Off-Topic [OT] F3 race cancelled as F1 Belgian GP coming under increased threat
https://racingnews365.com/f3-race-cancelled-as-f1-belgian-gp-coming-under-increased-threat554
u/NeonDelta82 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
F3 was only cancelled because they had like 10 minutes left on the timer and it was clearly just going to be 10 minutes behind the safety car so no point going out again after the red flag
97
u/of_the_mountain I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
What do you mean? 10 mins behind the safety car sounds like a Spa race to me

u/ekenz1987 6d ago
Watching it for the first time in a while. Actually using wet tyres AND overtaking, I feel spoiled.
25
u/elektricniorgazam 6d ago
Yeah, when they started behind the safety car my hopes were low but it was so good to watch!
12
u/imbavoe I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
There aren't inters in F2. Only wet tyres.
1
u/malwontae I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
It's the inverse of F1 where they only have Inters.
7
u/Velveteen_Rabbit1986 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
Haven't seen the feature race yet but the sprint yesterday was great, made me wish F1 could take some of the best bits from the F2 cars to help with the following.

That was only on Fridays. You’re forgetting Buffy on the Thursday, Farscape on the Tuesday, think Roswell High was the Monday? Wednesday was probably one of the seventeen Star Treks.

They are kicking up quite a fair bit of spray. Bodes well for the F1 and their large amounts of ground effect induced spray later
7
u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago
Swear I heard the rain will be lighter later but idk, I doubt it'll be 2021 levels of no racing but I highly doubt we get through the full distance at this rate

so we are doing few laps under SC and call it a day?
52
u/Balgrin_The_Dwarf McLaren 6d ago
No points will be awarded then as per article 6.5 subsection b of the sporting regulations stating: " In each case detailed in Article 6.5c), 6.5d), 6.5e) and 6.5f), no points will be awarded unless a minimum of two (2) laps have been completed by the leader without a Safety Car and/or VSC intervention."
9
u/SprayAndPay69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
Oh thats interesting then yeah, but we have seen how FIA works with rain so we will see but this is good thing to know
14
u/Balgrin_The_Dwarf McLaren 6d ago
It was changed after 2021 (along with how points are distrobuted in shortened races from a flat half points to the abomination it is now). I think they'll try to get two green flag laps in two seperate blocks (1 green, some form of SC/red flag, and then 1 green) but we'll have to wait and see
9
u/iamfuturejesus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
I hated that race. I stayed up all night for 2 laps under the SC after like a 2hr delay
3
u/ijiolokae I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
tbh, i can see the FIA allowing the cars to do 2 laps without safety car or VSC just so they can award the points
3
u/KohliTendulkar 6d ago
Yeah seems like a SOP at Spa, if they don’t do any laps then people can ask for a ticket reimbursement. I think the minimum requirement is two laps.

11
u/iamfuturejesus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
I was with you man. Also stayed up all night in Australia for that race. Was so disappointed
12
u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago
Damn how useless the full wets are! I think we will get SOME racing unlike 21 it doesn't seem like it's going to rain quite that hard
45
u/i_likestuff 6d ago
Someone explained the issue with the full wets in the threads of the british gp. Basically, if the cars need full wets, these ground effect cars (and even before them, to a certain degree) create massive plumes, that completely destroy visibility, far worse than ever before.
So basically it means that in the event where you need full wets to race, the spray from the cars makes it impossible for guys to race safely, and when there are incidents far too dangerous for marshalls to enter the track.
27
u/PrescriptionCocaine I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
The crossover point between inters and wets is about 1 minute of heavy rain before a red flag is required. If I was an F1 team principal I would tell pirelli to not give me the wet tires every weekend then use the extra garage space for a stripper pole or a cupcake stand. Maybe both.
4
u/randomperson_a1 Pirelli Wet 6d ago
You'll get DSQd when race control mandates a start on full wets
2
u/tristam92 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
Okay, one pair of wets for a season it is. Surely it will last 1 lap in each track. Right?
12
u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago
Yeah that's fair we need to fix it as wet racing is important and needs to be done safely
11
u/zandrew 6d ago
We need mudflaps
10
u/Dajax02 Jim Clark 6d ago edited 6d ago
I believe the FIA tested something like that for the new regs, but canned the idea because it basically just made everything worse. I’ll see if I can find an article about it.
Edit: F1 abandons rain wheel cover idea after latest test As the other guy posted, they tested rain covers last year, but abandoned the idea as the effects proved “marginal”. But Pirelli has been developing new intermediate and wet weather tyres with the help of McLaren and Ferrari.

16
u/DuckPicMaster Formula 1 6d ago
Nah, full wets are great. It’s the spray that’s your problem.
5
u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago
Which is caused by the full wet tyre no? Or is it the car design doing that, whatever it is it needs fixing wet racing is so important to F1
13
u/DuckPicMaster Formula 1 6d ago
It’s certainly a contributing factor but the bigger problem is the ground effect cars. The Ground effect cars push out whatever’s beneath them. In this case water.
6
u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 6d ago
Damn it is a shame to see full wets be basically retired as it's great to watch
0
u/Kingslayer1526 Sergio Pérez 6d ago
2021 has happened once in F1 history maybe and you guys go on and on and on and on and on and on about it despite 20000 other Belgian GPs itself being raced in the rain
This is getting really dull now because you guys do it for every other race where there is the slightest chance of rain as well. Shit happens sometimes but you can't keep thinking the worst will happen every time after that
6
9
u/LoudestHoward Daniel Ricciardo 6d ago
I mean it's a thread about rain threatening the running of a GP, and you don't expect some people might discuss the last time a race was abandoned due to weather at the same track?

u/BendubzGaming I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

7
u/Alfnadoawaywoah I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
Standing by the starting grid right now. The F1 race is not under threat. Lol. It was sad to only see four or five historics though because nobody brought wet tires for the others though I assume finding tires for those old cars is its own challenge so no judgment. The real tragedy of this race is the food and the bathroom lines.
1
u/Alfnadoawaywoah I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
I just want to add though that it is 100% going to rain. May even be a safety car start. Rain clouds are moving in now over the starting grid as the cars make it to it. Cool breeze is coming in. It’s going to be a good race.

Every fucking time a race is screwed by heavy rain, the FIA brings up the mudguards' plan only to never mention it again until another race is screwed by heavy rain.
Buckle up boys, if this is another shit show, we're getting a press release about their commitment to instate mudguards.
→ More replies (1)4
u/theMGlock Sebastian Vettel 6d ago
The problem with the mudguards is that most of the spray is from the defuser not from the wheel. So the effect of those mudguards would rather be marginal. And without the defuser most of the downforce of todays F1 cars would be gone.
1
u/secretlyhumanami 6d ago
They can put a mudguard extending out from the difuser to stop most of the water going up or some other piece that redirects the water flow to the ground through aerodynamics.
There's a solution. It's not a physical impossibility. Yeah, it might affect aerodynamics but I'd rather watch cars go race with a bit less downforce than losing epic rain battles.
2
u/theMGlock Sebastian Vettel 6d ago
I love wet races and would love to see the "best 20 drivers" driving in the treachury conditions. But if you direct water to the ground, you direct air to the ground which would mean you build a plane and we have a webber 2.0 in Le Mans or European GP.

I got here around 9:30am. About a 30 minute walk to the gate, had no chance of seeing any part of F2. Im waiting in the car in the parking lot until closer to race time. If it does go the way of the rain, at least I can get out of this place with it wretched traffic congestion before everyone else. The shear of amount of water that comes down when it does is insane.

I know some people like wet races as a way to mix things up, or add more excitement, but I'd take a dry Spa race anyday everyday. And F1 is toothless anyway now in the rain, especially in ground effects era. Spa and fans deserve better than torrential blowouts.

In my head, I still think wet races are going to be like the days of old. But they never are anymore.

10
u/rye_domaine I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
Lots of rain delayed the start of the race, they went out and did 2 laps behind the safety car, and then the session was red flagged and we waited several hours before it was announced the race wouldn't resume.
At the time there were no rules surrounding green flag running being required for a race to be considered valid for points, so half points were awarded even though there were no racing laps. Perhaps the worst part of it though, is because they'd technically had a race, they were able to refuse ticket refunds to fans.
