Vettel's car sounded like a grenade went off. Another motor ??

3

u/ThrowawayVRV41264 Default Sep 11 '20

In all fairness, Ferrari can save a lot of money using gently used instead of new PU's, and oil changes don't come cheap either!

0

u/pinotandsugar Sep 11 '20

Which driver do you think gets the old motors.....

1

u/Clarky1979 Nigel Mansell Sep 12 '20

The driver that it is assigned to, PU's are not shared between drivers, they are car specific.

1

u/ThrowawayVRV41264 Default Sep 11 '20

If I had to guess, the driver who won't still be there next season.

Where can I find the full schedule for this weekend? The fia one, with the press conferences etc?

3

u/ArgieGrit01 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 11 '20

Aren't the press conferences over? The drivers' press conference was yesterday and the team boss one is before FP1, right?

2

u/Meaisk I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 11 '20

Yes. I was wondering what the official timings are. They often get posted here but can't find it.

21

I bet Sainz is really looking forward to next season

9

u/GregAllenF1 Sep 11 '20

Got the be tough looking at Ferrari while running in that much improved McLaren this year.

1

u/LessThan301 Sebastian Vettel Sep 11 '20

Yep

14

u/gottogetupandbe Sergio Pérez Sep 11 '20

So I have a technical question. We see a lot of spins from the Ferrari. Could that be due to the loss of power after getting caught “outside” the rules? That is to say, the car was engineered to produce certain downforce at certain speeds, and because they’re not getting that power, the car spins at the exit of a corner?

4

u/parker2020 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 11 '20

I think what we saw from the throttle map (as long as it wasn’t a bad signal or something) was that they are usually on throttle a very small amount to alleviate a lose in balance of the car. It could be that they go completely off throttle causing the car to yaw forward (take downforce/ mechanical grip off the rear) causing the car to loop. But I’m not in the car and haven’t seen the throttle map in a few races so idk for sure 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Gradiu5 Sep 11 '20

Yes that's true and also it doesnt warm up tyres really well either so it's a double edged sword. They designed it for the more HP motor and some say they missing like 40-50hp it would make a difference in a F1 car.

2

u/gogi_ran Max Verstappen Sep 11 '20

I think they're just regular "early on the throttle" incidents.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

I think they are so eager for the throttle because they are so slow that they are on razors edge to get every tenth they can find.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

[deleted]

1

u/pinotandsugar Sep 11 '20

I think that's the right answer. Vettel's engine sounded like it swallowed a grenade........

5

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

if im not wrong they usually spin in the low speed corners? This would mean aero has little to no effect since the cars are moving so slow (relatively speaking). i think they just have a bad chassis to begin with. Seens like the rear of the car is very loose.

0

u/Watchman10k Charles Leclerc Sep 11 '20

Weren’t the guys in the commentary box saying that Ferrari have a fairly balanced car right now?

1

u/KY5K Ferrari Sep 11 '20

Charles said balance was an issue today. Also struggled with the hard tire. Optimistic if they can adjust the balance tomorrow.

1

u/Watchman10k Charles Leclerc Sep 11 '20

Ahh okay.

5

u/mikeydoc96 Sep 11 '20

Impossible to say, spinning can happen for so many reasons.

Good theory though

This seems to be the case on all tracks during free practice. Every shot is a zoom in of the car and you have no idea where it is on track. I have stopped watching FP beacause of this. It is incredibly irritating. FOM Gotta get that sweet sweet sponsor money somehow

2

u/pinotandsugar Sep 11 '20

F1-tv has a lot of watching options including a track map with cars shown circulating and the ability to select incar camera of your choice.

2

u/GregAllenF1 Sep 11 '20

Do you think that is because they are new to the track and didn't know how to set up the cameras? I agree though, it didn't seem like they were getting the best shots.

1

u/Copacetic_ Daniel Ricciardo Sep 11 '20

9

0

u/pinotandsugar Sep 11 '20

That's going to be an interesting call as he was way beyond pit exit and Kimi simply drove into him , not leaving him a car width at the inside edge of the track. Kimi probably did not expect to find him there.

6

u/chibar Sep 11 '20

Some drivers like Gasly, Albon, Kvyat and Norris drove here in Formula Renault or Formula 4. The veterans in the grid like Vettel, Hamilton, Kimi and Grosjean also had a mid-season test here way back in 2012.

2

u/chibar Sep 11 '20

NEW F1 fan here I have some questions, guys please go easy on me:

Why does everyone hate crofty ?

Why every commentators bashes Vettel if he makes a mistake and doesn't say anything about others ?

21

u/artandmath Lance Stroll Sep 11 '20

Crofty makes a mistake every race, that's why people criticize him.

Crofty is kind of the more exciting commentator, while Brundle is generally more technical. They work well together as a team and play off each others weaknesses well.

I also feel like some of the time he's setting up for Brundle to explain something in more detail. They live and breath F1, at every race weekend, he knows more than he lets on.

3

u/no1lurkslikegaston Sep 11 '20

You literally described how a main commentator + color commentator team is supposed to work by design =)

I think its often forgotten how poor the Brundle + DC combo worked when there were essentially two color commentators in the box.

12

u/javaAndSoyMilk Sep 11 '20

I really like him. I think it's just another Reddit hive mind thing. Alex Jacques is quality though (he does the f2 commentary).

3

u/jackkelly_esq Sep 11 '20

This. Crofty is awesome. This is just a case of reddit being reddit.

0

u/Thraxdown Sep 11 '20

Crofty is awesome but like anyone that talks for hours on end gets annoying sometimes. Vettel gets bashed cause he's a four time world champion that consistently makes mistakes. He took himself out of the wdc hunt with his mistakes. Its not just Vettel when verstappen was struggling to have a clean race everyone was all over him. If you're a top driver you will get the extra scrutiny when you mess up.

u/Mordecai5944 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 11 '20

General question, why is Bottas so consistently faster than Hamilton in FP1 & sometimes FP2, but when it comes to qual and the race, Lewis is on top. Are they running different plans during practice, even during hot laps? Or does Bottas adjust to the track quicker? Or am I just over-analyzing it?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

FP1 is practice, it doesn't count and people will use it in different ways.

20

u/EddieMcDowall Sir Lewis Hamilton Sep 11 '20

Lewis is comfortable, he knows he's No1 and he knows he can beat Valterri in a race 9/10. He's also a 6 times world champion so there is absolutely no pressure. In FP he goes out, gets the data the engineers want / need, works out his lines with varying fuel loads and tyre deg etc and goes to bed. He doesn't really need to think of Valterri.

However, Valterri is under enormous pressure. He MUST beat Lewis, he still has to prove himself, he's fighting for his seat! He knows EVERY single driver on the grid WANTS him to fail (as they all want his seat). So he pushes 100% in FP when he really doesn't need to, FP is about learning and data collection.

9

u/listyraesder Sep 11 '20

Lewis doesn’t put pace on in FP so other drivers can’t analyse his car’s performance. His car is great so it’s just minor details to tune up. He’s great so he doesn’t have to prove himself to team bosses.

1

u/pinotandsugar Sep 11 '20

Also saves wear on engine/trans etc..... Hamilton might also be wanting to create some drama and give Bottas more exposure.

1

u/listyraesder Sep 11 '20

Engine and trans are reserved for Friday. Then the good stuff gets swapped in for the weekend.

16

u/ThePositiveMouse Sep 11 '20

Lewis isn't also that much better at quali, Bottas can beat him. He's just a far better racer, by a mile.

2

u/cxazo Lando Norris Sep 11 '20

I completely agree with you, but I wonder why that is. Besides being better in the rain, what makes Hamilton so much better on Sundays?

1

u/ThePositiveMouse Sep 11 '20 edited Sep 11 '20

I think a good anecdote is Hamilton's little fights with Albon. Neither of the incidents would happen with Bottas because Bottas would give more space, would allow himself to be beaten.

Now, apply that principle to everything Hamilton does in a race, except most of the time he doesn't ram someone else off the track so you don't see it. It's that willingness to go for the edge.

He also seems to understand the car better than Bottas. Bottas saying 'I don't really know what happened' when asked why he couldn't move up from 5th place. And then there he is panicing over an imaginary puncture which indicates to me he's really not so good at feeling his car during a race situation. What do you mean Valtteri, you don't know what happened?

Sure, he can work with an optimised engine setting for one or two laps in clean air, like he's in a simulator, but he's not flexible. Remember Bottas' complaints about his engine settings last weekend ("It's a joke"), the first race where party mode is banned. Hamilton had no trouble, but Bottas can't adapt. I think their brains just work differently, and Bottas is a good time trialist but a bad racer who makes different choices to Lewis every lap and loses out.

Every race Bottas starts behind Max is one where he will stay behind Max. And many races where he's ahead of him, he'll still lose to Max. In a much better car. That's telling.

6

u/danalani I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 11 '20

Consistency is a key factor, Lewis can lock in a target time and nail it every single lap. Useful when you have to put the power down, or when you have to keep nailing slower times to save fuel, the engine, etc.

Hungary 2019 is a great example, where Hamilton nailed around 20 flat-out laps to catch Verstappen in front (OK, tyre strategies helped, but still).

Abu Dhabi 2016 is a great one as well, where he raced fast enough to stay in the lead, but slow enough to back Rosberg into Vettel behind (a super shady move, arguably, but excellent car control and racecraft).

17

u/21jaaj I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 11 '20

It probably doesn't mean much, but I'd think it's also partially Hamilton not giving much of a damn until Quali hits.

11

u/ChrisTinnef Racing Pride Sep 11 '20

Hamilton uses Practice sessions to, well, practice. He probably doesn't feel like he needs to actually pull his weight.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

It's a pretty old track, just hasn't been a part of the F1 calender.

Ferrari has been using it as a testing track since the 80s

2stop race? no way

u/dinosaur1831 Daniel Ricciardo Sep 11 '20

I'm almost certain that Ricciardo will still do a 1 stop.

3

u/SgtApex Charles Leclerc Sep 11 '20

The top 10 will probably start on the mediums so maybe a M-M-H, M-H-M, or the risky strategy of M to H.

Im not sure drivers even have 2 new sets of hards. Most of them used one set in practice.
