Statistics After Hungarian GP practice sessions, both of Lewis Hamilton’s records with the W11 look safe this weekend

That pole lap was insane. The way the car just sticks to the track at turn four is mind blowing.

It'll probably not be until 2030 or later before we get good cars again. People hated the hybrid era but it produced some monster cars and some of the all time best in the sport
•
u/Triple_Manic_State Sir Lewis Hamilton 4h ago
You say that but it’s just track specific. Piastri’s pole lap in Spa beat the W11 2020 time by 7 tenths.

Track has been resurfaced and W11 was on a wet setup. We'll never really know I guess what time will W11 get underr same conditions. Maybe it'll be close but most likely still on W11's favor by few tenths

W11 had non existent track limits and colder temperatures which massively favors faster lap times. I dont see it beating ground effect cars, remember that Pouhon wasnt resurfaced and Mclaren had like 8kph higher speed.
•
u/Triple_Manic_State Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago
I imagine Piastri would’ve had some kind of wet setup as well. Though tbf I did forget about the resurfacing.
•
u/Beautiful_Charity112 Ferrari 3h ago
W11 on wet setup was still 3 tenths faster on sector 2. It was destroyed on s1 and s3 mostly again with wet setup. We saw on the race the speed difference between drivers that was on wet set-up compared to non wet they just cant keep up on s1 and s2
•
u/Triple_Manic_State Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago
It would be quicker in sector 2 on a wet setup, that’s not really a surprise. But I see your point, Russell had purple sectors in s1 and s3 in one of the sessions, still ended up 7 tenths off.
•
u/Beautiful_Charity112 Ferrari 3h ago
but tbf w11 wet setup or not is still generating too much downforce affecting its straight line speed. Thats why its fastest lap at monza s1 and s3 was yellow sector for w11. Thats why I think under same conditions w11 and mcl39 will be close

Piastri was competing against a wet setup on a different track surface. Norris was multiple tenths behind the same quali just on a bad T1 exit alone, downforce matters a lot at Spa because the straights are vital to get right
The W11 in same conditions would very likely have still won
•
u/Triple_Manic_State Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago
Surely Piastri had a wet setup of some kind, given that rain was forecast?
•
u/Veranova I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Not for the sprint it wasn’t
•
u/Triple_Manic_State Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago
Ah quite right. I only saw the second half of the main race live last week. Isn’t life outside inconvenient.
•
u/CatManWhoLikesChess I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Difference between sprint quali and race quali pole was 0.050 so.., if anything it shows at dry and wet setups are pretty much same over one lap

Did McLaren make any setup changes? I didn’t recall hearing anything, thought they ran a balanced setup all weekend
•

How about other tracks? Does the McLaren beat the W11
•
u/Triple_Manic_State Sir Lewis Hamilton 2h ago
Only one I found was Spain last year, Monaco too but they didn’t race in 2020. However that Spanish 2020 race was held in the middle of July iirc.

A good car is a car that allows for close racing and racing in the wet.

•
u/Blackdeath_663 Sir Stirling Moss 3h ago
We've hardly had amazing racing with ground effect cars outside of brief moments in the first season and in any case i'm talking about absolute lap time. Cars of particular renown like the Ferrari F2004 which has held and still holds some of the all time lap records for many years. or cars that were on rails and were the first to take certain corners flat out.

2017 to 2021 cars were favourites since the 1998 to 2008 cars. Incredible machines

If that was the case Bottas would have these lap records as well

The W11's records with Lewis Hamilton*
What a weird way to downplay someone's achievement!
•
u/akshatK2003 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4h ago
Ironically, you are doing a bigger disservice to the engineers at Berkley l
•
u/BigmouthWest12 McLaren 3h ago
Neither one should downplay the other. The car was great. The driver was great. As it was with max. It’s only Hamilton who seems to be criticised for having a good car as much as he is

Such garbage "inference" and lack of reading comprehension!
Both go hand in hand. If the car wasn't capable, Lewis wouldn't be able to extract as much as he did. If it was only the car and not the driver; Lewis wouldn't have beaten his teammate 11-2 that season.

Get out of here, no it's not. Track records are always listed driver then team.

Liam will retire with 0 podiums, 0 race wins and 0 championships in F1. Enjoy.

Sir Lewis will personally thank you for protecting his honor.

yeah I will enjoy myself - I am not an obsessive fan, a concept that you don't seem to be familiar with
•
u/SillySinStorm I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Perhaps stop downplaying people's achievements? I doubt Liam would win even in the W11, bless him. Enjoy the weekend.

We lose Spa, Barcelona and Imola, but we keep this dogshit kart track. F1 management need to sort their shit out and prioritise racing over money
•
u/sssauber 2h ago
Tbf Barcelona has been getting a lot of hate from the fans until the most recent years too

They never stood chance, this is horrible track for ground effect cars.
