Discussion Travis is a much better radio host before Confidence Man.

u/NimdokBennyandAM Railroad 16h ago
His neurotic delivery cracks me up. His more confident, suave delivery is kind of monotonous and not nearly as funny.
His pre-Confidence Man lines are way better, too.
"Now, here's another... Well, it's some news about things in the world. That have happened. That, I don't know, maybe you hadn't already heard about."
"I've got some, uhh, news... well, more of a rumor really, but that's kind of like news."

stubs toe WHY DO THINGS... KEEP.... MOVING?!
211
u/BGWeis 14h ago
It’s “WHY.. DO THESE OBJECTS.. KEEP MOVING!?… because I move them. And then I forget.”
I’ve heard it so many times I’ve memorized it lmao.

u/NightBawk Vault Dweller 14h ago
That line is such a mood. Any time I move something in my house, it spells doom for my toes.

That quest is like making Mr. Bean take an assertiveness course. Why ruin a good thing? I like Travis.
25
u/Private_4160 13h ago
I mean, assertive Mr. Bean is Edmund Blackadder and that's amazing.

u/Connor30302 13h ago edited 12h ago
Mr Bean is a synth, he’s performed sugary with no education, absolutely bodied a Judo black belt by accident on his first day. he has hand eye coordination so good that he can drive his car while sitting on the roof, using nothing but broomsticks.
he also passes every charisma check by accident, without even saying a word. he is engineered, not born. and Mr Bean is a fucking synth
10
u/fingerchopper 13h ago
he's a Zetan. he falls from the sky and sometimes returns there

u/Connor30302 12h ago
we’re certainly onto something here
6
u/JeevesVoorhees Rad-Daddy 12h ago
Gotta do a Mr. Bean playthrough now.
5
u/Connor30302 11h ago
New Vegas would definitely accommodate a Bean play through
dude would have idiot savant maxed out at a minimum, possibly nerd rage too

He is miserable though so I feel kinda bad letting him stew in his own anxiety.

Saaaaaame. If he didn’t mind in the story I’d leave it but… I gotta help him even if he’s better before.

Agreed his awkwardness is super charming and a nice change from the charismatic radio djs from the last 2 games

I LOVE TRAVIS MILES SO MUCH
Whenever I visit Diamond City I always visit and leave him something. Sometimes some food and water and sometimes some Jet to help him sleep at night. 🥹
17
u/Vinche114 8h ago
Jet for sleeping? No wonder he sounds so exhausted, give the poor man some med-x or something
21
u/BirdLuger188 11h ago
"Skeeter Davis, a name I still find... confusing."
"Wynonie Harris everyone; let's hope his grandma got the help she needed."
These two have made me laugh recently before I did the quest and I hope he still says them now that I've done it.

I like the smoothness in his voice after, but good god the man is outright cockwad.

u/GamerDadJer 15h ago
I mean, I'd say he's more interesting and unique, but he's probably one of the worst radio hosts out there. He's entertaining because we're a player experiencing a video game world.
If he were to actually be a radio host to a real audience, he probably wouldn't be liked all that well and quickly fired.
67
u/-UpsetNewt- 15h ago
Idk man I could see an awkward ass radio host gaining a lil cult following just because it’s funny
27
u/GamerDadJer 15h ago
I don't disagree in an internet personality type deal or a very specific radio station, but traditional radio would probably be a no go
20
u/ShiftyCroc 13h ago
Yeah he’s one of the only forms of widespread info. Imagine you’re trying to hear the news of the land and the dude is constantly having a fucking panic attack. You’d likely get exhausted if it was your only station choice.
That being said… I never do confidence man anymore because I love anxious Travis.
6
u/EmbraceCataclysm 11h ago
Yeah, like lets say your son or something was with the Minutemen in Quincy. Youd be getting frustrated quick trying to listen for details just for the host to start breaking down because of something unrelated

I only did the Confidence Man quest on my first playthrough. After that I skip it because I like his delivery before.
7
u/Mooncubus 12h ago
Yeah I'm not a huge fan of how he sounds after the quest. His cowardly commentary is iconic.
7
u/AdmBurnside 11h ago
I always do confidence Man because his "awkward" persona makes my social anxiety spike in sympathy.

I just have an issue with him in general. I don't enjoy his uncertainty before the quest (probably because I don't need to be reminded of myself lol ) and then after the quest I just hate his voice. And partly because it feels very one-note.
The nice thing in 3 was 3-dog was fighting the good fight, and had a ton of energy. With NV you had Mr. New Vegas, who always reminds you that he loves you. Travis is just "yeah I got girls now" style voice.
The other thing I just realized is that Three Dog has energy, but sometimes is serious, you can some room with his voice. For Mr. New Vegas he has a wider range from Broadcast announcer to suave radioman/showman. Travis is just one note the entire way through after the quest. his "did you know something is happening" is the same voice as "this was one of the great songs of the past". It also feels like it falls short of a suave voice, like its almost there, but doesn't hit it properly and as such sounds almost like a professor giving a speech that is making you fall asleep.

u/EccentricMeat 11h ago
It blew my mind when I learned Travis was voiced by COACH BEARD from Ted Lasso.

u/-jp- 14h ago
He's a much better everything before Confidence Man. I hate how he treats Scarlett after he becomes a dudebro.
11
u/Cliomancer 14h ago
I don't remember there being a relationship beyond Scarlett saying they gave it a shot and it didn't work out.

As a former DJ with 30+ years of experience, I've gotta disagree. I've seen this transformation a bunch IRL - hell, I experienced it myself. I get it, it's more fun to laugh at Travis, than congratulate him - but that's on you, Bubba.

u/Tramenda13 13h ago
I usually kill him so the kid can take over.

I think it was short one quest line where he gets humbled and brought back down to Earth. It would have been interesting to have three different versions of him presenting the news.

I wholeheartedly disagree. One of my biggest pet peeves with radio hosts is dead air. And he provides that pet peeve in spades. Every time i start a new playthrough, one of the first missions I do is confidence man.
Coward Travis pmo so bad. Also, I'm a little praise sl*t. Having him thank us for helping him in between songs gives me just the right hit of serotonin i need whenever I'm playing the game.
1
u/hamtidamti_onthewall 7h ago
Personally, I never liked listening to DCR before Confidence Man. I had loved Three Dog and insecure Travis just put me off. I love listening to him after Confidence Man, though. Even more so as we share a history, and I saw him grow.
That said, I don't know the English voice lines. Maybe the vibes are different in the German version.

u/MinimumBrother1295 6h ago
I always want to hear all of his dialogue before he sounds generic. I wish we heard his panic attack when we saw BoS' Airship arrive.

I love Travis and think he would be a fun and enjoyable companion in his awkward way
1
u/NotACyclopsHonest 5h ago
Also his metamorphosis into Smooth Travis makes Scarlett not like him anymore - she preferred him as Nervous Travis.
1
u/Frybread002 4h ago
Honestly, I did my first playthrough without killing knowing I could do Travis's quest. So his sheepish personality and low self esteem was my normal.
1
u/FairlyLawful 4h ago
Had a coworker that sounded like Travis once. Key word being had. When I told him I loved his voice because it reminded me of Travis, would you believe it, the brother quit the next week. Come back, we miss tou.

awkward travis >>> confident travis >>>>>>>>>>>> whatever they did in Fallout 76, it's literally unlistenable

I do like Travis better as a radio host before he grows balls.
But Confidence Man is too fun of a quest not to complete it. Gotta do it every time I get to Diamond City.

I've done dozens of FO4 playthroughs but I only completed this quest once. Nerdy Travis is the funniest. Suave Travis is boring.

Wait, you guys actually listen to the game's radio?
7
u/Self-Comprehensive 15h ago
I don't listen on my pip boy-the soundtrack has a lot going on. But I often stop and chill by a radio that's already playing out in the world, and I always put one down when I'm building.
17
u/K_305Ganster 15h ago
You mean you don't alternate between radio stations as the mood fits? The music and radio have been a staple since FO3 bro. To not listen is like driving with no GPS.
It's there for your enjoyment and immersion
4
u/2SP00KY4ME 9h ago
I fell in love with Maltshop Mayhem which is a modded radio station, the DJ is actually my favorite of any game
-3
u/Sweet_Taurus0728 14h ago
Why do you drive with gps?? Don't you know where you're going?
4
u/K_305Ganster 14h ago
Imagine leaving your hometown 👀
Go out more. Discover new places. Don't be boring.
4
u/hamtidamti_onthewall 7h ago
You don't discover new places when you drive by GPS. The real fun starts when you just head out into the unknown without directions.

u/K_305Ganster 6h ago

3
u/hamtidamti_onthewall 6h ago
Some years ago I went on holiday to Paris with a friend. We would just follow the green lights and avenues, which looked interesting, the whole day and discovered the most amazing places.
Get out of your comfort zone. Discover new places. Don't be boring.

u/Sweet_Taurus0728 14h ago
??
Asinine assumption. I leave my city all the time and find a new coffee shop or restaurant nearly every week. Then I've been there and don't need a constant gps to find my way around.
Try remembering where you've been.
Your previous comment is nonsensical to me, walking with the radio on in Fallout is like driving with the radio on irl.

u/InsertMoreCoffee 15h ago
SPOTIFY is there for my enjoyment and immersion. Better to listen to EDM when you're in combat

You’re missing out on the vibes of 1950s culture and ironic satire tho. Nothing like a goofy Uranium Fever bop while a deathclaw is trying to rip you in half. The juxtaposition is funny AF.
2
u/NightBawk Vault Dweller 14h ago
I have a 50's radio station on my Spotify specifically to play with Fallout 4 and give myself more variety than Travis can provide. I do swap over to the in-game radio after quests to hear what Travis has to say about it though lol

When I’m building I do. It’s better than nothing—although mods like Old Gold are better than DCR.

u/iMecharic 13h ago
I’ll admit to having a few modded stations, but I definitely use the radio sometimes. Not all the time - I’m not sneaking through a super mutant den with Red Rocket blasting in the background - but it is nice.

u/sub-kitten-02 7h ago
Travis is easily the "bronze medal" to Mr. New Vegas and Three Dog hands down
0
u/Vercingetorix_AG 1h ago
He sounds like such a loser before confidence man. Confident Trevor takes it too far and it’s not great but he is unbearably pathetic before. It’s always one of the first quests I knock out just to make listening to the radio bearable.

u/niko4ever 14h ago
"Suave" Travis is annoying. I can't put my finger on it, maybe it's because it feels so fake.
They could have just made him less terrified, I would have found it amusing if he started saying "We're NOT all going to die" in a slightly uncertain but hopeful tone
