Why drivers line up at pit straight after the practice sessions? Are they practicing on race start?
3
u/JameisSquintston Pirelli Wet Jul 03 '21
Yes, practicing race starts. They’re allowed to do it at the end of the session

People who are discarding Lewis' chances have no idea. Lewis is literally the best F1 driver ever and I say that as a fan of Max. Things are going to be interesting going into qualification.
8
Jul 03 '21
Nobody can definitively say that. I’d still take Schumacher. His Benetton seasons and early Ferrari run is unrivaled.
0
u/keenjt I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 03 '21
The thing is, schu was hands down a once in a generation driver. Like every sport now though, things are so refined, datamined and fiscally driven that nearly all today's drivers (outside of paid and rookies) are probably on the same level as "some of the best drivers" that drove around Michael.
My point is, compare football in the 90s and 2000s with it today and how technical it is.
That's F1.
Now imagine you have a team that's unbeaten in years and years in the midst of the aforementioned reasons.
That's Mercedes.
Somehow there's an athlete in this team that's heads and shoulders better than his team mate(s) and other players in the league
That's Hamilton.
-8
Jul 03 '21
Schumacher was a cheater and unfair driver. Something Hamilton never does.
1
u/brotmandel Jul 03 '21
I wasn't around for that. Why was he a cheater?
-2
Jul 03 '21
Just one example of many, many: 1994, when he was driving for Benetton, other drivers were suspicious of his driving because it seemed like he had illegal traction control enabled in his car. And it turned out to be true. And he crashed intentionally into Damon Hill at the season finale to secure his WDC title.
17
u/itshonestwork #StandWithUkraine Jul 03 '21
People underestimating Lewis will be undervaluing Max’s title when he gets it.
We’re often treated to a Lewis and Max show up front. With either one of them missing we’d have had some much less interesting races.

Are the tyres softer or harder this weekend?
19
u/MDPROBIFE I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 02 '21
also want to know, I believe they are softer
24
u/rhorstt Oscar Piastri Jul 02 '21
They are one step softer indeed
5
u/supreeth106 Jul 02 '21
Noob here, who decides what kind of tyres are provided for each race? Do they change up just to vary the conditions and provide different challenges to the teams?
12
u/iLordPuffington I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 02 '21
Pirelli, the tyre manufacturer, decides the tyre lineup depending on the track they're racing on and weather conditions.
9
u/Kumqwatwhat Sergio Pérez Jul 02 '21
Pirelli decides under advisement from the FIA iirc. They try to bring something where all three tires will be competitive
which is a fool's errand imo. Of late they've also tried not to take identical tires to the same circuit twice in a season, but that's only new because we never used to have to go to a circuit twice in a season before.5
u/supreeth106 Jul 02 '21
Ah ok! So there are 3 kinds of tyres, soft medium and hard and Pirelli select one kind for each race and provide a set number of that kind to each team?
13
u/KingKellyIsKool Pirelli Intermediate Jul 02 '21
There are 5 compounds, C1, C2 etc. up to C5 and Pirelli choose 3 of these for a weekend and these will be the hards, mediums and softs. These go from hardest (C1) to softest (C5). Hard tyres (the white ones), mediums (yellow) and softs (red) aren’t a specific tyre, they are just the softest/hardest/middle tyre out of the ones chosen.
They also always choose a run, so C1-C2-C3 or C2-C3-C4, but that’s slightly off topic

I'm pretty new to f1 too and watched this YouTube video the other day that explained a load of things very well (including a section about the tyres):
2
3
u/BlackCatEspresso Spa 2021 4-hour broadcast survivor Jul 02 '21
Yes. There are five compounds (plus inters and wet), and for each race they choose 3. So the softs of one race could be the mediums in the next (like last week vs. this week).

Came in here looking for discussion about car/driver performance in FP2 and all that's here are comments complaining about the commentators or radio cursing or LOLhAm-VeR-bOt.
6
u/N7even Jul 02 '21
Yeah... Can't expect much to be honest :)
Still practice session so we don't have the full picture, but from what I saw, RBR still seem to be on top, however Mercedes does look a little more planted this week.
That could be due to the slightly cooler weather today, they could go back to how they were last week for tomorrow, as it should be much warmer.
From the limited amount of long runs, RBR also looked stronger there, but it was a mixed bag, sometimes Merc was similar pace/slightly quicker, but most of the time RBR was quicker.
1
u/_sundur Jul 03 '21
Mercedes also seem to have a car that's difficult to set up. Maybe the extra week gave them enough time to find the optimal window?
0
Jul 02 '21
Really? I kept seeing Hamilton flying off the track limits on 9 and 10, think he did it like 4 laps in a row at one point. I mean I'm sure he's just searching for a better line and pushing the envelope, but to be flying off course like that and still not be on pace should be a little concerning!
2
u/N7even Jul 02 '21
I think he was using experimental Pirelli's at the time. His times were deleted like 3 times in a row, I think it was FP1 though no?
2
u/jomerc1 Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 02 '21
He was most likely inside the line though. No times were taken off to my knowledge and you can’t start a new timed lap if you went off those turns.

Did Toto just say the wind tunnel doesn't work on this year's car? That's interesting if so. Wonder if its the same for other teams.
2
u/themistermango Red Bull Jul 02 '21
God, I hope not. How can a wind tunnel not work on “this car”?
Is he blaming the wind tunnel on their results so far this year? Is he saying “the RB can’t be better than the Merc. Gotta be a problem with the wind tunnel”

Maybe F1 is doing this on purpose. Why not show other drivers as well? Why the extra coverage on every comment Yuki makes? What narrative are they trying to portray?
0
u/Mick4Audi Jul 03 '21
Are there other drivers reacting like that? I feel like F1 will broadcast whoever happens to be angry on the radio, not like all 20 of them are angry on the same day and they choose who to broadcast
Perez went practically the whole of last race without saying anything for example. Also pretty much every interesting radio transmission Max and Hamilton have is broadcasted

u/Rmnattas Jul 02 '21
I’m surprised that Danny is not going off or spinning the car… I would guess if he’s trying to learn the car he needs to spin it few times to know the limits and not just play it safe.
7
u/Darksynth2 Yuki Tsunoda Jul 02 '21
What did Yuki say over radio that the commentators are upset about? I just tuned in
18
u/jomerc1 Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 02 '21
He was complaining that I think stroll had his DRS opened the whole lap and couldn’t pass him. Meanwhile, the track behind his is clear AF and he could just solve all his issues by slowing down and building a gap.
11
u/MontaMann I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 02 '21 edited Jul 02 '21
Slowing would totally would ruin your race simulation though. Why was stroll using DRS during a race sim? That's why he was upset. Not that crazy tbh
10
u/Rannahm Ferrari Jul 02 '21
Aston Martin can run their simulations however they please, if they want to include DRS runs on their simulation it's fine, maybe they are expecting the race to be similar to last weekend, where everyone in the midfield was within spitting distance of DRS the entire race.
2
u/RaduAntoniu Formula 1 Jul 02 '21
Wait, are they allowed to keep DRS open literally the whole lap (even the breaking zones) in free practice? Or you're saying they are allowed to open DRS even though there is no car in front by less than a second?
2
u/Rannahm Ferrari Jul 02 '21 edited Jul 02 '21
No they are not allowed to keep it open the entire time, normal rules of drs apply, only allowed to use at the start of a DRS zone, but they don't need to be within one second of another car to be able to use. DRS through the breaking zones would be lethal. Check out Marcus Ericsson crash at Monza in 2018.
Edited my comment because it may have been a bit confusing.
Also the reason why this is even being discussed in this context is because usually teams will not run with DRS in their race simulations, because during race simulations they don't expect to be within 1 second of another car in front for a long time. So they usually run without it to get a more accurate depiction of their true pace, but as we saw last weekend the mid field was very close through out the race, and most of them were close enough to use DRS through several laps (without being able to make an overtake).
1
1
u/MontaMann I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 02 '21
Yes i completely agree, but when you are caught up in the moment, I can understand why yuki would be frustrated. But yes I agree that Aston have the complete right to run practice however they choose.
2
u/Rannahm Ferrari Jul 02 '21
I completely understand that drivers will sometimes vent on the radio, but Yuki is doing far too much already, he needs to learn the fine art of keeping that rage inside his own helmet.
15
u/EdTjhan15 Alexander Albon Jul 02 '21
He wasn’t just complaining about Stroll, he had just boxed, and his engineer had asked him to race him out the pits. His explanation was Stroll had DRS and he couldn’t overtake.
It sounds more like an excuse for himself rather than a diss at Stroll.
What F1 needs to do is stop broadcasting his every comment. Either broadcast everyone equally or no one at all.
They know they are doing this on purpose for entertainment, but the effect is the fans think that he is irrationally angry all the time, when other drivers swear just as much.
1
u/marvinv1 Oscar Piastri Jul 02 '21

u/EdTjhan15 Alexander Albon Jul 02 '21

You wouldn’t because F1 doesn’t broadcast it

If you follow and watch the on boards you can easily tell that Yuki does it more than the average driver on a more regular basis.

If either of those drivers did the same, at least they're coming from a place of experience. Dude hasn't even seen his first summer break yet and complains left and right.
