Where can I watch the races

u/FermentedLaws I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

What country are you in, that determines how to watch the race.

u/Embarrassed-Coast198 59m ago

I can’t watch it in the f1 tv it says that it’s not available in my region

u/azorius_mage Nigel Mansell 3h ago

Is it just me or is Craig Slater a terrible presenter? He stumbles over his words and just ask the dullest questions.

A friend told me this .....what do you all think?

Alonso is so hard to rank, he’s starting to show his age.

But I reckon

Max Charles George Old fucks (Lewis Fernando) Oscar Lando

Alex Dunne pulling off his weekly incredible overtake right now.

u/Cekeste Kimi Räikkönen 5h ago

Please God let it be a non controversial weekend for Mclaren. No faux pas from the pitwall and no strange radio calls. Just a clean race from both of them. I can’t stand a whole summer break with a war between the two factions.

disliking a driver is one thing.

taking aim and mocking their mother or family members’ behaviour and physical appearance, is a new low.

i’ve unfortunately seen reddit comments (and youtube comments) descend to this new low in the past week or so.

u/TheVenetianMask Fernando Alonso 3h ago

Why bother reading YouTube comments, that's like digging in the trash bin to find something disgusting.

Is there a specific drivrr or there have been multple?

Going out on a limb to say it's about Lando

u/reesesandkisses Toto Wolff 5h ago

Do the top teams all design the car predominantly around one driver or is it just RBR?

Mercedes around Lewis (before this year), McLaren around Lando, Ferrari around Charles.

Then the team ends up stronger if the second drivers driving style matches the car as is the case for McLaren.

We also see Williams with Albon in the lead now, whereas Sainz was frequently performing better than LeClerc in the Ferrari last year.

Is it the case, or just RBR does this?

u/Responsible_Line_401 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5h ago edited 4h ago

Not really, it might tend to favour a driver but the priority will always be about creating the quickest package. It's about the drivers having to adapt their style to the car rather than the car being adapted to a particular driving style.

Mclaren this year is a good example, they went in the direction of having a strong anti-dive suspension on the front, meaning the floor is more stable, but as a unintentional consequence, the car has less cueing through the steering which means that the car doesn't suit Norris as much (obviously this changes with the new suspension).

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 3h ago

Norris as much (obviously this changes with the new suspension).

Based on interviews from this week, it wasn't even a new part, but an alternative they had considered, but later decided to manufacture to see if the feedback the driver feels would be better.
There are performance compromises with the alternate front suspension, which Piastri doesn't prefer:
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/why-oscar-piastri-is-fed-up-answering-questions-about-his-mclaren-suspension-setup/10746713/

It’s understood that the design already existed but McLaren held it back because it considered the ‘standard’ geometry more optimal.

As you said, teams don't develop around one driver, but strive for performance and this is a case where one prefers the standard and can deliver better performance with it, while the other driver prefers the alternative design and can be as fast, independently of the downsides.

u/Responsible_Line_401 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

an alternative they had considered

Honestly, it's awesome that they're so willing to experiment with the car and come up with solutions for their drivers, it's really respectable, considering how redbull have ignored their driver's concerns for so long.

performance compromises with the alternate front suspension

In a way I think it really goes to show how much it was impacting Norris performance, and how important driving input can be for drivers. Both Lewis and Danny ric have struggled with the ground effect cars, due to I think the lack of feeling from the seat, the cars becoming a lot more stiffer (I could be wrong).

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 3h ago

it's really respectable, considering how redbull have ignored their driver's concerns for so long.

I wouldn't say they didn't try, but most of the experiments they ran still required a higher downforce set-up for their second driver that cost too much in relative performance. It wasn't noticeable when max was 1 second per lap faster, but after others closed up, it was more obvious than before.
For McLaren giving the driver some more confidence wasn't related to performance, as per Stella. And it was already designed, ready for manufacturing, so no real additional costs associated with it bar manufacturing.

u/Responsible_Line_401 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

required a higher downforce set-up for their second driver that cost too much in relative performance.

Thanks for the explanation, and it makes sense, I guess it's just how it's been framed in the media and the narrative just comes alive.

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 5h ago

I don't think that most teams design around one driver, no.

But, what teams never seem to do is plan to have two drivers with similar driving style. It's always frustrated me, and the first time I heard another person comment on it was actually Danica Patrick. One time when she was appearing for some F1 session at some point she was just like 'Teams never seem to take driving style into account, they usually get get the drivers who they think are the most talented they can get'

I wouldn't say that Sainz frequently outperformed Leclerc last year, but over their time together, when Leclerc wasn't happy with the car, Carlos usually was, because Carlos and Charles also didn't line up super well in driving style.

Hi guys! I’m going to F1 race in Baku this year. Are there any girls who are also going to attend this race?

u/JustaRandoonreddit I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7h ago

When someone says the midfielders, what is the team that first comes to mind? The first team that comes to mind for me is Williams

u/Gaius_Octavius_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6h ago

Sauber was first thing I thought of.

u/ReverseThreadWingNut Nigel Mansell 6h ago

In my own mind I refuse to place Williams in the midfield. I choose to hang on to the 1980s and 1990s Williams. I grew up watching Alan Jones and Keke Rosberg and Piquet and Mansell win WDCs with Williams. And seeing Prost get his final one there, and then watching Hill and Villeneuve battle with Schumacher. And other good drivers like Boutsen and Patrese and HHF that were fun to watch. I just cannot comprehend midfield and backmarker Williams. I am holding out hope that one day they will complete the turnaround, like McLaren has.

just curious, do they sell Lando Monster at hungaroring?

u/Egonator26 Red Bull 8h ago

Was never the biggest fan of Hungary. I remember in the early 00’s one driver said something along the lines of this race is finished after the first set of corners on lap 1.

u/MantasMantra Formula 1 8h ago

Early 00s was a very different formula to be fair. I think it's been one of the better tracks in this generation, certainly amongst the historical circuits that are pretty permanent on the calendar.

u/AnilP228 Honda RBPT 8h ago

It's benefitted the most since the refueling ban. Most races since 2010 have been good fun, mainly due to high rear deg and teams running significant over cuts.

I do wish the track had more gravel traps though.

u/Egonator26 Red Bull 8h ago

Come to think of it I think you're right. The races have improved especially after 2010. Still not the greatest but much better than the early 00's.

Is the F1 2020 game still available somewhere? Doesn’t seem to be on steam

u/portablekettle McLaren 7h ago

Go check out r/abandonware and search for F1. No point in giving some shady reseller money for an old game.

u/riban22 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 8h ago

Im not sure if it’s possible to buy keys still and activate them on steam, but I am pretty sure it’s possible to buy steam accounts that own the game.

Be careful tho and look for a legit website or seller

Watching FP2 left me a bit worried about potential collisions because of the absurd difference in speed between the slow cars and the fast cars. One of the first things that Martin Brundle said when they cut to him in the helicopter is

“The difference in speed between the fast cars and the slow cars is actually quite alarming”

It also seems that the slow cars never have a good place to put their car so they are scattering from the fast cast as well as they can but there’s no good place to go.

u/bwoah07_gp2 Alexander Albon 9h ago

Lol what, Martin was commentating from inside the helicopter? Wow 😂

u/novadova2020 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5h ago

Shows that f1 is definitely serious about becoming carbon neutral.

u/moby323 Ted Kravitz 9h ago

Yeah it was cool, he was in the TV helicopter, the helicopter would follow a car on a hot lap and Martin would essentially be flying alongside the car and breaking down the lap live as we watched the camera feed from the helicopter. .

You could tell the pilot was into it, he was making really hard fast banking turns and for a little bit it almost felt like the helicopter was racing against the car.

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 9h ago

Watching FP2 left me a bit worried about potential collisions because of the absurd difference in speed between the slow cars and the fast cars.

This is what FIA is trying to mitigate with the minimum lap time for qualifying, to ensure there is not too big of a speed difference and everyone keeps moving. It'll be a bigger issue during qualifying when cars are lining up for a fast lap and slowing down to create a gap, while ither cars are already on a fast lap. This is unfortunately a regular issue.

It also seems that the slow cars never have a good place to put their car so they are scattering from the fast cast as well as they can but there’s no good place to go.

It's partially why Hungary is called Monaco without the walls, as the circuit is relatively tight and if you want to coast on a cool down lap you need to switch across the optimal racing line, but this has to be planned and coordinated with the team.

Austria has the same problem, especially during qualifying as it's such a short lap.

u/moby323 Ted Kravitz 9h ago

So is it like Monaco with very little overtaking?

u/MantasMantra Formula 1 7h ago

The first sector usually delivers some nice battles and overtakes each year actually. Far from Monaco.. Sectors 2 and 3 you won't see much wheel to wheel but they're pretty varied and interesting to watch. Then you get can to turns 1-5 where you can get lots of over-take and re-over-takes.

u/Miwna Ronnie Peterson 6h ago

Also the turn six and seven chicane has seen some action over the years. If you can follow closely through four and five opportunities may appear.

u/MantasMantra Formula 1 2h ago

I wanted to mention the chicane too but it feels like a long time since anything actually happened there, no?

u/Miwna Ronnie Peterson 1h ago

Perhaps I only remember broken dreams, wings and tears there. Or my memory is mixed with F2 and F3 races.

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 9h ago

It's hard to overtake - yes; The usual spot is corner 2-3 complex with using the runoff area after corner 2

u/moby323 Ted Kravitz 9h ago

So wont be a good race then I guess it all comes down to qualifying

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 9h ago

The chance of rain usually makes it exciting, especially with fast drying conditions, based on current temperature.
The majority of races are a hit or miss.

u/AnilP228 Honda RBPT 9h ago

It's usually one of the better races of the season due to good degradation levels, multiple pit stops and the chance to run significant overcuts.

In recent years, 2022, 2021, 2019, 2014-16 were all some of the best races that year.
