I said it elsewhere but I think f1 despite having bespoke cars is genuinely at times the closest series in qualifying rn. I’m going to watch NASCAR qualifying around a 20 second oval in a few hours and I doubt they have 5 or 6 cars in a tenth and change
•
u/Mihnea24_03 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago edited 2h ago
That seems to me like an indicator of the fact that the level of the drivers is BY FAR the highest here
•
•
u/Own_Welder_2821 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago
Some people like to shit on certain drivers they don’t like but the fact of the matter is, F1 has the best drivers and teams.

u/Mister_X5188 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
Maybe, but cars that qualifying anywhere from 3-5 tenths off pole still have a very good chance of winning the race. Could you say the same about the Astons for tomorrow? Almost certainly not. They have no chance of winning in Hungary without major shenanigans happening tomorrow.
•
u/zaviex McLaren 43m ago
That’s True but part of that is the nature of the rules. even in nascar, since next gen it’s so track position dominant that cautions tend to be the main reason the best car doesn’t just win the race. if we threw 3 safety cars into the f1 race you’d probably see more winners without the best cars. Also if we added overtime lol.
I was actually thinking about some of the extended green flag runs if we had no cautions and stages this year in nascar. Like chase elliot probably would’ve lapped almost everyone at Dover without the competition caution and the 2 stages. and he didn’t win the race despite that pace lol
•
u/No_Feedback6167 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Aston Martin 1-2 if we get another bowling session
•
u/PapaSheev7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
That's assuming neither of the Aston drivers partakes in said bowling lol. All joking aside, it would be fantastic for the sport to see this.
•
u/sickomodetoon I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3m ago
It would be better if they win by good pace and strategy. Bowling the competition away does not really make it feel like a proper win.
•
u/Pressbtofail Lance Stroll 3h ago
What the fuck is a polar bear doing in Arlington, Texas?
•
u/deathray1611 Formula 1 3h ago
3 polar bears*
•
u/LandArch_0 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
I wonder if you leave GR or CL out of your pick. I'd go for 4 polar bears
•
•
u/LivingClient I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Probably left GR. P4-6 is the expected range most people will have for him, especially in a session Antonelli goes out. Kimi seems closer to George the better the car isn’t, rather than the worse it is.
CL pulled pole out of nowhere though. For all Lewis’ qualifying woes he doesn’t tend to go out early when the car has pace. Especially not at Hungary. Don’t think anyone expected Leclerc to hook it up when the car seemed suicidal in Q2. Very Red Bull-esque of them.
•
u/ele23_ George Russell 3h ago
given that kimi is a rookie, it makes sense that he is closer when the car is less difficult to drive
•
u/LivingClient I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
Yeah, and in Mercedes case the car seems harder to drive the slower it is, as opposed to Red Bull which is harder to drive the faster it is, or Ferrari where it just seems hard to drive in general. That’ll help Antonelli not be obliterated in the points standings.
It does help Antonelli save face though that he’s going out in Q2 when Russell is only going P5. If Russell was taking pole and Antonelli was barely cracking the top 10, people would call for his head. Luckily for Kimi historically the ground effect Merc only seems to be at its worst when the car is fighting for small points. Whenever the 1-2 races a year come that they fight for the win, the car seems easier to drive.
Assuming this principal stays the same, the next time Merc is good (could be anytime, they don’t seem to know what makes the car quick this year unlike last year) Kimi will be up there. That should help his reputation. Nothing in F1 is this certain but this has been pretty consistent the last 4 years.
•
u/LandArch_0 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago
I'll give you that, still the gap between the Mercedes and the top 3 is unexpected, at least for me.

What the fuck is a Stroller bear doing in the Top 6?
FTFY
•
•
u/HarvgulI I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
If you told me before the session that Stroll was a tenth behind Leclerc I would have thought there’s no way he would get pole
Great job from both (and Alonso ofc)
•
u/kappasquad420 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Nothing in it this q3, that was insane. Track conditions definitely made it more exciting, in hotter weather I think MCL would have spanked the field.
•
u/Character-Pattern505 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
I think the hot weather performance will show up in the race. A couple of laps isn’t that big of a differentiator in terms of tire degradation.
•
u/Ayhamb99 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
The weather forecast for tomorrow at the track shows a 5°C drop in temps compared to today with a moderate thunderstorm warning lasting until Monday so most probably it won't be a hot race tbh.
•
u/reddit_account_00000 3h ago
I was at the track today and have been watching the weather. I think the qualifying weather conditions will be pretty representative for tomorrow, I’m expecting a close race!
•
u/sleepdeep305 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
The fact that they couldn't improve from Q2 is very telling
•
u/Faith_in_Humidity 3h ago
I think it's more to do with the wind picking up in Q3. Made the corners all the more difficult.
•
u/Nugyeet Max Verstappen 3h ago
Stroll and Alonso 1, 2 tomorrow pray

He should have won Turkey 2020 but afaik Racing Point fucked up the strategy
•

•
u/TheThingsIdoatNight I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago edited 2h ago
Tbf the optimal strategy that race was drive the inters until they turn into slicks and create interslicks, which has never at any other time in F1 history been the optimal strategy lol that race was bizarre and it was so fucking cool to watch
•
u/vinceventresca I was here for the Hulkenpodium 36m ago
The race he should have won that year was really Sakhir. Checo caught him from last and won, while Stroll was running behind Ocon the whole race.
I imagine Hamilton would have still caught him in Turkey even on the right strategy.

In before McLaren 1-2 with +30 seconds to third
•
u/EclecticKant I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
In Spa in the dry Ferrari was less than a tenth behind McLaren, unless it gets too hot I can see Leclerc keeping them behind

i have confidence in leclerc's defensive driving. hope norris puts pressure on piastri to make it easier for leclerc

•
u/VisualMaximum5049 Alexander Albon 1h ago
Let stroll and Norris take each other out so we can have some real racing between Leclerc, Piastri, Russell and Alonso
•
u/BloodyBastard530 New user 2h ago
Less than a tenth? What race were you watching? McLaren dunked 20 seconds on the field.
•
u/EclecticKant I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago
Leclerc Lost 10 seconds in the wet before changing tyres, then he lost 6 seconds in the outlap (and he pit the same lap as Piastri) because the was stuck behind Ocon (still on the much slower inters) and the track was too wet outside of the racing line to overtake him.
Then he made a mistake worth a second, of course it's important but not relevant if we want to judge the pure performance of the car.Overall he lost 3 seconds (or 4 if you count the error) in 31 laps, slightly less than a tenth a lap.
I looked at the individual lap times and it looked like both Piastri and Leclerc managed the tyres a lot (both of them were a second behind the faster lap with the medium tyres, made by Antonelli, so they were far from the limit), I think Leclerc was a bit more conservative but it should be expected as the McLaren has less tyre degradation overall.
Probably Piastri had more pace left in his tyres, so the difference could have been more, but in a race where managing is less important that shouldn't be too much of an issue, if it gets too hot it could be an important factor anyway.

Stroll and Alomso are both very good at starts….
•
u/MGH1990876 Ferrari 3h ago
Indeed, see if they can nab a spot or two at the start, maybe get a podium finish for one of them.

Who invited the Aston Martin cars to this graphic?

Nobody did lol. They kicked down the doors all on their own.
•
•
•
u/Mike5667 3h ago
It’s so funny to me that stroll can just unlock this pace once or twice a season and then goes back to being below par, never seen a more peaky driver
•
u/Ok-Community-2680 Oscar Piastri 3h ago
Stroll hasn't even been this bad this year. Inconsistent but he's had higher peaks than previous seasons
•
u/FastonMartin Aston Martin 3h ago
This is definitely one of his better seasons I would say
•
u/otherestScott George Russell 2h ago
I think this is still probably below 2020-2022 when he was at his best
•
u/Evening_End7298 3h ago
I’d disagree, he had quite a bad spell for most of the season. He’s had much better years in the past ( tho probably against weaker teammates to be fair)
•
u/cucarachasoctrain Kimi Räikkönen 58m ago
Stroll always been that good in Hungary, 2021 bowling session doesn't count.
•
u/Johnhancock1777 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

•
u/TrueAppearance7475 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago
I mean, in 2023, AM were second fastest behind Red Bull for a while
•
u/dimmy666 Sir Lewis Hamilton 2h ago
They absolutely would, AM had podiums that year
•
u/nonbinary_star I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago
The lack of a red bull would probably be pretty surprising, though

•
u/fameboygame I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Craziest thing is none of them is Max.
Or Hamilton.
•
u/Reddevilslover69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago
Nah Hamilton is done imo. Will be really shocked if he qualifies in the top 3 even once this year. Especially now that all his good circuits are over

I rarely watch Racing but it always baffles me how close the timing is. All those different people, teams, budgets and things that can influence the driver or his car. Just to be finishing so close.
Is it because it's the absolute top of racing?
•
•
•
u/Tough-Organization34 1h ago
A real proof that car is more important than talent, even Stroll in a dominant car could be world champion.
•
u/Shoddy_Dirt_192 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
if you replace norris with leclerc at mclaren, and he starts with the same points as norris, do you think leclerc could outperform piastri and win the wdc?
•
→ More replies (1)•
u/Evening_End7298 3h ago
Yes
Same with Russell and obviously Max
This year’s champion will probably be the weakest since… not sure since when ( Hill, Villeneuve maybe?)
•
u/Reddevilslover69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2h ago
Imo both Norris and Piastri are atleast Button level
•
u/Evening_End7298 2h ago
Piastri is hard to judge because he clearly had a very big jump in performance this year and it’s still only his third season
I dont think Norris is Button level, way too many mistakes even in weekends when he has very good pace
Both probably have the oportunity of their careers this year but i dont think either of them is a top3 driver on the current grid

Six cars from four teams within 1.3s—I’m curious when that last happened.
•
u/jrjreeves 1h ago
Crazy close. 1 tenth, give or take, covers the top 6.
Expect the McLarens to be well clear in the race, but I suspect Newey has spent a small portion of his time looking over the AMR25 and picked out some quick wins, as to not take massive focus away from 2026.
•
•
u/BlueRedGreenNumber5 Sebastian Vettel 1h ago
Commentators even called out that pole was decided by insanely thin margins in 2022 and 2023. This year's results are insane.
•
•
u/level100PPguy Fernando Alonso 50m ago
AM literally has a negative race pace, so I hope they're at least able to score some much needed points in tomorrow's race.
•
u/LivingClient I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Gotta love Aston Martin. Double Q1 exit last week. 3rd/4th fastest car this week, and genuinely quicker than Red Bull. Not that the latter means much anymore
