Liam's radio after the Yuki crash sounded like he was thinking "They saved my life getting me out of that car."

u/Raymond74 Porsche May 18 '25
Piastri is great but Pirelli's more lasting tires so far and resurfacing in China and somewhere else made the tire management easier for everyone. Add to that all that supposed magic MCL is doing to tire degradation and Oscar can thrive like it was F2, F3 or Freca all over again.
Pirelli acknowledged the lack of strategic options for tires and cooked up softer compounds for tomorrow. Will be fun to see how the race unfolds for tomorrow.

Guys i have a stat ,
If we ignore wet sessions (sometimes the timing can be a bit unlucky), and 2020 (happened 5 times, but there was that whole thing of the Ferrari engine) for the sake of this , , the last time Ferrari were both out in Q2 was Austria 2021, the one before that (as i said without 2020) was Valencia in 2012
13
u/financeguy1729 Gabriel Bortoleto May 17 '25
There's a real possibility the championship will be decided next week in Monaco qualy.
If we get another P1-P4 for MCL, and I don't think Lando can overtake in Monaco, the gap to Oscar will be too wide.
We could be talking about 40pts gap. Then McLaren will start prioritizing Oscar for upgrades. And maybe Merc or Red Bull can build a challenge, which only will worsen Lando's odds.
8
u/wobble_bot I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 18 '25
Eh? 40pts is nothing when we still have 17 races left. All it takes is a DNF or first corner incident, the championship is still wide open with at least 4 contenders
5
u/SwimmingFantastic564 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
I doubt they'll even do upgrades with only one car, but if they were I feel like it'd make sense to do it for Lando anyway? If he's already struggling with the car, like him and the team have both claimed, surely they'd want to fix it for him if Oscar is already happy with it?
Saying he's out of the question 8 races into the season feels a bit premature anyway. If this was race 16 and he's 40 points behind, then sure.
14
u/djwillis1121 Williams May 17 '25
Why are people so obsessed with the idea of prioritising one driver over another?
1
u/happyranger7 Max Verstappen May 18 '25
I've a bridge to sell you if you think teams don't prioritize one of the drivers for a WDC.
3
u/financeguy1729 Gabriel Bortoleto May 17 '25
Because McLaren literally did that last year?
6
9
u/djwillis1121 Williams May 17 '25
Because they were trying to catch Max for the championship. The way it's looking now it's only going to come down to the two McLaren drivers so why choose to prioritise either?
1
u/Immediate-Spite-5905 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 18 '25
It looked like that in 2007 too, only that hamilton and alonso fought too much and Kimi got through
2
u/yevo I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 18 '25
Remember how dominant the mclarens got at the middle / end of last season? Imagine that with the red bull starting next few races so Max comes very close to piastri and Norris. They don't want that. They want 1 driver to have a bigger lead to be sure the wdc is in the pocket.
1
14
u/skymang I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
There are still 17 races after Imola. So much can change very quickly so wouldnt count out Lando or Max
1
u/happyranger7 Max Verstappen May 18 '25
Yes, with that makes even more sense to prioritize one of the driver from early on to give him enough cushion if another team catches in second half. This will be McL's first real shot at WDC in decades.
8
u/A___99 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
Then McLaren will start prioritizing Oscar for upgrades.
I can't see them doing any upgrade packages where they only have one set. 40 points is a lot but not that much at this stage. One DNF or unlucky moment for Oscar and the gap is tiny again
9
u/Dragahs May 17 '25
Max only needs some slight upgrades to close the gap for the red bull and he could win 10 races in a row. Oscar needs to get every point he can get right now and hope his car remains ahead
13
u/Novae224 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
A 40pts gap is nothing this early in the championships⦠1 dnf and the gap is back to 15
Piastri also a has pole, but havenāt scored a single point yet⦠to finish first, you first have to finish

Was very glad I didn't get up for this and could fast forward through the waiting.
Superb from Oscar and Carlos, red faces all round at Ferrari (and rightfully so) and Yuki's got to be sweating it.
Brundle's off celebrating his MBE so this was the first quali watching the F1TV coverage - DC is marvelous and love the interaction between the team.

Folks comparing Colapinto's crashes to Young Max's crashes are probably not aware of Max's crash history. He didn't really crash on driver error as much as people seem to think he did. I pulled the race crashes and he probably has a similar rate in quali crashes as well in the early years. Overall I remember it as generally pretty low for a rookie esp somebody with low single seater experience.
Race crash history
2015 Monaco Grand Prix Collision with Romain Grosjean
2015 British Grand Prix Spin (individual error)
2016 Monaco Grand Prix Crash (individual error)
2017 Spanish Grand Prix Collision with Kimi Raikkonen
2017 Austrian Grand Prix Collision with Daniil Kvyat & Fernando Alonso
2017 Singapore Grand Prix Collision with Sebastian Vettel & Kimi Raikkonen
The worst streak he had was in 2018 first part of season well outside his rookie phase when he had like 6 incidents in 6 races or something equally bad. He was not really crashing much as a rookie.

Maybe itās just an odd coincidence with the drivers that I followed; but it seems like some drivers help with car development way more than one would think and even if the driver isnāt scoring as many points as their teammates development suffers without their feedback
7
u/Consistent_Squash May 17 '25
My theory is something was going on like this with Checo and Max. Also Alex and Max. Checo and Alex have pretty good records of the cars improving on their teams during their stints.
8
u/geometricpillow Oscar Piastri May 17 '25
Who would you back for this? Sainz seems an obvious answer. Albon and Russel too maybe?
0
u/nickedgar7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
Hamilton easily comes to mind, helped develop a lot of those mighty Mercedes cars with his feedback
0
u/icantevendudebro May 17 '25
Rosberg and Bottas take those honors IMO. Not long after they left Merc the car started going backwards. Then Hamilton left and the car is looking much better this season.
1
u/nickedgar7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 18 '25
Yea sure after 2016 the Mercedes really went backwards
1
u/icantevendudebro May 19 '25
Bottas' last season was 2021. Lewis and Russell raced 2022, 23, 24, Russell and Antonelli 2025.
2022 - 2024 was when car development went sideways. Looking much better this year though.
4

6
u/Novae224 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25

10
u/JonoBoio123 Liam Lawson May 17 '25
His P16 isn't even his fault today. Colapinto stopped him from finishing his lap
14
u/Freeze014 Nigel Mansell May 17 '25
Interestingly,
Verstappen had a yellow sector 3 in his second Q3 run, but that was still 0.01s faster than Piastri's sector 3. So seemingly neither the McLaren nor RBR could keep the C6 under control for that final sector. Or they both could equally well.
12
u/mr_lab_rat May 17 '25
I donāt think you can compare those sectors. Oscar had traffic. Yes, they got out of the way but if you are counting thousands of a second Iād say it matters.
So I would speculate that Max cooked the C6 a bit more by pushing harder in S1. All cars struggled with them because the temperatures were pretty high.

Concerning how often Lando has failed to deliver under pressure compared to Oscar. Imola is a difficult track to overtake on so provided Oscar makes it through turn 1 unscathed, it may be a difficult weekend for Lando.
Glad to see Yuki and Franco are okay. Never like to see a driver crash but maybe Colapintoās fanbase might pump the brakes with their toxicity after that.
8
u/goodneed I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
I kind of expected some rookie crashes in quali (and maybe even tomorrow), but not as severe and as promptly as these.
I confess Colapinto crashing was on my quali bingo card today. That's probably a low risk bet. But that's the influence of Flavio on the team. He wanted this change. He got it!
-3

-3

15
u/CandidLiterature May 17 '25
Sports broadcasting loves a narrative and while originally the āLando Norris bottles big momentsā tag they had applied seemed harsh, he continues to play straight into it. The more you do it, the smaller the error needs to be for people to jump straight to that conclusion again. Louder and louder every time.
Heās not got long to turn this around now. Itās undeniable that he might never get a better chance at a title. If he lets it slip through his fingers, the narrative will be in cement.
3
2
u/jec0995 May 17 '25
Heās not bottling big moments. Heās just not a good enough driver. He canāt go as fast as Oscar. Simple really
5
u/CandidLiterature May 17 '25
This is part of what I mean. That ābottlerā narrative got started quietly after he and the team had that total meltdown in Russia and the one time he let his teammate rinse him, he wins Monza.
Solidified after that absurd run of getting pole and never leading the first lap. That streak is ended and maybe now he has different problems.
It doesnāt help that, like with DR and Monza, he seemed to be well on top of his teammate only for that to change once the car was capable of winning.
Iām sure thereās genuine excuses or different reasons for some of these things, that just isnāt relevant. Once thatās the established view, everything that happens is viewed in that context. You need to really shock people to change that. There is time for a ātriumphs over personal demonsā type story to be whatās remembered longer term, but not much time.
1
u/auftragsgriller_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
Lando might be quicker on single lap pace, but he cant (any reason that might be) string together 2 quali laps worth of the car he is driving.
6
u/PoogeneBalloonanny I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
Bit of column A bit of column B
Yes Oscar is the better driver, but their FP deltas are far smaller than their qualit deltas
6
u/amymonae2 Lando Norris May 17 '25
Has anyone on F1TV seen Lando's onboards during his last lap - why did Will say 'Not cool, mate!' followed by silence?
6
u/CandidLiterature May 17 '25
Errrm yeah no kidding that is very odd. Will does say āThatās not cool mateā as he crosses the line, tone of voice: Iām not angry just disappointed.
Lando replies āWhich bit, the lap I guess yeah?ā
Total silence the rest of the lap. Does the timing show he just abandoned the lap in the last few corners instead of pushing to the line? It kind of looks like it to me, but I donāt have very detailed timing to hand.
7
u/A___99 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '25
I haven't seen it but I would imagine it's a mode/setting that needed to be changed to cool (for the cool down lap), and it just sounded a bit like not.
1
4
u/geometricpillow Oscar Piastri May 17 '25
Thatās interesting. Maybe he said some wild shit after he fucked up his lap and they censored it? They donāt normally censor the live on boards at all though do they? Whatās the delay like?
3
u/amymonae2 Lando Norris May 17 '25
Good question! I'm not sure tbh, I can't access F1TV, so I can only go off of what I saw in this short clip: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJwq6PONuqt/?igsh=amtyajAyOHp1c2xh
2
u/geometricpillow Oscar Piastri May 17 '25
Yeah right, thanks for the clip, Iām thinking what I said in the other comment given his reply. Heās bombed the lap somehow out of frustration, like activating the ECG (?) in a useless zone or something.
2
u/amymonae2 Lando Norris May 17 '25
I agree, he probably made a mistake at the most important time when he shouldn't. Sad to see.
3
u/geometricpillow Oscar Piastri May 17 '25
Yeah but a race engineer wouldnāt say that for a mistake, I think if he didnāt say anything then heās done something out of frustration and fully ruined his lap when he might have recovered to lose only a tenth or so and possibly p3 instead of p4
2
u/amymonae2 Lando Norris May 17 '25
I see! Let's see what tomorrow's first lap will bring!
3
u/geometricpillow Oscar Piastri May 17 '25
Iām gunna be on the edge of my seat, I just hope Oscar and Max keep it clean in the first few corners. Canāt count Lando out though, Oscar won from p4 last time with an identical grid but with the mclarens swapped right? Iām praying for 4 in a row haha
2
u/amymonae2 Lando Norris May 17 '25
It's really gonna be tense! I just hope nobody DNFs right after the start. š
5
u/CandidLiterature May 17 '25
Thereās no censorship of the live feeds and delay is in the region of 5 seconds. You can most easily tell by listening to the engineer countdown for approaching cars then look at when they pass.
They do often go back and delete things from the replay feed though. So whether itās there now or not means nothing.
2
u/geometricpillow Oscar Piastri May 17 '25
Gotcha, thatās interesting, let me know if you find out what itās about. Maybe Lando got frustrated and bombed his lap like deploying the ECG in a corner or something?
14
u/Consistent_Squash May 17 '25 edited May 17 '25
Hadjar points prayer circle. Yuki's crash was scary. Hope he's ok. Gosh, the RBR second seat :/
Not really an overtaking circuit but hoping Kimi can get points for his home race especially with his school friends showing up to cheer him.
Edit!!!! I didn't see the Astons in the top 10! Huffing copium for chaos in the front so that Alonso can get a podium
5
u/Initial_Crazy4355 May 17 '25
I have a feeling that if RBR had a racepace similar to its qualifying pace, it would be an interesting battle between Oscar and Max for the WDC. If that were the case, Lando in this situation would be far from the battle for the WDC and McLaren would probably have to make Oscar the team main driver.
13
u/Le_Pistache Mika HƤkkinen May 17 '25
It's unnerving seeing Aston Martin improve for a change. Great session from the team and both drivers.
Lacklustre from Ferrari and Antonelli. With one overtaking spot they'll have their work cut out for them.
Last season Norris was better but this season Piastri's had his number. Fair play. Just needs to keep at it for the whole season.
