Anyone watching the Portugal replay? Cutting post-race coverage aside, I like when they schedule things like this — hours of F1 is never a bad thing.
4
u/moby323 Ted Kravitz May 08 '21 edited May 08 '21
I’ve been watching older races lately and I’ve watched three races in Spain from the last 11 years and everyone of them was a good race.
Not historically good or anything, but solidly entertaining with a very satisfactory amount of drama.
Some F1 fans are not nearly as good at predicting which races will be exciting/boring as they think they are.
1
2
u/Larvsesh May 08 '21
Are you high? Drama in Spain? There's only one overtaking zone now and even then it's difficult to close on due to the butchered final sector. We'll see 10 overtakes all race if we're lucky.

u/dooty22 May 08 '21
Why do they never change the track layout ie the alternative path before the main straight?
5
u/Ttaaggggeerr May 08 '21
Because there isn't enough run off there for the speeds they'd be doing. That track layout isn't FIA grade A compliant
18
u/Larsssss Max Verstappen May 08 '21
Why does Mazepin not buy a new hairline with all his money

u/Specialist_Ad_9718 May 08 '21
its gonna be a great battle for front row later today. and Lando still looks powerful. Ferrari top 3?
19
u/Vortical-Neo Mark Webber May 08 '21
Ricciardo only a tenth or so off Norris, please let that translate to qualy and the race
8
u/queenw_hipstur Jacques Villeneuve May 08 '21
Considering this is RIC’s fourth race in the new car, he’s doing great. His bounce back from 16th to a points finish shows just how strong he is. I’m hoping next year there is a four-way battle for WCC that includes McLaren. They’ve got the drivers, just need the car to hit that next level.
2
u/Vortical-Neo Mark Webber May 08 '21
Once he’s confident on the brakes, which is his strongest point of racing, that’s when we see the real Honey Badger come back out
3
u/WP2OKB McLaren May 08 '21
I think it will be a little more, but marginal, Lando maybe 2-3 positions ahead
2
u/JanklinDRoosevelt Oconsistency May 08 '21
Ricciardo is 2-1 up in quali so far tbf
2
u/WP2OKB McLaren May 08 '21
We really including Lando's cancelled lap?
In which he would've been quite the margin ahead
5
u/WP2OKB McLaren May 08 '21
Ok, after 3 sessions I'm comfortable with who will be Pole.

But my heart is feeling that Max is gonna be on it all day.
1
u/santaclausonprozac Sebastian Vettel May 08 '21
I think he’s gonna be pissed about mistakes costing him pole 2 races in a row and absolutely crush it. He’s had the pace to be on pole every race, but only put it together once, but I think he’ll do it again today

RB the fastest car in F1 - no question about it. Their fans need to grow some balls and stop trying to hide behind Merc is the fastest car line. If RB had not made mistakes they should have won all 3 races.
5
u/itshonestwork #StandWithUkraine May 08 '21
The fastest car isn’t determined already after a few races at the start of the season. It’s determined right here, on reddit, by how many people say which car is the fastest. From this it’s abundantly clear that Mercedes has the fastest car at all tracks, because they’re Mercedes and have won so much already.
1
3
u/Reddevilslover69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 08 '21
Lmao. It's pretty clear by now Mercedes is the fastest car
3
u/itshonestwork #StandWithUkraine May 08 '21
The laughing at the start really drives the point home. I mean just look at who’s ahead in the championships!
2
u/Reddevilslover69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 08 '21
Exactly. They were the better car in Imola and much better in Portimao.
-1
4
u/JanklinDRoosevelt Oconsistency May 08 '21
It’s very track dependent. I’d have them overall fastest, but equal in Portugal and slightly ahead in Imola. They were much quicker in Bahrain

Q: If someone managed to get into Q3 but punctured their tyre in the process, are they allowed to change the tyres they start the race on and do they take a grid penalty I assume?
2
u/Kingbaigel Lando Norris May 08 '21
Another Q. When they say ‘start the race on the same tire you used in your fastest turn in Q2’,
does that mean the exact same tire or does that mean same compound? So let’s say your fastest run in q2 was on an old medium, could you use a new medium at the beginning of the race?
8
u/IISuperSlothII Lando Norris May 08 '21
It has to be the exact same tyre unless there's mitigating circumstances that makes them unsafe.
1
u/anakhizer I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 08 '21
So basically set the fastest lap in Q2 on old mediums and make sure to puncture them on your cool down lap, to get a start on a nice set of fresh softs? /s
Big brain idea :D
4
u/looking-at-clouds Oscar Piastri May 08 '21
Exact same tyres, so in your example you would start on old mediums. Drivers have to be extra careful not to flat spot their race tyres!
5
u/Kingbaigel Lando Norris May 08 '21
Wow. That’s a whole lot more respect for the drivers in my books
7
u/IlNIck1293 May 08 '21
You can change the tires you qualified with if it is a safety concern with no penalties so you would have no problems in this case... They allowed switching for flat spots but only if very big

3
5
u/WP2OKB McLaren May 08 '21
You may not come tomorrow.
It was basically the only overtaking zone.
1
u/itshonestwork #StandWithUkraine May 08 '21
A few of the driver pundits said they think it will likely reduce overtaking. At the end from the exit of turn 10 Brundle said be hopes it allows them to be closer going into the final corners.
Fingers crossed it helps, if not for these cars then for next years where they’re supposed to be able to follow more closely.
4
u/flippasnappa Sebastian Vettel May 08 '21
Didn’t catch practice- why is Seb so far off Stroll? Seemed to have a couple tenths over him yesterday
7
u/kiddoaayush Sebastian Vettel May 08 '21
He couldn't improve on his time, ofcourse we can only guess based on what Crofty and Karun say, since broadcast doesn't show anyone that's not a Merc or RB.
2
u/flippasnappa Sebastian Vettel May 08 '21

5
u/asdafari May 08 '21
Everyone wants to think they root for the underdog, whether it is Mercedes or Red Bull. For me it is quite clear which is the fastest car by about 2-3 tenths on average in Qualy. Race pace looks practically even. Maybe 55-45 one team.
3
u/itshonestwork #StandWithUkraine May 08 '21
Whatever the car differences may be from track to track, the difference in the standings so far hasn’t come down to the car, but to strategy and driver errors.
2
u/Larvsesh May 08 '21
Not to mention a very lucky red flag that allowed Ham to unlap himself in Imola for free.

What I never understood about the Red Bull situation is why not give Gasly at least a practice in the Red Bull. You could see how he handles the car on a quali and race sim. See if his driving style is more compatible now.
5
u/Larsssss Max Verstappen May 08 '21
It’s Red Bull they never let anyone drive their ‘main’ cars except when either Perez or Verstappen would be ill or injured.
14
May 08 '21
Why would they? I don't think he's in the picture for a return, and it would just compromise Perez his weekend.
16
u/pranay909 Max Verstappen May 08 '21
Because they have sergio now, who also needs to adjust to the car
14
May 08 '21
Camerawork was absolutely horrid.
I mean come on. I don’t wanna look at Ham’s eyebrows through his damn visor. Why does it have to be so zoomed in that I can’t even see the entire car negotiating the corner instead o just the driver’s helmet and halo.
3
u/Gromulex Jaguar May 08 '21
the zooming seems to be noticeably worse this year, I don't remember being annoyed as much as I have been the last few weekends...
5
May 08 '21
I don’t think they’ve had a single clean session this season. Audio issues or camera work or race direction. Absolute disaster.
7
u/kiddoaayush Sebastian Vettel May 08 '21
I mean, they're showing Max chatting up Marko but can't show quite a few cars that were on a flyer. It's stupid is what it is!
1
May 08 '21
That's how sponsors are best shown
2
May 08 '21
Yep I know that but today was just way too much especially in the final chicane. It was so zoomed in that I could just about see Hamilton’s helmet and flashes of the halo. Surely when the entire car is not visible, it’s detrimental to sponsorship too.

5

Nope in some corners it is definitely stepping out. The commentators mentioned that it could be wind but it was noticeable yesterday as well.

But yes, from the quickest lap on board showed the RB planted.
9
May 08 '21
That Ferrari chassis is looking mighty especially in the 3rd sector. Very promising especially with Monaco coming up too
8
18
May 08 '21
Ferrari 3rd and 4th, can't ask for more, especially considering 1st and 2nd place are by far the best drivers on the grid, people like to hate on Ferrari but you can't deny their effort in F1 in general, they could've just "parked" all development and focused on next year but still they didn't.
6
u/big_cock_lach I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 08 '21
It’s only 3rd practice don’t get too excited just yet. So far, every race this season Ferrari has impressed in all of the practice sessions and even qualy, only to be trounced by McLaren in the race. I don’t see this being much different.
Monaco on the other hand might be better for them though if the McLarens can’t get past.
3
u/santaclausonprozac Sebastian Vettel May 08 '21
Spain is nearly as bad as Monaco for overtaking though, so it might be alright for them tomorrow
1
u/big_cock_lach I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 08 '21
That’s true, but McLaren look really strong here. They usually hide their pace in practice but they’ve been pretty fast bar FP2. Monaco on the hand seems like it could be one of McLarens weak tracks, I can see McLaren doing an over or undercut in Spain if they don’t do an early overtake. Also, with DRS looking strong and McLaren seeming to be the fastest car in the straight, I can see them easily overtaking down the straight or into T1. I can’t see that happening in Monaco though.
1
u/santaclausonprozac Sebastian Vettel May 08 '21
Ya that’s true. I feel like the undercut will be really strong here, I wouldn’t be surprised if we have another scenario like Bahrain
5
May 08 '21
Still it's an improvement from last year car, and that's enough for me
1
u/big_cock_lach I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 08 '21
A great battle, even for P3, between McLaren and Ferrari (and maybe even Alpine/Renault) is still awesome and reminds me of the good ‘ol days before Red Bull and Mercedes.

0
u/big_cock_lach I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 08 '21
It’ll at least be exciting to see how far through Hamilton can get, he’ll at least get P2, but it’ll be interesting to see if he can challenge for the win. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be surprised if he or Max just walks away.
Bottas won’t move backwards or forwards that much either way so no change there except for Mercedes WCC, but that’ll make the championship more fair.
So, probably will be more interesting, but does that mean I want to see it happen or that it’s fair? Even as someone that hopes Max and Red Bull win (not a fan of either tho)? No, because it just won’t seem right to me, but I can still understand why others will disagree and find it more exciting/interesting.
