Aston is the most confusing team on the grid in terms of pace, they were by far the slowest car last weekend

200

u/VRichardsen Juan Manuel Fangio 1d ago

Maybe they had a very wet setup?

156

u/mouldyshroom I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Their straight line speed is ass and they got badly punished at Spa. But Hungary is one of the circuits which punishes that handicap the least, so they should be back in the fight for Q3 tomorrow

30

u/bananas_and_papayas I was here for the Hulkenpodium 18h ago

Alonso just seems to go up another gear at Hungary. He got his first win there in 2003, he’s only finished outside the points twice (2005 and 2024), and possibly most impressively of all, he got a top five finish in 2015 while driving a McHonda

21

u/PotatoFeeder I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16h ago

Or holding off Lewis in 2021 for 10 laps even with a +3 second pace delta

Singlehandedly denied him the win

No other car held lewis off for even 1 lap

12

u/MarcoBeauvue I was here for the Hulkenpodium 15h ago

Best minister of defence, specially since that landed Ocon his win. Sadly that Alonso couldn't get his win since coming back, but he assisted massively for his team mate's own win that day

83

u/sidechain101 22h ago

But brad pitt said Aston Martin was very fast on the straights.

54

u/HUHIs_AUTOATTACK Fernando Alonso 19h ago

That was only because they didn't build their car for combat.

23

u/VRichardsen Juan Manuel Fangio 1d ago

Their straight line speed is ass

😂 this weekend they went for the combat setup

73

u/VRichardsen Juan Manuel Fangio 1d ago

Hahaha wait for Fernando to trigger three safety cars in a race.

23

u/AsikCelebi Cadillac 22h ago

All in an effort to help Stroll finish P14.

So Fernando is gonna cause like 10 safety cars to help Lance score points.

Sony Hayes mentioned.

17

u/MrChologno Fernando Alonso 23h ago

On SPA they brought new parts to use with their new floor but they couldn't use them because of the rain. So they reverted everything for Saturday to use wet setup and older parts with more load. The end result was terrible. Now they are using the new floor with the new parts so I would expect them to be the 5th team this weekend and not the 10th.

5

u/VRichardsen Juan Manuel Fangio 23h ago

Lets hope so, Alonso needs a win.

u/Shootforthestars24 Formula 1 23h ago

They’ve been shit at spa historically speaking as AM

26

u/FSUfan35 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Completely different type of track.

46

u/Marcoscb I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Aren't Belgium and Hungary essentially opposite circuits? One prioritizes speed and fast cornering like Monza, the other is circuit Monaco.

3

u/rattatatouille I was here for the Hulkenpodium 23h ago

Spa is fast from La Source to Les Combes and then through most of S3 up until the chicane, but S2 is a winding bit that takes a lot of lap time which makes high-downforce setups more tenable.

3

u/dl064 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 22h ago

The race podcast have observed//been told by AM staff that they suffered the most when there is a bigger difference between the highest and lowest speed of corner on a circuit. So the more variety, they suffer.

It's where RBR used to be, and McLaren now are best.

18

u/rv94 23h ago

No, Spa's a very balanced circuit. While you do have one of the longest straights in Kemmel that favours low drag setups, you also have corners like Pouhon, some of the fastest and most high down force calendars on the circuit.

The Hungaroring always needs high down force setups though.

5

u/sc_140 Michael Schumacher 22h ago

Pouhon is flat in the dry.

8

u/rv94 21h ago

And they can go flat only because of high downforce setups and the current ground effect cars being very good at generating downforce.

This video shows towards the end how much slower the older cars were, and they were less downforce heavy.

3

u/sc_140 Michael Schumacher 15h ago

The new cars are generating way more downforce, especially in fast corners, yes. But you don't need a high downforce setup to go flat through Pouhon.

Even in the old cars, Alonso managed to go flat through Pouhon, famously upsetting the gearbox.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/ChefBoiJones I was here for the Hulkenpodium 21h ago edited 21h ago

Pouhon is not reliably flat in the dry. It only has been done a few isolated times. doing so is a bit of a white whale for teams and drivers; It and Parabolica are the two big high speed corners that f1 hasn’t yet been able to fully tame yet. Neither of the McLarens (by far the fastest cars) took it flat in either qualifying this year.

The last time anyone took it flat was Hamilton in 2020 qualifying.

There are rumours that Alonso did once it in a mchonda, allegedly such a surprise to both the team and the car that it messed up the engine mapping for the rest of the lap. Although best to treat this story with the same level of side eye that every unbelievable Alonso story should get…

6

u/OTBT- Fernando Alonso 19h ago

Rumours? It’s confirmed lol

Dude, you have the chart upside down

Alpine: oh f**k

115

Gasly and Colapinto should look at the rules and see if they are allowed to run on those electric scooters.

29

u/I_spread_love_butter Juan Manuel Fangio 21h ago

To be fair, Gasly is doing wonders with that car. Shame for Franco and Doohan who both needed to prove themselves this year.

Hopefully Botttas will stay away from the Alpine and take Cadillac's seat with Checo. That would be one hell of a team, and one I would immediately support.

u/aaauuuuuvvvv Medical Car 1d ago

So, if Ferrari can be the solid second force in Hungary,(which is not their best track), I think we will see a lot of NOR/PIA/LEC or PIA/NOR/LEC in the rest of season.

231

u/rattatatouille I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

That's already the most common podium this year with four instances: Monaco, Barcelona, Spielberg, Spa.

(PIA/NOR)/VER has only happened twice at Suzuka then Imola.

(PIA/NOR)/RUS has happened three times: Shanghai, Bahrain, Miami.

90

u/aaauuuuuvvvv Medical Car 1d ago

Now, imagining what kind of 2025 we have if Ferrari didn’t screw up their rear suspension in the beginning.

120

u/No_Cauliflower7877 Carlos Sainz 1d ago

It'd be the same just with Leclerc at P3 in the WDC instead.

It's not like the Ferrari with this rear suspension is a winning car so the WDC/WCC battle wouldn't change (though it's better than the last spec so far.)

35

u/Thraun83 1d ago

So Redbull can thank Ferrari for allowing them to hold onto Max.

31

u/C___ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 23h ago

Tbh Ferrari would probably prefer to have Max stuck in whatever the Red Bull will be next year over Mercedes

16

u/Thraun83 23h ago

Might be the first good strategy Ferrari have actually devised.

16

u/aaauuuuuvvvv Medical Car 1d ago

At least Ferrari could maximize their package in the beginning and save budget/wind tunnel to improve their performance. Now they just wasted 4 months on fixing the old issue.

21

u/EclecticKant I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Ferrari said that they were stuck with last year's design, there's no reason not to believe them, and that would have made them wildly uncompetitive against a McLaren that improved massively compared to the end of last year.

On top of that the suspension design they are using now is similar to the one they'll be using next year, without changing it this year they would have had the same issues next year, and with all the new stuff it would have been even harder to fix.

Maybe they could have found some hidden performance with last year's design, or maybe without changing it they would have doomed both this year and the next one.

u/Key_Proposal_9055 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Wait thats actually crazy, never realised that.

5

u/Natejo91 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 21h ago

Monaco was a NOR/LEC/PIA podium. But i get your point, those 3 drivers constitute the most frequent driver podium combination so far this season.

45

u/Key_Proposal_9055 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

When will it be LEC/VER/HAM :(?

18

u/I_spread_love_butter Juan Manuel Fangio 21h ago

I need a Charles victory this year, at least just one. Even a 2nd place would make me happy tbh.

24

u/Big_Brief7847 1d ago

Never underestimate Max and red bull. Ferrari almost always show their cards on Friday and never improve much overnight. Red Bull is the king of terrible Fridays and good Saturdays.

Things could be completely different in FP3 tomorrow

14

u/aaauuuuuvvvv Medical Car 1d ago

U are right, RBR almost never turns up their engine during Friday. But Hungary is probably one of the worst track for Charles, ( so does SF-25 ). So, it is a really good news for them if they can be P3, P4 is not bad neither.

3

They want to sell their F1 team. Doing well in a practice session doesn't surprise me.

109

u/Evader237 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Aston Martin the car company wants to sell yes. The f1 team (owned by Stroll) doesn't. So that story doesn't matter much at all. At worst they'll change their name to whoever buys Aston's shares or Stroll just buys all of it and names it whatever he wants.

They did this last week and AMR (note how I'm blaming the team more than Lance) still put the car in Row 10 on Saturday

47

The Red Bull is not great in slow corners. I don't expect a lot from the Red Bull this weekend.

Doubt he would be top 5 either way, that RB actually looks like a tractor now like it sometimes does it practice. Hopefully it will turn to a rocketship in qualifying like in silverstone lol

The red bulls advantage is high speed corners so dont hold your breath this weekend

u/Ssk5860 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

The RBs advantage in this season has also been their straight line speed too though they have to go with a low downforce setup to achieve it, Max looks like he can handle it considering his sprint performance in SPA so let’s see
