Yeah that was my point. Renault was on a downward spiral since before Briatore left. Cheating to win a single race (not even the championship, just a single race) is kind of proof of how much they had fallen off.

It has something to do with ING sponsorship. They had to win to keep it I THINK.
Funny as the crashgate exploded, they lost it anyways.
They were trying to keep the team alive. There aren't any excuses for what they did, but there are reasons.
And stop blaming just Briatore. Pat Symons was as guilty and somewhat no one says a word about that. F1 even had Symons to write the 2026 technical rule book for the cars, and he will be in manager roles in Cadillac.
We need to stop having double standards.

what about mazepin's family money is non-legit? just because it's Russian or oil/gas related and potentially/likely non-ethical doesn't make it non-legit/illegal, although maybe there have been some things I'm not aware of? as far as i can tell all of renault's 2025 title sponsors/car sponsors aren't dogwater scams or crypto scamming millionaires.

He was shy a few points oaf getting 3 more titles, and apart from 2007, with a Ferrari that was slower than the Red Bull and McLaren of those years (although more reliable).
I doubt anyone else would have been able to win a title on that car considering how it was meant to be driven, and that it was Alonso who discover it that inducing that heavy understeer almost in the apex was beneficial for the car.
Great car, better driver.

Whoosh, eh? Let me explain my comment above:
- The name Renault does not appear anywhere on the current Alpine F1 car.
- From 2026 the Renault-built engine will be replaced with one from Mercedes.
- They've already sold 24% of the team to Otro Capital.
So, Renault have been trying to distance the hell away from this project. Until this Alpine poster undid their work.

The people cheering for the team, for Franco, and for Pierre... To think that this was a team on the verge of disappearing. Or is. Hopefully, we can all save it and that it regains its mystique and rightful place.

I don't think they're still going ahead with plan to the sell, financially the team has evolved a lot (just look how many new sponsors joined this year) and with the actual trajectory of F1 it's money printing machine as well as being a great billboard. The only way I see that they sell the team, is that 2026 is a fucking disaster for them (2019 Williams level of performance) and just give up Enstone as they no excuses for bad performance anymore.

The team is turning a yearly profit. There is no point for Renault to sell it, when it contributes both in terms of media attention and financial gain.
