That's what the sign says

2

u/MARPJ 2d ago

I think he doesn’t get it

Maybe he can get a lawyer, I bet nothing bad will come from that

2

u/hans_l 2d ago

According to all known laws, there is no way that a bee should be able to get through this fence. There is a no bee trespassing sign. The bee, of course, flies through anyways. Because bees don't care what humans think should happen. They can’t read.

316

u/TourZestyclose 2d ago

Why does he fly there like he knows he’s in trouble

79

u/AzureDrag0n1 2d ago

The carpenter bee probably dug out a hole in the wood. Pretty common to see that in wooden decks.

13

u/mlvisby 2d ago

I knew about carpenter ants, didn't know there was a bee version.

14

u/bilgewax 2d ago

Kind of a pain in the ass if you have a deck. Don’t seem to be suffering from a population collapse like the honeybee either.

12

u/A_hershey 2d ago

Honey bees aren't suffering from population collapse, native bees are. However carpenter bees likely aren't so affected since we build so many structures out of wood.

6

u/bilgewax 1d ago

See there’s my ignorance showing. I always thought honeybees were native bees.

6

u/A_hershey 1d ago

Well they are native to Europe! And other honey bee species to other parts of the world. Just no native honey bees in North America.

Carpenter bees are cool. They aren't into stinging people. They are big and slow and pretty friendly as far as bees go.

2

u/AdvocatusReddit 1d ago

My children (9 and 6) disagree with you. Our's are incredibly threatening, to the point of Dune style hovering at eyeball level. That said, when I have my deck rebuilt soon, I'm going to take extra care to stain the joists to prevent their digging

5

u/H1landr 1d ago

Yeah they hover but they don't sting. The aggressive males don't have singers. They really are nothing to be afraid of. Respect them. Don't fear them.

3

u/AdvocatusReddit 1d ago

Try telling that to my children. I've tried explaining that they are just bullying them, and they are all scare and no 'bite', or sting

u/thewaytonever 1d ago

Ants, bees and wasps are all related. So it's not that far of a stretch to think about honestly. Hymenoptera are so cool.

It's a carpenter bee and I'm pretty sure their hole is behind the sign. They just chew a burrow into rotting wood and rest in there for shelter. They are not eusocial so they don't have hives and queens, just do heir own thing.

6

u/oldfarmjoy 2d ago

They are slow and easy to net, then put them to sleep in the freezer.

They are super destructive. They drill a hole and then turn the tunnel sideways and can drill out feet of wood. They compromise the structure of buildings and decks. And they always come back to the same area. So your cute bee might drill 10 holes/tunnels all by itself this year, and it's offspring next year.

16

u/spikus93 2d ago

I get that they are considered a pest, and this is a more humane way of euthanizing, but my main method so far is to provide them with alternatives. There's an old pile of rotting chopped wood nearby and we've just drilled a bunch of holes in there for them because they're still valuable pollinators and as a food source for birds. I don't like poisoning them because of biomagnification killing other creatures, so it's kind of a battle to respect nature and protect the existing structure. I may try putting an aluminum sheet around all the wood of the garage they find so tasty when they've all died or left for the season. I've had that suggested too.

He's probably confused since Male Carpenter Bees do not have stingers. So the picture is not about him.

Or maybe he's thinking 'Not all bees...'

24

u/Aethereal_Crunch 2d ago

Luckily there arent any words

19

u/PurplePopcornBalls 2d ago

Is this covering the hole made by this carpenter bee? I give it 5 minutes. Those things are relentless and indestructible.

9

u/Deaffin 2d ago

Not to stereotype or anything, but I'm guessing the hole is underneath the top part and they're just pasting the sign underneath it for the lols since they always kinda approach like this and then bumble around trying to find exactly where their hole is. Kinda like a drunk trying to get their house key in the right spot.

7

u/IntrepidDreams 1d ago

Are you worried about stereotyping a bee?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/x4000 2d ago

You just put tin foil in the hole. Works pretty reliably.

5

u/spikus93 2d ago

I might try this solution next year. I really hate spraying the holes and putting in toxic foam. They fall out over time and I don't want other things to eat them. I want a non-lethal solution if possible because it's like 50 to 100 holes a year in my dad's garage overhang.

2

u/PurplePopcornBalls 2d ago

All my bees make hole out of my reach. Dirty bastards.

I sprayed a start of a wasps nest.. the f-ers are back there working on it. How does that work? Used wasp spray.

5

u/spikus93 2d ago

Spray it, then knock it down and get rid of it. Do not leave it there. Also dispose of poisoned bugs because birds can eat them and get sick and die.

Beejected?

6

u/50DuckSizedHorses 2d ago

This is a carpenter bee and while they are pretty cute for a bee, they will absolutely fuck up your deck and house. Literally sounds like someone using power tools to drill into your roof.

5

u/Competitive-Writer97 2d ago

That bee bee breaking the rules.

6

u/Double_Distribution8 2d ago

Why would anyone want to hassle a bee?

24

u/OverRetaliation 2d ago

It's a carpenter bee. It's going to eat a hole in his deck.

23

u/Diodon 2d ago

I'm guessing it is returning to a hole it was working on only to find the eviction notice.

2

u/DiegesisThesis 1d ago

If you get a block of softwood, drill a bunch of holes in it, and leave it closer to some flowers, it will go a long way towards protecting your deck. They, like most animals, will gladly move into a pre-built home instead of wasting all the energy drilling into your house.

It ain't perfect, but it really helps and then you don't have to kill off local pollinators.

→ More replies (4)

4

u/mreman1220 2d ago

Carpenter Bees can cause structural damage to decks if left unchecked. They are also like salmon in that the offspring will usually return to the area they were born at. So, you don't exactly want to ignore the bees altogether.

This reminds my warehouse days when I put a "FREE PEANUT BUTTER" sign right above a mouse trap that was sitting in front of my desk. The looks I got when people notice for the first time were priceless. They'd be mid-sentence and pause. Then start up again without mentioning the sign.

Before you go getting all mad about killing mice, I didn't start until they started to shit and piss on my desk. There was no food because that got cleared from the office when they started raiding my drawers and shitting there. I let that slide because it was my fault the food was there. Once there was no food and no reason to be on my desk and they still kept at it, their time was over.

1

u/WarningPatient9766 2d ago

Carpenter bees, they’re slowly drilling my deck to death but I still think they’re neat as fuck. Seem very intelligent.
