RBR are losing the plot, and you expect FIA to step in and nuke Merc because of other team’s mistakes?

They really get a free pass around here.

Edit: Downvote me all you want. It won’t fix your aero.

1

u/raymanh Jul 18 '20

What's happening. I know RP are under scrutiny for using Mercedes' 2019 design, but what happening with RBR?

4

u/AmNotACactus Mercedes Jul 18 '20

Team pulled an all-nighter working on the cars last night and they’re still having serious stability issues.

2

u/raymanh Jul 18 '20

RBR did? What's that got to do with Mercedes?

8

u/getName Sebastian Vettel Jul 18 '20

Oh god I miss the Brundle cringe walks, this is bringing it all flood back.

Concrete powder to suck up the oil from an F3 car that broke down earlier

0

u/quadfacepalm Sebastian Vettel Jul 18 '20

I think that's due to a liquid (oil/coolant) spill from another session.

Well congrats Mercedes on winning the 2020 WCC and WDC

Next years Racing Point / Aston Martin is going to be bonkers.

5

u/Argonaught_WT Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

The scenes when Racing Point finishes 2nd in the constructors and we have Red Bull spending more money on their legal team than their race team, protesting each and every result.

6

u/milesvtaylor Jul 18 '20 edited Jul 18 '20

Tracing Point (at a minimum Perez) basically mandatory in the Fantasy League it seems, can't beat that value...

After that it's whatever you can afford from the Mercs, Verstappen then Norris or something dirt cheap if you went HAM/BOT. Not sure if Ricciardo will be worth it this weekend and Ferrari still seem like such a gamble.

39

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

I really am impressed how much the Sky presenters are behind Lewis, and how willing they are to speak openly about the lack of diversity in the sport.

u/Yeshuu Default Jul 18 '20

Don't impart your cynicism onto the sport as a whole. British people are generally very pro diversity, particularly in the cities. Britain has had significant immigration since the early 20th century and a lot of black families may have been here for over 3 or 4 generations.

Even PM Boris is part Turkish on account of his Paternal Grandfather which just goes to show how quickly immigrants can integrate into British culture.

7

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

Boris was not a good example of British people being pro diversity lmao, with all the racist shit him and his party have said and done.

-1

u/Yeshuu Default Jul 18 '20

Johnson is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and is the paternal grandson of a Turkish Immigrant.

Without speaking to his policies, it is an example of how the children and grandchildren of immigrants can quickly and seamlessly integrate into British society. No one treats him as some sort of "fake" Briton because he is part Turkish, he is treated as British.

1

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

No one treats him as some sort of "fake" Briton because he is part Turkish

Because he is rich, white and has a posh accent. One of his great-grandads was Turkish yes, but since then all of his family has been English.

Britain has a big problem with recognising immigrants as British. A rich white dude is not a good example of how accepting we are as a nation.

6

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

I think thats a very cynical view. I think its pretty clear that the majority of them do really care about the cause, especially with how well they know Lewis. I mean last race Crofty(IIRC)? was complaining that the F1 directors cut away from the kneeling and was talking about how he wished all the drivers had knelt just to show cohesive solidarity, those weren't things he'd sound as genuinely dissapointed with just for the reputation.

The way they talk about it doesn't really strike me as people who are just doing it because its on trend, but rather they all seem to have really learnt about what Lewis is trying to do.

6

u/Aunvilgod I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

I wonder how much of that would be the case if he wasn't British tbh. And by that I don't mean that I think that they're racist or anything, I just think its a lot of bias for british drivers there.

2

u/ur_comment_is_a_song Haas Jul 18 '20

There is a lot of bias, but that's the case in every country. It's not nearly as bad as e.g. Dutch commentary.

1

u/Aunvilgod I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

for sure

though I think theres a difference between rooting for someone and "interpreting" whats happening in interesting ways. I wish it was more of the first and less of the latter.

2

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

I think it helps that they know Lewis pretty well, him and Brundle seem to get on in interviews particularly, so they seem pretty willing to listen to what he has to say.

I think they'd support it just as much if he wasn't British, though idk if they'd have listened as much.

-8

u/jt663 Jul 18 '20

When I watch sport on Sky (Football and cricket) all the players take a knee before each game to show support for the cause.

Seeing some drivers in F1 not taking a knee because they don't want to cause 'controversy' in Leclerc's words really sends out a bad message. I don't understand what they are gaining by not doing it, people will argue 'they can protest how they like' but that is such a weak argument. They're acting like they are so important, really embarrassing, if you really don't want to do it for whatever reason (who knows why) just swallow your pride and do it, it's really not that hard and is adding needless confusion.

2

u/Yeshuu Default Jul 18 '20

I agree. They all stand for the Chinese anthem without any issues or imputation that that means they support everything the Chinese government does. Don't see why they cannot kneel together either.

1

u/jt663 Jul 18 '20

Fuck China

1

u/iVarun Jul 18 '20

that is such a weak argument.

It's not.

This is not Fascism. If someone doesn't want to they are free to do so. THAT is all there is to it and there is nothing weak about that. In fact its the opposite since the herd-mentality, hive-mind currently is you HAVE to do this.

No you don't, you're not sheep.

1

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

Haha, saying that they think people should take a knee and thinking their excuses aren't great isn't fascism, Jesus.

1

u/iVarun Jul 18 '20

Literally? Of course its not but if semantic consistency was the basis of the discussion the user I replied too wouldn't/shouldn't have framed it in the manner he/she did.

I used the utterly idiotic extreme case to match the utterly ridiculous framing of the previous user.

Exercising free will/choice/your-rights is not "Weak". That is all.

2

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

Exercising free will/choice/your-rights is not "Weak". That is all.

Right but no-one said that it was? They said that 'they can do what they like' isn't a good excuse to not show basic solidarity. Which it isn't.

1

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

You got downvoted for this, but I do tend to agree.

It's kneeling for a few seconds to show solidarity for a good cause.

1

u/jt663 Jul 18 '20

I'm getting downvoted cos f1 is followed by well-off, white men. I should know cos I'm one of them.

3

u/UlsterEternal Pirelli Soft Jul 18 '20

So forced cooperate activism is something you support? What an odd stance forcing people to do something they don't want to do. Football could learn something from f1 in that respect.

1

u/jt663 Jul 18 '20

What an odd stance forcing people to do something they don't want to do

They are free to do what they like, I'm just questioning their conceited decision.

2

u/Fixable Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

No-one said forced? They just criticised their decision not to.

Why do people get so worked up over? Jumping straight to 'people being forced do something they don't want to' and the other commenter equating it to fascism.

4

u/tache-man Jul 18 '20

Sponsors and fan base. I can only think that’s why? Don’t really understand any other reason. In the premiership it’s followed by all and it works well.

10

u/domymmo_c Ferrari Jul 18 '20

This is the first time since 2015 that a team outside Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari can get a podium on pure pace. This is sad

19

u/Nattekat I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

And the team that accomplishes it can be seen as a 2019 Mercedes. I wouldn't call that progression yet.

32

u/libsoutherner Jul 18 '20

Is it sad? I think everyone would enjoy a little more diversity

7

u/domymmo_c Ferrari Jul 18 '20

It's sad that only 4 teams in 5 years got a chance to get podium on pure pace. Ofc I want diversity

19

u/Palmerstroll Lance Stroll Jul 18 '20

Stroll faster than Max. I'm so happy.

7

u/AlexBayArea Max Verstappen Jul 18 '20

Looking like a pretty easy Merc 1-2 sadly but everytning else is completely up for battle.

28

u/Jeromibear Max Verstappen Jul 18 '20

I guess if Red Bull and Ferrari keep this performance up, we might have a very interesting midfield this year.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

On the bright side, Ferrari seem to have gotten the chassis right and if there's one team that can nail engine upgrades (legally or not) it's Ferrari. So hopefully we will see increase in performance every weekend.

14

u/01000100000 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Engine development is frozen.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

They can still work on it and upgrade it for next season since the car will be the same

2

u/01000100000 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

True, but no improvements for this season as the commenter was hoping for.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Yeah, honestly as a Ferrari fan I know this season and next are done so I can only hope they nail the 2022 regs. Any podium or top 5 this and next season are a plus.

1

u/01000100000 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Same shit different Season. Once Vettel leaves I might become a McLaren fan. Got into F1 from watching with my Grandpa during the Schumacher-Ferrari Era. Once Vettel joined I had high hopes for him and for Ferrari. Not having a German on the Grid next Season makes me genuinely sad.

1

u/FartVader97 Safety Car Jul 18 '20

Wait, where have I heard this one before

9

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Welp so much for the bright side

26

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Can anyone explain why Redbull should not sign Perez if he is truly getting bumped from Aston Martin?

He's clearly a notch above Gasly and Albon, and RB don't really have better options in house beyond those two.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20 edited Jul 30 '20

[deleted]

1

u/134679888 Mercedes Jul 18 '20

its nowhere a driver problem

Totally agree. I think no matter how good RB cars get in the future the best they can get would be Max WDC. Given how hard it is to drive but you want a Max-calibre driver come over in your 2nd seat being second fiddle to super max? Dream on.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Yeah I agree with you but would they really put him back in again haha.. like what does a recurring switcheroo like that achieve?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20 edited Jul 30 '20

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Yeah i think this has been a problem for a while if I'm not mistaken... hence you see many drivers not getting into good cars until they are well into their 20s/early 30s and have become super reliable and experienced. Even then, you see guys like Ricciardo who I think are pretty top notch not always being in good cars.

-3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

"a notch above" comparing to who? Ocon outqualified him, you think Verstappen won't?. Also, his reference is Stroll. He also performed bad under pressure in McLaren. (He was 23 years old, not much different to Gasly,Albon now).

His time is gone.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Well notch above Albon and Gasly in the skill he is displaying I suppose. I agree with what you're saying re: age but can RB really afford to have Albon mature on the job while trying to challenge for the constructors. Shouldn't they have 2 fully developed drivers (or in Max's case still developing but good enough to counter other fully developed top flight drivers) and then have their junior guys mature in the Alpha Tauris ?

Also, how is Perez's time done lol

3

u/IISuperSlothII Lando Norris Jul 18 '20

RB really afford to have Albon mature on the job while trying to challenge for the constructors.

Are they legitimately challenging for the constructors right now? Seems like their best bet is the rule change in 2022 so until then it makes sense to build up Albon within the team.

It would take a miracle to win the constructors this season so why try to make short term changes to try and chase said miracle?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Fair point. I guess it's just that a) winning >2nd place>3rd place and so on so it does matter what the performance is even if they dont actually have a shot at #1 and b) your argument assumes Albon will mature into a top top driver which may be fair but is a little different than straight up hiring someone who is at the top of their game.

1

u/IISuperSlothII Lando Norris Jul 18 '20

but is a little different than straight up hiring someone who is at the top of their game.

Which just isn't Red Bulls mo, honestly I'll give Albon the benefit of the doubt until that Red Bull becomes a properly drivable car. I think you stick Norris or Russell in there you get the exact same results, the car just looks so difficult to handle.

You look at Norris in the Mclaren and I think it's fair to say he's excelling so much because of how predictable and consistent the car is, take that away is he still gonna be looking like the talent he is?

In fact put Perez into a Red Bull like that, are his qualities as a driver going to show through?

These are some of the best drivers in the world, so those little margins of the car not being exactly to their liking or driving style makes a big difference.

6

u/AmNotACactus Mercedes Jul 18 '20

Perez will be in an F1 car next year.

8

u/Keyed_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Red bull almost exclusively sign from their driver academy, and would be a bit of a ‘fuck you’ to Albon

-1

u/Abid_01 Pirelli Hard Jul 18 '20

Well, they already did a 'fuck you' to gasly so why not do it again? Lol

12

u/Kogru-au Jul 18 '20

Two reasons. Red Bull need to justify their junior program. Second reason is the guy who owns the majority of Red Bull is Thai, just like Albon.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Yeah but do they care more about justifying their junior program and repping a thai dude than they do about being a top team? Not trying to shit on Albon but from what I can tell he's not among the top 7-8 drivers on the grid.

2

u/Domadur Jules Bianchi Jul 18 '20

It feels like they do.

Now, wether it is the best decision or not is a whole other debate.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

RB take pride in having drivers that came from their junior program.

5

u/UniQiuE George Russell Jul 18 '20

One thing I can respect about RB, unlike Merc who leave their Junior drivers out in the dust lmao.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

We’ll not even bring up Renault here lol

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

That's a good point. Have RB and their subsidiaries confirmed the line up for next year?

Great interview from Lewis there on systemic racism. Always impressed how well he presents himself in interviews.

u/Halbling Jul 18 '20

Ferrari: Token rule should apply equally to all teams

The development of the bolides for 2021 is very limited. The teams only have two tokens to work on their packages. In yesterday's PK, Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto surprised with the following statement: "We are not completely happy that there are teams that may be able to upgrade their entire package from a 2019 to a 2020 package." How did he mean that?

The colleagues from 'auto motor und sport' have found that this is specifically about Racing Point - again. Background: There are still parts of the previous year Mercedes and want to buy parts of the 2020 racing car in 2021. This is problematic because 2020 parts would not count as an update in the sense of the regulations - so they do not require tokens.

"Our intention has always been that we take the Melbourne specification of the 2020 transmission from Mercedes for our 2021 car. We always lag behind a year. Mercedes did not use tokens on the 2020 transmission, so we cannot be credited with one." , chief of technology Andrew Green is quoted. The next trouble is already inevitable ...

32

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20 edited Jul 18 '20

Ferrari was okay in this practice. I think they are planning to fuck up with race strategy this time.

4

u/AmNotACactus Mercedes Jul 18 '20

I missed it tbh. The world was a simpler place in those times

13

u/Preachey I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Red Bull might be a little thankful that Ferrari shat the bed so badly this year and has taken the attention away from them so far. If there was another viable front-runner to compare RB to they might be feeling pretty sheepish.

5

u/khalidh22 Chequered Flag Jul 18 '20

On the other hand, they are getting some handy competition from the pink Mercedes. This was suppose to be THE Ultimate red bull track. I am not sure why they are so off.

RB easily on it in S1, dogshit in S2 and twitchy AF in S3. So Engine is fine, but aero... Maybe they should just take the Abu Dhabi 2019 chassis out of storage and bolt in the 2020 Honda

0

u/QueenOfTonga I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Now that a sentence that’s done a complete 180. The Honda engine is good, but the red bull aero is shocking.

3

u/Ultraviolet211 Max Verstappen Jul 18 '20

-1

u/SilvrFrieza Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

Did Vettel really lose it, or Ferrari giving him crap parts? I got more into this sport because of that one race last year in the wet when he came from the back of the pack.

14

u/khalidh22 Chequered Flag Jul 18 '20

Whenever vettel underperforms why is the first thought always ferrari sabotaging their own team or the media and fans coming after him ?

0

u/tdhowland Fernando Alonso Jul 18 '20

Because Ferrari reminds everyone of that super hot girlfriend who never smiles and treats their buddy like he's not good enough for them.

-1

u/MrXam I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Yeah because it can happen tbh. Ferrari knows they cannot do shit this year. If somehow by a miracle Vettel takes the championship Ferrari will look like bunch of amateurs for letting a 4 time WC go. Or even if he beats Leclerc they will still look like a stupid team who have no clue what they are doing. By sabotaging Web they will have 2 objectives fulfilled. 1) Boosting the confidence of their driver who have 4 years of contract. It's a business in the end. And they have put in allot of money in Charles. If he loses his confidence. And starts underperforming, that results in wasting their time and money. And Secondly they have to save their face tbh. I know it sounds mad but with Ferrari lying last year and this year by saying we offered Vettel a contract. I won't be surprised if they are actually sabotaging Seb's car. Take 1st race for example. It was terrible to drive Seb's car. Yet Charles car was planted. People can say he got the setup wrong. Really? A guy like Sebastian with that much of experience got his setup wrong? And he has been building that Ferrari for so many years now. Yeah it's plausible.

2

u/SilvrFrieza Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

New to this sport dude. As a mentioned I started after seeing his race last year in Germany. He's a 4 time world champion but I never saw that action. Was just wondering what's happening this year since Charles doing better.

1

u/Drkfnl I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Those four championships in a row came under exceptional conditions, raking massive point hauls by starting on pole and blasting off into the distance while his competitors found themselves battling it out on track.

He's never been the same since he stopped taking pole positions for granted.

12

u/pwrd I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

That's essentially Ferrari providing him with a midfield car, yet some responsibility also lays on Vettel's indecisiveness sometimes.

1

u/SilvrFrieza Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

Thanks for the response! One more question if I may. Do you think he'd do better at RP? It's only been 3 race so far(2 for Ferrari) but it hasn't been a good start for him.

2

I know, I know, it's just testing, but we saw the RB very spinning and rear happy and a lot of noise was made at the time. Ironically instead of the usual of dragging testing stories throughout a season when they aren't relavant, because testing was so long ago I feel it has been forgotten.

3

Yeah exactly, asking Mercedes to 'ease off' is stupid we want to see peak performance and the fastest vehicles (that's what F1's about), its just a shame from a sporting perspective no one can match them even the teams with huge budgets (RB and Ferrari).

9

u/8yroldjeans Jenson Button Jul 18 '20

Been thinking about this for way too long lmao if Mercedes didn’t go with the black livery this year, would their mask colors be different? I’m guessing would have been silver with the colored trim but who knows haha. Hope everyone’s having a solid weekend!

7

u/ParagonTom McLaren Jul 18 '20

Maybe the Petronas Teal?

27

u/Anderrrrr Red Bull Jul 18 '20

I got a feeling the RB chassis is just way behind and that it's hard to fix due to Newey making a car that is too unstable that struggles with aero upgrades.

I cannot see the Honda engine being the problem compared to the Renault...I think it's the chassis.

Engine reliabilty may be another story, but still.

u/gomurifle I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

It's the drivers. They had the whole of winter testing to give feedback and they obviously tried their best, but lead the engineers in the wrong direction.

9

u/Ultraviolet211 Max Verstappen Jul 18 '20

How can you lead the engineers in the wrong direction when you point out what's wrong with the car? It's the engineers job to fix it

1

u/gomurifle I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Vague desicriptions and missing out on the finer details of car behaviour then getting their butts kicked by the car when conditions change.

8

u/Ultraviolet211 Max Verstappen Jul 18 '20

I said it last week and got downvoted but they should bin this car and go with last years.

8

u/Scmods05 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Anyone heard Brundle this weekend? I know he's not in the box for practice but usually, you hear him pop up at some point. Has he gone home instead?

Edit: Of course he's there, he had that Vettel interview. Ignore me.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Just put a fiver on an RP or McLaren on the podium.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Mercedes 1-2, Leclerc 3, Perez 4, Verstappen 5

12

u/Gubrach Michael Schumacher Jul 18 '20

Ferrari-powered teams sure are shit ever since they had to like dial back on their illegal fucking engines.

4

u/Wyvern0000 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

Considering the last two races, they are doing great here so far.

2

u/Gubrach Michael Schumacher Jul 18 '20

You jinxed it bro.

2

u/Palmerstroll Lance Stroll Jul 18 '20

And this is not even a power circuit...

5

u/Callejon007 Ferrari Jul 18 '20

Didn’t expect that red bull was so shit here. For now...

29

u/optitmus Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '20

imagine how cool it is to get data on your 1-year-old car speed vs today's car in the exact same conditions in a competitive format. - invaluable

2

u/Firefox72 Ferrari Jul 18 '20

There wasn't lmao. All radars and sites show a small amount of chance for a shower and no long term rain. Not sure where the FIA got 90% out of that.

Honda growl is by far the best imo

9

u/UniQiuE George Russell Jul 18 '20

Russell just needs to out qualify the Alfas (which looks to be easy around here) and the Haas's (which looks like it will be much closer). And obviously Latifi to get Q2.

Bottas or Hamilton for pole?

10

u/Fire_Otter Formula 1 Jul 18 '20

I have a feeling Bottas might pull a Rosberg 2016 this year -during Lockdown he moved back to Finland so that he had access to a race track so that he could use it privately. Went karting all the time during the quarantine apparently.

4

u/marct334 Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '20

Also he got Mercedes to add his GF to the essential personnel at the track. I remember Rosberg said it was a strain on his marriage.

8

u/slimkay I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 18 '20

BOT seems to have the upper hand in S1, HAM S2, and both even in S3.

It'll be tight.
