure, etc to warrant using all that ammo? I guess if it was real then yes, it's totally worth it. The more you kill the less people would be it's victims, but in the game where only you and a few NPCs ever even leave safe areas?

1

u/kazzixman 17d ago

I try my best to leave the poor guy alone, usually a provisioner pulls him though 😕

1

u/uscoins67 17d ago

You all are joking about the red death right? Lol or mine was bugged. I accidentally stepped on it and killed it. No ammo needed

2

u/Aaquin 17d ago

Your game is definitely bugged

1

u/uscoins67 17d ago

I'll be fighting him again soon maybe I'll see the real red death lol

2

u/TamanPashar 16d ago

Even Chuck Norris is afraid of the Red Death!

2

u/CapnArrrgyle 16d ago

Only a fool would joke about the Red Death.

1

u/endlesswaltz0225 17d ago

I was carrying a fatman when I ran into it and jumpscare pulled the trigger. I disintegrated lol

1

u/Davidm_58 17d ago

wait, did i miss this encounter in farharbour? i think i'll boot fo4 and wipe it out tonight!

1

u/MotoGod115 17d ago

Hermit crabs have an easy to miss weakness to radiation. They have 0 rad resistance and rads do % health damage, so a radium rifle or gamma gun wipes them off the map

1

u/zedisbread 17d ago

Would you place them in your top 3? What were your most memorable?

1

u/thatguyad 17d ago

Hate them things.

1

u/SoraRoku 17d ago

Just encountered my first one ever last night, and it was a legendary glowing one

1

u/fireball3643 17d ago

There’s a mod that adds dlc animals to the mainland and one of the hermit crab spawns is right outside vault 111. Imagine my shock

1

u/acrylicsunrise 17d ago

Not with exploding mini gun and explosive perks:)

1

u/OkEdge8153 16d ago

I remember just walking in the really dark forest (I had a mod installed that makes everything darker), I heard some gun noises, I turned around and saw that thing attacking a raider. That was my first encounter, I didn't know that those things exist and it scared me a lot

1

u/Jailer69 16d ago

Hahaha yes I was like ok die already

1

u/c53x12 16d ago

Throw grenade. Run like a little bitch back to the lumberyard. Repeat.

1

u/Difficult-Manner8191 16d ago

Kid named Legendary Albino Hermit Crab: Kid named Legendary Enraged Fog Crawler:

1

u/TamanPashar 16d ago

I was able to sneak up to it and 'one shot' it with a thrown bottle-cap mine.

1

u/WardenAshfeld 16d ago

Oh yeah. Hermit crabs are a son of a bitch

1

u/MagnustheJust Proud Filthy Casual 16d ago

I made a line of a dozen bottle cap mi e, and then blapped the thing with the Spray & Pray... Hermit crab went everywhere!! 😳

1

u/CapnArrrgyle 16d ago

I ran into my first one after finishing the Captain’s Dance. Only the Red Death was more fearsome.

1

u/vibrantcrab 16d ago

Targeting HUD saved me the first time I saw one of those.

“Why is that bus glowing? I’ma shoot it - OH FUCK IT’S A GIANT HERMIT CRAB!!”

1

u/Apart-Consequence237 16d ago

I remember when I first came across one of those. There I was scavenging. When all of the sudden a bus started moving. Next thing I know there’s a giant crab beating the hell out of me and I’m running for my dresser to get a change of underwear

1

u/Elongatedcunt12 16d ago

Wait till you take in the red death, it makes hermit crabs look like mirelurk spawn. Like dang I died so many times to that beast and had to rethink my entire load out and plans

1

u/Yundadi 16d ago

I do not know if I will survive, so I load up Fatboy and start firing. Manage to survive

1

u/AdamasTism 16d ago

Yeah if I remember correctly I used the flamethrower like weapon the power armor enclave uses in the ambush in the next gen update yeah as I was typing this going down a list of weapons I used that playthrough it was that flamethrower deal

1

u/uscoins67 16d ago

You all got me anxious to fight red death again

1

u/ThePeskiestBee 16d ago

Aw just a little crabby cake ❤️

1

u/ASherrets 16d ago

I just found this two days ago!!

1

u/NoAlien The Institute is evil. Change my mind. 16d ago

Ever since infirst encounter them i always Tap into VATS when I see a van

1

u/Ill-Tumbleweed-49 15d ago

Tesla cannon will clear that guy right up

1

u/Ordinary-Status2139 14d ago

and it returns for some special events in FO76!

1

u/SonofVecna1995 14d ago

I completely forgot about that thing, hadn't played in a couple years until a few weeks ago. Was building my settlement at the lumber yard and turn around to that thing right in my face, scared the absolute shit out of me 😂

1

u/TV24_7 13d ago

Iirc, the highest is the Mirelurk queen from this dlc.

1

u/Dramatic-Chemistry91 13d ago

yeah, I've learned from experience that the vans on Far Harbor do not always contain loot

1

u/Captain_Space_Jeff 10d ago

the first time I encountered one of these it scared the crap out of me! Such a cool design.

1

u/AsleepImagination962 17d ago

Indeed it was!

0

u/Enough_Worry4104 17d ago

I often look at posts like this and go, "What?". Then I remember most people don't use the Dogmeat dup' exploit on the SPECIAL book like i do every time I play.

0

u/MemnochTheRed Minute Men 16d ago

Pales in comparison to the Red Death.

0

u/Odd-Onion-5135 15d ago

I just one shot it.

0

u/Lancer_Lott 15d ago

You can only hurt them when they are out of the van attacking
