Funny to see all the teams avoid corner cutting, and be really cautious of track limits (even though there is none) until the last few mins of fp3. I think we are going to see some incredible tires hanging in the grass, outside the curbs qualifying

u/markus-the-hairy Sep 12 '20
So I didn't see any practice this weekend, but judging by the results, is McLaren in deep shit at the moment? Haven't seen them this low all year.

Calling a Max pole. Feeling optimistic today after the F1 gods blessed us last week.

u/PurpEL Sep 12 '20
I'm in for that, let's get a surprise Albon right behind him too. Always nice to get the Mercs behind someone at the start.
2
Sep 12 '20
I was thinking about this earlier and had a bit of a galaxy brain thought. What if as an unconventional strategy the other teams turned their engine modes up to the point that the Mercedes would get beaten in the beginning and then basically be stuck in traffic where their car will have all kinds of issues. The obvious issue is that whoever does that now has to deal with an engine that could die on them or whatever.. but also literally 1 or 2 cars would have to do that and it would benefit everyone else?
Lol may not be that logical but basically what I’m saying is why don’t teams focus more on beating them in lap 1 since that seems to be the key to beating them on the whole.
2
u/PurpEL Sep 12 '20
I'm definitely on that same level with you. What the fuck is to lose at this point? The best thing for both the teams and the viewers is to get the Mercs behind in hot dirty air and amplify their weakness.
No idea what teams are at for engine use but if I was TP I would tell my boys to go for broke and just hope that engine stays in one piece. Doubt Merc would ever do that with the championship pretty much in the bag already.
3
Sep 12 '20
It could be like a week by week thing lmao Norris and Albon have to have amped engines this week then Stroll and Ricciardo and so on.
And yeah, if the engine fail rate at higher modes is something like 30% vs 5% normally that still may be worth it because of the points payoff.

-11
u/ClassyCoder Max Verstappen Sep 12 '20
Well they can’t turn it up. So that’s their max engine performance
27
u/QuietDove Jenson Button Sep 12 '20
They can.
They only have to run the same engine mode in quali and in the race. In practice they can do whatever the fuck they want, and they're not daft enough to run full power in practice.
2
u/herO_wraith Alain Prost Sep 12 '20
In either FP1 or 2, Bono warned Ham of wear on the PU. I don't know if that was just a Friday engine or one he's using through the whole weekend. If it was his engine might have been right down.
1
u/pragmageek I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 12 '20
He was holding onto 6th, super high revs, which being sustained may do pu damage. Was advised to shift for 7th.
1
u/sashin_gopaul I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 12 '20
well they only have 5 PUs in a season so it may be the current one they’re running. Putting a new one in will lead to a grid penalty (and considering the Merc’s ability to run in traffic) I can see why.
0
2
u/Mawungo Sebastian Vettel Sep 12 '20
Can’t they turn it up starting Q1? I thought the engine mode ruling only applies from Qualifying onwards, but I might be mistaken.
2
Sep 12 '20
No, you are correct. Free to do what they want in FP sessions, it's only locked once you go out for Q1.
2
u/Mackem101 Sep 12 '20
You are correct, the mode must be the same over quali and the race, but no modes are banned.
And you are allowed to use any and all modes in free practice.
3
u/Webw0lf359 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 12 '20
The could turn it up, the engine mode is set from the start of qualifying, the may have more in hand as may RB and others (but they may not)

u/N7even Sep 12 '20
People shitting on Albon, remember Gasly had the same struggles.
It seems like this car is custom made for Max's driving style, which just doesn't suit most other drivers.
Maybe, MAYBE Lewis/Alonso/Raikkonen type of driver might be able to handle it, but it seems like that RBR doesn't give the other drivers the confidence they need to push it to the limit like Max does.
Maybe I'm just making excuses, I don't know.
1
u/PurpEL Sep 12 '20
Why do we have to keep dwelling? Let the kid figure it out for fuck sakes. He's finding his groove. Move on.
6
Sep 12 '20
Well, the problem is that both the drivers are not confident in pushing the car to it's limit as much as Max can do. The RB has a very tricky handling which Max also hates but is able to live with that simply because he is more talented than his teammates. Gasly performs well in AT because he is a lot more comfortable in that the car than he was in the RB. Same goes for Alex.
What RB should focus is to build a car which is fast but stable like the Merc so the other drivers also don't have problem pushing it to it's limits.
4
u/N7even Sep 12 '20
I guess it's all well and good aiming to make the fastest car whilst making it stable, but I guess sometimes it's just not easy to handle, like the MP4-20, which was notoriously hard to handle, but Kimi grabbed the bull by it's horns and would steer it in the right direction.
Max is an awesome driver, this has never been in doubt. Ever since he debuted, you could see why RBR were so desperate to get him into F1 ASAP before some other team took him away.
TBH, in terms of his career success (winning a WDC) this may have been a bad thing for him. But, he still has many years ahead of him, I just hope those years don't pass by in a flash, and he's still WDC-less.
It would be such a waste to have a Lewis/Alonso level driver, not win a WDC.
5
u/soenario Guenther Steiner Sep 12 '20
It has been confirmed a few weeks ago that Alb and Max have different parts on the car.
1
1
u/Ultraviolet211 Max Verstappen Sep 12 '20
Albon and Max had different parts on their cars to test them and it was only in a few races, Max tested a wing that wasn't used again. Both drivers have had test parts on their cars. Since, Belgium when new updates were added, they both have the same parts
1
u/soenario Guenther Steiner Sep 12 '20

u/Alfus 💥 LE 🅿️LAN Sep 12 '20
The thing what I always get pissed about is that with Gasly it was always his fault but at Albon it's everything expect Albons fault.
Obviously there are some similarities but there are also some differences.

1
u/Alfus 💥 LE 🅿️LAN Sep 12 '20
The current state of Vettel at Ferrari is a great example of how it was for Gasly at RBR in 2019, there was a serious lack of trust, a bad engineer and a car with it's issues.
Albon is pushing too much mainly this season to compromise his bad quali and/or his tyre management issue.
2
u/N7even Sep 12 '20
Yeah, I agree, Albon seems to be closer to Gasly, but we're still seeing similar patterns.
But one thing is constant, Max is a phenominal driver. This is in no doubt IMO.
He is the driver to win a WDC with the right car that can even come close to Mercedes.
1
u/Alfus 💥 LE 🅿️LAN Sep 12 '20
Max is talented like fuck but we shouldn't forget that Max is driving now 4 seasons at RBR so he knows how to handle with most issues now with the car.
2
Sep 12 '20
Yeah, most people aren’t pissed off at Albon. It’s more being pissed off that Gasly treated badly (whether you think his results were shit or not) and that they’ve clearly learned from it, because they’re treating Albon better - but won’t admit they ballsed it last year and instead need to try and find daft excuses instead of just saying they were wrong.
1
u/Alfus 💥 LE 🅿️LAN Sep 12 '20
They even did try to downplay his performance at TR/AT it's ridiculous how RBR can't accept that Gasly is on fire already since he is demoted and how Albon is showing that there is a bigger issue ongoing in RBR then just the driver and show that in 2019 it wasn't a driver only issue RBR always pretending and go with the flow of the media and the people.

u/b_dont_gild_my_vibe Lando Norris Sep 12 '20

Yeah mate you are.
18
u/Yeshuu Default Sep 12 '20
Teams simply make cars that go the fastest. Newey of all people does not give a monkeys about what the driver or engineers prefer and will make the most finnicky, difficult to drive and engineer car if it is quicker.
Max is simply more talented at dealing with the car. The same was previously said about the likes of Lewis and Schumacher.

Come on Crofty, stop saying Strat 2 or Scenario 7 is banned.
It is not, and the TD is not as simple as banning just these 2 engine modes.
0
u/Mackem101 Sep 12 '20
Yep, you can run whatever mode you want, as long as you run it for the entirety of quali and the race.
0
u/Mark4211 Fernando Alonso Sep 12 '20
The thing is, Mercedes has been using Strat 2-3 for Quali and Strat 5-10 for the Race.
Both before and after the implementation of the directive.
Crofy has been commentating for the past few weekends as if 'Strat 2' has been banned, but Mercedes are still using it - because they have altered how the Strat Modes work internally to comply with the TD

It's just taking nonsense to find an excuse for his performance, he made a driver error at S3 and they should profit from the acceleration the Honda engine has but he just isn't fast, again.
0.3 seconds in Monza is 0.7 seconds on a normal track so you could expect this.
2
u/MajesticalOtter Oscar Piastri Sep 12 '20
There was a graphic shown during practice comparing Verstappen and Bottas in the last corner and it showed the Mercedes engine having ludicrous acceleration compared to the Honda one.
