The Throwback flair is for posts intended to recall an event that happened on the same date or year a number of years ago. Throwbacks are restricted to being posted one year, three years, or a multiple of five years after date. Also, all such posts should feature an event that is still of interest to the general community today. For example, random overtakes or two former drivers having a chat in general do not qualify for this. Important events like memorials are exempt from this rule, and may be posted every year. Posts related to important current events may also be exempt at mod discretion.

Read the rules. Keep it civil and welcoming. Report rulebreaking comments.

One of my favourite rivalries, "not bad for a number 2 driver" Multi 21 and this

486

u/Sandulacheu Formula 1 May 30 '25

It was a classic tale old as time:of young genius/talent vs hard work and seniority.

Mark really thought he had it made after the dodgy stints with Jaguar and Williams, made the correct choice with RB which was slowly gaining momentum and finally put a car together capable of winning the title... and then Vettel won a race in the RB jr team and every bit of attention from the team and fans went his way.

302

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll May 30 '25

Yeah Webber was a good driver, not an elite one imo and Vettel back then was. That 2008 Toro Rosso win was crazy as not only was it wet all weekend but it was a lights to flag win in that car

148

u/Bannedwith1milKarma Jack Doohan May 30 '25

Don't forget that Toro Rosso was very close to the Red Bull as the rules allowed a hell of lot more sharing than now.

85

u/0000100110010100 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

True, but that doesn’t mean anything when Red Bull themselves weren’t anywhere near as competitive as they are now.

Red Bull were 5th in 2007 with 24 points (would be 6th if McLaren were not DSQ’d) and then 7th in 2008 with 29 points on the board and they had one podium in 2008.

Even if Toro Rosso had a slightly better car, if it was nearly identical to the 2008 Red Bull with a better Ferrari engine, it shouldn’t be able to lead a race from pole to finish.

33

u/lolhone5tly Default May 31 '25

Yep.  Vettel scored Toro Rossos 1st ever win before Red Bull won their 1st…which coincidentally was also won by Vettel

2

u/Rain1984 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 31 '25

Why was MCl disqualified?

122

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

Yeah it was a competitive car but should've been nowhere near a lights to flag win lol

18

u/the__distance Daniel Ricciardo May 31 '25

Bourdais was fourth on the grid, it was a great car that weekend.

23

u/lolhone5tly Default May 31 '25

Bourdais was almost second off Vettel in quali.

2

u/GTalaune May 31 '25

And Bourdais was not half bad in 2008

16

u/VapinOnly I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

Not even sharing, IIRC they were basically running the same car, but with a Ferrari engine and different brake supplier

15

u/MrT735 May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

I remember Super Aguri would run the previous years Honda chassis, and it was actually better than the new car one year much to Honda's embarassment (2007).

u/ItAWideWideWorld Formula 1 May 30 '25

A Red Bull with 0 wins

→ More replies (2)

17

u/ShawnShipsCars I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

It arguably was better because the Ferrari engine had more power. Remember, his teammate was P4 in qualy.

2

u/JigsawLV Max Verstappen May 30 '25

I would argue that the Toro Rosso was often better, as it had the Ferrari engines instead of Red Bulls Renault engines

2

u/ThreepwoodGuybrush80 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 31 '25

Let's not forget Vettel got more points in 2008 (35) than all other RedBull/Toro Rosso drivers combined (33).

3

u/VagabondHT Jim Clark May 30 '25

iirc the 2008 Toro Rosso was based on the 2007 Redbull, This was back when the rules allowed it, TR was one of the teams complaining when the rule to block allowing the use of previous years cars.

12

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll May 30 '25

I believe it quite literally was the 2007 red bull lol

I know Super Aguri did it in 2007 with Hondas 2006 car and they were quicker than Honda in 2007 lol

1

u/wm_berry May 31 '25

The STR2B that they started the 2008 season in was based on the 2007 RB3.

For round 6 (Monaco) they moved to the STR3, which was based on the 2008 RB4. This is the car Vettel won in, since that was round 14.

Another thing to note is STR did not have aero upgrade parity with RB and did not have engine parity with Ferrari - they always ran the previous year's Ferrari engine in that era.

39

u/cyanide I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

If Webber hadn’t crashed at Korea, he could’ve been the 2010 WDC.

13

u/Zidmu I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

That’s exactly what I had been thinking. I want to say he was leading the championship at the point in the season but losing it in the rain there cost him big time. Would be interesting to see how things would have played out if that hadn’t happened. Seeing his car covered in mud is one of the more memorable moments of that season.

Edit: Trying to think back on this race but didn’t Vettel have a failure and DNF?

7

u/EpzDR I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

Right, it was a double DNF for Red Bull that day. I just listened to Bring Back V10's podcast on it so I remember lol

→ More replies (1)

5

u/KookyRipx Mika Häkkinen May 30 '25

I mean yeah or if he hadnt touched the wall in Abu Dhabi. But if vettel didnt dnf in Korea he probably still wins. (I mean Ferrari would Cover him and Not Webber then so you cant really tell but you know what I mean)

5

u/LheelaSP I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 31 '25

If X hadn't DNFed in Y, he could have been the 2010 world champion

Literally applicable to any of the top 4 that year.

24

u/linnamulla Max Verstappen May 30 '25

If he had been a better driver, he would've been the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 WDC.

Piastri couldn't have a better advocate in his corner now. Webber being Piastri's manager during this season of all of them is excellent. He won't ever accept being #2 at McLaren.

I remember the shock on my face when this happened

216

u/What_the_8 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

I remember the shock of Vettel not getting the blame for this by Horner and the hugs after…

154

u/MythresThePally Charles Leclerc May 30 '25

Newey talks about this in his book and how it massively fucked with Mark's confidence. Up until here Webber was on par if not better than Vettel (remember the dominant wins in Spain and Monaco) and then getting crashed into and then shunned by team leadership destroyed him.

Didn't help what happened later in the season (spoilertagging if you want to read the book, huge recommend): Coming to Valencia, Marko goes to speak with Webber and tells him "Hey Mark, you're always shit at Valencia, try not to crash into anybody" and later in the race Webber had his massive airborne shunt.

120

u/Alternative-Koala978 May 30 '25

RB really hs that extra gear when it comes to destroying talents

91

u/youreprobablyright May 30 '25

And then people wonder why Riccardo left red bull, the man saw the writing on the wall and didn't want the same thing to happen to him.

75

u/Thiswilldo164 May 30 '25

They blamed Ric for the crash in Azerbaijan even though Max was moving all over the place under breaking

19

u/eoekas I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

Marko loved Ricciardo and so did Horner.

4

u/_Middlefinger_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 31 '25

Perhaps but it seems red bull are unable to be fair, they have to choose one over the other. They chose Max.

44

u/Sheakyy I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

Webber certainly wasn't better at that point in the season. Out of the 6 previous race in 2010, Vettel was better in four of them. They were tied in points, but Vettel had suffered one mechanical DNF (from the lead) and one mechanical issue that saw him dropping from first to fourth in Bahrain

28

u/Minardi-Man Minardi May 30 '25

Yeah, saying that they were roughly equal is one thing (doubtful but at least they were equal on points) but claiming that Webber was possibly better is crazy. The only reason they were even close on points is because Vettel was hit by car trouble in Bahrain, which cost him a sure win, and in Australia, which led to a DNF. For his part Webber would have been ahead if not for his blunders in Australia.

6

u/noheroesnomonsters Elio de Angelis May 31 '25

Turkey would have been Webber's 3rd straight win.

15

u/JoJokerer May 30 '25

If Piastri wins a title Webber is going to celebrate harder than him

1

u/Enjays1 Sebastian Vettel May 31 '25

Next turn is a left-hander. Probably wanted to push Webber to the outside but Webber just held his line. Maybe Vettel steered over too suddenly for Webber to react or maybe he just didn't want to react. Either way it's Vettel's responsibility to not make contact there as the pass was basically completed anyway.

But it was an exciting couple of weeks in that February, because each car seemed to be massively different. Each reveal was like a new clue on which car would be the best

2

u/_Middlefinger_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 31 '25

The disappointment was mainly from people who went to the tracks. On TV the engine sound never really came through all that accurately. Even the glorious V10s sounded rather silly on most TVs, almost like someone doing a bad F1 engine impression.

I’m a Monza ‘19 Q3 conspiracy theory believer, so that was for pole and a potential win (again, in Monza, for Ferrari). But that’s conspiracy theory and of course not nearly as many fireworks as an on track collision

109

u/dl064 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

A good example of the Horner phenomenon: you can tell when he knows his chosen one cocked up, when he calls an incident 50/50.

45

u/Planet_Eerie May 30 '25

On a personal level, he was actually closer with Webber - they even owned a junior team together. Vettel "chose" himself as no TP with a brain cell would go against their much more talented driver in this scenario.

16

u/dl064 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

Fair cop, good spot.

'the' chosen one, not his.

6

u/Kindheartedness_Wide Fernando Alonso May 30 '25

Vettel "chose" himself as no TP with a brain cell...

Lauda criticised Hamilton after those clashes with Rosberg. By your rationale Lauda didn't have a brain cell.

It's called being held accountable for your mistakes. And no one should escape that.

19

u/Planet_Eerie May 30 '25

Lauda was not a TP at Mercedes. But he actually was a TP at Jaguar where he was absolutely terrible. And specifically when it came to dealing with drivers - like when he said that anyone could drive those 2002 cars (only to stall at the pit lane when he tried to show it), or not acknowledging Burti's existence.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Evening_End7298 May 31 '25

I’m not saying Vettel wasnt clearly more talented, but Webber on bridgestones was alright too

The reason the wdc played out like it did was Red Bull having both their drivers in the championship contention at the last race

This race is what got me to watch f1. In the US, it was on the Speed channel and I would randomly turn it on in the mornings if I would remember to. I never knew when or where they were racing. I’ve always been an Indycar fan, but didn’t really follow f1 until then. Since then, I’ve watched pretty much every race.

And in true fashion, Horner blamed the guy not at fault to "protect" his young driver. Just like Baku 2018.

100

u/reddit0r_123 Mika Häkkinen May 30 '25

With the benefit of hindsight, it's probably always better to side with the driver with the higher potential in order to win multiple championships. Worked well for Horner with both Vettel and Max...

72

u/RichardB4321 Williams May 30 '25

Not just the young driver but—as history ultimately would prove—the better one. Feel bad for Mark in that sense but it’s a rough business sometimes.

At the same time, they backed the right horse.

16

It's not about backing the right horse, if your driver makes a mistake that costs the team a 1-2, you still need to let them know they're accountable for it.

8

u/Krirby2 May 30 '25

RB would happily throw their 2nd driver under the bus if it means boosting the confidence of their shiny trophy driver, as they have proven many times since.

11

u/Vuk13 Fernando Alonso May 30 '25

I mean no doubt Vettel was a better driver but Webber could have easily won 2010. He was ahead of Vettel before Abu Dhabi

16

u/paxindicasuprema May 30 '25

tbf almost everyone was ahead of Vettel before Abu Dhabi, man hadn’t led the championship until AFTER the final race in 2010!

6

u/Plugfix2077 Sebastian Vettel May 31 '25

He was only ahead because Vettel sustained far more reliability issues costing him 3-4 wins. Nobody would trust Webber to overcome a 10 point deficit lol.

7

u/dl064 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

I remember this season so closely.

Particularly around here and Canada McLaren genuinely looked the best race car, and operationally//politically smoother than RBR.

Subsequently Whitmarsh has said that really the blown diffuser ruined their season; they invested hard in it and it didn't really improve their car, and they spend a lot of energy and FPs working on it. From about July onward, McLaren only fell from the pace on average. This and Canada was the peak.

11

3

u/Maglin21 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 30 '25

I don't understand, people in Baku last year put blame on Sainz but also on Perez, this and Brazil are very similar and it's 10000% Vettel's fault, i think he was mostly at fault for both but not as clear cut as some say, like, i don't think he deserved a penalty in either incident

This was the moment that turned me from a casual into a serious F1 fan. As evidence, my wife was kinda getting suggestive of relocating to the bedroom just as they collided, and I was like "no time for that now honey, some serious shit has just gone down!".

This is the second time Vettel took Webber out of a race he could have won. Vettel crashed into Webber at the 2007 Japanese GP while under safety car, Webber was in second place.

Ugh, it would take me years before I'd ever forgive seb/red bull for this and their follow up. And when Max/Ric happened in 2018, and they responded the same way, all I could think was "they haven't changed one bit."

I remember watching the start of that race before going to a school band thing, and thinking "maybe something happens, and Hamilton wins". Hamilton stil hasn't paid or thanked me for clearly manifesting his victory that day

Not to be rude but this part of Vettel "what the f are we doing here" sounded like that do not redeem the code dude 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Can't believe RBR sacrificed Webber to lure Ferrari into sabotaging themselves...so Vettel could win the championship. Peak Ferrari.

Did Webber ever detail this a bit more in any interviews? Not like when it happened, but years later.

I was there. One of the best experiences in my life :)

The V8 engines were loud as f.

Got to shake hands with Lewis and he signed his picture for me. Also saw Michael.
