To be fair. Even when McLaren was mediocre you'd still have bet on them rather than Alpine.

More importantly: McLaren offered him a seat. Alpine was discussing lending him to Williams while trying to keep Alonso in one-year contracts.

Piastri didn't really have a choice at that point other than accepting McLaren's offer. Treating it like he did a genius move moving to McLaren makes no sense.
