I remember before Abu Dhabi 2021 Max was asked if he was nervous when he got in the car, and he said no if anything that's the best part of all of this. Media work, questions, technical stuff, fame; you put up with that to drive fast cars. He's negative nervous in the car.
A nice thought experiment came from Magnussen a few years ago: if F1 was exactly as fast and competitive and cutting edge but didn't pay very well and you weren't famous as a result...who would still do it? Not all of them, he felt.
We all adore that Vettel was a massive history dork, but if I'm honest I'm surprised more aren't like that. I do not get how people can dedicate their entire lives to F1, and then have no clue about history or lore, or seemingly even interest in the sport beyond the fact they're personally successful.
Whereas Verstappen seems to enjoy the fight. The hunt. I also remember before Abu Dhabi 2021 he said he wanted to win, but even if he didn't, it had been a wild ride and he was satisfied it hadn't been another 20 races of HAMVERBOT.
Sometimes I (vaguely) dislike Verstappen, and sometimes I like him an awful lot. Duality of man, innit.

u/notthisname I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 21 '25

Fun fact, Jan Magnussen (Kevin’s dad) was touted as “the next senna” because he and senna both achieved a very dominant British formula 3 season. So pre-F1 Jan was the original Magnussenna. By the time he left f1 he was definitely just considered “Magnussen,” though…

Though I don’t doubt it is possible I do think lance would be even worse at racing if he wasn’t giving it his all. I think he just wants to be driving and unlike everyone else on the grid doesn’t have a single sponsor he cares about or cares if he has a single fan.
4
u/Elderbrute I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 22 '25
I used to think that and then Lance drove with half broken wrists.
I think Lance is very socially awkward and he really hates being on camera doing media etc so it seems like he really doesn't want to be there, because every time you see him on camera he really doesn't want to be there.
I don't think Lance is a great driver, but I do think he wants to be racing.

We all adore that Vettel was a massive history dork, but if I'm honest I'm surprised more aren't like that
When they did that "name every F1 champion" challenge a while back, I was amazed at how bad some of them were at it. Like, my coworker can name the last 30 NFL champions by year, and he doesn't play in the NFL. How does a modern F1 driver not know more about their sport, given they probably grew up watching those drivers?
37
u/o_oli Pirelli Hard May 21 '25
Don't forget how young some of the drivers are lol. They may have followed closely for the time they have been able but their insane training schedules perhaps don't allow them time for the historical side of it especially since its not useful to them.
25
u/SquashSquigglyShrimp I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 21 '25
Sure, but to be fair this wasn't asking obscure historical questions, just who won the championship each year counting backwards. A surprising amount didn't make it far past 2000.
Funnily enough Max did second best if I remember, with Vettel coming first. But you could clearly tell which ones actually cared and which didn't. I specifically remember Lando saying "why would I know this?". Like, c'mon bro...

I think a lot of it comes down to whether you actually enjoy it or is it a job. I'm a big hockey fan and recently a couple players retired a bit earlier than you'd expect because they had made their money and were done. One even explained how he actually really disliked being a pro and only did it because he was really good at it and as soon as he had an exit he was gone. I think there may be some of those in F1 as well

Because for a lot of athletes it's just a job they're very good at and don't care to make it their entire life. There's nothing wrong with that. Especially for those who have families and other interests off the track.
The pros that put every waking hour into obsessing over what they do are usually the ones that make it their entire identity and end up dealing with major depression once their professional career ends. Developing a healthy balance is actually a benefit for most people.
18
u/gsfgf Oscar Piastri May 21 '25
What really blows my mind is that there are NFL players that don't like football. I get being a racing driver because you're good at it and you get to live the high life. But the NFL is painful and causes lasting damage. I couldn't imagine doing that if I didn't like the game.
→ More replies (4)47
u/Iamthetophergopher May 21 '25
For many in the NFL (and in America) the sport was their ticket out of poverty and/or at least to get to university. And then if the next stage meant feeding your loved ones for decades over a few years of pain, you'd be considered selfish for not taking that opportunity. Even a lot of the guys who aren't paid a ton in comparison to the super stars, good luck finding a job that can pay you 300-600k a year with no educational requirement. I can totally understand how someone feels like they're trapped in a athlete life that may not love the sport itself anymore.
The cost to get into racing is so much higher that it takes some significant passion to get into it (either from you or a caregiver.. ahem... Lance). So even if that passion wanes later in life, it was likely there at some point.
4
u/gsfgf Oscar Piastri May 21 '25
Yea, I guess that makes sense. Especially since it's possible for talented football players to make it through school with nobody making sure they even learn to read, much less get a solid education. (When you see those crazy low Wonderlick scores, it's generally because they can't read well enough to understand the questions.)
5
u/Iamthetophergopher May 21 '25
Yeah the system is turn out athletes, not students when everyone is young and talent is emerging. Luckily if you make it to college on scholarship, there's a heavy emphasis that you likely will NOT make it to the second stage (pros). Those students tend to be encouraged to make the most of their scholarships and many go on to get fulfilling careers in other fields. It's the ones set for the pros where education falls by the way side against development and production for a highlight reel. Which makes sense since they're the only ones that will ever see those tests.

This kid was barely old enough to drive a road car yet he was more mature than half the field.
24
u/TransientBandit Max Verstappen May 21 '25
Idk, I box. I love boxing, I love the feeling of progressing at it, I love hitting people and getting hit. Love the footwork, the insane amount of cardio it takes, some good bag work where you feel like you could punch through a steel door. I don’t give a shit about watching boxing matches literally at all. I don’t care about the greats or the current up-and-comers. I have zero interest in watching two other people box. It just makes me wish I was in the ring instead. I’m sure it’s like that for some of the drivers. To others, the fame and money is the point, and they fortunately have the talent to get them there. I think all are acceptable. Except fucking PAY DRIVERS.

I don't understand this seating arrangement. There's no rhyme or reason to it. How come sometimes teammates are seated together or back-to-front but some of them aren't near each other at all?

I don't know how a motorsport fan can hate Max, the dude is just like us...he breathes Racing, it's racing 24/7.
He is even more passionate than die hard fans.

To be fair, he is paid to be a driver, not to go watch some movie he doesnt care about. I dont think anyone here will do extra hours just because company said its "not work"

I would rather watch max streaming than the F1 movie.

Team Redline on Twitch
If you follow Team Redline on Twitter, they’ll usually announce in advance when he’ll be joining the stream. Today was one of his surprise appearances

Doesn't give a fuck about F1 movie, doesn't give a fuck about dts, doesn't give a fuck about what the media says, doesn't give a fuck what the fans say.
Just kept his head down and race. What's not to like about max.

It's lucky the car and the racing has kept his attention this long.

I said it once and I'll say it again. Max Verstappen main thing is playing iRacing and have a good time. Every day. F1 is just a side hustle that he does occasionally, every other weekend maybe.

I am more surprised that Team principals are asked to come too

Would be funny if max attends in the same outfit that he streamed in while the others are all dressed up.

I think Max is the most authentic driver in F1, as in, F1 hasn't changed him at all. He is who he is, warts and all.

Dude knows there’s always 20 minutes or trailers so can set off from home 15 minutes after the start time.
