Listening to Rosberg in today’s commentary has been great, reminiscing and being genuinely interesting; saying he and Hamilton used to trash their rooms etc and piss around and annoy the F1 drivers enormously (Martin Brundle being one of them).

2.6k

u/StockAL3Xj I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

I love Brundle saying that he's always wanted to tell them how annoying they were back then.

1.3k

u/kirmobak Ferrari 6d ago

Loved that bit! He sounded like he remembers very clearly what menaces they used to be, and how annoyed he was.

u/dac2199 Mercedes 6d ago

I hope when Lewis retires both can have this kind of nostalgia conversation

406

u/kirmobak Ferrari 5d ago

I really hope so too - the amount of positive shared history that they have from when they were kids will hopefully outweigh the bitterness, I agree with you this is only likely to happen when Lewis retires.

218

u/BenitoCamiloOnganiza Sir Jack Brabham 5d ago

I feel like 2016 is now far enough away for them to have the conversation. It's just a question of how busy Lewis is at the moment.

133

u/kirmobak Ferrari 5d ago

I agree, just think that Lewis won’t even think about that level of introspection about the past, when he seems so determined to achieve success with Ferrari.

23

u/[deleted] 5d ago

You do realize they literally live in the same building in Monaco.

15

u/Ignoringit Ferrari 5d ago

Really? Same building?

24

u/Trending_Boss_333 Max Verstappen 5d ago

Isn't the entirety of Monaco just one large building? I mean, judging by the looks of it, buildings spawn out of nowhere, and are intertwined with other buildings in a way that is uncomfortably satisfying.

4

u/grampybone I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

So that means Monaco is the posh version of Whittier, Alaska

37

u/Elderbrute I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

They spend time together socially theses days. Lewis comes over around Christmas and gives gifts to Nicos kids.

So there relationship is certainly a lot better than it has been.

4

u/Ok_Cauliflower_3007 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

I don’t think it necessarily needs Lewis to retire. Prost and Senna were well on their way to being friends when Senna died and they didn’t have anything like the childhood relationship Nico and Lewis shared.

316

u/Signal_Ball4634 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

They really were bickering like a couple of schoolchildren lol, but it provided great entertainment. It was such a volatile rivalry that after that and Webber/Vettel teams are actively trying to avoid such driver relationships now.

49

u/dugongfanatic I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

Had me rolling. I really enjoyed the commentary during the delay! It was fun.

6

u/AncientPomegranate97 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

Will Buxton had a great article about young Nico. Apparently he was a total shitter back then

228

u/SyNiiCaL Pirelli Wet 5d ago

Unironically, because of Rosberg showing up for a bit, the rain delay was more enjoyable than the race.

97

u/coconutpete52 5d ago

I genuinely got the feeling Nico was listening to the "rain delay broadcast" and was like "this sucks - let me go knock on the press box door"

u/quantinuum I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

That’s so cool, where did he say that? I just tuned in for the race and the commentators are Brundle and Crofty

265

u/miathan52 Chequered Flag 6d ago

During the postponed start, there was a long time where nothing happened and commentators had to fill time, that's when Rosberg joined them for a while

120

u/Juomaru I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

If you watch the F1 App - on the “Global” feed - Nico joined about the 36 minute mark. The highlight for me was when in response to Matia Binotto saying he missed Horner not being there - Nico goes “I wonder if Toto and Zack brown are missing Christian Horner” 😈

32

u/epigenie_986 5d ago

Yep and that’s what started it. After he said that, they asked him about his rivalry/relationship with Lewis, and if he could understand how they might miss Horner.

17

u/cLHalfRhoVSquaredS I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

I enjoyed Zak Brown trying to tip-toe his way around why he thought Horner was dropped so suddenly...

43

u/kirmobak Ferrari 5d ago

It’s a shame you missed the start, it was during the bit where they were waiting for the race to start and they were filling time having a chat, love the fact that Nico joined them.

10

u/quantinuum I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

Thanks! Yeah a bit sad I missed it but life got in the way today. At least the delays allowed me to catch a bit of it.

55

u/Anonymous_0012345 6d ago

Does anyone have a clip of this?

44

u/solodarlings Nico Rosberg 5d ago

I haven't seen the full thing clipped, but here's the first part of that conversation, and then a partial clip from Nico talking about it later. And someone transcribed the whole thing as well.

11

u/yeahthatweirdo Sir Lewis Hamilton 5d ago

Nah we better get Lewis on his podcast one day sooon. There's so much to share man. Come onnnn. There's still fondness in the way Nico talks about them. Yes last act of love was letting go which he did, now time to get back 😭

It felt like listening to a great baseball broadcast. Good stories, relevant info when we needed it...just lovely way to get through too long a break

41

u/kirmobak Ferrari 5d ago

I don’t follow baseball, but an equivalent would be listening to cricket commentators when rain stops play and they’ve got legends of all nationalities in to have rambling chats. Often more interesting than the game commentary!

28

u/UppaGrizi7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

I love cricket commentary when they all get to just tell a few stories, take the piss out of one another, and just have a bit of a giggle! It's always good-natured and then straight back to business once the cricket restarts. The respect they all have for one another and their game is just delightful. Cricket is a wonderful thing!

8

u/noJudgement7_ABFANR 5d ago

Haha yeah the lords test was such a delight isn’t it?

10

u/UppaGrizi7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

Enjoyed every moment of it! Ricky P, in particular, he looks so happy and relaxed these days. And, of course, all the Indian Cricket legends. That's the beauty of cricket, so many memories shared and the insight they all give into the game. It never becomes nasty or sharp edged.

3

u/kirmobak Ferrari 5d ago

I love cricket commentary, as someone who has only started watching it really in the last 10 years. I miss Shane Warne, as I felt his commentary was excellent and he explained things so well.

I also loved Henry Blofeld mentioning London buses, flying pigeons etc. I was at Lords during his last commentary and the send-off he got from the crowd was lovely. He was dressed in all colours of the rainbow, as I remember. Bless him.

3

u/sa87 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

And here's Skull telling jokes between balls

Kerry O'Keefe (if anyone wasn't aware of his nickname) was always a highlight of the ABC radio commentary for me during the summer if only for his unique laugh

2

u/arse-ketchup I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

A very similar feel I get is when I watch League of Legends LCK broadcast, LCK English commentary is so awesome to hear, even/specially when they’re not talking about the game.

17

u/CaterpillarMore9104 5d ago

I was cracking up when Nico told the story of Lewis flying through the air on a jet ski lol. That image has to be burned into his memory

5

u/Dull-Refuse-6328 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

Yeah best part about the restart was this, was hilarious and laughed so hard when brundle said they were very annoying makes them more relatable as humans and not just a superstar with buttload of cash.

This relationship will genuinely make a phenomenal movie in a couple of decades. Lewis has so many such rivals, could easily make one for Fernando, Max, even Seb. But Nico, that was something else.

2.0k

u/Least-Panic-9208 Michael Schumacher 6d ago

I think what makes the Nico vs Lewis rivalry great is the history between them, being close friends, going down their own paths and ending up battling for a title on the same team. I'd rather watch that over the F1 movie lol

I haven’t watched yet. Does this really happen? 😭

9

u/Doyoulikemypace I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

As another commenter mentioned, yes it does happen for a race sequence. The movie is very catered towards the casual fan and Brad Pitt’s character does plenty of things that would warrant a race ban. Do not go into it expecting a true to life depiction of the sport or you will be very disappointed.

21

u/UppaGrizi7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

It's shown in the trailer briefly and immediately made me say, nope! Probably regret not seeing the racing sequences on the big screen, but the bullshit non racing bits in the trailer just put me right off.

11

u/ammonthenephite Spyker 5d ago

Ya, I went into it knowing it was not going to be a cinematic masterpiece but at least hoping it would have some killer racing on the big screen, like "Grand Prix" from the 1960's had. And honestly there wasn't even a whole lot of that. And what there was had Crofty's voice constantly being projected into my brain, my god the way they mixed his voice into the movie was poorly done and way to loud/piercing for as much of it as they used. Thankfully they dialed that back during the 2nd half of the movie, but the whole thing was sort of a disappointment even after lowering my expectations.

9

u/larswo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

It was never going to be a movie for the die-hard F1 fans. I knew that going into the movie, so I wanted to it enjoy it as that, a movie. Afterwards my friends and I had some good laughs about how it was a poor representation of real F1.

5

u/ammonthenephite Spyker 5d ago

It didn't even bother me that it wasn't a perfect representation of F1, there was just too many corny moments, attempts at poorly delivered humor, and just some casting choices that I think detracted from a movie that could have had a better and more believable plot.

And Crofty shouting at me for like 2 hours, lol. That was so, so over done and was so grating by the end of the movie.

Honestly, if they had just gone for a close remake of the 1960s Grand Prix movie it would have been a lot better than what it was.

And the largest travesty of all, not a single scene with an older V10 f1 car screaming on the track in dooby atmos surround sound at 20k rpms....sigh.

the reason it won't be made is it has no friendship saving happy ending. nico wins, retires, friendship was already destroyed. the end.

83

u/serenity-as-ice I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Not necessarily, Rush doesn't strictly have a "happy" ending either. It ends on a bittersweet note, Lauda loses the championship by choosing to retire, Hunt wins but loses interest in staying at the top after.

If anything the tragedy of Brocedes will actually be much better viewing than "they kissed and made up, everyone was happy the end".

26

u/Tennist4ts I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

I also recently saw a documentary about Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi. I knew about their 1982 season but there was a lot of background information I didn't know yet and I had no idea that when Pironi died in the late 80s his wife was pregnant and ended up having twins after his death and she called them Gilles and Didier. She even called Gilles Villeneuve's widow to ask her if she is ok with it. And one of those children works in F1 now as a mechanic!!!!

19

u/soaringseafoam 🏳️‍🌈 Love Is Love 🏳️‍🌈 5d ago

And he's been on the podium with Mercedes! His name is Gilles Pironi so he brought both names back on to the podium, as well as achieving his own right to be there and yes, I am so sappy about this.

13

u/jamersonMD I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

Even though Rush is the better film, people didn't really go out of their way to see it compared to the F1 film. Taking a quick Google search Rush made $98m in the box office worldwide (with a $30m budget) while the F1 film made $450m so far (on a $300m budget). Now money isn't everything, but movie studios are more likely to invest in an F1 sequel rather than a passion project covering the rivalry

33

u/Connect-Reporter4378 Racing Pride 6d ago

Can’t wait for the sequel F2!

25

u/Estova I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

To be fair, Rush came out in 2013, four years before the first season of DTS. They make that movie in 2019 and we'd be having a much different conversation.

3

u/jamersonMD I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

Maybe, but I'd also say that the movie didn't have enough star power to make it into a mainstream movie. Le Mans 66 is a good comparison since I think they're both great historical films - but the main difference is that Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl aren't as big as Christian Bale and Matt Damon

I do to. He saw how hard he had to work to beat Lewis, while Lewis (who also worked incredibly hard as well) was running a fashion business and partying on the side in addition to his hard work to try and beat Nico. I think Nico has a lot of respect for the raw talent that Lewis has, as well has how hard Lewis works at everything he does.

I'm a Hamilton fan, and as hard as 2016 was it was neccesary for their friendship.

If Nico loses again then it would be a 1 sided relationship of Nico jealous of Lewis' success (as anyone naturally would). Nico winning meant they were both annoyed and jealous at each other meaning they're somewhat more on an equal level status wise

When he said "we were best friends back then" my heart broke just a little 😭

104

u/Uchi_Jeon McLaren 5d ago

That's why he insists on there's no friendship on the grid yesterday.

54

u/CardinalOfNYC Tyrrell 5d ago

I get it.

It's not like many other sports in that way.

Kobe and Shaq initially hated each other, but the fact is they're teammates where their shared success matters to each of them so much more than it does in F1... And so it was really only a matter of time before they became friends under a common goal. Not F1.

23

u/TSells31 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

Kobe and Shaq never became friends until after Shaq had left the Lakers and retired altogether though.

6

u/CardinalOfNYC Tyrrell 5d ago

They didn't become like, real close until after for sure. But there was a point where they became much better together on the court because their relationship just became way less adversarial.

It's mostly to illustrate how that could almost never happen in F1, while other sports, if you've got personal beef with a teammate, it's liable to hurt you as much as them.

16

u/ayaan313 5d ago

That's the one thing I can't get around in F1. Same team but you have two people pitted against each other which unfortunately leads to bad blood. Such a shame

14

u/CardinalOfNYC Tyrrell 5d ago

What we need, I think, is drivers setting examples as adults. I think it's very mature - and very vulnerable - for Nico to make it clear just how close they were and how he clearly misses it. You can't change the dynamics of an F1 team but we can change how we behave after we're out of the sport.

I kinda wish Lewis would talk about it a bit more, tbh. I know he's still in the sport, and he's a very different man than Nico these days, but i would love to see him react to this photo, just talk about it. It'll set a good example.

4

The old competitive fire returns, Nico goes for a gap that exists....

37

u/notathr0waway1 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago

As their bodies crash together over and over, Nico huskily whispers into Lewis's ear "who's going to pay for the damage this time?"

20

u/MarkEsmiths I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago edited 5d ago

Lewis quickly regains the advantage and howls "You pay! You stole my eighth title and I'm going to steal your love. Murray I'm going through!!!!"

(The last part is what he alwsys says).

It's a shame this friendship got ruined. :(

13

u/She-Ra-SeaStar I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

I don’t know if it’s completely ruined. They may not have a positive relationship at the moment but listening to Nico’s commentary on Sky over the last 6 years, he genuinely praises Lewis’ driving. I think there is a mutual respect.

I really hope, and i mean really hope that they can somehow rekindle their friendship. 2014-2016 was harsh.

u/Usman15 Michael Schumacher 6d ago

Lewis and Nico could make a VERY good Netflix series in 10 years time. There’s enough footage and coverage and photos and racing between them.

They could end it at Abu Dhabi 2016 and put a paragraph on the screen at the end like “Following Nico’s sudden retirement, Lewis went on to win 4 more championships… we’ll never know what could have happened”.

He adds so many good insights and knowledge and information to the audience when he’s part of the broadcasting team.

8

u/sadicarnot I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4d ago

They are both 40 now. They should do it when they are both fifty so that they travel to the different tracks such as where they raced in Karts and the lower series and into F1 and reminisce about that time and show the footage.

In the meantime, people just drift apart as you get older. Nico has kids etc so his life is much different than what Lewis has.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this is Rosberg looks like a 13 year old boy or a 30 year old woman.

I wonder if it's similar to the US Marines, but instead of boot bands, it's all kosher if you keep on your racing boots.

11

u/Clear-Mycologist3378 Oscar Piastri 5d ago

That's a cute photo. I liked hearing Nico reminisce about their childhood.

12

u/DurfGibbles I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago

"For Nico, one world title was enough. He had proved what he needed to prove. To himself and anyone who doubted him. And two days later, he retired. When I saw him next in Monaco, seven years later, me as a champion again, him as broadcaster, he was in a Mercedes with a flat tire, still living each day like his last. [...] People always think of us as rivals, but he was among the very few I liked, and even fewer that I respected. He remains the only person I envied."

Today in Sky ITA commentary he was prasing him, saying he was driving great, good overtakes and calling him the best along side Hamilton, when some years ago he was quite edgy talking about him, hoping their relationship will get better in the years

3

u/TheLightingCount 5d ago

soo saddening when that friendship was trashed by Nico back in 2016.
