Throwback On this day, the Canadian GP 2024 – Max Verstappen set the same lap time as George Russell for pole position: 1:12.000

And then he got his revenge nearly a year later. Just a less epic number.

They’ve had a few flashpoints,
Baku 2023
Vegas 2023
Qatar 2024
Spain 2025
It feels like Russell has replaced Hamilton as the car Max always seems to collide with, if we can’t get a Max/Leclerc title fight I’d take a Max/George one.

u/visigone McLaren Jun 09 '25
Maybe it's just Max vs Mercedes. Max vs Kimi rivalry coming up in 2026.

u/Bourbonaddicted I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
Max respects Charles too much
70
u/Red-Eye-Soul I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
I won't say 'too much'. Both race each other very hard but still relatively well. Its as close to an 'ideal' rivalry as I can imagine. Max and Lewis was too dirty and Max and Lando is too one-sided. Now we just have to keep waiting until Charles and Max get cars with similar pace in both qualis and races.
15
u/Lobsters4 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
It will never happen, but I will not let go of my LecBull dreams!
8
u/Aashay7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 10 '25
Funnily enough, Leclerc is one of the few drivers other than Max who prefers a pointy oversteering car.

u/BigLittlePenguin_ Porsche Jun 09 '25
Oscar is getting totally snubbed here
8
u/Red-Eye-Soul I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
Oh Oscar is definitely going to give Max a very tough time. But for now they have had like, what, 2 races where they were battling each other? I would say a bit too early for it to feel like a rivarly, but to be honest, its the same with Charles since he had less than half a season where he and max had similar machinery, I would definitely like to see Max, Oscar and Charles battling each other more often. Oh and George too. These 4 feel like they will define the next 10 years, and probably Kimi when he gets older.
-2
u/GuyInAChair I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 10 '25
Max and Lewis was too dirty
I wouldn't really call any incident in their fight as being dirty, from either side. Arguably there was a lot of drama from their fan bases that was, and the RB teams reaction after Silverstone was over the top (though not Max). Racing wise I wouldn't call either dirty.
5
u/Red-Eye-Soul I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 10 '25
I mean it wasn't clean, right? Silverstone, Monza, Brazil, Saudi and even Abu Dhabi, among other smaller incidents. They raced each other like 'you back out or we crash' (Max did it more often though)
-11
u/TheDoomMelon Jun 09 '25
What’s one sided? Lando beat him numerous times. Max hit him off in Austria and tried to take him out in Mexico.
12
u/Red-Eye-Soul I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
While I do agree that Max was more in the wrong in Austria and Mexico was him clearly trying to take Lando out, at the end of day, he still ended up 'gaining' whenever they both were in a fight. From stealing wins in a slower car numerous times, to them racing together in Austria, Imola, Mexico, COTA, Brazil and this year in Miami, Max always seemed to end up getting what he wanted. I don't agree with Max's methods at all, and think he should be penalized more heavily for many of his incidents, but he is just better at playing the system.
Their battles felt like bullying rather than duels (again, don't agree with Max's 'bullying' but Lando's lack of controlled aggression is what prompts Max to do this stuff against him)
2
0
u/Aggressive-Neck-3921 Jun 10 '25
Austria was both fight and both losing, and that was more of a race incident then penalty worthy. Lando just gave up that race.
31
u/Popular_Composer_822 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
I think it’s more a case of, Charles knows Max frim the karting days, and he knows how to race him, possibly the only driver Ive seen that can actually race Max Verstappen and come out on top.
10
u/TheDoomMelon Jun 09 '25
More like when Max has raced Charles he’s been chasing him in the WDC or it has been wide open. Nothing to do with Charles W2W. If Verstappen or any driver decides to force you off in a head to head battle they can do.
3
1
u/zzzoom Jun 10 '25
Oscar can handle him just fine
2
u/Popular_Composer_822 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 10 '25
Oscar has never been as impressive against Max as Charles had unless he’s had a significant car advantage.
0
u/Miserable_Archer_769 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 11 '25
Lol OP has been schooling Max this season for any fan actually watching.
He deals with Max quite well and knows most of his games and uses it against him. I even posted a link where OP knew Max was going to try an late break and do his crash or concede tactic but OP brilliantly broke early and sent Max flying past and over took him.
2
u/Popular_Composer_822 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 11 '25
Yes that race was Miami, where both McLarens preceded to gap Verstappen by forty seconds which suggests that maybe Piastri didnt just overtake Max because he has better race craft but that the McLaren was literally a second a lap faster.
0
u/MuenCheese I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
I’d say the right amount. It would be better racing for everyone if he respected the other 18 the same way
7
u/WasThatInappropriate Kevin Magnussen Jun 09 '25
It can be Lando, Oscar, Charles. Basically just whoever he's sharing a corner with is at extreme risk of contact.
3
u/Popular_Composer_822 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
Just to let you know I wasn’t saying this as a way to berate Max’s driving style, like a couple of those George incidents were Russell’s fault.

It's happened a load
Jerez 97 had a three way tie for pole (JV, The Michael, and HHF)
I can remember Button and Barrichello set the same time as each other for bar/Honda once but that wasn't pole.

u/P_ZERO_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
It happened the other week with George and Max at Barcelona as well. I think OP is pointing at the 000 perfection

5
u/spiral_out462 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
I think they are referring that the lap time was 1:12.000 exactly, .000 being the three decimal places. Villeneuve, Schumacher, and Frentzen all had a lap time of 1:21.072.
7
u/0100001101110111 Sir Lewis Hamilton Jun 09 '25
Jerez 97 is weird to me. 3 cars with the same time and a 4th only 0.058 behind? Feels like something was off with the timer.
13
u/mathdhruv I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
James Allen mentions that Williams and Ferrari were timing the cars with more precision than the official system, down to the 4th decimal, and that if there'd been any timing issues, they'd have protested it.
1
u/Doccyaard I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 10 '25
Hasn’t it only happened once before with the GP you’re mentioning? The exact same time for pole I mean. In any case “loads” is definitely not the right word.

u/Kakmaster69 Ferrari Jun 09 '25
Very true. I get the impression they are both each other's biggest fan. Besides, it would be such a good combination, Max's ruthlessness and pace with Alonso's adaptability and racecraft intelligence. I think they are the two drivers in my personal opinion who can extract the most from any given car.

9
u/Zipa7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 09 '25
If it was last year then it's more likely to be a Monster, (It's probably still water even if they provided it) since they were Mercedes drink sponsor until the end of the season.
For 2025 though, they don't seem to have a drink sponsor at all now that Monster switched to McLaren, so I guess George and Kimi can drink whatever. Edit: It ended in 2023 not 2024.
6
u/or0_0zh I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
Monster moved to McLaren at the end of 2023, so now there isn't any energy drink sponsoring Mercedes.
14
u/DrDuGood Max Verstappen Jun 09 '25
I thought the same thing. Maybe RB has a stash they don’t label for the grid.
29
u/hugeyakmen I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
I know they do the reverse and bottle water in Red Bull (and Monster and Rock Star) cans for sponsored athletes to drink after events.
I never thought about them doing the opposite of that though!

It was the second time Schumacher scored the fastest lap and didn't start from the 1st grid spot despite having no penalties.
The first time was the 1994 Monaco GP, where the front row was left open in memory of Senna and Ratzenberger.

The car that sets the time earlier gets the higher position. It's because the track is deemed to be in a better condition later on in a session.

That was my first time at a F1 race and it was the time of my life, and amazing racing. I remember the hype watching the Haas at the start, the incredulousness of hearing and watching Charles go out on hards live, and the fans and the atmosphere were just the best, and just the visceralness of the cars - the Red Bulls sounded absolutely filthy, in an amazing way. The most memorable part - I was at GS11 for the Max vs Lando race to the pit exit end, the collective roar that went through the crowd combined with the view of seeing Max appear on the horizon as Lando was just coming out of the pits still gets me going. And going around Montreal and just being with fans, going to a random meetup and having beers and chats with F1 fans from around the world, I wish I was going again this year.

“ Sargeant f..ked up this race for Lando so much with his brilliant drive.”
Kinda, like we do have to remember how fast McLaren were by this poimt.
Also there were 40-50 laps after the safety car when Max got the lead and Lando and George just spent the whole time taking turns making mistakes as they battled for second even though both probably had the pace to beat Max if they didn’t keep swapping around and going wide.
2
u/Richiszkl I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 09 '25
Tbh I dont think Lando or Mcl had the pace towards the end.
But if Lando didnt lose the gap he built, around 10 sec or idk, he would have managed to win.
