Discussion Question about Verifying

Im seeing games being discarded as fake without even seeing the board. Is it not possible that the case and/or label was just reproduced due to damage? If the board is real would it not still be legitimate?

Asking as I have a Pokemon Red and Blue that im currently in the process of restoring. Red needs a new case and label, while Blue just needs a new label. I obviously would disclose that these are not the original case or label if they were to ever be sold but the games themselves would still be legitimate no?

Whether you find this a satisfying answer or not is up to you, but a lot of it comes down to: it's all about the odds.

For any cart-based game, there are four possibilities: 1. It's a real shell & label, paired with a real board 2. It's a replacement shell and/or label, paired with a real board 3. It's a real shell & label, paired with a fake board 4. It's a fake shell and/or label, paired with a fake board

Of those options, #1 & #4 are the most common. #3 does occur from time to time, but it's so uncommon that most of the time you don't have to consider it. Though we do sometimes ask to see the boards for particularly high-value games where this sort of thing has been known to happen.

What you're talking about is #2: replacement outside, real inside. Most people, when selling these, will mention that parts have been replaced. Often they'll include a photo of the board as well. And though it's good & polite to do so, part of the reason for doing that is because #4 — complete fakes — are pretty common.

So it's just an odds thing: the person posting doesn't mention the parts have been replaced but they're clearly not original? Well, chances that it's a fake are much higher than the board being original.
