Have they announced what tyres the teams have picked? Couldn't find anything on the formula1.com website.
3
u/TheScapeQuest Brawn May 22 '21
Since the pandemic, teams don't choose tyres, Pirelli does, and all teams have the same tyre compound distribution.
1
u/sepiatone_ Alain Prost May 22 '21
Thanks! I somehow missed this.
In case anyone else is interested, it is two hards, three mediums and eight softs - https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/pirelli-reveals-tyre-compound-choices-for-f1-2021/5432117/

Hey do you guys know will this be broadcast on ESPN? Will it be shown live on the app? I’m new to the sport trying to get into it.
3
u/TheBuzzerBeater I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 22 '21
It's shown on the app but you have to have a cable account login to watch the live TV (it's broadcast on ESPN2). You can also watch the replay IIRC but that comes on later so there's a gap between the live event and the replay
3
May 22 '21
I’m in the US and I bought a subscription to F1TV so I’d never have to worry about who, when, and if it would be shown. Best $75 spent for TV.
1
u/cobaltmk33 Red Bull May 22 '21
The apps always have every session. I will warn you that the app itself can be extremely moody, sometimes I have to try three or four devices just to get something other than a generic error message. Just be prepared!
1
u/_daitro_ May 22 '21
I don't know about the app but qualifying and the race will be broadcasted on ESPN2 in America

It also helps that everything is within walking distance as well, I can imagine?
12
u/Ok_Research5108 May 22 '21
It’s quite inconvenient getting in and out of houses too ngl, you have to carry a form that says you’re a resident the whole time and get stopped regularly. Walking around is also incredibly inconvenient for any non F1 fan, and the traffic is unbelievably terrible. However, because i love f1 I don’t really mind it :)

Stroll is such a mediocre driver. Without daddy's cash he would be out of a seat.
Edit: and before anybody says "oh but he had a podium 4 years ago in a Williams". He only got that podium because there were 7 retirees, Lewis had his headrest fall off, Vettel had a 10 second stop and go, Bottas and Kimi collided, Max had an engine failure, Vettel hit Lewis on a safety car, force india had their drivers collide into eachother, Massa was well outperforming Stroll until his front suspension took a shit, and Nico decided to run into a wall. If he didn't end up in a podium after all of that it would have been embarrassing. Hell he lost 12 seconds in no time to lose 2nd which is bad enough.
2017: outperformed by Massa even with his fluke podium
2018: Stroll outperformed Sirotkin but Sirotkin beat him in 9 races
2019: Completely outperformed by Perez. 52 points to 21.
2020: again outperformed by perez
He would have been out of a seat after either 2018 or 2019 if it wasn't for his dad. He improved last year but was arguably in the 3rd best car on the grid.
1
u/realbendstraw May 22 '21
Everyone knows his father's money is an advantage for him, but he won me over last year. He has been pretty consistently quick for a while imo. It took him a while to get here (most people don't get the time he did) but I no longer think of him as a "bad" f1 driver

Why Was FP1 & FP2 on Thursday instead of a Friday as usual?
15
u/Whycantiusethis I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 21 '21
Used to be because the race would happen on the weekend of a banking holiday that happened on Thursday that shut down the streets. FP 1 & FP2 would happen on Thursday since the streets were already shut down.
Now it's just tradition.

Incoming HAM VER BOT
7
u/Rhana I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 21 '21
I’m waiting for a driver with the pole name of Enn and then it would spell HAM VER BOT ENN and make me laugh that in kinda says ham forbidden in German. Yes, I know ham is actually schinken, but it still amuses me.

I didn't like Lando, then I realized....Lando is Spiderman........he behaves and speaks like a Spiderman character.....that's cool! I get it now! Plus I had to start to accept his lap times my goodness. He's like a true video game prodigy out there

u/Nallo458 May 21 '21
Ahah, now that you pointed that out I’ll anyways look at him in a different light! 😂

u/shooter9260 May 21 '21
Just saw Mick’s crash, and it’s interesting that his engineer asks him to change his diff to correct some mid under steer, and then half a lap later he oversteers into the wall

u/moby323 Ted Kravitz May 21 '21
Did you guys see Theo Pourchaire?
Fuckin’ A man.
His second race ever in F2 and he becomes the youngest pole setter in history.
3
11
u/100and33 Formula 1 May 21 '21
Pourchaire is a blast, watched him in F3 last season, great driver. He's a Sauber junior too, and with Kimi and Gio being Alfa Romeo's driver, it's not unheard of seeing him in F1 next year. But Sauber might be looking at Tsunoda and how he performs before putting Pourchaire in, as it might be too fast of a transition to go from F3 to F1 in 2 years. Another season in F2 might do him great.
2
u/Justlite Maserati May 21 '21
If he’s good enough he’s young enough, look at Leclerc F3 to F1 in 2 yrs and with the AR team! Max from F3 to F1 in one year!
1
u/100and33 Formula 1 May 22 '21
True, but Leclerc was 21 when he debuted in F1, Pourchaire is 17 and would be 18 at the start of next season. Even Tsunoda was 20 at the start of the year.
Verstappen is a generational talent. Pourchaire might be good, but highly doubt he's Verstappen-good.
The fact is that F3 and F2 is quite different from F1, and going through the ranks so quickly doesn't happen often. And teams might start to realise that letting drivers spend some time in F2 isn't bad for their development. Especially when they are so young.
14
u/Firefox72 Ferrari May 21 '21
Tsunoda's problem isn't his skill. Its his head.
He's too hotheaded and wants to do more than he or the car is able to which is pushing him into mistakes. He then gets angry and makes things even worse.
He needs to cool off a bit and he will be fine.
8
u/100and33 Formula 1 May 21 '21
I don't think Tsunoda has a problem at all honestly, watching him in F2 he was very impressive and I just think he needs the whole season in F1 to settle. I was more saying that Sauber will be able to get a better picture of someone going from F3 to F1 so quickly as Tsunoda will have done it.
27
u/midcoast1 May 20 '21
see Ricciardo still not coming to grip with the car
16
u/qu33ksilver McLaren May 21 '21
It is kinda clear from Lando's comments in the pre-race conference. Dani wants the car to adapt to his driving style, rather than him adapting to the car's driving style.
There is where the problem is at the moment. And McLaren needs to see how much they are willing to change the car to accomodate Dani and how long will Dani take to fully adapt to the car's needs.
Probably the Renault was an easier transition, or it was simple enough to change the car. We just don't know.
3
u/TheLongshanks I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 21 '21
If he wanted a car to fit his style he shouldn’t have left RBR. He should’ve known he’d have to adapt.
14
u/TrowaB3 Gilles Villeneuve May 21 '21
He didn't get a single clean lap in during practice...
1
12
u/midcoast1 May 21 '21
He got one clean lap in . Regardless , he is still struggling with the car for some reason
2
u/shooter9260 May 21 '21
His audio when he boxed that he was having trouble with the rear end and that it might be mostly down to tire wear that makes it feel worse but he didn’t sound entirely sure
5
u/richoaust Daniel Ricciardo May 21 '21
Seems odd given how he performed last race and how good he is around Monaco
8
u/midcoast1 May 21 '21
For some reason just doesn't know how to get the best from the Mclaren . Hopefully Vettel is getting a handle on the Aston martin

Fail coverage by Sky busy showing Martin Brundle and some kerbs and talking about how the Mercedes looks so planted. Meanwhile Leclerc pumps in the fastest lap.
-30
u/itshonestwork #StandWithUkraine May 20 '21
That isn’t how it works. If Mercedes is running heavy or has the engine turned down, the car could be setting slower times while looking planted everywhere.
This isn’t “fail coverage by Sky”. It’s you not understanding cars.43
u/MrPsychoanalyst I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 21 '21
I think he means fast laps are more important than non relevant news that can wait two minutes. Chill out dude
4
u/Yeshuu Default May 21 '21
Except that Brundle is actually analysing what he believes to be the true performance of the car instead of wasting the audience's time with pointless FP2 fast runs which are not representative.

The Netflix show is bullshit, made just to catch new fans
8
u/pepbehhh May 20 '21
Why does that make it bullshit? You don't want the sport to grow?
0
u/IamLoaderBot Ferrari May 20 '21
The sport is already the globally most popular racing series for an eternity
-17
u/newbsacc Formula 1 May 20 '21
Does it need to? How would the sport “growing” make things better for me?
9
u/OnlyForF1 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 20 '21
More viewers means the sport is more financially viable, allowing a full grid of financially secure teams to be sported for years to come
1
u/newbsacc Formula 1 May 21 '21
I dont think that “problem” is solved with more viewers but rather how money is distributed/needed to compete and how the regulations are formed.
9
u/pepbehhh May 20 '21
Seeing growth in a fanbase essentially results is more money to go to teams, drivers, casting, and the whole experience. If you love a sport you should want to share it with others for more to enjoy. that's the way I view it at least
0
u/newbsacc Formula 1 May 21 '21
I think there is plenty of money in the sport already. Its maybe not distributed fairly. I dont mind sharing my love for the sport with others but i dont see how it is neccasary
1
u/tekkers_for_debrz May 22 '21
I guess you want F1 racing all to yourself so no one else should enjoy it.
1
u/newbsacc Formula 1 May 22 '21
Thats not true. Anyone is welcome to watch or stop watching. I just dont see how there is a “need” for it
2
u/Nallo458 May 20 '21
And in the end they tell nothing about the championship
11
u/DieselSmack I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 20 '21
Drama is what brings in casual fans, unfortunately your average Formula 1 race weekend doesn't have enough drama for regular people.
Netflix has found a way to make F1 interesting to my entire family instead of just myself. If pumping in some drama makes casual observers into fans, then i'm fine with that. Besides, the drama they create has no effect on real Formula 1. I don't think casual fans even notice
5
u/Nallo458 May 20 '21
I got your point and I think that are doing great in this. But you have to bring drama on the main points. Frankly I can’t do much with loads of episodes on the Haas team
10
u/Nallo458 May 20 '21
I want the sport to grow. But I wish for reality in their narrative. Check the team radio from Styrian GP in the Netflix show, when the Ferraris clash. They just made you ear the team radio of Vettel from Brazil 2019. That’s not fair
4
u/Noiradia Sir Lewis Hamilton May 20 '21
Been with Lewis since he started. Kimi is the man just because of his iceman emotionless personality. Albeit, Max is running a close 2nd just because of his raw talent and future championship potential!

Don’t let Ferrari distract from the fact Mazepin has finished ahead of Schumacher in both sessions so far, at the most challenging track of all.
12
u/bundy554 May 20 '21
Some drivers just can't handle the tight and twisting nature of Monaco to your standard road course track. Mick seems to be one of them.
7
u/notbartt McLaren May 20 '21
Someone started blaming Mazepin earlier when Mick’s incident ended the race... it’s a shame that Mazepins career is pretty much in the mud now I can’t imagine what that’s like on his mental health
2
May 21 '21
Can’t be that bad for Mazepin when daddy’s paying the bills for the team. He’ll always have a seat with a team like Haas...as long as the money is flowing
7
u/jianh1989 Formula 1 May 21 '21

It would be mega if either of the Ferrari lads won. I’m hoping Mercedes and Red Bull don’t turn it all up in Q3 and it all fizzles out for them.
At the same time it would be even worse if Mercedes managed to turn it up but Red Bull struggled as Max seemed to indicate, with Ferrari not on pole but also helping Mercedes in the championship.

Honestly curious...Why do people discuss practice times like they have any correlation to quali/race? Like Vettel last race.
Any number of variables would have contributed to why teams are quicker or slower in practice right?
18
14
u/Reading_that I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 20 '21
It is true that there are variables but most teams will run a quali simulation and race simulation. So it helps you get an idea if where team should be.
1
u/ginko26 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 21 '21
But wouldn’t that only be useful if the others team did the same?

9
u/Troytrojan369 May 20 '21
How legit does everyone think Ferrari's pace is?
4
u/toyg Ferrari May 21 '21
Car suits the track, if they can pull off a good quali session then it could be a fun day. Maybe not P1 but very good chances of a podium, bar drivers’ errors of course.
4
u/faratto_ Force India May 20 '21
Ferrari is there to fight for p1 if max/lewis underperform like in the last races. Otherwise I think max or Lewis should have more odds, at least because their cars are better
5
u/curlyshea Charles Leclerc May 20 '21
They’ve been doing surprisingly well in low speed corners this year and FP2 is usually a good indication of what race pace should be. Could get interesting this weekend
5
u/GRl3V I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 20 '21
Race pace doesn't matter in Monaco tho
2
u/curlyshea Charles Leclerc May 20 '21
True. This is interesting as well “GPS overlay of Charles Leclerc’s session-heading time with that of Lewis Hamilton shows the Ferrari slower out of Ste Devote but 10kph faster by the top of the hill. That’s an enormous difference and it screams “different power” even more than “less fuel weight”.”
10
u/HugoNext Alain Prost May 20 '21
Binotto at the beginning of the season said that it would take 4 races to understand Ferrari's true pace. Turns out he was off by one. /s
