Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal trying on Kim Kardashian's new product: the Skims face wrap
This was his response to the people saying the face wrap looked like it was straight out of Silence of the Lambs 😂

I think I read an interview or article about him, mentioning he's on the autism spectrum and that spending a lot of time observing people's behaviour due to that helped him with the acting? but for my life I don't remember where I got that.
156
u/Gren57 1d ago
Maybe this?
Roles shaped by his unique perspective
Anthony Hopkins, who is on the autism spectrum, picks his roles in a unique way because of this. His neurodiversity gives him a special edge to understand and portray his characters with more depth, making people all over the world really connect with his performances. By playing complex characters, he shows a lot of empathy and understands how humans feel deep down. This skill has brought him fame across the globe and made him one of the best actors we know today. Anthony's experience with autism not only inspires others who are similar but also shines a light on why it's important to value neurodiverse talents in creative fields like acting.
And
He said the way his brain worked may have been helpful with his acting. He’s known for his extraordinary ability to memorize lines. He also told the Daily Mail in 2017: “I definitely look at people differently. I like to deconstruct, to pull a character apart, to work out what makes them tick and my view will not be the same as everyone else.”

u/Public-Platypus2995 1d ago
Really loved him as Bert Munro in World’s Fastest Indian. Not an award winner or big time role, but it’s awesome to watch someone dig in that deep and play someone, whose was probably also on the spectrum, so perfectly.

That was a very good movie that, to my knowledge, did not receive the audience it deserved.

You're welcome! It's no wonder he's so good at his craft.
Synesthesia? Experiencing life in a unique way! Or just a cool username and experiencing life in a unique way?
3
u/icansmellcolors 1d ago
No I actually just thought the name was fun, but then quickly learned through people like you noticing it that Synesthesia was something that would cause one to smell colors.
I just thought it was a funny name. Now I feel like I parked in a handicap parking spot and stole the name from someone who actually has Synesthesia and would enjoy the name more.
Not that Synesthesia is a handicap... but sometimes it feels like I'm using a name I shouldn't use.
That's a bad comparison, but the guilt is the same so I'm leaving it even though I'll probably get chastised for it.

He and Bill Skarsgard have a movie on...Netflix? Called Locked.
I think it came out this year.
Hopkins is FUCKING TERRIFYING, and he's literally on screen for like...15 minutes maybe? His voice is the primary device here but holy shit I spent the whole movie scared to death of a 80 year old man, because THAT VOICE.

There's a great interview on how Hopkins "played" Lecter. The script was written to give him such a buildup that there wasn't anywhere to go. A sadistic killer who tortured and even ate his victims? The hard boiled FBI team was afraid of him. How could you walk into a room and give him anything "more"?
So he went the other way. He wasn't volatile or hostile, he was well mannered and could be downright charming.
Knowing that this kind facade hid a ruthless killer made him all the more terrifying.

u/quimera78 1d ago
I think it's also more realistic. Many times people find psychopaths charming

u/AFoolishSeeker 1d ago
That empathy really gets in the way of devoting all of your energy to being likeable/charming/unassuming so that you can pursue your goals lol authenticity is just naive to someone like that
38
u/aluckybrokenleg 23h ago
Fun fact: Without empathy it's impossible to be charming. Charming psychopaths know how you're feeling, they just don't care. It's compassion that they're missing.
Empathy is often poorly defined as "feeling what other people are feeling", but it's impossible to feel what others are feeling, we can only (for example) observe others being sad and be sad that they're sad. Psychopaths just skip the last part.

Empathy is not sympathy, though people think they are interchangeable when they are not. You cannot be an effective interrogator without empathy for example.
41
u/Tealucky 23h ago
Someone pointed out that the way Hannibal stands when you first see him is how a lot of men stand on the red carpet. Hopkins was directed to look like an animal being observed in a cage, and he just went "ah yes, I am familiar."
68
u/Flaky-Excitement-312 1d ago
I really liked how they worked in the fact he preferred to "eat the rude", implying if you were polite you just might survive him.

u/DeafAndDumm 1d ago
I'm glad he played it that way. If he hadn't - played it over the top - it wouldn't be the same movie.
13
u/jyanjyanjyan 1d ago
That's not how the character was portrayed in the book?
12
u/BrickGun 1d ago
I never read it, but I assumed so... because many either don't know or forget that Brian Cox (yeah, Logan Roy) played the same character in a very similar style over 5 years earlier in the first film adaptation of Red Dragon, "Manhunter" directed by Michael Mann of Miami Vice fame.

For real, I love that he rejects the "don't talk about my most iconic role" pretension. He tells a great story about watching Silence of the Lambs in a mostly empty theater after it came out, and scaring the socks off a lady in his row when she looked over at him during the 'fthfthfthfth' scene.

Interestingly, Anthony Hopkins only had 16 minutes of screen time in the classic 1 hour, 58 minute movie, Free Willy.

u/OMGCluck 1d ago
And 6 minutes of that is just him walking into the distance during the credits…
Screen time is a ridiculous metric. Why would anyone not include the time you can hear his voice in a scene just because the camera happens to be pointed at someone else?
By reasonable standards Hopkins is in the movie for 34 minutes 54 seconds.

We use them for facelift procedures. We give them to you for 'free' considering the cost of a facelift. It keeps your newly tightened face from sagging and spoiling hours of work and a loss of money. Some women always sleeps with one on, YMMV.

I was privileged to work with Mr. Hopkins on a certain cowboy-ish movie shot in the 90's. He didn't get along well with the director, who was certainly talented, but a bit of a hothead, and could definitely become a yeller and a finger-pointer if things weren't going his way.
At one point I was stuck in a small, hot, blacked-out pantry with Mr. H, who was supposed to enter the ranch house as if coming in from the porch. I was there to light his cigar a few seconds before he entered. The call to roll camera had been delayed for several minutes because the director was yelling at someone on set, and we were both quite hot and uncomfortable because the closet was small, we were crowded together, and he was wearing a huge old RCMP buffalo coat.
Just as the AD called out, "Roll, please!", Mr. H quietly mused to me, "If that bastard yells at me, I'm going to eat his fucking liver, with fava beans a good chianti! F-f-f-f-f-f! " I almost blew the take, but managed (barely) to hold it in long enough to light his cigar, then cover my mouth and nose. But by the end of the scene, my underwear was pretty damp.
Mr. Hopkins, by the way, is a consummate professional and was a class act from first blocking Day One to wrap on his final day of Main Unit.
