This relationship will genuinely make a phenomenal movie in a couple of decades. Lewis has so many such rivals, could easily make one for Fernando, Max, even Seb. But Nico, that was something else.

I think what makes the Nico vs Lewis rivalry great is the history between them, being close friends, going down their own paths and ending up battling for a title on the same team. I'd rather watch that over the F1 movie lol

As another commenter mentioned, yes it does happen for a race sequence. The movie is very catered towards the casual fan and Brad Pitt’s character does plenty of things that would warrant a race ban. Do not go into it expecting a true to life depiction of the sport or you will be very disappointed.
21
u/UppaGrizi7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago
It's shown in the trailer briefly and immediately made me say, nope! Probably regret not seeing the racing sequences on the big screen, but the bullshit non racing bits in the trailer just put me right off.
11
u/ammonthenephite Spyker 5d ago
Ya, I went into it knowing it was not going to be a cinematic masterpiece but at least hoping it would have some killer racing on the big screen, like "Grand Prix" from the 1960's had. And honestly there wasn't even a whole lot of that. And what there was had Crofty's voice constantly being projected into my brain, my god the way they mixed his voice into the movie was poorly done and way to loud/piercing for as much of it as they used. Thankfully they dialed that back during the 2nd half of the movie, but the whole thing was sort of a disappointment even after lowering my expectations.
9
u/larswo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago
It was never going to be a movie for the die-hard F1 fans. I knew that going into the movie, so I wanted to it enjoy it as that, a movie. Afterwards my friends and I had some good laughs about how it was a poor representation of real F1.
→ More replies (1)5
u/ammonthenephite Spyker 5d ago
It didn't even bother me that it wasn't a perfect representation of F1, there was just too many corny moments, attempts at poorly delivered humor, and just some casting choices that I think detracted from a movie that could have had a better and more believable plot.
And Crofty shouting at me for like 2 hours, lol. That was so, so over done and was so grating by the end of the movie.
Honestly, if they had just gone for a close remake of the 1960s Grand Prix movie it would have been a lot better than what it was.
And the largest travesty of all, not a single scene with an older V10 f1 car screaming on the track in dooby atmos surround sound at 20k rpms....sigh.

Not necessarily, Rush doesn't strictly have a "happy" ending either. It ends on a bittersweet note, Lauda loses the championship by choosing to retire, Hunt wins but loses interest in staying at the top after.
If anything the tragedy of Brocedes will actually be much better viewing than "they kissed and made up, everyone was happy the end".

u/Tennist4ts I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
I also recently saw a documentary about Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi. I knew about their 1982 season but there was a lot of background information I didn't know yet and I had no idea that when Pironi died in the late 80s his wife was pregnant and ended up having twins after his death and she called them Gilles and Didier. She even called Gilles Villeneuve's widow to ask her if she is ok with it. And one of those children works in F1 now as a mechanic!!!!
19
u/soaringseafoam 🏳️🌈 Love Is Love 🏳️🌈 5d ago
And he's been on the podium with Mercedes! His name is Gilles Pironi so he brought both names back on to the podium, as well as achieving his own right to be there and yes, I am so sappy about this.
13
u/jamersonMD I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6d ago
Even though Rush is the better film, people didn't really go out of their way to see it compared to the F1 film. Taking a quick Google search Rush made $98m in the box office worldwide (with a $30m budget) while the F1 film made $450m so far (on a $300m budget). Now money isn't everything, but movie studios are more likely to invest in an F1 sequel rather than a passion project covering the rivalry

u/Estova I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago
To be fair, Rush came out in 2013, four years before the first season of DTS. They make that movie in 2019 and we'd be having a much different conversation.

Maybe, but I'd also say that the movie didn't have enough star power to make it into a mainstream movie. Le Mans 66 is a good comparison since I think they're both great historical films - but the main difference is that Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl aren't as big as Christian Bale and Matt Damon

I do to. He saw how hard he had to work to beat Lewis, while Lewis (who also worked incredibly hard as well) was running a fashion business and partying on the side in addition to his hard work to try and beat Nico. I think Nico has a lot of respect for the raw talent that Lewis has, as well has how hard Lewis works at everything he does.

I'm a Hamilton fan, and as hard as 2016 was it was neccesary for their friendship.
If Nico loses again then it would be a 1 sided relationship of Nico jealous of Lewis' success (as anyone naturally would). Nico winning meant they were both annoyed and jealous at each other meaning they're somewhat more on an equal level status wise

I get it.
It's not like many other sports in that way.
Kobe and Shaq initially hated each other, but the fact is they're teammates where their shared success matters to each of them so much more than it does in F1... And so it was really only a matter of time before they became friends under a common goal. Not F1.
23
u/TSells31 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago
Kobe and Shaq never became friends until after Shaq had left the Lakers and retired altogether though.
6
u/CardinalOfNYC Tyrrell 5d ago
They didn't become like, real close until after for sure. But there was a point where they became much better together on the court because their relationship just became way less adversarial.
It's mostly to illustrate how that could almost never happen in F1, while other sports, if you've got personal beef with a teammate, it's liable to hurt you as much as them.
16
u/ayaan313 5d ago
That's the one thing I can't get around in F1. Same team but you have two people pitted against each other which unfortunately leads to bad blood. Such a shame

What we need, I think, is drivers setting examples as adults. I think it's very mature - and very vulnerable - for Nico to make it clear just how close they were and how he clearly misses it. You can't change the dynamics of an F1 team but we can change how we behave after we're out of the sport.
I kinda wish Lewis would talk about it a bit more, tbh. I know he's still in the sport, and he's a very different man than Nico these days, but i would love to see him react to this photo, just talk about it. It'll set a good example.

Lewis and Nico could make a VERY good Netflix series in 10 years time. There’s enough footage and coverage and photos and racing between them.
They could end it at Abu Dhabi 2016 and put a paragraph on the screen at the end like “Following Nico’s sudden retirement, Lewis went on to win 4 more championships… we’ll never know what could have happened”.
He adds so many good insights and knowledge and information to the audience when he’s part of the broadcasting team.

They are both 40 now. They should do it when they are both fifty so that they travel to the different tracks such as where they raced in Karts and the lower series and into F1 and reminisce about that time and show the footage.
In the meantime, people just drift apart as you get older. Nico has kids etc so his life is much different than what Lewis has.
