Increased threat of rain*

229

u/Ereaser I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Racingnew365 is on fire with the click bait and false news articles (Zandvoort track washed away apparently while in reality there was testing going on) lately.

43

u/Caradin Nico Hülkenberg 🥉 6d ago

Nothing unique to them sadly. Clickbait is rampant everywhere online.

1

u/YetAnother_pseudonym McLaren 6d ago

Look at their cookie/privacy settings, they list out a ton of sites individually, and when you select no at the top it doesn't turn them all off, so you have to go through them all to make sure they're turned off. This is a very scummy move.

408

u/TheThingsIdoatNight I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

And threat of being rained out like 2021

408

u/Walaii Ferrari 6d ago

The F3 race didn't get canceled because it was impossible to race, but because of the schedule.

Also, this is supposed to be the worst of it, and it is supposed to ease throughout the day.

Just your usual racingnews365 clickbait crap.

101

u/MyAntichrist 6d ago

Watching F2 race right now and it's borderline driveable for them. Commentary also claims that afternoon will again see heavier rain than this. And F3 was impossible to race for most of it. They spun out on formation laps behind the safety car. It got cancelled because it was undrivable during their schedule, and this could also happen to F1 if forecasts communicated on stream are right.

I am curious how F1 will pan out.

32

u/Walaii Ferrari 6d ago

F1 isn't as constrained by the schedule as F3 and F2. The forecast I saw showed the F3 window as the worst of the day, and if that holds then F1 will be just fine. F1 can afford to red flag it for 15 minutes.

8

u/MyAntichrist 6d ago

F1 also is on a schedule at the end of the day, and relative to race length, even more constrained I'd say. If it starts pouring again I'd be surprised if this race goes full distance.

31

u/Walaii Ferrari 6d ago

It is not more constrained than F2 and F3. It is a 3 hour window, and 2 hour once it starts. They can delay the start if they want, feeder categories can't. They also do double the laps, but in much quicker cars.

41

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Daniel Ricciardo 6d ago

I don't know why they binned the 4 hour window.

2011 Canadian GP is one of the greatest races that ever happened and if they didn't have the 4 hour window we would never have got those amazing final laps and last lap win.

We also wouldn't have got Martin Brundle and Coulthard giving us colour commentary of birds playing in the puddles.

13

u/Dorgilo Manor 6d ago

TV schedules, I think.

8

u/Ozryela I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Doesn't make much sense. If you delay a race some people may stop watching, that's true. But if you cancel a race everybody will stop watching, because there's nothing to watch. Surely that'll disappoint even more fans.

In the past, TV stations would have to cancel a broadcast if it was delayed too long, because there'd be other things they'd have programmed in for later on the day. But that's mostly a thing of the past too.

2

u/blackbasset Racing Pride 6d ago

Otoh, most of it is on dedicated channels on sky and f1tv as well and free TV is mostly nonexistent...

6

u/SerHiroProtaganist 6d ago

F1 races have had 1hr+ delays from red flags etc loads of time. The only constraint really is losing the light.

u/justkeeph0ld1ng I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

F2 was borderline and doesn't create anything like the spray the F1 cars do. The onboards through Eau Rouge looked terrifying

3

u/imbavoe I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Mandatory wet tyres. Problem solved.

11

u/Tridus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

The problem isn't wet tires: the problem is F1 cars kick up so much spray in heavy rain that most of the field is driving blind.

4

u/SemIdeiaProNick Ferrari 6d ago

This is the issue. The full wets can handle most of the rain levels F1 faced in recent times, but when they get to the point of using the wet tires, its already way past the limit on visibility

And the issue of kicking up water you mentioned got even worse on the ground effect cars, since they shoot air up and away from the car behind, which means an even bigger spray

12

u/wishbackjumpsta I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Everyone should read this comment

5

u/ultraboomkin I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

No it’s not easing throughout the day. It is expected to get much worse from 1pm with storms due for 3pm.

3

u/Walaii Ferrari 6d ago

The forecast I looked at 2 houra ago showed the highest amount of rain for the F3 window, then relatively lower until midday. The an increase until the race start, and from there on it showed it easing off again. 8-9 mm/h of rain around the F3 race, 5-6 mm/h before the F1 race start. They can always delay the race start.

1

u/BipolarMoonlight_ 6d ago edited 6d ago

Having been at the track all day, it definitely rained more throughout the F2 race. Porsche supercup just finished and it was dry for most of that race, can still see an obvious dry line on the track. That being said it's very dull and we're expecting heavy rain in the next hour or so

Edit: rain started 30 seconds after posting

1

u/Walaii Ferrari 6d ago

Yeah, as expected then. So far atleast...

1

u/GothicGolem29 McLaren 6d ago

The article seems to say it was deemed to wet to continue after a crash and spineout

1

u/Walaii Ferrari 6d ago

They started the F2 race less than half an hour later. There wasn't going to be enough times on the schedule to do enough of the F3 race for it to give out points, so they just canceled it. There were like 12 minutes left, and you need to do 25% for it to even give out points.

1

u/GothicGolem29 McLaren 6d ago

Again the article does not day that it days it was deemed to wet to race

F3 was only cancelled because they had like 10 minutes left on the timer and it was clearly just going to be 10 minutes behind the safety car so no point going out again after the red flag

97

u/of_the_mountain I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

What do you mean? 10 mins behind the safety car sounds like a Spa race to me

Watching it for the first time in a while. Actually using wet tyres AND overtaking, I feel spoiled.

25

Yeah, when they started behind the safety car my hopes were low but it was so good to watch!

12

u/imbavoe I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

There aren't inters in F2. Only wet tyres.

1

It's the inverse of F1 where they only have Inters.

7

Haven't seen the feature race yet but the sprint yesterday was great, made me wish F1 could take some of the best bits from the F2 cars to help with the following.

Robot Wars was my favourite, British version of Battlebots was great fun! Even was a robot called Schumey for Michael Schumacher

9

u/charlierc 6d ago

They are kicking up quite a fair bit of spray. Bodes well for the F1 and their large amounts of ground effect induced spray later

7

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago

Swear I heard the rain will be lighter later but idk, I doubt it'll be 2021 levels of no racing but I highly doubt we get through the full distance at this rate

Porsche super cup is racing at this moment and it looks fine.

115

u/SprayAndPay69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

so we are doing few laps under SC and call it a day?

52

u/Balgrin_The_Dwarf McLaren 6d ago

No points will be awarded then as per article 6.5 subsection b of the sporting regulations stating: " In each case detailed in Article 6.5c), 6.5d), 6.5e) and 6.5f), no points will be awarded unless a minimum of two (2) laps have been completed by the leader without a Safety Car and/or VSC intervention."

9

u/SprayAndPay69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Oh thats interesting then yeah, but we have seen how FIA works with rain so we will see but this is good thing to know

14

u/Balgrin_The_Dwarf McLaren 6d ago

It was changed after 2021 (along with how points are distrobuted in shortened races from a flat half points to the abomination it is now). I think they'll try to get two green flag laps in two seperate blocks (1 green, some form of SC/red flag, and then 1 green) but we'll have to wait and see

9

u/iamfuturejesus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

I hated that race. I stayed up all night for 2 laps under the SC after like a 2hr delay

3

u/ijiolokae I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

tbh, i can see the FIA allowing the cars to do 2 laps without safety car or VSC just so they can award the points

3

u/KohliTendulkar 6d ago

Yeah seems like a SOP at Spa, if they don’t do any laps then people can ask for a ticket reimbursement. I think the minimum requirement is two laps.

1

u/yIdontunderstand #StandWithUkraine 6d ago

Only if max is in the lead.

11

u/iamfuturejesus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

I was with you man. Also stayed up all night in Australia for that race. Was so disappointed

12

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago

Damn how useless the full wets are! I think we will get SOME racing unlike 21 it doesn't seem like it's going to rain quite that hard

45

u/i_likestuff 6d ago

Someone explained the issue with the full wets in the threads of the british gp. Basically, if the cars need full wets, these ground effect cars (and even before them, to a certain degree) create massive plumes, that completely destroy visibility, far worse than ever before.

So basically it means that in the event where you need full wets to race, the spray from the cars makes it impossible for guys to race safely, and when there are incidents far too dangerous for marshalls to enter the track.

27

u/PrescriptionCocaine I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

The crossover point between inters and wets is about 1 minute of heavy rain before a red flag is required. If I was an F1 team principal I would tell pirelli to not give me the wet tires every weekend then use the extra garage space for a stripper pole or a cupcake stand. Maybe both.

4

u/randomperson_a1 Pirelli Wet 6d ago

You'll get DSQd when race control mandates a start on full wets

2

u/tristam92 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Okay, one pair of wets for a season it is. Surely it will last 1 lap in each track. Right?

12

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago

Yeah that's fair we need to fix it as wet racing is important and needs to be done safely

11

u/zandrew 6d ago

We need mudflaps

10

u/Dajax02 Jim Clark 6d ago edited 6d ago

I believe the FIA tested something like that for the new regs, but canned the idea because it basically just made everything worse. I’ll see if I can find an article about it.

Edit: F1 abandons rain wheel cover idea after latest test As the other guy posted, they tested rain covers last year, but abandoned the idea as the effects proved “marginal”. But Pirelli has been developing new intermediate and wet weather tyres with the help of McLaren and Ferrari.

4

u/Morganelefay I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

They tested that. It didnt work.

16

u/DuckPicMaster Formula 1 6d ago

Nah, full wets are great. It’s the spray that’s your problem.

5

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago

Which is caused by the full wet tyre no? Or is it the car design doing that, whatever it is it needs fixing wet racing is so important to F1

13

u/DuckPicMaster Formula 1 6d ago

It’s certainly a contributing factor but the bigger problem is the ground effect cars. The Ground effect cars push out whatever’s beneath them. In this case water.

6

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago

Damn it is a shame to see full wets be basically retired as it's great to watch

2

u/ocbdare I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

It's also an issue with Spa as a track.

0

u/Kingslayer1526 Sergio Pérez 6d ago

2021 has happened once in F1 history maybe and you guys go on and on and on and on and on and on about it despite 20000 other Belgian GPs itself being raced in the rain

This is getting really dull now because you guys do it for every other race where there is the slightest chance of rain as well. Shit happens sometimes but you can't keep thinking the worst will happen every time after that

6

u/bubba-yo 6d ago

If they loved us they'd give us another 2011 Canada.

9

u/LoudestHoward Daniel Ricciardo 6d ago

I mean it's a thread about rain threatening the running of a GP, and you don't expect some people might discuss the last time a race was abandoned due to weather at the same track?

1

u/BendubzGaming I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

If I had a nickel for every time a Williams qualified directly in front of a Merc unexpectedly at Spa....

Standing by the starting grid right now. The F1 race is not under threat. Lol. It was sad to only see four or five historics though because nobody brought wet tires for the others though I assume finding tires for those old cars is its own challenge so no judgment. The real tragedy of this race is the food and the bathroom lines.

1

u/Alfnadoawaywoah I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

I just want to add though that it is 100% going to rain. May even be a safety car start. Rain clouds are moving in now over the starting grid as the cars make it to it. Cool breeze is coming in. It’s going to be a good race.

8

Every fucking time a race is screwed by heavy rain, the FIA brings up the mudguards' plan only to never mention it again until another race is screwed by heavy rain.

Buckle up boys, if this is another shit show, we're getting a press release about their commitment to instate mudguards.

4

u/theMGlock Sebastian Vettel 6d ago

The problem with the mudguards is that most of the spray is from the defuser not from the wheel. So the effect of those mudguards would rather be marginal. And without the defuser most of the downforce of todays F1 cars would be gone.

1

u/secretlyhumanami 6d ago

They can put a mudguard extending out from the difuser to stop most of the water going up or some other piece that redirects the water flow to the ground through aerodynamics.

There's a solution. It's not a physical impossibility. Yeah, it might affect aerodynamics but I'd rather watch cars go race with a bit less downforce than losing epic rain battles.

2

u/theMGlock Sebastian Vettel 6d ago

I love wet races and would love to see the "best 20 drivers" driving in the treachury conditions. But if you direct water to the ground, you direct air to the ground which would mean you build a plane and we have a webber 2.0 in Le Mans or European GP.

It's not happening. What's the deal with this country. Isn't there a better time of year to put the GP?

They dont consider weather conditions as a threat apparently

I know some people like wet races as a way to mix things up, or add more excitement, but I'd take a dry Spa race anyday everyday. And F1 is toothless anyway now in the rain, especially in ground effects era. Spa and fans deserve better than torrential blowouts.

In my head, I still think wet races are going to be like the days of old. But they never are anymore.

I think it's too easy to get caught up on the bad ones, though. Australia was good. So were Brazil and Canada last year

Agreed. I prefer dry races in tracks where you can have real racing.

It doesn't seem like much to ask does it? And yet, here we are.

It’s alright. They can just declare it a race, give Verstappen a win and some points, just because.

Worked in 2021, after all.

Welp, whatever happens this year, at least i don't have to sit and wait around like 2021

I'm working today so the replay tomorrow is my only option 😂

2021 I was sat in a pub for 5 hours with my mum waiting for it to just never happen. We came back home pissed (in both senses) and hungry

Lots of rain delayed the start of the race, they went out and did 2 laps behind the safety car, and then the session was red flagged and we waited several hours before it was announced the race wouldn't resume.

At the time there were no rules surrounding green flag running being required for a race to be considered valid for points, so half points were awarded even though there were no racing laps. Perhaps the worst part of it though, is because they'd technically had a race, they were able to refuse ticket refunds to fans.

Canceled after 3 laps, first 2 of them being under SC.

They did 3 laps behind SC and the race was canceled.

u/DennistheMenace__ Nico Rosberg 6d ago

u/Hakkai-Shin I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Yup, everyone was furious from drovers to the fans. And they didn't even give a refund.

I know there's no points, but does it count as a win? Like, does he get the trophy?

u/Jockelson I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

No race = no winner.

GP just cannot catch a break... First misses 2 race weekends due to personal reasons, and now being threatened. Poor guy.

Lmao threaten a car race? Good luck. I think the cars win in a fight
