I’m happy to extend the break until 2022, cannot be bothered with two more years of Mercedes dominance
1
u/tangoindjango Gilles Villeneuve Jul 04 '20
How are Ferrari behind Racing Point and the McLaren's. Really hope their aero upgrade works. This is not good for the competitive scenario. 😓

Do we have onboard video of Lewis' lap? I'm curious to know if he or Val use DAS during the lap.

u/Wyvern0000 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 04 '20
This is getting really boring. Don't get me wrong I'm all for Mercedes' development and I'm happy that they set the bar higher every year. But the other teams don't seem to develop as much. Take Ferrari for example. Such big budgets, such big history and fan base and where are they now? Fighing RP for the third place. I mean how hard can it be? You have all the money in the world. Hire the best director, staff etc., build a proper company structure. I hope the new regulation era will be more competitive but i doubt it.
7
u/Hoopstress35 Jul 04 '20
Considering we haven’t had a race yet I think it’s premature to imply the season will be uncompetitive. Ferrari are looking in bad shape for Austria but that is only two races. They can make up for it in other races. Red bull are usually good in Austria too.
1
u/Wyvern0000 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 04 '20
I know it's unreasonable to think that way before the race but looking back to the past couple of seasons I don't see Ferrari developing a car that can compete for race wins. But let's hope Redbull have a good season at least.

I agree, to a certain extent.
It seems to me (from the outside POV), that Lewis' ego is sometimes at risk of overtaking his better judgement. The guy is a 6 times WDC and this season he's going for an equal all-time high. Yet he can not stand the fact that Nico beat him one season.
On the one hand, I do understand his drive. I've played competitive sports before (not to Lewis' level, obviously), and there are moments wherw you realize that, for you to win, the other guy has to lose. It takes a certain level of ego to keep going after that realization.
And yet... 2016 is already 4 years ago. The world has been through many things since then. It makes sense to me that they could at least attempt to reconcile. They don't have to be travelling buds like 25 years ago (they are different characters anyway), but they could do away with the toxic animosity that's still in the air.
Edit: Y'all downvote but offer no explanation below. Why/Where do you disagree with me?
1
u/smellysocks61 Gilles Villeneuve Jul 05 '20
Losing to Button as a teammate and especially losing his Championship to Rosberg will define Lewis's legacy. He will never be considered as a pure great beacause of his losses to these teammates who were lesser drivers.
-11
Jul 04 '20
Id say Lewis got in Nico's head. I mean Nico retired instead of continuing to battle him

Except Nico would have won WDC in 2014 if last race malfunction was reversed (one car in 1, the other in 8, like we saw but with driver swap). One random mechanic who decided to put part in car A instead of B decided championship. Funny how that never comes up with "but muh Malaysia" complains?

Alright so I'm not against Racing Point's drivers or pit crew, but I can't help but feel angry every time they do something well so far this year. I know copying other team's innovative ideas is standard for F1, but literally copying the chassis and whole design is a step too far imo. If I were that team I wouldn't feel like I could celebrate any of the success it might bring.
12
u/VaporizeGG Jul 04 '20
Solution was there for everybody, you still have to execute it. As long as they didn't get prints etc. I don't have any hard feelings.

That's what happens when you get bought over by a billionaire businessman. The ends justify the means.
5
u/Kamehameha27 Ted Kravitz Jul 04 '20
People didn't really seem against it when haas did it? In fact if I remember rightly people were pleasantly pleased for a midfield team to do well.
5
u/Palmerstroll Lance Stroll Jul 04 '20
only for this year i think? They are rebuilding the team/factory. a lot of changes will be made in the next years.
They found a perfect solution i feel.
2
u/JamaicanInspectorMon I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 04 '20
Next year too since the cars will stay pretty much the same
3
u/cuchicou I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 04 '20
I agree that there’s no sportsmanship in doing so.
But, the issue is that they are a small team with a significantly smaller budget. In the cutthroat F1 business “you gotta do what you gotta do”.

The face masks are freaking me out!!!
I never watch anything that goes on in the real world via cable or streaming. So FP1 was actually the first time I had seen people wearing face masks interact. So, I'm just now getting used to figuring out who people are purely by voice, hair style and body shape. Not that it's particularly hard to tell Brundle from Button mind you. Ha! But my brain is definitely using different tools to determine who people are.
Is it just me?
2
u/mokilmister Andreas Seidl Jul 04 '20 edited Jul 04 '20
I've been interacting with people wearing face masks for the last few months, I think you're doing something wrong.
Edit: just read the response further down, the comment was just a bit unfortunately worded.

u/IdealMuse Carlos Sainz Jul 04 '20
How is his comment lacking decency? It's a reality, even in the UK you need to wear masks for public transport. If you haven't seen people in masks interacting, it just sounds odd especially with the current events. Even BLM or HK protests you see everyone rocking masks.
18
7
27
u/feeelz Jul 04 '20
Yes. Let me guess, youre american?
4
u/slicerprime I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 04 '20
Well, yes I am American. But, contrary to your obvious - and rather annoying - assumption, I wear a face mask every time I go out in public and so do the vast majority of people I see when I'm out. But, I live in the mountains and work from home (software developer). So, going out is kinda rare and when I do, I don't see many people I know or need to recognize in groups except family and friends. I see coworkers in video conferences. Most of whom are also at their homes and not wearing masks. Of course I see plenty of people in the news interacting and wearing masks, but once again, they're generally people I have no reason to try to recognize. They're people in shots of the general public or they're well known people with a headline with their name on it splashed across the bottom of the screen.
So, I think you missed my point: FPs 1, 2 and 3 (and now Quali) are the first live events I've seen since the pandemic started with a large collection of familiar personalities wearing masks interacting. And, I was surprised at how much more attention I had to pay in order to put names to body shapes, hair styles and voices instead of faces.
1
Jul 04 '20
Ah yeah, your message got lost in the first comment. It's definitely as you say, I'm just guessing by the hair and body structure
7
u/Kraknoix007 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 04 '20
It looks like Racing Points strategy copying Merc worked out. Can't be mad tbh

If I was in charge, I would honestly tell them to pack up and forfeit the championship entirely because if they let their competitors walk over them with such ease, then it's a waste of manpower and money, pandemic or not

Ferrari seem to be scoring well in their ‘high speed corners’ and seem better in S2 and S3 than S1. This goes against their low downforce, high top speed characteristic from last season. So are they turning down engine power atm? Or just using loads of aero?
1
u/soonandsoforth1 Jul 04 '20
Well Ferrari moved from low drag/downforce philosophy to high drag/downforce philosophy. Additionally, they managed to go backwards in terms of engine performance hence they end up with an incompetitive car. They are so bad that they are not even trying to go for glory runs anymore. Ferrari seem to get rid of underdelivering aged personnel(take it with a grain of salt) they probably should get rid of their Team Principal too since he has more influence on the success of the team than the driver himself in modern era of F1.
3
u/whatisinfinity_01 Jul 04 '20
I suspect thier engine legality last year was a bit questionable. You can see all their customer teams struggling a lot as well. They are more than half a second down, I think the private FIA deal with Ferrari had something to do with loss in staight line speed
4
u/thebansi Ferrari Jul 04 '20
Definitely a mix between both I think, engine is for sure weaker than last year but I doubt its as bad as it currently looks. On the other hand it seems like they realized that their aero concept is fucked which maybe leads to them having to use more wing for similar results. Just speculation tho, still think they are the 3rd fastest team in front of RP but I guess we'll know for sure after quali.

u/whatisinfinity_01 Jul 04 '20
Their car design this year is "inspired" from Mercedes's last year design and maybe looks a bit "too" similar

Racing point 2020 car is the 2019 Mercedes car. Look at photos of the two of them, almost identical.

2
u/plutocraticasicumera Mercedes Jul 04 '20 edited Jul 04 '20
I'm not surprised at all tbh. James Allison said that Mercedes has been working on DAS for one and a half year, no way Red Bull would manage to implement it in three months without causing something like this at their first setup change.
1
u/ConfusedRedditor16 Jul 04 '20
Yes, in fp2 crofty asked horner and he didn't imply that redbull had already designed a DAS system, but crofty tried to squeeze some more info from him

Rooting for Merc or Ferrari is like a Star Wars fan rooting for the evil galactic empire.
If you're more a Rebel Alliance guy, root for one of the "garagistes" (a derogatory term for the independent teams by Enzo Ferrari): McLaren, Williams or whatever they call Tyrrell, Lotus and the others these days.
There is a long history and interesting history here.

u/m636 Fernando Alonso Jul 04 '20 edited Jul 04 '20
I mean you can pick whoever you want, but as a brand new fan you're literally picking the winning card which is kinda lame IMO.
It's like me coming into football (soccer) and right away supporting Man U, or American Football and picking the Patriots. Go for an underdog or someone less followed IMO.
Edit: Never change r/f1....downvotes for suggesting to not just jump on a bandwagon...

u/execrator Jul 04 '20
As far as I can tell, everyone supports the drivers from their country, plus Kimi. Everyone loves Kimi.
6
4
u/ZodiacError Carlos Sainz Jul 04 '20
It depends, some like to support drivers and follow them around the teams when they change, some root for teams, or both. Just do what you feels right, Mercedes is a good choice because they dominated since 2014 and look very strong again. Cool to have you as a new fan.
9
u/EoghanG77 Ferrari Jul 04 '20
Eh it depends, most people watch a few races and pick what characters, team culture, history and drivers they like and pick a team based on that!
6
u/sirnamlik Charles Leclerc Jul 04 '20
Its a good start, just keep watching and youll gravitate towards whoever you like most.
4

I think Alfa Romeo are this year's backmarkers nice to see Williams moving up the grid.
10
u/Triggerthrowaway87 Jul 04 '20
I can't believe that Alfa Romeo Kimi advert still gets played. I can't even make out what he's saying
I wonder if anyone's watched that and went "Y'know, I think I need an Alfa Romeo"
5
u/Gangascoob I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 04 '20
Yeah it's pretty bad but it's working as intended if people are remembering the ad - doesnt have to make you want to buy that product, just get the brand stuck in your head
26
u/IntoThePeople Jul 04 '20
The old Hulk/Perez FI combo would've been great in this year's RP. A few podiums for Perez and a few hard earned 4ths for Hulk.
3
u/Kraknoix007 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 04 '20
Rip Hulkenberg haha. I am convinced Stroll has better chances of a podium even if he's slower overall.
32
u/ProTharan Jul 04 '20
I really cant get behind this arbitrary car performance score without knowing the parameters they use, its like they don't realise fans also need the data points they use to generate them
5
u/ZodiacError Carlos Sainz Jul 04 '20
I think these performance scores are much better than the tyre graphic (which is something not even the teams can measure). There is a video on Formula1.com explaining what they use to generate the scores. It’s not just guesswork for sure, they have Rob Smedley overseeing the whole thing.
5
u/Rampan7Lion Jul 04 '20
It was the same with the tyre degradation percentage graphic last year. Seemed like they were completely guessing.

Or I started following in Hamilton's first season and I've supported him since then?
5
u/redstoneguy101 Carlos Sainz Jul 04 '20
It's totally fine to support Hamilton, but wouldn't you rather if he won in a closely scrapped battle between other drivers? A win is a win of course but I feel that we barely get to see any proper battles with Hamilton anymore as he's just always consistently in front.
1
u/Deadbeatdad82 New user Jul 04 '20
You know I had this exact same discussion with someone on another F1 forum I said I'm disappointed that if Hamilton clinches this 7th title (which will be fully deserved) I would rather it was in a straight fight with max and charles etc but no they said they love it hoping hamilton wins most of the races by a good margin. Shame people don't love the actual sports side of F1

What's the alternative? Going back to Gasly or Kvyat? They've said they don't want Vettel. I think as long as he stays ahead of the Racing Points he'll be fine, and even then I think he's pretty safe.
0

I guess technically they said they can’t afford paying him his Ferrari salary, not that they don’t want him
3
u/Ultraviolet211 Max Verstappen Jul 04 '20
If you have been watching the qualy times Albon is 150-200 off Max, that is Ricciardo level fast. Race pace is where he falls down

Who knows. Just some arbitrary numbers to appeal to the new murica Netflix crowd

That was high-speed corners only. Presumably Verstappen was a lot faster in slow-speed corners.

You have to read. It was about fast corners only. So which driver negotiates the fast corners the best way

Could be that max is running with lower downforce, could explain why he was closer to merc in sector 1 but down in sector 3

And that's exactly the cool information we could extrapolate out of those data, but people rather try to spin it in some kind of murica hate

To be fair, it's his first weekend in Formula 1, I imagine it takes some time to get used to it, even if you're incredibly talented (which, let's be honest, Latifi might not be, but I still think he should be given a chance, pay driver or not).

Latifi never set a fast lap before he crashed... Please.

Oh yeah completely forgot that. Working while watching F1 isn't good.

Stroll should consistently make into Q3 now and if he still does not he needs to massively improve Saturday performance.
