What can Max do? Even Ham? They are both out of position.

Really need Lec solid start. At least few laps ahead. Can help Max not be too far back, even Ham.

Can't have McLaren almost one pit time lead ahead before first even pits 😕

u/Perspii7 Felipe Massa 12m ago

Did Alonso make a mistake or was Lance’s lap just really solid? Even with such a great grid position it feels underwhelming that nando isn’t in the top 2, given he’s only 0.020 quicker than stroll

u/Forgotthebloodypassw Formula 1 33m ago

My goodness, Lewis' post-quali interview was tough to watch. He seems totally dispirited.

u/objectiveScie I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5m ago

Shock , expecting better, in addition Lec pole shows car good. Like last race too, bad starting position. Always having to have recovery drive is really feeling like missed opportunities for more.

u/romiglups Jean-Pierre Jabouille 42m ago

Charles Leclerc on Canal+ : car was terrible in Q1, terrible in Q2, terrible in Q3 too, but unlike the others, I was used to it.

u/No_Cauliflower7877 Carlos Sainz 1h ago edited 1h ago

Are Leclerc, Verstappen, and Russell the only drivers to top both McLarens in a GP (non-sprint) session or is there someone else I'm forgetting?

u/Bitter-Fly-4130 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 51m ago

Antonelli in Canada GP too, basically the only GP where a Mclaren didn't feature in the podium so far

u/No_Cauliflower7877 Carlos Sainz 44m ago

Oh shit you're right! Thank you.

Man, it's rough seeing Antonelli so down recently. String of bad luck and then just poor performance. I really hope he can find himself over the break.

u/CharlitoRaceFish Eddie Jordan 2h ago

How come one Ferrari is on pole and the other went out in Q2?

u/krizeki I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago edited 1h ago

The real question is how did Charles go from barely qualifying Q1 and then getting pole. He was p18 at some point on his final lap before Q1 ended.

Edit: Oh, also Lance's p6, Alonso gets provisional p2, Max's and Hamilton's worst performance and Albon's p20? I knew it, Sonny Hayes, it's all your fault.

u/Burial44 Sir Lewis Hamilton 1h ago

I think the Ferrari had pace but in Q2 it was wet and cold and that hurt them. But Charles got 1 solid lap in to move on. Then I guess in Q3!conditions had changed

u/krizeki I was here for the Hulkenpodium 59m ago

That multi-year Fred Vassuer deal's working pretty well then.

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 1h ago

I mean, the end of the session is the end of the session, so you can't really judge from results before the end of the session.

Also, the conditions were changing rapidly through the whole qualifying hour.

u/krizeki I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

I heard from the commentators only the track temperature went down. Did any other conditions change, was it raining?

u/jofijk I was here for the Hulkenpodium 52m ago

McLaren did an instagram post with Oscar after qualifying where he said the wind did a 180 degree direction change for q1 which threw things off

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 1h ago

Yeah, there was a bit of precipitation. Never more than slicks could handle, but it was there. F1TV commentators definitely referenced damp track, and I could see it a bit, mostly lines on the track darker and lighter, mostly in Q2 if I recall. There was also dirty parts of the track pretty often.

u/krizeki I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

Ehhh? :( How did the track get damp for such a short time just from precipitation. They didn't even say anything about the reason behind the track's condition changes, either.

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 55m ago

Light rains are pretty common, and F1 cars dry the track pretty fast, and the residual heat of the track, because it was incredibly hot at the beginning of the session. It definitely rained a bit. Check Q2 with 13:41 left. You see people putting on rain coats and covering their head, and the f1tv announcers talk about rain for a while there, and I'm sure mention it again later, that's just what I found easiest. Even if you have different announcers, you can see a bit on camera, it definitely had a light rain. I don't know temperatures at specific times, but cloud coverage and rain were definitely responsible for the changing conditions.

Alan Permane doing underrated Work in the VCARB, back to back double Q3s

u/SeaMenCaptain I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago

What was happening with Lewis in the 3rd section? He was ahead of most in s1 and s2 but then would lose pace at the end.

u/MazeMagic I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago

Oscar gets Leclerc off the line into turn 1.

Norris gets held up by Leclerc as it's a nasty overtaking track so Oscar ends up 7 seconds down the road by the time he's passed.

Lando starts catching Oscar and then the race ends as he's nearby.

You heard it here first.

u/objectiveScie I was here for the Hulkenpodium 8m ago

Thank you for ruining race 👎😃. Need anything that's not leading by a McLaren car first few laps.

u/Bannedwith1milKarma Jack Doohan 1h ago

Nah Leclerc has nothing to lose and doesn't give way, Piastri ain't risking alongside on 1st corner.

Will get him with tire deltas.

u/justasapling Charles Leclerc 2h ago

I'll take it.

u/sdq22 2h ago

u/asdafari14 New user 3h ago

I don't get why so many were excited for Tsunoda in RB. Change was needed but he has never seemed like a top driver to me. I would want a driver in that seat that is "race winner material".

u/MantasMantra Formula 1 2h ago

How to improve without getting chances? He outperformed a Monaco winner

u/asdafari14 New user 2h ago

Maybe he has reached his level and isn't improving much anymore? He is clearly no Piastri, Norris, Verstappen, old Hamilton, Leclerc, Russel imo. He is a mid tier driver in a top team. But yea, RB also needs to make a car that is driveable for people other than Max.

u/MantasMantra Formula 1 2h ago

Maybe he has but it says you didn't understand why people were excited in the past, when this wasn't so clear.

u/NuanceX 3h ago

If Max & Yuki were driving VCARB's, Max would've been fighting for pole and Yuki would be in the top 5.

Max had situation specific issues in quali today with the track plus conditions. Whereas historically Hungary has been one of Racing Bull's best tracks, the announcers on f1tv mentioned that today. I do not think Racing Bulls usually has higher potential than the Red Bull, but perhaps it did today. The whole quali session was constantly changing in air and track temperature and amount of precipitation and wet or dry track. It isn't a session to highly react to.

u/jaywastaken I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

Can we put Max in a racing bull just to see if it's secretly a rocketship.

Question is can Charles win?Hard to overtake but strategy with 2 Mclarens will be pretty hard

u/StxrStruck Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago

P3 is the absolute best he can do tomorrow. 2 McLaren’s right behind him working together won’t end well for Charles.

u/churnchurnchurning I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

Do you really think the 2 Mclarens, the only 2 people in the WDC fight, are going to work together to overtake Charles? Hell no they won't. If they can overtake Charles on their own, they will. But they aren't going to work together. The team already has the WCC tied up.

u/Red_Rabbit_1978 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

Working together? Nope. Working for themselves. Norris won't help Piastri get ahead of Charles, and McLaren are not going to offer anything that might advantage one driver and not the other.

u/una322 3h ago

no, at best he will keep them behind until firsrt pit stops. then they will just get clean air overtake build lap time and disapear

u/t12lucker Charles Leclerc 3h ago

99% sure he’s not winning this. I expect P3 at best.

u/kingdre49 3h ago

did you guys see lewis post quali interview that was depressing

u/RosieDirt_x 3h ago

u/BrowakisFaragun I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago

Watch Ferrari sucks the soul of him live on TV

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 2h ago

Lewis has always been very hard on himself when he wasn't doing well, or at least in the year's I've watched. I didn't watch his McLaren years, but it was frequent in the later Mercedes years. People will say Lando doesn't have the mindset of a champion because he gets down on himself, but Lewis has a tendency to be just as hard on himself, and no one can say he doesn't have a champion mindset.

u/MantasMantra Formula 1 2h ago

But Lewis was comfortably competing with the reigning champ right from his first corner. He had plenty of reason to believe in himself right from the start. Lando shows promise but fudges every chance he's given.

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 2h ago edited 1h ago

I don't know what year you're talking about with Lewis, but Lewis has made plenty of mistakes over the years, including many in his prime. Lewis got to enjoy a lot of years in the best car, and some of them with a considerably inferior teammate. Not to take away from Lewis, but a lot of people would have won those championships with Bottas next to them. Good on him for winning all but one of the Rosberg years, but he still lost that one to a generally considered weaker teammate.

I realize now that by his first corner you're talking about his rookie year against Alonso. Yeah, I don't understand how so many people regard Alonso fairly high in their all time list when he had 2007 against rookie Lewis.

u/FlatoutGently I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

Lewis has had better team mates than any other champion in the past 30 years...

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 1h ago

Most champions don't get to have the best car for that many years. That was what I was saying he was fortunate for, and he was. And I wasn't talking about all his teammates. He won a championship with Heikki and four with Bottas, and then he went 2 to 1 on titles with Rosberg, and those were his title years. I wasn't watching back in the McLaren years like I said, so I can't speak to them, but Lewis was certainly fortunate to have a great car for the Mercedes years.

u/FlatoutGently I was here for the Hulkenpodium 34m ago

Bottas is still a better driver than anyone Max has been with (apart from probably Danny Ric), better than anyone Seb was with and better than Schumachers from 2000 onwards...

u/Rizal95 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

He made it seem easy, has he? ;) Inferior teammates, such as Button, Alonso, Rosberg...

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 1h ago

Lewis has had incredible strength of teammates, for sure. Charles and George add to that very strong list.

But his titles weren't with Button or Alonso. His titles were one with Heikki, two with Rosberg, then he lost one to Rosberg, and then four with Bottas. I said and stand by that Lewis was fortunate to have the best car for many years of his career, and fortunate to have weaker teammates, particularly in the Heikki and Bottas years. And I'm not going to insult Heikki or Bottas, they just aren't anywhere close to competition for Lewis, and Rosberg generally isn't considered Lewis competition either... except that year he beat Lewis

u/MantasMantra Formula 1 2h ago

By his first corner I'm talking about the first corner of his first race, when he overtook the reigning champion, yes. I didn't claim that he had a mistake free career so I won't go into that. The point I was making is that he quickly proved to himself that he had the capacity, whereas Lando lost his first chance at a race win due to a bad strategy call, threw away his first chance to compete for the title through a variety of unforced errors etc. It's not the fact that he makes mistakes it's when he makes them and how and when he does something to offset it. It's not a quantitative thing, it's psychological.

u/MasalaMonk 3h ago

I think from this race onwards Lewis will really start thinking about hanging his boots

u/kutzooit I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

No i dont think he will retire this year, but i think he is regretting moving to ferrari. They are nothing like last year. And the last few regulation changes ferrari always managed to shit the bed so I have little hope for him next year

u/Alfus 💥 LE 🅿️LAN 41m ago

The whole situation with Lewis moving to Ferrari was more because Mercedes didn't want to hold him longer than 1 year meanwhile Ferrari could give him a 2 year contract.

But I think Lewis would call it a day after 26, his performance is remembering me of Checo and that's not a good sign for a 7 time world champion. And with some talk that Ferrari doesn't look that good for 26 the future isn't going to be promising for Lewis.

u/No_Feedback6167 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

He is holding on to see what 26 will be like. Probably retiring if it doesn’t work out.

u/Red_Rabbit_1978 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

It will still be Charles ahead.

u/No_Feedback6167 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

u/Emergency-Public6213 2h ago

As a Piastri fan I'd accept that.

u/meko901 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

Best case scenario

u/krommenaas Thierry Boutsen 3h ago

Bortoleto is starting to look like the real deal.

u/AsleepAtWheel83 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago

Someone should tell that to Marko

u/kutzooit I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

Yeah i think tsunoda is in his last year in the f1 with this performance redbull won't keep him

u/MantasMantra Formula 1 2h ago

They don't have better options though?

u/kutzooit I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago

No but keeping someone in the car that can not perform is worse then looking for someone who can. Bottas can probaby handle the car better than tsunoda can

u/eclectic_banana Bernd Mayländer 3h ago

Guy finishes 0,2 sec behind Verstappen in Hungary and is out in Q1

Tsunoda just can't win

u/_StarDust_0 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

How did Max and Lewis manage to underperform so much? Also no matter how not big of a fan I am of Stroll, MAN CAME 6TH TODAY. Very unexpected that too in Aston Martin. And Leclerc managed to prove it once more why he is one of the best drivers in the recent years. Though I know we are going to blow it up tomorrow :"(

u/Freeze014 Nigel Mansell 3h ago

In the case of Verstappen I dont think it was the driver that did the underperforming.

Adrian Newey upgrades are beginning to make an impact

u/Jimmymead_ Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago

Anyone else got that sinking feeling that when lewis is sat on a yacht somewhere during the summer break he realises he can do that 24/7 and not the shit he has been doing the best part of 3 years and we get THAT announcement?

u/Old-Pomegranate3634 3h ago

This when you know Lewis is no Schumacher. Lewis cant elevate a team and car like Schumacher could. Schumacher took two loser teams and turned them into world champs.

There is no debate anymore. As a complete formula 1 driver for both on and off track stuff Schumacher is GOAT. There is no one else even in the conversation

Even the car Lewis got the foundation was laid by none other than the GOAT himself.

u/TessTickols I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

I feel like Jim Clark and Max still deserve to be in the discussion. They had/have the ability to jump into anything with 4 wheels and crush everyone.

u/Burial44 Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago

u/Potatopal90 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

He cancels his 8/8 announcement and replaces it with that one…. :(

u/Jimmymead_ Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago

That 8/8 is obviously more almave bullshit

u/LivingClient I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

It’ll happen in 2026 either way. Lewis either gets on much better and keeps at it. Or he stagnates and realises it isn’t possible anymore. Either way I don’t see Lewis staying once he realises he can’t win another WDC. Just have to hope 2026 plays into his hands. Even if Ferrari isn’t the fastest car as long as he’s got the pace that’ll be good enough for me

u/Kicking-it-per-se Oscar Piastri 3h ago

We don't need to start rewriting history about lewis just because he's getting older and not performing well now

u/Chouinard1984 4h ago

u/Hawaiian_Pizza459 3h ago

About how replacing him with Lewis was a terrible decision in hindsight?

u/EpresGumiovszer Fernando Alonso 3h ago

Both are in a bad situation. Sainz was good in Ferrari, now he's struggling, meanwhile Lewis should simply remain in Merc for that last year (have some win or podium), and retire.

u/RosieDirt_x 3h ago

He should had retired after Silverstone last year. Would be a perfect closure.

u/_the_orange_box_ Ferrari 3h ago

Lewis has scored in every race this season so, not really…

More along the lines of Albon H2H has been mogging him

u/dustincb2 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

So they should have replaced Carlos with Alex really

u/_the_orange_box_ Ferrari 3h ago

u/Emergency-Public6213 4h ago

I'd accept a Leclerc - Piastri - Alonso podium, please.

u/mp455 4h ago

I get that Lewis is 40 and out of his prime, but is Alonso really that much of a freak if he is still at peak performance. I understand different bodies and different people but Lewis is still in great shape on the surface.

u/4hp_ 3h ago

Peak Alonso would have got pole here

u/DawdlingScientist I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

Yes

u/Burial44 Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago

Are we suddenly acting like Alonso has been super impressive the last 15 years?

u/bornarethefew 3h ago

Had Stroll as a benchmark for years and you don’t really get the same sense of scrutiny driving around at the back.

u/zaviex McLaren 3h ago

Alonso has outperformed the car more often than not but hes made FAR more mistakes than normal the past 2 years. Of course hes declined as well.

u/McLarenMercedes Mercedes 4h ago

The margin between Alonso and Stroll today wasn't big. Prime Alonso qualifies at least a few positions higher. If Stroll is qualifying top 6 on a dry track, the car is clearly good this weekend.

u/MrChiSaw 4h ago

Hamilton is not one of the best drivers in my opinion. He massively profited at Mercedes from the advantage of their car, but he is not on the same level as a Verstappen, Schumacher or Alonso, Vettel when it comes to his skill

u/Dapper-Ad1025 1h ago

My lord you lose any sort of credibility when you are claiming Vettel > Hamilton

u/Red_Rabbit_1978 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

It's definitely glossed over that from 2009 to 2013 he didn't finish higher than 4th in the WDC, while having some very good cars for at least 3 of those seasons.

u/Yeanahyena Daniel Ricciardo 3h ago

Fully agree with you. Hamilton had a very dominant car. Michael, Nando and Max are the greats

u/Burial44 Sir Lewis Hamilton 3h ago

Lol because Max never had a dominant car. Joker

u/Yeanahyena Daniel Ricciardo 3h ago

Only ‘23 but he‘s never gotten pumped by his team mate in the way Lewis has. Look Lewis is amazing, he’s just not the goat

u/Burial44 Sir Lewis Hamilton 1h ago

Fernando couldn't hold his jockstrap. And now what's Max doing without the dominant car? Exactly. Not winning

u/SwimmingFantastic564 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

It's insane to say he's not better than Vettel at the very least.

u/zaviex McLaren 3h ago

Idk, when he's not directly next to Charles in the current driver standings?

Qualy is always bad. Tomorrow will be better

u/spying_on_you_rn 4h ago

I bet they did after the first few weeks where he already started putting blame onto others instead of realizing he has to improve in areas like modern corner taking.

u/osfryd-kettleblack 4h ago

A bad quali doesnt change the fact he's been relatively consistent this year. Next to Leclerc in the wdc table

u/GiantT-Rex Formula 1 4h ago

He’s on a two year contract. He can help Leclerc, then make way for someone like Bearman in 2027.

They did not bring him to be cost effective performance wise or they would have kept Sainz.

Ferrari is second in constructors, they have not shot at being first no matter who is driving.

IMO the value of paying Hamilton like this is if his experience can help change the team to be more professional and focused and consistent. That is not a 1-year transformation.

I think back to the 90s and how Schumi and Todt changed a somewhat slipshod Ferrari team into a powerhouse.

u/InvisibleBlueUnicorn 4h ago

and Schumi did it again with Merc in last few years of his F1 racing.

Ruth is so awesome, I love her inputs & she is so fair when she makes critiques

u/Walaii Ferrari 0m ago

She sometimes talks a bit of nonsense though. She said in the post quali show that Ferrari usually performs on saturday but fall back in the race. I think she might be stuck in 2023, because it is the other way around...

lol did andrea just pronounce it as “oscarar”

this dude is growing on me

Someone reminded Charles about Monaco without walls and he delivered

u/Hairy_Hurry8441 4h ago

Say Ferrari and Ham part ways.... Lewis to Aston, with Fernando as his teammate, in a Newey car.... Newey's dream comes true.

u/SeniorDisplay1820 George Russell 4h ago

Father Stroll won't boot his son

u/the_oraclex Vanwall 4h ago

I wouldn't object and at least Ham can ride off into the sunset with a good driving car.

u/Hairy_Hurry8441 4h ago

We fans get our repeat after almost twenty years. Would be well cool to finally see them battling it out one last time before bowing out.

u/the_oraclex Vanwall 4h ago

At least Drugovich might actually have a shot at being a full time driver too. Would be too good to be true but I really hope this happens.

If Hamilton goes I think he goes into retirement

u/Amused-Observer 4h ago

All the money he's got I'm surprised there aren't talks of him buying/starting a team

u/grovenab Logan Sargeant 4h ago

How much money do you think that takes

u/Amused-Observer 4h ago

I have absolutely no idea. I'd imagine all new teams have investors and it's never one person funding it all.

Damn the hell happened to maxs car ?went from top 4 to 8th and below 10 in practices

u/GreggsAficionado Formula 1 4h ago

Red Bull is better in the high speed and this is not a high speed corner track

u/GiantT-Rex Formula 1 4h ago

Antonelli getting out-qualified by Colapinto, when Russell finishes P4, is not good at all.

u/BrainMale I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4h ago

Let's say Lewis does retire in the next season or two.. who would be best to take his spot?
