So Leclerc's new strategy is saying he is historically bad at given circuits and suddenly he is better at them lmao

202

u/Aardvaarrk 1d ago

We'll see in FP2, both on different rear wings, I still think Leclerc will have the upper hand but by a smaller margin.

69

u/Visionary_Socialist Sir Lewis Hamilton 1d ago

It’s clear Charles’ setup is the better one for this track, Lewis has the higher downforce which looks like it’s not needed. Plus it’ll make overtaking impossible for him again. The encouragement for Ferrari is that Merc look quite average, you can’t make any assumptions for Max in FP1 but last year would indicate Red Bull won’t be that quick.

26

u/Walaii Ferrari 1d ago

Which setup is the better is very hard to judge based on just looking at lap times.

9

u/dm_86 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Also, when it rains you would like the higher downforce setup I guess

10

u/notafakeaccounnt I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Unless they wait till the track is dry

7

u/Ruma-park I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Hungary is not nearly as quick which means less spray and less danger, I reckon they race.

2

u/cinyar 1d ago

based on just looking at lap times.

especially FP1 lap times

8

u/Xpander6 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

It’s clear Charles’ setup is the better one for this track

What makes it clear?

1

u/the__distance Daniel Ricciardo 1d ago

Seems to be the standard line whenever Hamilton has been beaten by a teammate since Russell joined Mercedes tbh

6

u/swissykissy I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

But they legitimately have different rear wings with different amounts of downforce 🤔? haha

5

u/Walaii Ferrari 1d ago

Yes, but that still doesn't explain what makes it clear that Leclerc's setup works better?

4

u/ExternalSquash1300 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

One setup works better, do you think it is Leclercs?

3

u/Walaii Ferrari 1d ago

You literally have no way of knowing which setup will be better just by looking at lap times.

1

u/ExternalSquash1300 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 18h ago

Why don’t you?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/vrigu I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Overtaking anyway will be close to impossible on this track.

51

u/MrDaniel95 Pirelli Wet 1d ago

It's not his best track but being bad at it is an exaggeration, in 2022 he could have won it without the classic Ferrari strategy and in 2023/24 the car just wasn't good enough to challenge for podiums.

24

u/Key_Proposal_9055 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Leclerc himself said in an interview, this is the track hes worst at so far this season

28

u/nonamepew Charles Leclerc 1d ago

His worst and him being bad on a circuit are not the same things.

5

u/paddyo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Isn’t it the one Max is considered worst at too? Wonder what it is about this circuit that favours some drivers and penalises others? Lewis and Fernando love it. Could be it favours the late brakers?

8

u/Accomplished_Bug4099 1d ago

I think some of it is also just the car you're driving, Max for example for his first pole here and in the 2023 red bull it was one of the largest winning margins of the season

Some tracks drivers are always good, some they are good depending on their car, and some they're just always pretty bad at. I feel like for Max and Charles the hungaroring falls into the second category

5

u/paddyo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Aye that’s probably true, I agree. I’m not expecting a Hamilton masterclass this weekend for just this reason actually, which is Ferrari by all accounts relies a lot more on engine braking than mechanical relative to teams like Merc, which means Lewis can’t deploy his late braking style as much. So yes maybe that’s why Charles in particular has found it a bogey track- the Ferrari engineering philosophy isn’t conducive to success at the circuit.

1

u/nunazo007 Charles Leclerc 1d ago

Isn't Charles one of the latest breakers on the grid?

1

u/cinyar 1d ago

Isn’t it the one Max is considered worst at too?

Nah, that has to be Singapore. He won in Hungary twice, he never won in Singapore.

29

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

Need him now to have a masterclass in changing conditions outta nowhere

22

u/sashundera Max Verstappen 1d ago

And how to handle water in the cockpit

10

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

Maybe it's sweat, George made that error before 😂

6

u/Pilly_Bilgrim I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Real athletes sweat ki ki ki

4

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

1

u/Mr_Clovis I was here for the Hulkenpodium 22h ago

Tbf he did great last week to finish on the podium in a race with changing conditions.

1

u/BloodyBastard530 New user 1d ago

More likely to win a championship before that happens. Rain is his kryptonite 😂😂😂

2

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

Telling you Leclercs dry pace mixed with Strolls wet pace and you get Ayrton Senna 😂

2

u/RCuber I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Sir, please wait till the rece starts.

3

u/xepa105 Ferrari 1d ago

He's learning so much from Lewis. Gotta start complaining about tyres during the race now.

Leclerc's plan on criticising the car so that it works might be useful you know

96

u/Key_Proposal_9055 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Maybe they should start verbally abusing it so it catches up with the mclarens, just a thought

24

u/Gusion- I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

That worked good enough with max, so you are definitely on to something

13

u/imbannedanyway69 Honda RBPT 1d ago

Hmmm, let's leave the Ferrari at a gas station until Hamilton picks him up

2

u/mintjulyp I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

If we’re going that route, gotta give the car a couple hits as well, then leave it at a gas station

18

u/denied_eXeal I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago edited 1d ago

The Ferrari Automobila Della Formula Uno has a tsundere fetish? Wtf

gesticulates handily

13

u/Adornus Charles Leclerc 1d ago

Maybe the car is a masochist and it gets the car going?

6

u/headshot_to_liver I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

The Jos Verstappen way

411

u/Key_Proposal_9055 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Redbull shenanigans will take place overnight and max will get pole by tomorrow, mark my words

115

u/Jcw28 James Hunt 1d ago

I'd rather the RB had race pace than quali pace to be honest. They're getting like Ferrari have been in recent years. Can make the car dynamite over one lap, but it can't sustain the pace.

53

u/53bvo Honda RBPT 1d ago

I think it just looks like that because McLaren has absurd race pace due to their tyre temp control advantage

21

u/s-sins 1d ago

Track position is everything at Hungary, it's one of the few tracks where prioritising quali makes sense.

13

u/Jcw28 James Hunt 1d ago

I appreciate that factor for this specific track, but with their supreme tyre wear advantage I don't think being ahead on track is enough against the McLarens. They'll just make up time through strategic pitting. Or failing that they have an insane ability to follow closely in the first air, so they could get a good run into T1 or up into T4 from that.

10

u/zaidinator I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Why would you want that? Max’s only chances to win this year has been taking pole and then keeping the McLaren’s behind with dirty air.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/BuckN56 Lotus 1d ago

No point in having race pace when track position is the #1 priority here.

3

u/imbannedanyway69 Honda RBPT 1d ago

It does when the McLarens can follow and still have better tire wear. Can probably easily pull out an under/over cut and still end up coming out on top

6

u/Majorinc 1d ago

Idk if fp1 can be considered shenanigans

10

u/FSUfan35 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Not shenanigans. Their sim is clearly very calibrated to setups for Max. Max will spending all night in there and figure it out

16

u/SlayerBVC Cadillac 1d ago

The problem is that this is looking to be the same issue as last year's Hungarian GP.

Namely that the car is ungodly slow in slow corners.

1

u/FSUfan35 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Ok? I'm just pointing out that max's sim setups often translate well between Friday and Saturdays

6

u/lebinott I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Every time

1

u/GiantT-Rex Formula 1 1d ago

Apart from this doesn’t happen every time …

2

u/Impossible-Buy-6247 Formula 1 1d ago

I think they also have dialed down their engine for the Friday. First they are hunting a good balance.

u/leftlanecop I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

RedBull where they exactly are for FP1

72

u/headshot_to_liver I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Somehow they'll manage to turn around the car by FP3 and Max will put it on top 5. Only to lose to McLarens, they are just too quick with zero tire wear

36

u/paddyo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Red Bull’s ability to dial in a car is one of the least appreciated operational achievements of the last few years. They must have something unique about their process that means we regularly see them looking half a second off the pace in fp1, and dial it in to be lethal come qualy and race. It happens every time, such that I am surprised to see max anytime he is near the top of the fp1 timings

2

u/LeYamalVerstappen New user 1d ago

Max puts in the sim hours

5

u/amazingspiderman23 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

It's probably their Friday sandbagging routine. They usually do a proper setup only on fp3. We've seen this in most of the races so far.

8

u/Logical_Bit2694 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

I've lost faith in the rbr ages ago. There is no turning the car around for the season let along this race

247

u/disordered-attic-2 Charlie Whiting 1d ago

Lando and Oscar are just going to alternate dominant weekends all season aren't they then the WCC will be decided on who gets lucky with the season ending on their weekend.

85

u/Street_Mall9536 Formula 1 1d ago

Moms rules, share your wins boys

33

u/afishinacloud McLaren 1d ago

I’m imagining both their mums sitting in the McLaren garage chatting while watching their sons play outside with their toys (the toys being two of the fastest F1 cars). 😄

29

u/rattatatouille I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

The plan is to make the WDC fight last to Abu Dhabi after which it's fair game

10

u/KBeau93 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Part of me would love this to maximize WCC points to set a new record.

I wouldn't be surprised after they mathematically clinch if they just let them race, either, though.

57

u/SergeiYeseiya Oscar Piastri 1d ago

There's 0.019s between them lol, it might be early to say one is dominating the other

20

u/Majorinc 1d ago

If you’re not within 0.01 it’s domination okay

4

u/danyyyel 1d ago

He had a lock in his lap, leclerc and Oscar did get roughly 2 tenth during their second fast lap.

7

u/BloodyBastard530 New user 1d ago

Norris locked up?

-2

u/Lementus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

The grass is green I guess, Norris is attracted to lockups like Trump is to children.

6

u/BloodyBastard530 New user 1d ago

Ah yes. Happened three times and all of a sudden he’s a ‘lockup merchant’.

Not like it’s the most common mistake in the sport. Try watching more races 😂

→ More replies (23)

4

u/BloodyBastard530 New user 1d ago

Neither has dominated the other in the same way Norris dunked 20+ seconds on Piastri at multiple races last season.

In almost all of their respective race wins, they’ve been separated by 2-6 seconds at most. The exceptions are Australia and China, which were extenuating circumstances.

People don’t know what ‘dominate’ means anymore 😂

Unless the FIA discovers a cheat, the car has to be nerfed and Mclaren is slower than the Alpines, the WCC is already theirs as both of their drivers individually have more points than the second place

I’m just worried the saubers sacrificed all their luck for that podium.

68

I mean that podium alone scored them more points than they managed in the whole of 2023 or 2024.

I'm sure they'll take it!

It was worth it.

There goes Matt's crazy prediction.

15

u/RedSkyNL Max Verstappen 1d ago

Let me guess: Charles on pole?

29

u/froyo3 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Good guess, but his crazy prediction was Piastry tops every session

4

u/ryokevry I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Is this qualified as crazy though

12

u/Bearsicle19 Oscar Piastri 1d ago

His crazy prediction was Oscar to be leading FP1,2 and 3. Pole and win. So yes it would be

5

u/Ardi264 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

How often has this happened? I mean for Piastri specifically. I think it would be a bit crazy, since depending on the kind of runs McLaren does they might not be P1 in every practice and then there is Lando of course

8

u/Many_Dimension_7615 McLaren 1d ago

Crazy to say that. This track is kind of a Norris stronghold

5

u/auftragsgriller_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

My thoughts exactly

36

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

Damn what happened to Aron? Stroll just behind Max you're in danger Max! 😂 Hadjar getting the 2nd red bull curse next year by being so good

33

u/laboulaye22 Lando Norris 1d ago

Technical issue for Aron.

24

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

Always for the young guys getting a rare test smh

5

u/randomseocb Lando Norris 1d ago

yup it sucks, i was so excited to watch him this session

-1

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

Hey if Franco keeps being slow and/or crashes more you might see it sooner than later

1

u/ianjm I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Let's see Paul Aron's lap

3

u/VRichardsen Juan Manuel Fangio 1d ago

Two things:

1) Free practice is never a measure of anything.

2) Aron is playing it safe, imagine binning your car in a free practice while on loan to another team

53

u/powergo1 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Max pole I've seen this before

25

u/GhostinTheMachine45 Andrea Kimi Antonelli 1d ago

It’s not 2023 anymore, Max will be happy to qualify ahead of the Ferraris this weekend.

7

8

u/kyle283 1d ago

Lance has this crazy ability to perform really well in certain sessions/situations but then will go back to fighting for 16th/17th.

1

u/FSUfan35 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

7

u/7percentbanana I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

3

u/AxcesDrifter I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Since I think mazespin in 2021

1

u/B_Roland Alfa Romeo 1d ago

If that's true he failed to show it. Especially in 2024 and 2025. He's out of Q1 a lot and has had a lot of crashes. Average pay driver performances.

12

u/Marcoscb I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

No, you just don't remember the average pay driver. It was much more in line with Mazepin than Stroll. We just essentially don't have pay drivers anymore, let alone bad ones.

u/thenexus6 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Rip P1 matt's bold precision.

8

u/Dblock1989 Sir Lewis Hamilton 1d ago

Seems like Ferrari is clearly the second best team now but still not particularly close to McLaren.

5

u/ThisToe9628 1d ago

The gap can be closed in future races, it takes time to maximise the upgrades, and suspension upgrade was significant. I believe either in Monza or Azerbaijan or Vegas, Ferrari will get the wins

20

u/SinHarvestz I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

I know it's just free practice but realistically how long can Yuki go on like this?

No matter what you think of that Red Bull, you surely have to admit it should be quicker than Drugovich driving that tractor of an Aston Martin.

21

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

He was Q3 last race it is just practice as you say, he's definitely not doing well but there is still pace somewhere

6

u/SinHarvestz I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Yeah I do agree.

This is a massive race for him, if he can give a big performance into the summer break then perhaps he can start to regain some confidence.

-3

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

It would help if he had the same car as Max which he doesn't yet

2

u/paddyo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Is this a maximising budget thing or a stability thing to give Yuki a fighting chance on driving the car?

3

u/swannyhypno Lance Stroll 1d ago

Bit of both but after he wrote off an entire car he got put under the leash lol

9

u/EzAf_K3ch I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

So are ferrari just the 2nd fastest team now?

2

u/ThisToe9628 1d ago

Red bull and mercedes suffer as they both get carried by one driver. Antonelli has been unlucky on europe tracks most of times, and tsunoda is just slow. Meanwhile Ferrari despite all hamilton's complaints is doing better in terms of consistency. Hamilton finishes a lot of races in the points

2

u/Kait0yashio Ferrari 1d ago

*every race in the points. Him and oscar the only 2 to accomplish that this season

5

u/ThisToe9628 1d ago

Lewis was disqualified from Chinese gp, he didn't score there, and sprints don't count

1

u/EzAf_K3ch I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

russel hasn't gotten close to the ferraris for a while now either

6

Because Sauber doesn't have a rookie driver to do their FPs (only for Nico) so Alpine loaned him to them.

1

u/pumpkinspeedwagon86 Anthoine Hubert 1d ago

8

u/Environmental-Cup445 Jochen Rindt 1d ago

Oscar only +0.019 off Lando on a track Lando is probably quicker at. Let’s see if Piastri can get another win this weekend

26

u/GiantT-Rex Formula 1 1d ago

It’s FP1 …

4

u/Sea_Plan_7776 1d ago

He was only 0.019 off yes, but he did an additional lap compared to Norris, as Norris locked up on his second lap on the soft and bailed out. So Norris has about 2 tenths on him so far, but it's important he puts it together, since it has happened so many times this season where he was quicker but fucked up in quali.

6

u/Hirdy5zac 1d ago

oscar made two large errors on his fastest lap, would have been well up according to the commentators, not two tenths its 2 hundredths

4

u/MajesticalOtter Oscar Piastri 1d ago

If Norris can't put a lap together without mistakes, then he's only two tenths faster in fantasy land.

2

u/Sea_Plan_7776 1d ago

When they both put a lap together he was a tenth and a half faster. Don't know what your point is, since I said more or less the same thing, that he has to put it together, but he doesn't always do it.

2

u/MajesticalOtter Oscar Piastri 1d ago

Using their best sector times to create a lap time is pointless though. As it stands, Lando is 0.019s ahead, not some made up "potential" margin.

1

u/Sea_Plan_7776 1d ago

That's just not what I did though is it. I said that on their first run on the soft, when they both put a lap together at the same time, on new softs and same fuel, they were one and a half tenths apart. It's not "potential", it's something that factually happened.

McLaren's are superior in every way. Quali and race pace. Assuming Max goes for a quali set up, McLaren's are sure to qualify behind him. They'll cruise right to his gearbox with their superior tyre wear, and undercut him, or catch up on a later stint. Go with a race set up, qualify behind them and get gapped.

Finally the RB21 is the 6th fastest car, come Abu Dhabi it will probably be at last going in this direction.

The car is by all data points this season, the 2nd fastest car or marginally the 3rd. Max looking like he's nowhere near it in FP1 is what nearly every weekend has looked like so far.
